If you’re recording live drums in Logic Pro X, editing them is essential. Think of editing as quantizing your drums so they are perfectly on beat. Editing is one of the most important steps in the recording process. But unfortunately it's also one of the most skipped steps by beginners. If you want your drums, and ultimately your song, to sound professional, you need to be editing them. So in this video, I’m going to walk through step-by-step how to edit your drums like a PRO in Logic Pro X.

This is one of the best videos about editing in Logic Pro that I’ve seen - and I’ve seen a lot. So many of your peers are unwatchable due their OTT attempts to be “cool” and friendly. Your personality shines through you due to your knowledge and also brilliant, easy communication style. Thank you.
Man, John- thank you! That means a lot. Honestly, a lot of work goes into not trying to look TOO cool 😎 😂
But really, that's high praise and I really appreciate it.🙌🏼
As a drummer getting into recording and mixing this is so helpful thank you
I’ve been mixing my bands songs, and we’re now using real drums for the first time. This is exactly what I needed. Thank you!
Wow that is a fantastic tip, great work
You single-handedly saved me hours! Great video. Super clear and super easy to follow
This has been the most intuitive video for drums I have seen. Amazing, it’s college without the tuition. Thanks for this video. This has certainly motivated me. This will be my go to when I’m considering drums on all of my projects!!!
Fantastic video. So clearly explained, no weird jumping between topics, and was simultaneously detailed enough but not overwhelming. Right on
Great job explaining this. I hadn't edited drums in Logic pro in so long and this really helped refresh my knowledge.🔥
Thank you!! This was a godsend ✌️
Thanks, learned a bunch!
Very helpful!! thanks! I learned other way of doing it in Logic, similar to this one, but this one is much more simple. Good job!
This is rad. Thank you.
Thank you very much. I didn't know that I could cut and edit audio in Logic Pro. You saved me from a lot of work, thank you very much again 🙏🏻
Great Video!!!
This is basically logic beat detective. I’m so happy this exists
basically beat detective haha this is cool
Thank you so much for this video. I used to edit like this in PT but Im sick and tired of Avid and PT and this type of editing was what i needed to move on from it. Thank you so much! ❤
Great video and instruction! Assuming you flatten and merge when done?
wow very cool thanks
Great tutorial! Hopefully one day the logic team will give us better looking waveforms and grid lines showing through the region/waveform.
Loving the Logic videos you’ve been making lately! Your GarageBand videos were a god-send when I was getting started. Anyone (that has a Mac) that asks me where to begin, I always suggest they start out with GarageBand and watch your videos.
I upgraded to Logic about six months ago and while there’s lots of great content creators that cover Logic, I feel your approach is still much needed in the space!
Something about the way you explain things, staying focused on the meat and potatoes and not bogging us down with all the little nuances, it always keeps me engaged and makes the process much less daunting. I feel like I can just jump in and get stuff done. So cheers and thanks for another great video!
That means a lot, Tucker! I work hard to cut fat while keeping the meat. It's not uncommon for me to film these videos a couple times just to make sure it's succinct while still being conversational. I appreciate your support! 🙌🏼

Great edit technique. I'm using it together with the "Nudge" function in the Toolbar.
I assume at the end of the process you merge the split-up audio regions into one for the sake of memory efficiency and overall convenience, right?
Cheers
im thinking about swithcing from ableton to logic because of this feature. Its not time consuming at all. Time consuming is having to slice and drag every beat by hand like i do and it takes hours! thanks
What is the reason/advantage in doing this chop-it-all-up-first method of quantising versus simply using the built-in quantise feature on a whole region? Thank you!
Now I don’t have to go to pro tools for best detective! Thank u sir
I just got this and hoping to edit the snare only to change the sounds.

This video just gave me what I needed after watching practically everything on RUclips about this topic. Thanks man really thanks! Ive been practicing with it this weekend and it works like a charm even in busiest drum parts. My only question is when it comes to ghost notes.. Do you suggest to lock them on the grid? Will it be recommended to mark them to on the snare track section? Or let them be?
Awesome, Raphiel! I'm glad it was helpful. Great question- depends on the song/performance but I would say I generally don't lock them in. Instead, I make sure they are kept in relation to the main snare hit. Aka, I'll drag back from the snare hit that was perfectly quantized to capture the ghost note(s) before it.
But it really depends on how tight the drummer/performance is. Also- if the ghost notes are really a key part of the rhythm and should be perfectly on a specific beat- that will push me toward quantizing it.
Hope that helps!
Awesome video but i'm having trouble, every time i select the track i want to edit it shows up in the track portion of the edit window but a completely different audio region shows up in the file window, have you ever had problems with this?
Hey, doing this method.. do you feel a degradation of the audio? or phase issues?
Do you have to slice all of it and do this for each section? Or can you just high light the whole thing and press Q?
Also do you need to do all 4 steps for each section? Or could you apply the 4 and equal power crossfade to all sections at the end
You must be playing those at a studio! No way you are doing those at home with a young one! I recently started working with a drummer who plays an e-kit and love it. Gives you the feel of a real drummer, more energy, better fills and dynamics but the convenience and flexibility of midi and samples. You should get one!
Definitely in the studio! No drums at home with the little one just yet.
Every time I click the green Q box on any track to remove it from consideration I get the spinning beach ball of death.
Damn… tell your drummers to get ready for recording. Or get a drum machine.
