I actually like this reaction format. Maybe you could react to new software technologies more often?
I like it too, it's fun!
@@TheCherno I could get behind more reaction/reviews of upcoming technologies, both hardware and software, Its an exiting and constantly moving field!
@@TheCherno hmm. If you created this "devs react to softwares and hardwares" genre, it would eventually be better than gamers reaction and other devs would do it so, still i like this kind of content.
@@TheCherno Same here. I'm not into gaming dev so I only follow your C++ videos but as a hopeless tech lover I really enjoyed your Unreal reaction vid.
Yes please! We value your knowledge as a game engine developer with your experience at EA. Thank you again
Everyone write a comment and like because the world needs to hear about this mans reaction. Every other video is just like "yeah this is good wow such big numbers oOOOoOoO" but this man actually knows his stuff and I appreciate his input more than any other youtuber I've watched.
exactly...his UE5 react video was super insightful.
I like INNOCENCEII channel too check him out .. And yes i like watching people who knows what they are talking about whether be it against my bias or not at least they are experts ..
Agree and I'm hereby writing my comment. I've actually seen this great level of insight from another youtuber called NX Gamer. He made a video titled "Next Generation Consoles: The SSD Leap is the biggest? | Let's Talk" and it's fenomenal. Definitely recommend watching that if you haven't
Check out nx gamer. He is one of those who knows his stuff
Exactly. I’d rather hear input from an actual developer than a typical fanboy trying to undo hard work and dedication. I value a developers input more as it’ll benefit me the consumer.
I like this video not because it's a reaction, but because it's explaining and expounding on things that only a developer would know. As a consumer, I find having this perspective very interesting.
Dave Grant 👍🏽
👍
expanding on content that is reacted to is the real reaction content
The dislikes are from people who thought this was a PS5 reveal when it was actually a game developer conference.
“Boring”. I am not a developer, but it was really interesting - I would not have realised the technical progress from a demo alone!
I feel like I'm weird by saying this, but am I the only one who enjoyed sitting through that whole thing? It was really interesting to me and I never got bored once. When it was over, I was like "Wait, it's been an hour already!?".
@@judgaming3041 you are not the only one, I enjoyed every minute of this presentation
Jud Gaming I’ve rewatched it at least 2 more times because I wanted to make sure my eyes didn’t glaze over at certain points. Cerny is always good to hear crime because he truly lives and breaths hardware.
The thing is, even though we can understand why, but they still missed the february event, then they sad their timline this year will be almost the same as it was in the past. February, then E3 time event. Then came this, they announced it publicaly, and so a shit tons of fans have tuned in. 90% of them probaly couldn't understand a single sentence, while they were expecting exciting things from the event since it was a public event....
Just saw that Linustechtips recommended this video on his latest one
Honestly why I'm here

Perhaps the SSD in the PS5 is... *B O N K E R S*
I was enjoying this a lot. Please make part 2 quickly.
This. This right now.
Yeah, it's great will you release it tomorrow? 😉
Yeah! I didn't have patience to watch sony video, but with Cherno commenting it was really nice.
Yuri de Matos it’s always fascinating hearing a developers input. Helps you respect both the developer and their games as well as a console.
Come one hurry and release the next one. xD
On "The road to PS5" video the dislikes are there, because a lot of people misinterpreted the topic of the talk - they where waiting game announcements or a hardware reveal. Even though Sony clearly stated that this is the talk meant for GDC. Aka technical stuff for developers.
Oh and of course those that are disappointed PS5 has less TFLOPs than the Xbox.
Pretty sad... it's an excellent talk so far, and some serious improvements!
The Cherno I absolutely loved it, watched 3 times over 😅
@ Is also Sony's fault. At this point, they should know better. If it is a GDC exclusively Technical talk, do not announce it in your Playstation accounts as if it were the counterpoint to the previous Xbox Inside where the XSX was detailed.
No Sony's GDC Talk has ever been announced like this one before, precisely because it is only relevant to a small niche of people. Maybe they felt preassured by the "console war" and Microsoft and they thought that giving that to the general public was better than giving nothing. Well, gues what. Afortunately, they learnt from that and kept "silent" until the UE5 announcement, which was an excelent movement in terms of marketing. And, according to recent interviews, thats going to be the plan ahead.
Minus 2 teraflops
@@Efore maybe people need to learn that shit is going to be different when there's a damn pandemic going on. Dont you think that made them have to change what they were doing
Mark Cerny is such a great orator, he made things so much easier to comprehend even for a person (like myself) who has ZERO knowledge in game development
@N0V4 So a backup voice actor for DeadPool?
@N0V4 he has a wife
really I find him so boring to listen to
Cerny is the embodiment of passion for games. He freaking dropped out of college to join Atari back in 1982. He's done every single job there is to do in game creation, and has had a hand in many of gaming's classic games and franchises. He recognized the potential of Naughty Dog and Insomniac early on and worked with them to create some of their biggest hits.
My point is that this is a man who truly understands all aspects of game development, probably more than any other person alive. He has literally done it all. And then he went on to study hardware and consult Sony on the PS4, to the extent that he became lead designer on all of Sony's consoles from that point forward.
A lot of people who don't know of his accomplishments watch him speak and think he's just some Sony guy spewing PR speak, but he doesn't even work for Sony. He never has. He started his consulting business in 1998 and has been doing that ever since. It always pains me when I read comments dismissing him or misunderstanding the technical stuff he talks about. Those people have no idea.
He is a very good presentator. He does a lot to make the technology presented digestible for many people. He's clear, consise, isn't trying too hard. You most likely just find the content of the presentation boring because there are no flashy lights and loud music
How's it feel to suddenly have literally hundreds of thousands of people waiting for you to release a new video?
well deserved!
Not just waiting, might I add, but filled with anticipation and on the edge of their seats. I just saw this video now, subscribed and as soon as I get that notification I will stop literally anything I am doing (including breathing).
Mark is really smart guy, fluent in Japanese too and he is one of the reasons Sony and the PlayStation 4 are smashing the competition... looking forward to seeing what the PS5 can really do!
Cerny is the embodiment of passion for video games. He's done every job there is to do when it comes to creating games. I truly believe that because of this, he understands game development better than any other person alive. This is what makes him so compelling when it comes to designing gaming hardware. Sony was smart to use his services for hardware design. While fanboys look at raw number specs and complain about one thing or another, Cerny has immersed himself in hardware knowledge in order to give developers and their games exactly what they need.
@@rars0n exactly! It's just like you take good care of the chicken and give them they need and they will produce good eggs
Watching an actual developer reacting and analyzing that on the fly, without prior knowledge to the content or the full PS5 specs, is really something else. Insightful and quite refreshing.
I’m new to your channel since the unreal engine reaction, and watching this video, I just want to say I really enjoy that you take your time to give your actual professional knowledge on game and console development and comments on every little thing. It’s really refreshing, and I could watch it all day. Please keep making content like this
Same, hope he dose more.
Totally the exact same. I’m struggling to find the differences between these systems and he’s helping me understand what actually matters.
Part 2 is where the juicy stuff appears. I know you will also like the late part of the presentation that talks about Audio .
Subscribed and already waiting for Part 2.

He's Mark Cerny, everyone in the video game industry dreams about hiring someone like him.
@@eurostar0711
Hes truly a genius, when he came up with "The Method" in a time where only 1st party Nintendo had any kind of quality standard. Sony is fortunate to have him, I'm sure when Cerny requested if he could work on the PS5 system architecture, they didn't think twice. An actual game developer mindset, coupled with a system architect, the PS5 may be the most efficient console to date.
I learned many things from this video. Thanks for your time.
There’s no better explanation than what Mark Cerny has already given in his sermon, and later clarified in his DigitalFoundry interview.
It’s tied to power usage, not temperature. It’s designed so that for the most part the clocks stay at their highest frequencies, regardless of whether the console is in a TV cabinet or somewhere cold.
It’s designed to be deterministic. The purpose is to reduce clocks when they don’t need to be so high to help with power usage and keeping the fans quiet. If a GPU is expected to deliver a frame every 16.6ms (60 FPS) and it’s done its work already in 8ms, then there’s no point it sitting there idle at 2.23Ghz sucking power and generating heat. If it could intelligently drop the clocks so that it finishes its frame just before the 16.6ms you get the same 60 FPS game, the same graphical detail, but with much less fan noise.
Anyone with a gaming PC will know that GPU utilisation is rarely at 100%
It typically takes burn tests and crazy benchmark software to get that.
Cerny seemed to suggest that you’d need quite a synthetic test to really load up both the CPU and GPU enough to cause them to declock for power reasons, and that it won’t show up in any normal game.
He said that same synthetic test would simply cause a PS4 to overheat and shutdown.
And even then, dropping power consumption by 10% only drops core clocks by a “few” percent. Which makes sense if you’re used to overclocking modern GPUs. You need to crank up the power to get even a minimal amount of extra clock, and cranking up an already jacked up GPU clock by a “few” percent barely makes a difference to performance anyway.
It’s all about keeping the fan noise down without sacrificing performance or overheating.
PS5 variable clock speeds aren’t at all the same animals as boost clocks on mobile devices or PC CPUs.
It’s closer to modern GPU overclocking where you max out your power budget, and do so with sufficient cooling that you never hit the thermal limit.
You couldn’t have a game console that scaled its clocks based on temperature. It would never work. Neither would having unpredictable or variable performance.
The PS5 devkits allow developers to intentionally select different power profiles so that they can test and profile performance.
tl;dr The variable frequency system as described by Cerny means every PS5 will play exactly the same way regardless of temperatures (to the extent a PS4 does) or whatever is happening in the game at any given moment. They all behave identically, and outside of the kind of burn-tests that would overheat and crash a PS4, the PS5 clocks stay at the “Max Capped” frequencies. If a developer wants to do something that does exceed the power budget, they can know precisely how it will react.
PS5 has a massive focus on efficiency
This man straight up being a translator from game developer language to ooga booga me speak english language, appreciate that greatly my man.

For once the YT algo was perfect
You're not kidding. A month or two ago YT's algorithm seemed to think suggesting clips of the show "The Real," quite possibly the worst show in history, for 3 or 4 weeks straight would be just what I wanted. I might have made a new account if that BS continued. This video is finally something that matches my interests.
Already waiting for part 2.
I watched this live and just had to take what was said as true because I have no experience. Seeing someone in the know either confirming or disagreeing with some points is very valuable to someone like myself.
Keep up the great work.
Really impressed to hear from someone who knows what the layman doesn't.
Anyone here from LTT?
Ya bet, ya bish
Anyone here from austwich ?

Yeah, but this was in my recommendeds for a while now and was going to watch it eventually anyway.
When I initially watched the video from Sony, as a consumer, I was not that much impressed. With you providing much of the background information, I feel much more confident in consoles now form a PCMR perspective.
If you're worried about cutting out parts I don't care. I want to watch all of your reactions in their entirity.

Can you believe people called this presentation boring.
The people who did are clueless idiots
To a gamer, I can understand why this is boring. This is mainly addressing issues that developers experience and most gamers are unfamiliar with these terms.
it's helpful to have a knowledgeable individual break it down for a layperson
every presentation gets boring if the audience cant follow. the perception among the target audience can be completly different though. e.g. see all those "so many triangles" comments/memes from UG5 tech demo. if people don't understand something they either get bored or start making fun of something. Triangles and the amount they mentioned was just too much for the common gamer to even grasp.
I really liked how calm he explained what the ps5 is capable of...as a pc user it's rather crappy but for a console it's impressive. 😁first and last console i owned was a playstation1 in the late 1990s

I actually think the dry Cerny PS5 tech talk was more exciting than all the things MS have shown of the Series X combined. The system seems game changing, whereas Series X just looks like a nice successor to One X
That’s the vibe I got. The Xbox seX is literally a more powerful Xbox one whilst the ps5 is giving us a new controller with tons of new features, the fastest SSD, and they have a ton of great studios.
The road to PS5 event wasn't meant for the usual 0815 gamer.. but with all the respect, it was advertised as THE event, where Sony finally reveal the PS5. I really enjoyed the presentation as I am very interested in technical stuff and I'm 100% confident that Sony but also Microsoft are doing the right thing. HDDs are dead and SCSI based devices are a dead end, too. Freeing up resources and leveraging modern protocols like NVMe will keep the overall system pretty busy like all the time, instead of waiting for the HDD to deliver what's needed most.
Additionally people need to understand that they did not just plugged some SSD into their systems, used a fancy thing like NVMe, but they've also eliminated a tons of overhead. Overhead that sounds so meaningless but the impact is huge! Just think of it for a second, Sony put more performance in the data management block (e.g. compression unit, dma, co-processors and coherence engine) than into their main processor, which will be almost dedicated for gaming (maybe one for the OS)! Just my two cents! ;-)
I quite enjoyed Cerny. I like the way he speaks. Seemed very candid even when they talked about how deficient the PS4 is/was. I cannot WAIT for the PS5. I haven't been excited for a new console (like this) in decades.

These kind of reaction videos are actually really interesting and educational. Anyone can watch these presentations but to get a reaction from an expert in the field really gives more perspectives. Your reactions are far better than the usual "reaction" channels that just stare at a screen and nod along to videos they watch pretending as if they care.
And not really having a clue what difference it will all make, just acting shocked as if they actually know something.
See people sony was trying to explain to everybody that the PS5 is capable to do a lot of things not only power when Microsoft came out with a presentation of the Xbox the only thing they mention it has power and that's it and then all fanboys started criticizing Sony press conference ohh it was boring cuz they didn't show no game play
Xbox fanboys in laymen terms is just give them a bigger number n they will go wild n brag about it. No doubt the series x is powerful. But they acting like it is miles ahead of ps5 which is laughable. N any fanboy at xbox who watch people channel like zalker, dealer n colt is delusional n just watch those channels to fill their fanboy ego's. There is nothing wrong to be a fan of a specific platform but to turned a blind eye on bad business practice because that specific platform u love is being delusional. Uh.... Ps3 is "bottleneck" personified in a console.
y'know I didn't realise until now, and previous videos by Cherno, just how limiting that HDD interface is. I mean it's orders of magnitude slower than RAM, so basically when you have large files to load, your whole game has to be designed around that slow speed loading bottleneck.

Microsoft have (almost) invented a new term of ‘teraflops’. Xbox began giving their processing power in teraflops which both sounds awesome and high tech and so PlayStation now had to give their teraflop power into which was lower than Xbox by a very small percentage. Because of this people start to think that Xbox is bigger number - Xbox is more powerful.
This is why I now don’t like Xbox
I don’t think even 5% of people who use the term even know what it means. A teraflop is how many pulses the CPU generates per second. 1 teraflop is 1 trillion floating point operations per second - this certainly is a definition of more powerful however this is an unyielded usage. Xbox released two new consoles with more teraflops than the rest, but if you ever used one you would notice zero difference except for maybe the OS load times or boot speed.
Most console games are made for a certain amount of power and only that amount. It’s like running pong on a 2080TI and expecting a fancy new experience, no it’ll run identically to the original.
Xbox put nowhere near as much effort into linking their hardware and players experiences as PlayStation do, and this is shown by the fact that this video exists, people now gage how good anything is on its teraflops but as usual it’s unwise and a genuinely bad idea to try to judge something by one factor. If anybody did just a little (unbiased) research they would see clearly which console is “better”.
(Which is both of them, it’s just down to preference and stupid to argue otherwise)
This was great. Just wish the whole thing was available right now. :)
As a fellow developer it's been frustrating to chart the difference in my reaction to this presentation (excitement) from the general gaming public (meh Xbox has better gpu). So it's cool to see you have a similar reaction to my own.
But you have to understand that to get excited about this you need a pretty indepth knowledge of hardware and software development. I'd like to think I'm reasonably knowledgeable in comparison to the average person on it and even I don't understand half of what's on display or the full scope of the new possibilities it allows.
So it's not surprising at all that a deeply technical presentation went over the majority of people's heads. It doesn't help either that Games Journalism is absolutely inept at their job and haven't done a good job at all in breaking it down in an understandable way for people without game development knowledge.
This is the kind of content that I think even gamers would like to see. How these kinds of technical advancements actually affect game developers. Or how DX12's mesh renderer actually completely overhauls and improves the GPU pipeline. Or how does the raytracing cores on a GPU affect game development in general.
I would love to see more of these kinds of content from you, since you are actually making a game engine (which would actually directly compile for specific hardware, and in that sense, this affects you more than the game developers themselves since you're the one opening up these possibilities for devs), and not just a game developer.
Sorry for the long post but I hope this helps. PS5 Points from "The Road to PS5" These are things I gathered from Cerny. Cheers to Cherno for these videos too.
I understood about 10% of this thanks
@@jeremiahbriney4899 lol
@@jeremiahbriney4899 10% is better than none lol
But on this start point I think most people who have a "gaming" PC will have better specs than the average current console such as PS4. But as a PC gamer I can admit the next consoles are very impressive and I will probably get one ( probably PS5 because Xbox doesn't really have "excluves") I will also admit the PS5 SSD is way better than average Gaming PC.
Love how you ponies take every chance you get to shill the ps5
Hell blade 2 isn't a exclusive
Medium isnt an exclusive
Scorn isnt an exclusive
Halo isnt an exclusive
????
Loving these reacting videos👌👌
It's amazing how short this video felt, that says a lot about how interesting it is, great job and eagerly waiting for the other parts.
Mark Cerny looks and sounds like a tech character from GTA games.. he also moves his arms jus like video game animations.. lmao
I think creatively working around hardware limitations can be part of the fun of making a game. Like watch Ars Technica's video on the making of Crash Bandicoot. Or look at how John Carmack developed Wolfenstein 3d and Doom.
A quick question. Could the SSD in ps5 help the CPU in providing better frame rates?
technically if the cpu doesnt have to do many of ssd task then technically means more of cpu then can be used to improve frame rate but who knows
U just destroyed PC Master Race with reason n logic. Damn boi
Nice to see a true developer's reaction... Can't wait for the next part. Great thoughts. Keep it this way 👍
That monologue at the beginning was fantastic. I cannot believe how many people are completely oblivious to this.
His ramble was cool and all but it was kind of a pointless ramble since that's not at all why people were disliking the video. His ramble assumed it was because of the fanboy console wars but it was because gamers went into it thinking it'd be an event showing off games and the console, rather than just a technical showcase for developers.
Look at the pissy mustard rice too afraid to accept being called out.
@@Neurotik51 What are you talking about? The only games that are exclusive to consoles are the ones made by the platform holders ie. they couldn't exist without being exclusive. They would have no financial fundament to be made.
@@ThatOneDudeWhoPostsStuff that might be possible. But that wasn't what I commented on. He started out talking about the dislike ratio may be because of Xbox fanboys or PC fanboys. The monologue that he held was about why making games on a console is so different from making games on PC, and that is a point that almost never gets made in these online fanboy wars. And the fanboy wars are fiery at the moment. So many people are dragged into console fanboy wars, you wouldn't believe it.
@@MansMan42069 lmao. Cool it down.
Anyone else check once a day to see if part 2 was uploaded?
The dislikes on the said video is because ALOT of people including YT gaming news channels somehow didn't hear that it's a GDC talk. Also it's ''cool'' to hate on PS5.
I love this Format man! It really is cool seeing a Dev reacting to such stuff! Really cool!
Hey i’ve just discovered your channel after the Unreal Engine 5 video you did. Your reaction and the way you break down the video is terrific. Very interesting to hear your thoughts.
With the DualSense coming for PS5 playing games on PC is gonna be so inferior..!! The feeling that we are gonna get on the DualSense when playing games is gonna be some new experience that a PC will never be able to replicate.
The Cherno, what happened?
We're waiting on your next video following this one.
I hope you're OK actually. It's been 4 days and I'm worried you caught Covid-19 or something to that effect.
@@SebHighDef Thank you!
Been coming to this channel for 5 days waiting for part 2 damn
