    Thank you, Marcus! I have been following you since you created the original Beat Detective style editing video. I downloaded all the macros and was so happy to use them. When Studio One 3.3 came out and had the features for Autofill and Autofades I was jumping up and down. Thanks for helping to push this area of Studio One. It was a huge issue for those of us used to Beat Detective in Protools. I always manage to pick up something small watching you work on these videos. I didn't realize I could select the bar number in the transport area like that. Using the arrow key to jump beat by beat is awesome and will speed up QA on the automated edits. :)

    Thanks for the excellent video. I find this method to be great, except for when a complex fill, that was perfect on the original take, gets mangled in the quantize. Is there any way to choose a region of the grid and unquantize just the part of the fill?

    So, after editing the drums, do all the other instruments/vocals need to be edited to match? I'd love it if you made a video on editing instruments/vocals-Like a livestream of editing a whole song :D That would be super helpful.

    • @marcushuyskensmusic
      @marcushuyskensmusic  4 года назад +2

      When I "KNOW" with 100% certainty - that I'm going to be editing my drums - I would always make sure that I do this BEFORE I record all my other overdubs..
      So for example, I would record a scratch track, to record the drums against, then do all my overdubs AFTER.. In the case where that cannot be done, then - all the other tracks would need to be checked against the newly edited drums - with respect to their relative timing..
      Does this make sense? Cheers, M 🍻

    Thanks for this deep dive into what is a very complex task! What would be your advice for sustaining cymbals creating issues? I've watched this video several times in the past month or so, and I find that I can get close mics to line up on the grid well with minimal issues, but I will sometimes get a metallic sounding flam in the cymbal decay when aligning the close mics to the grid. I find no amount of moving the crossfade boundary rectifies the issue: So in this instance, would I have to forego aligning drums 100% and have them be loose?

    Heya Marcus,
    Thanks again for these.. I've managed to answer the questions I had asked you on the other beat detective vid.
    For this vid however.. Say I want to pocket to a loop that swings a bit, instead of to the grid, is that achievable? quantize to selection rather than grid?
    Thanks.

    • @marcushuyskensmusic
      @marcushuyskensmusic  4 года назад +2

      Hmmmmm - I think that first you'd have to extract that groove from the Audio File - and make sure the grid is reflecting Groove (vs the straight 8th, or 16th notes) Let me look into this further...
      Thanks for your comment - Cheers, M 🍻

    Hey Marcus, I have been a sonar user for more than a decade and I have used studio one pro 2 for mastering only for some 5 years now. Thank you for this video. This demo of the new drum editor got me to upgrade to 4 and make the switch for tracking and mixing. 2 questions.. How do you quickly select multiple tracks to group them? ( Do I have to hold shift and click each one every time?) and how did you scroll to the right with the different options (by bar,by the beat, by the screen width?) I need to learn the these tricks. Quantizing my 1st 2 songs averaged 4 hrs each. I know it will get faster!

    • @marcushuyskensmusic
      @marcushuyskensmusic  5 лет назад +1

      chucksano that’s awesome man! Glad to hear you made the move to Version 4. It’s an awesome update from V3 imho.
      As for your 2 questions:
      1) select the first track - then hold shift and select the last track - then click command+G on a Mac or ctrl+G on a PC.
      2) if you mouse click in the bar/beats counter at the bottom of your screen you can use your up and down arrows on your keyboard to move forwards or backwards. And using the left / right arrows will allow you to cycle through the different fields (ie from bars to beats etc)
      Hope this helps! Cheers, M

    Do you know if any type of time stretching or warping happens when using slicing mode/ bend markers?

    • @marcushuyskensmusic
      @marcushuyskensmusic  3 года назад +2

      James Cassidy Nope - no time compression or expansion happens when using slicing mode. The bend markers are simply used as the transient detection points at which the slices occur. Hence why it’s 100% my preferred method!!

    Is there any way to have studio one put the bend marker at the very beginning of the attack? As it is it seems to be putting the bend markers always a little late on a peak.

    • @marcushuyskensmusic
      @marcushuyskensmusic  4 года назад +1

      If you're using a time compression and expansion "Audio Bend" workflow, then it will have a little bit of "padding" which is meant to preserve the transient detail of the front end of the attack.. But when using the slicing - it will actually CUT at the very beginning of the blue padding.. So essentially - its 2 different behaviours based on which method you're using..
      That being said, I use a slicing mode 99.9% of the time when working with Drums and percussive material..
      Hope this helps, Cheers, M 🍻

    Hey marcus, how can i highlight tracks like you did and have them highlighted tracks be selected? instead of me having to shift click each track in order to select multiple tracks?

    • @marcushuyskensmusic
      @marcushuyskensmusic  5 лет назад +2

      I think the function youre looking for is "EDIT > Select All On Tracks" you can find it in the edit menu OR Shift+Command+A (MAC) / Shift+Ctrl+A (PC) Let me know if that's what you're looking for. :)

      Actually i figured it out! if i hold ctr and then use the arrow to click and highlight the tracks it works! I have another question about this method. I am taking a course that recommends to quantize the drums in sections what do you think of this? i tried slicing and then quantazing with this method but it doesnt seem to work well as if i were to do it all together. what do you think?

    I just tried this method and it doesn't seem to be working for me. I followed everything step by step but whenever I playback, a lot of my tracks are out of sync with one another. I'm not exactly sure why I'm getting a different result.

    • @marcushuyskensmusic
      @marcushuyskensmusic  5 лет назад

      just to be clear - are you saying the drum tracks are NOT staying in sync with each other as a group? ie they are not moving (phase locked) with each other?

    • @KGTv123
      @KGTv123 5 лет назад

      @@marcushuyskensmusic thanks so much for the response, Marcus. So I did everything you showed in the video. I used my kick in and snare top as the guide tracks, analyzed them both individually to get the bend markers to land where I wanted. Then I grouped all of my drums tracks and unchecked all of them and then only selected to kick in and snare top. Then clicked on a track so all the regions would be highlighted and clicked apply. I then played back the audio and I was hearing kick drums happening out of sync with the other mics, flam sounding snare hits and overall very washy sounding. Its not a complex song by any means, which is why I thought it would be a good candidate to practice with. I'm not sure if it's my room tracks that are too out of phase with the rest of the drums due to their distance or what the exact issue is. I had to undo the edits and just leave the drums the way they were. You had a great explanation of this method and I want to keep working with it, because I see how well it worked for you.

    • @KGTv123
      @KGTv123 5 лет назад

      @@marcushuyskensmusic sorry I think I may have not answered your question clearly enough. When I hit apply all of the fades and cutes are in the same place, but not that I think about it, I don't think any of the audio really seemed to shift much. I'll have to rewatch your video at that step and see if I notice yours moving much

  • @word8623
    @word8623 4 года назад

    This did not work for me at all on two songs. The drums actually came out much worse. Is this something that doesn't work for swing beats? How would you recommend doing this for a jazz swing beat?

    • @marcushuyskensmusic
      @marcushuyskensmusic  4 года назад +1

      This method really depends on setting the proper quantize value for the program-material, as well as making sure the bend markers are created as accurately as possible.. (ie not too many false triggers)
      With respect to swing values, you could try using some of the different Swing Values for 8th notes and 16th Notes.. If you click the Quantize Grid Settings in Studio One - You can choose 20% SW, 40% SW, 60% SW, 80% SW, and 100% SW..
      Having said that, I have never attempted to quantize Jazz Drums with Swing. Most of the time, I'm doing this, its for pop tracks that the artist wants to be pretty much 100% on the grid.
      Please let me know if my suggestion helps? Cheers, M 🍻

    • @HoHoHooey
      @HoHoHooey 4 года назад

      @@marcushuyskensmusic Hi Marcus, thanks for replying to me. I did try various swing and percentage settings, but was never able to make it work that way. I figured it out, and unfortunately, the problem was a sloppy drummer. It was actually straight 16th notes most of the way through. It took a lot of editing by hand. The issue was the tempo we recorded at was 80 bpm, but the drummer was playing 16th notes on the hats most of the song, and every tiny hit that was early or late really stuck out on the song because of the slow tempo. In retrospect, I probably should have set the metronome at 120, rather than 60, and I might have used the hi-hat track for the bend markers as well. What I ended up doing was going through and splicing every hat that was off and dragging the drums to the grid. It took me three days and almost 20 hours, and I have learned a lot. First, I will never tell a drummer that it is good enough if it isn't, just to keep the peace. A lot of musicians get frustrated having to play their parts over and over, so I will just say, "OK, I think that will work," thinking I can fix it later. Second, if you have a lot of 16th notes in a song, it is worth considering doubling the tempo on the metronome for the sake of quantizing parts. For the amount of time I spent on this track, it would have been better to record the sections in parts and to insist on tighter playing. Thanks again, Marcus!
