  • What does Fort Myers Beach look like? Well, the beach itself looks pretty great. Yes, there is a little debris, but all things considered the beach is cleaning up quite nicely.

Doesn’t it make you stop & think, that hurricane destroyed concrete, cinder block, brick - all the really hard industrial stuff. Yet the delicate shells, some so fragile, made it okay. Lovely to see the huge range of shells & critters on FM. Stay safe x

Nature has been battling weather much longer than us humans have been and it shows. It was wonderful being back on my beach again but still very sad to see all the destruction. It kind of blows my mind that people are on the beach for their morning walk, I'm looking for shells, and behind me there is unimaginable destruction. I am looking forward to reporting on the rebuilding!

It’s taken me awhile to watch this vid because I think (?) at heart I’m letting them pile up to see progression (which I know will be SLOW). But, as you say, it is just going to take time. And you know what? Good things DO take time to develop and we appreciate them because of that process. So thank you for the vids. No more “piling up” the vids to watch; I’m in need of them whenever you are able to get them posted. Thank you again and again.

Everyone has slowed way down. They are doing their part in getting Florida back up and running again. Then, they are going fishing. What great finds - all those beautiful rose tellins, spiky crown conchs, that huge nutmeg (almost as large as a crown conch), gorgeous intact angel wings. Lovely day shelling.

Been watching your beachy goodness for a while, but this shows HOW IMPORTANT it is to RECYCLE, clean up after ourselves, bc it comes back on the beaches, the fish, gets caught up in the trees and mangroves, choking them out. Thanks for the tour, Beach Angel, it's good to see the beginnings of recovery after Ian left his horrible mark on the shore.
It always makes me sad to see the destruction of the trees and other vegetation. Buildings can be rebuilt, but it takes years for the greenery to recover its tenuous hold on the salty land.
I'm glad you did get to do a bit of shelling. It's sad to see the evidence of the sea creatures' demise. Ian did his work very efficiently.
Still, in time we will recover, as humans are always wont to do, and we will forget. I am glad for that, for the passage of time dimming our memories and the years going past washing away our pain, even as the tide cleanses the shore.
Oh, those sunrise Venus clams are lovely! You are surely being blessed by the god of the sea today with treasures like that dark purple coquina pair. I am growing teary-eyed for longing to be there.
I'm hoping that the shelling will be good this autumn when I can finally go home. It's always hit and miss there, not virtually guaranteed like it is on your beaches.
Was that ambergris? There has been a lot discovered lately, maybe as a result of whales being stressed.
What a pretty crown conch! Those curls are wonderful! I have never found one, I don't believe! I seem to recall one in my old collection, but I would have bought it or traded for it. I used to hang out at Shell World a LOT! I can still remember the distinct, wonderfully organic odor of that place. There was also a little museum my parents and I visited once, in a low, rambling Victorian house. Sadly, I have only the memory of it and no idea where it was. So many of my memories are of south Florida and its beaches. My Dad's business took him all over the State and we explored every corner of South Florida. I am so glad for those years and their memories!
Good on you, dear Angel, for cleaning up some of the carnage left on the beach! I would be right with you, pulling trash and debris from the waves. Oh, what a cute little sea star! I like the way their little feet tickle your palm! Your efforts to clean the shore are certainly being rewarded!
Ah, Beach Time! I can almost feel my blood pressure falling! Thank you for helping me to relax before sleeping.
I am so grateful to you for allowing me and my fellow adventurers who love the sea to accompany you on your travels through the wasteland.
I am SO PROUD OF YOU for removing so much trash from the beaches! Others might not do as much or they might do nothing at all.
I will be busy with my hats until we meet again. My husband says it's a good thing I have multiple crochet hooks in my favorite sizes, so I can let them cool off occasionally. I'm making over a hundred hats a week now, working from waking until quiet time, when I must rest and recharge, often in your company.
Take good care of yourself, darling, and enjoy your wanderings as you keep finding the treasures of the sea! Much love to you, dear Beach Angel, from
    Becca, The Lost Mermaid

I was recently on Marco for a couple days, great shelling, but we flew in/out of RSW and on our last afternoon we drove thru FMB and Sanibel….the videos, pictures and news clip don’t begin to show the actual devastation. I was completely heartbroken. We will definitely book a stay on FMB as soon as it is more habitable, but there were a couple places open and that was encouraging. That mountain of debris across from Lovers Key State Park is at least 4 stories tall and miles long, we were really taken aback by the sight of it, especially considering how much debris is still needing to be cleaned up. We will continue to pray for the entire community, but if you have never been to Fort Myers Beach or Sanibel, you missed what was. I’m looking forward to seeing what these communities look like as newly built.

I'm glad you got to get back out to FMB. Despite all the destruction, the wildlife and the shells persist, and to me, that is inspirational. Nice finds too, that stack of angel wings is impressive! So interesting how that crown conch has such curly spines. Even if it's a "common" shell, you just never know when an oddball pops up and that's what makes the search so much fun! Hats off to you for removing all that trash from the beach too. Take care!

Yes, FMB must have a nice angel wing hang-out as that beach tends to have those wings after storms. No surprise there was so many, with the exception they are normally already picked up. It was nice to be back on "my" beach - I'm sure you know what I mean. I hope all is well by you!

I was enjoying the video when I had to pause it to go see which one of our smoke alarms was chirping. I was standing under one and it never chirped. I thought how funny it would be if it was on the video and I was standing there like an idiot waiting for it to chirp. I rewound the video and tah dah, it was on the clip. I got a good laugh out of it and continued on with your beachy goodness. Thanks for the video and the unintentional laugh ! You might need to check your alarms. Haha Have great day !

Thank you for showing the good, the bad and the ugly as it is all certainly there. So many emotions about it, so sad to think about. But the shells, and the beach time you give us just brought all the beauty back if you close your eyes and just listen. there is no more relaxing sound on earth. Except for crickets and tree frogs at night when they come out in the early spring in Ohio! Jut incredible. Yes a long recovery is in store for SW Florida beaches and area. Thanks so much for sharing all that is happening in SWF, and the gradual rehabilitation after Ian. My passion is Abalone shells, which I have collected for years having spent time professionally fishing from Victoria to the most Southern tip of Tasmania, Australia. ❤I love the variety of shells you get there, and look forward at some stage to visiting SWF, so different from our new home up at Sapphire Beach (sub tropics) in Northern New South Wales, Australia, Turban snail shells, Cowrie, Various Drupes, Murex, Cones, Balers, Wentletrap,Tritons, pear Bonets, Trochus, Urchins…. just to name a few are some we find on our lovely North Sapphire beach at our back gate. I enjoy stripping some back to the mother of pearl and make hanging shell mobiles to give to friends. 🐨🦋🐠🦀 🪲🦑🦎🪸🪷🦪
