How To Emulate A Beat Detective Workflow In Logic Pro X

  • Where drum editing is concerned, flex audio, unfortunately, just isn't up to the task. So how do you quantize live, multitrack drums without it? The method I will teach you in this tutorial is as close to a Beat Detective style workflow as is achievable in Logic Pro X. (Note: Threw this video together rather quickly, apologies for the occasional audio drop outs and frequent cuts - hope they don't distract from the content).

For those who experienced crash or freeze with "slice at transient markers" command; I experienced the same issue too with Yosemite and my solution for that problem was to change Logic Preferences from Audio sub menu.
1 - Increase I/O buffer size to maximum,
2 - Change processing threads to maximum,
3 - Change process buffer size to "large".
With these settings my problem was solved. I was working with 11 channel and approx. 5 minutes of drum recording. I believe it is about the amount of cpu capacity that assigned for audio processing. I hope that would be helpful for other users to.
    Cheers!

Works like a charm! Thanks for the the detailed tutorial and for explaining how to work around the quirks of Logic along the way. Like some others have said, it would be cool to apply different Q strengths instead of 100% on grid. Hopefully that’s doable somehow. Anyways thanks again!

Thanks so much! This might be long winded, but here is how I managed to get all tracks to Slice At Transient Marker and not crash with Logic 10.3.
After I made the transient marker edits to what will be my Q-ref files, I create the drum group and select the phase locked audio and set my Q. Then i turn on flex time. You can see that the transient markers for your Q show up on all tracks (change the Q track and the markers change across all files). OK, this is the point that I would choose Slice At Transient Markers and Logic would crash.
From here, the only thing I can do to have it not crash is to leave Flex Time open, and temporarily disable the group for slicing. When I did this, I noticed those markers from the Q tracks remained on the other tracks. So I then went track by track (i've currently done three at a time with no problem) and selected Slice at Transient Marker and was able to do it successfully. All the slices are in the same spots for all tracks. I've done this on a number of sessions now.
MAKE SURE that after you slice, you enable to group before you do any quantization/moving.
Now if I can only figure out how to get it to not crash on the step of moving the region back after the fades are placed, i'll be golden, haha.

Thanks Phil, this was a really helpful tutorial for those, who want to avoid the unnatural artefacts of the Flex algorhythm. Just one small thing: maybe you should have accentuated the part of the quantizing (9:20) somehow. And describe why 1/16 in that particular case. I know it's obvious, but this is the central part, what the whole story is about. Everything before is the preparation and after is some fine tuning. But all in all a great workaround and a very pleasant voice. Guys, I suggest you watching also Phil's guitar&bass tightening video.

Great video from tuition to production. Looks like your method best represents the Protools Beat Detective algorithm. Slicing batch audio to the dominant transients. Way more involved and time consuming, but ultimately a similar result.

Hi Phil. great tutorial and absolute lifesaver. a question. i watched pro tools video and the is a way in PT to adjust length of the audio files to create transients only for each of the created files. I know in Logic you can drag it and shorten it - but is there a way to make one constant length across all the created transients? cheers

What an amazing video....wow...super clear....Is there a way to follow this method AND NOT quantize 100%? In flex mode you can do 80 % quantize (for example) but I'm not seeing how that would be possible following this method...?? Anyway, most music these days is 100 % quantized so maybe it's not big deal
Great job man! Thanks so much for making this

Is there any way you could do another video like this with a complicated drum track? My drum tracks are much more complex and I feel like this process only gets it 75% there and I’m not to sure the best way to fix the wrong beats

  • @KennyDHass

Hi! After I sliced audio at the transient markers and quantized, I try to create that cushion at the beginning of each slice. Whenever I try this, logic either crashes or thinks for a second and crashes. I have tried many combinations of arming and disarming groups and selecting one piece of audio at a time, and I still get the same result. This is frustrating, and I would love a pointer in the right direction. Thanks!

I'm also having issues where, when I go to slice at the transients, logic will either crash or it will finish, but the slices will not be the same across the grouped tracks. Even with phase locked editing on and only kick/snare used as the q references

+foohey Sorry to hear that. Haven't run into this issue. Right now my main repeatable issue with Logic is that it crashes or hangs every time I quit, but never had a crash occur in these circumstances.

When editing multimiked drums that have spill, should I try to make sure that there are transient markers on the spilled noted? E.g., marking the transients of kick drum hits that come through in a snare mic.

BTW, I wanted to let you know that I have a new mix tutorial package available (over 2.5 hours of video, full Pro Tools session, final mastered mix all included).
Here's a quick overview of what you get along with a comparison of the final mix and the raw tracks: ruclips.net/video/oWlHZvBnGAo/видео.html
If it looks like something you'd be interested in, just go to goo.gl/OYO4zi enter "youtubechannel" at check out and you'll get it for 20% off - around 28 bucks. Even if you're primarily in Logic, you can always import the audio files from the Pro Tools session in Logic and follow along.
Anyhow, thanks again for watching the channel and thanks for your feedback!

Hey Michelle, I was banging my head against the walls of my home studio because of this very issue. I found a work-around that is my best shot so far. The work-around is to break the editing up into sections of about 8 bars if possible, not much more than that. I'm sure that given your comment was a year ago, you've probably figured it out by now, but I'm just overjoyed not to be sitting in despair for an hour and a half.
