Post Hurricane Shelling; Eta was here for days so I went shelling three times!

  • Post hurricane shelling always provides some excitement and Hurricane Eta was here for DAYS! I didn't know what to expect since I've only experienced hurricane close calls and luckily this hurricane only swiped us and didn't make a direct hit. It was looking scary there for a minute!
    I went to Fort Myers beach to go shelling before, during (the storm came back!) and after the hurricane and I found some amazing critters, a beach littered with angel wings and murex and just had myself a good ol' time being at the beach. Hurricane Eta left us with a messy beach, a bunch of flooding but luckily not that much damage.
    I decided to share all 3 days of Hurricane Eta Shelling because I think people were curious what I found on the beach.

    The long video was FANTASTIC! I feel like the more I watch the more I learn, and as a result I feel so much more prepared for my move to Florida! Also I love how this video turned more into a critter saving mission than a shelling trip haha ❤️

      Yeah....one video on it's own was a little boring but string them all together and we have a beach saga! Oh I wish I had a channel to watch when I was planning on making the move! At least now you know what beaches will provide shells should you decide to move to SWFL. I love finding the critters that make the shells we love - well I guess I really just love everything beach :) Thank you so much for coming along with me!

    After storms came in on Galveston beaches I would pick up the "greenery" and gently turn it over. That is when I found a seahorse that was still alive. It was a great find. I took it back to the water and hoped it would survive. I would have collected as many smaller one, to make Angel to put on the Christmas tree. All that white against the green, would be so pretty.

      We only found one seahorse so far down here - it was spectacular to see it alive like that not in an aquarium! I've been rewarded by checking out things that I thought were one thing and turned out to be something completely different. I just love checking out things on the beach I guess. All those angel wings was crazy! I do have a few and a handy husband - maybe I will put a few on my tree!

      I always have to check to make sure there is "nobody home" - the snail could still be alive or some hermit crab could have claimed it first! I'm happy to wait until the shell is empty. Sometimes it drives me crazy but fair is fair. Thanks so much for watching!

    Thank you for sharing your beautiful shells. I have a question, when you collect, what do you use to carry your shells down the beach while you are looking? I know you said before you use a special container for sand dollars. Could you show us your collecting bag/box/whatever?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  3 года назад +4

      I have this mesh bag that I've had for years that seemed like a good idea to use. It had 2 handles and I converted it to an over the shoulder bag. It's not perfect - but it works! And I was using a small food container for the sand dollars and other delicate shells and I had to switch to a bigger one since I've been finding big sand dollars! I'll show a shot of it in one of my upcoming videos for you!

    • @slvihelenevorrenaasand7835
      @slvihelenevorrenaasand7835 3 года назад

      Just the same have I wondered about, as I understood from google; it is building up minerals from the body around the operculum along the edge of the shell 🐚
      Some shells are left handed and some are right handed, it becomes that it grow more on one side than the other! 😂

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  3 года назад +3

      Some, like the lightning whelk, grow a little shell as they wait in their shell casings to hatch as teeny tiny little snails with shells that continue to grow. The original part of the shell will be the very top of its spiral as it gets bigger. They build their shell as they get older, and they spiral around and around. I've recently heard you can tell how old they are by the length of their shell - I'll have to learn more! I'm going to study to become a Florida Master Naturalist, so one of these days I'll be able to share all sorts of snail info!

    I have a large Pelican puppet that has a stick inside so I can swivel its head and I tell the children at our church here in Oregon about the true story of Pelly the naughty pelican that was disobedient to his parents by joining a gang that would steal bait fish off the fishermen there around Ft Meyers beach.. instead of diving into the water and getting a fish… he got very lazy, didn’t get proper exercise and fresh air instead he chose to steal his food and then one day he got a very big bait fish and he was being lazy and didn’t want to listen to the way he was taught and he arrogantly taunted his parents by showing off the biggest bait fish he had ever caught.. he was parading around and seemed to show off his great skills at stealing bait fish without any effort and no having to fly up into the sky to find a fish and then diving down deep into the water.. so he kept parading up and down the shore but then eventually he had to admit that he couldn’t swallow the big bait fish… he kept trying and struggling to swallow the big fish but he couldn’t swallow it.. hed shake his head tipping up and down but he still couldn’t swallow it and then he began to panic and then he started crying and shaking his head again and again but it just didn’t go down as it was stuck… all day long,Pelly the Naughty Pelican was beginning to lose his strength and couldn’t even walk anymore and he was very weak and hungry but still unable to swallow his big baitfish he had stolen earlier in the morning and that baitfish was getting dried out and stinky and Pelly the Naughty Pelican knew he needed help.
    His “friends” flew away as the fishermen were leaving and going home so there was no more baitfish to steal… Pelly kept flapping his wings and he was embarrassed and his friends who had taunted and teased him were all gone leaving him to struggle all alone… but thankfully soon a few men in green uniforms came to see if they could help him… Pelly was easy to catch as he wasn’t very strong bcuz he had been lazy and didn’t build up strong muscles by fishing the way he was taught but instead he chose to take the easy way out by stealing baitfish but he had no idea how those baitfish were held onto the fishing line and Pelly didn’t see the humongous bait hook and now it was stuck deep into his bill-beak and he couldn’t swallow it down as it was hooked and the ONLY WAY TO REMOVE THE hook would be a very scary and terrifying way… The men in green uniforms were the Florida Fish and Game people who were there to protect and help the critters and fish along the beach and water.. the men had a great plan for helping Pelly out of his dilemma and it was getting dark and he was in danger of dying and the Fish and Game people were ready to help Pelly but he had no idea that they were there to help him and not harm him.
    The big tool with the red rubber handle looked very scary to Pelly and when one man was holding him down while the other man began to come near his mouth…Pelly was very scared and was afraid of what the man was going to do with that big tool while the other man had held him down as the crowd grew larger and the people were taking pictures and then they were looking at Pelly… but he was too weak and pretty soon the man with the big tool was twisting and pulling as carefully as he could… and then with a little more twisting and pulling… he was able to pull the big fishhook out of his mouth and the dried out baitfish was no longer a tasty fish and Pelly was so thankful when the hook was pulled out and the other man had let him go…pelly was free of the hook and stolen baitfish… he could barely flap his wings but he found a little bit of energy and he flew away… hungry and feeling embarrassed about his being naughty.. but his mama and daddy forgave him for not behaving like a good pelican who obeyed and did everything he was taught.
    Pelly had learned a lesson and he learned that stealing was not the best way to get a good meal.

    I know it’s almost impossible but… could you please post the text/words of the name of the shells as they come up? Like the one that is the foot of the conch shell… Nopurculum? I found one long ago but was clueless to what it was until years later when I found a larger one…glad I kept it

      Operculum. I do put the names up sometimes, but I just can not put all of them up. I just don't have the time. I actually started making a shell ID video but gave up on that too due to lack of time. Just give me your best guess as to what the shell is and I'll happily type it in the comments for you!

      Each time I come back from a beach walk I separate the shells into ones I want to keep (which are put into glass jars, containers or bowls), shells I will use for my shell mirror, shells I will hold onto to sell for people and the rest goes into a shell bed in my yard :) Well for now anyway. At some point I'll probably run out of room! I made a video if you want to see how I store some of my shells: ruclips.net/video/d7SmDUcvdjU/видео.html

    I think this possibly has the most live critters to date, especially Florida Fighting Conchs. Since they are vegetarians, why have they got the reputation for fighting? Is it because they look aggressive with their trunk whipping around? Anyway, good visit, a blast from the past. Hugs from Virginia!

    • @SWFBeachLife

      No one really knows how the fighting conch got it's name. It's been theorized it's from their thrashing movements or the end of it's shell looks like a warriors shield. Had to say but either way I just love them!

    I’m trying to click on the bell to be notified of new videos. RUclips won’t allow. Some verbiage about content for children. I’ve tried to change it, but can’t seem to figure it out. Is this something you have any knowledge about?

      Hmmmm. Try this. Unsubscribe. Then find my newest video and try it. Waaaay back before I got RUclips savvy I think I might of set some early videos as “made for children” since I wasn’t using foul language or posting content. I since leaned that was prohibiting comments. Let me know if that works.

    I would have taken a bunch because I have never been to a beach where you can find such pretty shells. We winter to Outter Banks once and only found some clam shells. We went to Wildwood N.J. and nothing. Same for Ocean City MD. I am an advocate for sharks. I love those shark eye shells. There is one little beach in Southern MD. I have been to because you can find sharks teeth. Most are tiny but that is a fun beach. It’s on the bay so you only find oyster shells. I hope one day we can get to Florida. I have bad knees but I still would have been out there looking. Looking for shells and sea glass is so exciting! You have lots of treasure at your feet!!!

      I too have been to NJ beaches (nothing) but my sister-in-law went to Assateague and found TONS of whelks after a big winter storm. We went down the week after and didn't find one single shell. I think up North the shelling is so much more difficult. I'm very fortunate to live where I do and don't forget those little scoopers can help with the bending! Thanks for coming along with me!

      Oh it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to keep the hinged angel wings together! The membrane that keeps the shells connected dries out and cracks with the slightest movement. I'm impressed it stayed together as long as it did! I'm more traumatized by the shells I couldn't keep!

      I have found that walking, lots and lots of walking, does increase your chances of finding shells. And this time of year the shells are indeed harder to find, so walking in the water at low tide is going to increase your chances of finding anything. I'm sorry you were a little disappointed in the lack of shells, but I hope you enjoyed your time at the beach anyway. ☺️
