Time spent here with you is just like going to your besties house to craft together. You make me laugh and you dont act like a professional in that you arent afraid to let loose and say something silly or even once in while kind goofy. I feel like I just spent time with a good friend jokin and having fun. I need this like you cant even imagine Gayle so thank you. Oh and I'm making an altered book so this is very informative on top of havin a blast. Marlene. and I dont mean you arent professional in what you do. It's just you can have fun while working.
Your voice and the sound of you making art with books just stopped an anxiety attack I was having. Just wanted to say thank you. Got lost in this and then realized the anxiety was gone. Very calming and definitely inspiring.
I had no idea which direction you were headed here. There are so many versions of book altering, but I am pretty sure this one is my fav. The pages have such a sense of random order, if that is even a thing. You are so good about always adding the small things that tie the pages together. Go ahead and ink away, my friend. If you are happy, we are happy!
I love that you’ve been watching older videos, Jean! With over 800 out there, I’ve covered all most every subject (at least the ones I get questions about). But always more new things to do than I have hours in the day! I want to make a Christmas book like this one! ❤️
Gayle I think you need to decorate however you want. You absolutely love the distressed look, so do it! Everyone I watch has a different style and each brings inspiration and new techniques along with them. I do not expect them to do the same thing and indeed I do not want them to. Stay true to what you love, and continue to love what you create. We do!
Hi Gayle 🖐🏻🖐🏻 I know this video is old one but I’m laughing so hard when you are counting these book pages and said “ my brain is hurting “ because I was counting pages with you and my brain was hurting too !,, oh you makes my day better/ great everyday!, keep up your good work!! 😂😂😂❤️❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I am just now learning about junk journals, I love your channel and have learned a lot still have lots to learn. I am praying that CRAPPA doesn't mess my favorite channels.
Gayle, I just had to tell you you are my favotite teacher of crafting. I watch all your vids and so enjoy your sense of humor. It's just like your right here with me. I get sooooo many ideas from you! (Not enough time lol to do it all!) Please please keep on keepin on! Hugs
I am watching these in reverse order. Just call me backward! Lol but this is as interesting as it is tedious. Maybe I just like listening to you. I am doing junk journals. I think the best will be my sons. Pics from his mission will fill the pockets and tucks. I like your projects. Learning loads!
Rewatching this video...just bought a new botanical tulip book for the illustrations it is large and heavy...decided to make a vintage postcard journal with pockets and tucks to showcase the postcards so they are removable...saving some illustrations and pages for collage...this video is perfect for me...thanks again for all you share 🐇❤️
I love how you saved the illustration pages! I plan on altering a giant flower book (with lots of photo pages) for my wedding (guest book/photo album) and that’s what I hope to do!! Ha! I find I end up doing that-excusing myself to look for stuff!!😊 You’re too fun!!❤️
I have been watching too many of your videos. I knew you were looking for ink. lol I was thinking she needs to distress. I am hooked on Inking also. I like the definition. I am going to try to alter a book after watching this.
Whenever I alter a book, I tend to obliterate everything - I quite like this gentle way of altering, leaving some of the pages with illustrations intact. You gave me some good ideas, thank you!
Gayle I tune into you first thing in the very early morning and you truly make my day begin with a smile. You are my favourite artist and I am always inspired to do some crafting after watching you and listening to your cheerful voice. Thanks so much 💫
Gayle, I thoroughly enjoyed this video then decided to craft with you in my own altered book. Thank you. Hugs to you and your family with prayers for your daughter.
thanks for showing me my 1st altered media book tutorial. I just happened to come across the mixed media artwork on pintrest and just thought maybe i have found my new niche in my art world. anyway thanks for the help your book is coming along beautifully
Thanks so much, I just bought a blank page book, real thick , & wondered how to alter it, thanks for showing,I knew to take pages out , but wasn’t sure....
I sat down in front of the TV to begin an altered book, turned on your channel for company, and there you were Beginning an Altered Book! I'm starting my second altered book, but it's my first vintage altered book.
It's amazing that you do what you do. I enjoyed watching you very much. I've never watched anyone change a book like this before. I feel I'm learning so much.
hiya Gayle new subbie here... If you will switch to a metal ruler and turn it over so that the corked backing is face up and you lay the flat metal part flat against the paper, you'll have zero issues tearing papers even the tiny strips. thanks so much for the videos. you've inspired me to craft again after many years off.
How fun is this???? I had a basic idea of what an altered book was and no desire whatsoever to make one until I watched this video, and now I’ve been digging through my stash trying to find a book I can alter!!! I can’t wait to see what else you do with yours!!!
Love your altered book already. I borrowed an idea from another crafter to keep the metal teeth strip of the foil or plastic wrap box. Keep it attached to the cardboard strip it's glued to. When you tear paper with it you get that lovely serrated look. It is easier to hold flat compared with a ruler.
Great video again Now I feel confident to make a start myself. Every morning I look forward to watching you create Thanks for always making your videos count Much love from Melbourne, Australia xx
As a kid I watched Romper Room every single day. I loved Miss Florence. I waited, with bated breath, to hear my name called out at the end of the program. She said all my siblings names on various days but never my name. I couldn’t figure out how she saw my siblings, who were at school, but couldn’t see me right in front of the TV. Then on the day Miss Florence finally said my name I was over the moon happy. My faithful viewership finally paid off. The first 15 years of my life I only met 1 other “Andrea”. It was not a wildly popular name. When I graduated from college, in just one of my college classes, there were 5 “Andreas”. It’s nice to know I’m not the only Andrea in the world anymore. 🥳💁🏻♀️👏🏽
I have never done an altered book and this looks very interesting. Now you have my brain wanting to do one of these. Another fantastic crafting journey.
Another project that you make me want to do. As regards to inking - embrace your style, it's part of why I (and I'm sure, others) love watching you. If you're enjoying it, we are enjoying it. ;)
Gayle I know you did this a year ago, But you inspired me to do my first one. Thank You so much for your excellent video that is so easy to go by. I truly love it.
Thanks for another video and start of another project. I went to our local library and they gave me a dozen hardcover books in Japanese that they did not need. One of the books, the pages are very old and when I folded a page, it almost ripped in half, so I will be treasuring this book, but I will use pages from the other books, in some of my junk journals. Thanks again!
I,m new in begining this form for art , but now i have startet beging with a altered book . I,m looking forward to start dekopage it :) I look at your wideos a lot, and learn so much to see you :)
These first pages turned out lovely and looking forward to seeing how the rest of the book developed. Can't wait to try this on the book I got. Hope you are having a very restful and enjoyable retreat, Gayle. It's been good to watch some of these videos I haven't seen before while you have been gone. God Bless. Sue
Gayle, still catching up in your videos and was so excited to see your new project was an altered book. Not only that, but you’re doing a series on it. Looking forward to viewing the rest!
Gayle, this is a fun video to watch. Love the altered book so far. I do have to say I try to tell you “it’s alright to ink the edges because that’s your style”. Don’t change a thing.
I finished my first altered book and I love it!! Thanks so much for your clear instructions. I really love your videos and usually have them playing while I work on journals.
I work on a glass desk and I found out it makes certain craft tools slide out of place. I make sure I use my mat or tape brown craft paper on it. Great tutorial on altering an old book. On my to do list. I came across old typing paper from back in the day at my mom’s house, apparently my dad had bought it for my sisters and I when we had typing homework back in the early 70’s, it’s almost like tracing paper, very light and I was able to print on it using my printer. The paper also aged over the years, so happy to see that. My dad was a crafter himself, found some hidden goodies that I could use in Junk Journals. Would you gesso lightly over the words in the book and then collage over it, kinda do a mix media page in the book? It’s such a pleasure watching your videos. TY 😎
Good morning Gayle (well, it's morning here in the UK!) I am so happy that you are walking us through altering a book as I have many that I don't want to completely cut up but had no idea on how/where to start on altering them to make them more functional instead of just sitting there doing nothing as I don't have the heart to completely gut them!! Thanks for sharing, much love, Victoria xx
What a great idea. A collage book. Love it as I love to collage. Going to do this. I have a book I just altered too. Thanks for the great inspiration and you had me laughing and pointing things out like “no put it there”. Enjoying this video.
oh Gayle yay yay yay lol - i love playing in my altered book and i look forward to using your inspiration to continue - thank you so much for all you do hugs xx
Love it! I’ve done a few pages following LorriMarie Jenkins. Such fun! The rule is, it’s your book, you get to decide what you like. So, distress away!
Hi. I just finished my first altered book following this video. I posted a short video of it on Junk Journal Junkies. I just wanted to thank you for all your inspiration!

Hi Gayle, Lov'in this altered book so far. Can't wait to see more!
WOW so many great projects to try! Now all I need is a whole lot more time! 🤗
Gayle, this is a fun video to watch. Love the altered book so far. I do have to say I try to tell you “it’s alright to ink the edges because that’s your style”. Don’t change a thing.
Really in love with this project. Thank you so much for teaching me. Greetings from South Spain 😀
Oh brother. Another new craft idea I have to try. Gayle, you are such an enabler 🤑
I’m so excited you are doing an altered book as I have been wanting to do one too! So, I’m crafting with you! Thank you for sharing! ❤️
WOW, Gayle. I love the way you have put together odd bits and pieces and created a masterful collage page. I love it.
I'm glad you shared this. I've made glue books and had no idea how you were going to use a bound book. It really looks like fun.

Yes, gessoing the pages would be cool! You’d probably have to be careful not to use too much and buckle the pages though. ❤️
I used the cutter edge (including the paper it is attached to) off a wax paper box and glued it to the edge of a ruler. It tears wonderfully!!!
I think I will try this. Thanks for the videos. I enjoyed you and your beautiful journal in progress. On to part 2!💜
Good morning Gayle! Love this altered book beginning! Can’t wait for more lol ❤️🌹 have a blessed day
Good morning Gayle (well, it's morning here in the UK!)
I am so happy that you are walking us through altering a book as I have many that I don't want to completely cut up but had no idea on how/where to start on altering them to make them more functional instead of just sitting there doing nothing as I don't have the heart to completely gut them!!

Perfect timing! I’ve been wanting to learn more about doing an altered book. Lots of instruction and tips. Great video, as always.
