As a bookbinder this makes me cry in so many ways 😭😭😭😭 but as a junk journal-er and creator, I think this is awesome! I love how you explain about the gluing the 2 pages together at the beginning/end of each signature - that is very important because the way stitched binding is done, usually each signature is not individually knotted, so by ripping out multiple pages, you will lose structural integrity, and by gluing them together, you kind of re-gain that structure. If you don't glue them together at the start/end of each signature, your book won't fall apart right away, because a thin line of glue is holding the thread at the spine, but eventually it will, especially if you rip seams for an altered book (i've seen many people do it like this). I would love to do a book like this, but because of my binding knowledge, I would just rip the seams, remove a bunch of pages, add new endpapers and re-bind with each signature knotted by stitching into a muslin "spine" glued to card stock, so I could have space in between each signature for bulk.. similar to a junk journal 😅😅 and then I would glue the new endpapers. I would probably add some 12mm cloth tapes along the stitching as well, to make it extra sturdy. For most, this would probably be too much to do, because most people just want to get to the art 😂 but for me, bookbinding is a passion. Thanks for the video! Enjoyed watching!

When you have a book that large are the signatures the same or approximately the same number of pages?

Oh my goodness I feel like Alice falling down the rabbit hole...it has taken me multiple rewinds and yet I still managed to podge four pages together. They can stay like that. I have moved on to another bit of the thankfully large book and may or may not have got it right this time. The whole video has finished and now I need to lie down in a dark room for a week before I Google gelatos. Bet it's not ice cream.

Finally got around to looking on your videos for starting an altered book. Now I need to search for an appropriate book (one that is not glued) but sewn. I'll have to hit my favorite used book store where I always find tons of inspiration. As always your videos are a joy to listen to and I always learn so much and am so inspired. Never too late to learn something new and i"m already inspired to create something with focal points from the first nine years of my granddaughter's life, something that will be fun to create and hopefully some day she will be inspired to create on her own. She is already inspired by me since age two but these new techniques are so much more fun than just drawing. .

I have an art journal hack for you. You know the butcher paper that they double wrap your chicken with at Fresh Market? I think this is as good as the teflon paper, AND FREE!

Can I just say that I think I you are amazing! A little background...I'm a recovering addict and have found crafting is an awesome outlet/hobby. My mother-in-law happened to have a yard sale and was going to throw out some books. I took one which had an altered book idea in it. Google led me to RUclips, then to you. You don't try to be too much like some ppl with how they talk and act or background music/noise. Just calm, happy and fun. I love love love it. Journaling and crafting is great for my sobriety so to find something like this...PERFECT! Lol. Thanks for being a part of that. One down side, I'm new to this and have so many questions. Wish I could sit in the room with you while doing this lol. Thank GOD for Google lol.

Hello LorrieMarie....I've actually used white gesso with a bit of black acrylic paint and it works beautifully.

How can you hide the book? As you are showing the pages, they all have titles. Ralph Waldo Emerson. Probably the complete works (1904). Why would it matter what book it is? Maybe I'm just a dense 'guy'. LOL!

I am so glad I found you a few weeks ago! I am the “crafter” for a week long Girl Scout camp. I always try to find something different for the girls to work on, to broaden their horizons and give them experience in multiple artistic areas. This year I decided we needed to learn how to do visual journals and use as many different techniques as I can. You have provided so many good lessons that I can show the girls. What is the pencil that you use to shade areas on your pages?

I noticed my Modpodge gets thick, will it make a difference if I add a little bit of water to thin it out a bit so it’ll spread nicely?

what are underpants & gelatos? These Altered books are new to me. When I here underpants I think of underwear.
Underpants = means pages torn up and glued(mod pogde) before adding color or focal point.
Gellatos are creamy crayon-type art color

So I may have read some of the comments below about said hidden book title and author.. and honestly I feel that's a wonderful beginning layer, a wonderful energy to start with. Not saying this is the author of your book, but I'm tempted to go find a book by Walt Whitman because you know, from what I know of the man, I think he would be delighted to know that his words were carefully woven into some deliciously yummy mixed media.... maybe I can find a sewn copy of Leaves of Grass somewhere.. that gives me a really warm feeling.

Working on this great project!! I have a bit of trouble with going signature by signature because I change my mind a lot (my process!). So if I remove pages from the middle of the signature that kind of makes it impossible to remove further pages. I think. Is that a book of Emerson's essays? Please tell me :)
I was happy to see that one of my 'give away' books had signatures, went into the craft room and began preparing the book, the signatures are GLUED in, grrr. I have already messed the book up, so I'm going to use it, but it's a pain. Live and learn. Thank you for the tutorials, they are great!
been there done that! blah....but yes...live and learn...the best thing to do is to start a 'healthy' book and use some of the art work as 'add on pages' arlene.....it will all work out! see you on the table!

I just started an altered book, taking out pages & did a napkin decoupage with my PVA glue...it was so rough, sanded it. Better results. Ahh!! So frustrating. Thank you for your video. I watched my 1st altered book video the other day as am new to junk journaling. The creator preferred glued pages easier than with signatures. I went to charity store & purchased 6 glued pages books that I liked the content, color and built of took me hours to get the right ones. Now.....ok I'll have to work with what I have. These are to be created as gifts for my kids and grandchildren. Lord don't let them fall apart. Ok, I'll keep learning from you, thank you.

Hi LorriMarie, I'm an avid follower of your channel, I've just started my third altered book, I just can't stop. Do you have any tips for correcting pages that bubble after gluing down the underpants? I think it may be my glue, think it's too wet, because half way through I switched to a more concentrated PVA, and it worked better, but not completely. :D
well paul....it could be a couple of things....too much wet adhesive...yes...also it could be the pages of the book....some just bubble and wrinkle more than others...embrace the wrinkles and call it texture? that is what i do....lol....good luck...try really smoothing everything out with pressure and a credit card paul....go create, go play, go have fun!!!

Can’t always find “sewn in” books... so I choose the best well made “glued in” books possible (if I have to😬.)... mine haven’t fallen apart thanks to your tips...sometimes I may have to use washi tape or masking tape or even modpodge as page strengtheners 🤞🏼...today, happy to say I have a beautiful 1926 sewn in book...yummy🤗
oh my gosh eva......congrats on finding a sewn in book.....it is not as easy as it used to be....darn it....i am going to have to be more diligent when i go to library books sales and thrift stores! i have held many a book together with masking tape and fabric....see you on the table with a healthier book!!!
This video is very helpful! I really love how you showed us about signatures and talked about the sewed together Pages! It helps me a lot my very first Altered book came apart quite a bit and I had to mend the bind Now I fully understand why! LOL thank you so much. You rock!

They schmoosh and smudge wonderfully well and glide easily over ANY texture!! Three hundred and seventy six pages? What are the measurements of this handsome hunk of a hardback? xoxo!!

The book I have has 5 pages in each signature... I have pulled out two pages in each signature, but that leaves me with 6 pages between signature centres.... am I better to take out another page in each signature, so that I can paste 4 pages together between signature centres, because if I leave it at 6, I have 3 and 3, but the signatures do not get glued together?

i believe so shelly....i only use the books with the sewn in signatures tho...the glued in ones fall apart during the altering...i hope that helps shelly....go create, go play, go have fun!!!

Your page removal in this video is different from the first video you did on preparing the book. Is it because one book had more signatures?

I've been on the table a lot lately!
I've been following you for several months... I didn't see a purpose (for me) to make this style art into a journal or altered book. I used your ideas to create greeting card art to send to people I loved... a lot 😉. And actually, not sure what I'm going to do with the un-sent cards. I know I just need to make these little gems and I'm getting a lot of them. Well, the other day a friend gifted me a book about artists using art as daily prayer/time devotionals... and each day there is an art project to do. I thought... bingo! I'll use Lorriemarie Jenkins' altered book idea to do my daily devotional activities in, so, pulled out your RUclips directions for altered books to make a book canvas to work on.. the daily devotionals will be together and easy to get to each day before I start my studio time... I started my painting, mixed-media art journey several years ago when I retired. I began entering my work in local art shows and began selling, getting prizes and attention. I had to back off because I was letting my community dictate what I needed to do.., and the joy of getting to the studio was fading. I had to get in my studio (alone), and work open-ended without worrying about shows, opinions, time... making cards and small pieces has brought me back to finding joy in expressing through mixed-media art.

Kimberley here. I am so happy with my first book! It is 99% done and may you allow me to remind people watching your wonderful videos to make sure glue and or paint tops are screwed back on to their bottles. Left to do in my 1st book, I need some pages with quotes on them and then it is finished. I was double checking everything and adding some of your boho beads for dangles, when on a single page shaker window ( yes I figured out how to do a one page spread) I noticed a small gap that needed some glue. Well what do ya think happened? The cap squirted off and down came a whole lot of glue all over my page. I sat there and thought how am I going to fix this. I wanted to cry! It got cleaned up with minimal damage and like you say "there is always a way to figure how to fix something".
Thank you for all your wonderful videos and now I am starting a 2nd book. Because I taught so many art classes in my last 15 years I thought I better watch how to start a new book because I didn't the first time! It all turned out wonderfully no matter. You are an addiction LorriMarie!

Hi LorrieMarie, would this work using acrylic black paint, modpodge, and gesso, if you don’t have black gesso.💕
if it were me...i might try adding the black paint to the gesso yes...it may change the consistency a bit....and may not sand as well....but....use what we have...right catherine? oh yes!!! go create, go play, go have fun catherine!!!

Thank you so much. I wanted a tutorial from start to finish. I have seen some of these kind of books and wanted to try it ( for personal mementos.. movie stubs, child art, kiosk pictures, family recipes, etc. ) I just didn't know where to go.
