    If you want another song that will make you feel like dancing, check out their -cover- upgrade of "O Come All Ye Faithful." Kevin was heavily involved with the arrangement; his father is from Nigeria, and Kevin wanted Pentatonix to sing a hymn the way his parents do - dancing with joy. Exactly as sacred music ought to be performed, "mak[ing] a joyful noise."

    Yes, Scott tends to be the one out in front. They don't technically have a lead singer, and there are songs that largely focus on one of the other four, but their formula tends to be, Scott starts, everyone gets a verse or moment, and Scott wraps it up. Yes, it has always been that way, partly because the Sing Off insisted there was a lead, and that was their start as Pentatonix, partly because it was Scott (encouraged by Ben Bram) who tapped the shoulders of his friends Mitch and Kirstie, and then recruited Avi and Kevin to audition as a band, and partly because he is the most socially extroverted in a way. He tends to be the master of ceremonies at their concerts, too. and he instigates a lot of the random things they do, which is a big part of their success. That being said, I don't think he considers himself the leader so much as the cheerleader. They are all extremely humble and collaborative.

  • @kristinhowk6465

    Scott (apparently aka Ryan 😆) is the default lead singer. He sings the first line in roughly 80% of PTX songs, though you’re right that they don’t have a designated lead singer.
    All of the current PTX members (except maybe Kevin) have musical theater backgrounds, with Kirstie doing a 3 month stretch on Broadway (Kinky Boots) back in early 2018.

    So just as the electric bass often works in step with the drums in pop music, Kevin (beatboxer+body percussion, as well as cello and tenor vocals) and Matt (vocal bass, bass singer) often come in on the same beats. Pentatonix has the best emotional intelligence of any of the current a capella groups, as well as the sharpest arrangements. More PTX please sir. BTW, the 90s Dance Medley will definitely get you dancing.

    Fun fact, Scott started writing a musical during early covid days and I think it maybe happening.
    I think all the current members except Kevin were Heather kids, so the emotion from all of them isn't surprising, they always tend to bring that to the table.
    Scott has always been the heart of the group, even when he wasn't leading he was a big driving force in the backing vocals, he's so versatile with such a wide range.
    That said, he's definitely been levelling up in the last few years, they all have, really. I think it's very notable especially in Scott's solo single Mars, Mitch's cover of Your Power, and Kirstie's lead in Seasons of Love. I think the break from touring during quarantine was really good for them all.

    Subscribing in hopes of more Pentatonix. Just be aware that their label and VEVO block their official videos aggressively. Most US reactors can get around that by heavily altering the video (increasing transparency, overlaying a graphic, reducing the video size, changing the aspect ratio, etc) But the rules seem to be different in different countries. Another option is not to do official videos; there are lots of great songs that didn't get an official video but have audio and / or lyric videos. And recently the quantity and quality of live videos has increased and since most of those are fan-posted they aren't as subject to blocks.

    'Mitch is iconic and voice of an angel' - sooo true! They are just amazing. Kirsten, not Kristen and Scott, not Ryan but you can be forgiven as it's been a minute for you! I think Scott and Mitch feel the emotion of this as they were bullied a lot, Mitch particularly, when they were kids. PTX don't need complex backgrounds, their talent is enough. In terms of Scott taking the lead, there probably are more songs where he takes the lead than where the others do, (right from the start of Pentatonix as he was the person who created them) but the others all do take the lead (apart from Kevin) in singing terms for some of the songs. There are several where Mitch takes the lead and a few where Kirstie does (I can think of four of those off the top of my head) and a couple where Matt takes the lead. Often, though, they all get to sing a verse.

  • @Badger77722

    My understanding is that the musical Dear Evan Hansen is one of Ryan's (aka Scott) favorites, and so it's not real surprising that he puts a lot of emotion into the song.
    Unless Kevin is doing something other than beatboxing, Matt is only singing bass, not beatboxing. While Matt's the best of the rest of the group at beatboxing, he's not nearly in Kevin's class at that. To hear Matt beatbox for a little bit, check out the end of "Havana" when Kevin is playing a muted trumpet - well, sounding like one, anyway.

      Oh, Kevin's playing a trumpet in "Havana," just as he plays drums the rest of the time. It's invisible, but he has a complete drum kit. You can see him reach out with an invisible drumstick to hit an invisible drum, and the drum sounds. Doesn't matter that you know the sounds are all coming directly from him, *you saw him hit that drum and you heard the drum,* so it *must* be there. It's one of the things I like most about Kevin: he can make me see the invisible instruments, including his trumpet in "Havana."

  • @ruth2141
    @ruth2141 Год назад +10

    When Pentatonix arranges a song, they start with a plan including who will be doing lead(s), and as you say they usually pass the lead around. But now and then one member will dominate. This is definitely a Scott-centric arrangement, though his sound is more pop than Broadway and I'm a bit sorry Kirsten and Mitch didn't get featured more and Matt didn't get any lead. It may have to do with the way they wanted the song to build, and keeping the lead with one person helps with that.

    • @margretrosenberg420
      @margretrosenberg420 Год назад +1

      PTX always chooses singers based primarily on the needs of the song. With a song like "Hallelujah," there's no particular reason for any one singer to dominate, so they take turns leading in different verses. With "Imagine," the song has a need for them to emphasize both their harmony and their diversity, so every member takes the lead at some point, including Kevin, while the rest of the band provides amazing harmony to support the current lead (okay, that's a given - they always have amazing harmony). And then, of course, we have "Bohemian Rhapsody," where Freddie Mercury's incredible range let them cast every one of themselves as Freddie Mercury at some point in the song, which was exactly what they wanted to do, so they did. 🥰 More power to them. It was a joy to watch them having so much fun totally nailing their favorite song.
      With a Broadway show tune they're bound to choose singers with the proper ranges for the parts they're to sing, and they are highly unlikely to rearrange the song in order to let a different singer take a particular part - they would need a very good reason before they'd do that, and in this song there's no reason at all to do it, not even their own needs. They all get the lead often enough that they don't have to wrench a song into something the song was never meant to be just so that some member of Pentatonix can get some ego-strokes.

  • @margretrosenberg420
    @margretrosenberg420 Год назад +2

    Matt is the bass. The rhythm section is the combination of percussion and bass. In a band with instruments separate from themselves that would mean a drummer (or drummers) with drum kit(s), and a bass gutarist (or guitarists) with bass guitar(s). In an a cappella band it means beatboxer(s) and bass singer(s). In Pentatonix that means Kevin and Matt. Matt is producing the sounds of a bass guitar while Kevin produces the sounds of a drum kit. It may LOOK like Matt is also beatboxing, but what you're seeing is actually Matt singing the bass guitar's part, in perfect time to Kevin's invisible drum kit. The illusion that Matt is beatboxing is a result of his perfect timing.
    Matt and Kevin work very closely together, as a rhythm section must. And given that we're talking about Pentatonix it should come as no surprise that they do it perfectly.

    I completely understand about having to learn all about these groups and members. Pentatonix are the popular kids and the only group to make it into the mainstream pop culture beyond RUclips. Home Free are the country guys. VoicePlay are the theater kids. All three groups have competed on NBC's The Sing Off in the early 2010's. PTX and Home Free both won their respective seasons. Peter Hollens, an independent but truly amazing artist in his own right also competed with them and all of them have had several cross collaborations of some sort and as far as I can see are all friendly. Voctave, the choir kids, so to speak, are from around the Orlando area like VoicePlay and most of the also sing for the Voices of Liberty at Epcot. The new kids are the Bass Gang. As far as I can tell all four were independent RUclipsrs that decided to collaborate during the Pandemic. Their first video did so well that they have formed a virtual group yet never having met in person.

I'm not going to say she hates people for doing it, but it gets on her nerves a little. And Matt is doing an amazing bass line. Sounds like something someone would do on an electric bass. Name list at the is definitely their Patreon list.

    I don’t believe that Matt this is beatboxing in this song, although he can. In the song Havana Matt beatboxes to replace Kevin who is duplicating the sound of a muted trumpet. In this song Matt is doing the bass line in such a way that it may look like he’s beatboxing.

    Regarding Scott (AKA Ryan 😅) being the lead singer:
    Scott and Mitch are both gay, which almost by definition makes them outsiders in American society, which fits this song. Mitch was seriously bullied for how high his voice was when he was in high school, which was thinly disguised gay-bashing, since Mitch was out of the closet at that point (and I have trouble conceiving of the amount of courage and/or deep need it must have taken for him to come out of the closet in high school).
    Then when they got on _The Sing-Off_ in 2011 the producers were deeply "concerned" that the sexual orientation of Mitch and Scott might come out on the show, so they went to extreme lengths to keep that from happening. THEY chose and supplied the clothing Pentatonix wore, to keep Scott and Mitch from looking too gay (and I've never understood how they thought pink shirts and ties would help with that "problem"), and they pressured Kirstie to dress less modestly than she was comfortable with. After Pentatonix won, when Pentatonix did some public service promotions for Trevor House, _The Sing-Off_ edited the video to remove any mention that Trevor House was founded to support LGBTQ+ kids because gay kids are so much more likely to commit suicide. Most of the ways _The Sing-Off_ tried to suppress Mitch and Scott happened behind the scenes and went unnoticed by the general public, but suppressing the core principles of Trevor House got them in a good deal of hot water with the public, as it darn well should have.
    But one of the things the producers of _The Sing-Off_ did was a direct continuation of the bullying Mitch had received in high school, except this time it was being perpetrated by adults in a position of authority. They were afraid that any revelation of Mitch's high range would result in questions about his sexual orientation (which is really quite stupid, but apparently bigotry makes people stupid) so they wanted to keep Mitch from singing any more than strictly necessary. But they weren't afraid of Scott's baritone, so they instituted a rule that applied to all the bands on the third season of _The Sing-Off._ Each band had to select a single member who would be their lead singer throughout the season. And then they told Pentatonix that they didn't get to choose - their lead singer had to be Scott. (Incidentally, they never told the judges about the rule - more stupidity - and it applied only to the third season. They got rid of it entirely during the fourth season.)
    Pentatonix pushed back, of course. They selected songs where two leads were required, a man and a woman, so Kirstie also got to lead, but always opposite Scott. In one of their medleys they had Mitch take a solo, but they kept it to his lower registers. By the time they got to their twelfth performance (in the tenth week of the show - the schedule was brutal) Scott's voice was exhausted, and he was coming down with a cold on top of that. The judges (who weren't in on the plans of the producers and had no idea what had been going on) had assigned them to sing "The Dog Days Are Over" by Florence and the Machine for that performance, largely because it needed a strong baritone lead and they thought it would be ideal for Scott, but Scott was struggling. Their dress rehearsal was an out-of-tune disaster. They had a great arrangement, and had come up with some fantastic choreography, but they just knew that they couldn't pull it off; they were going to be embarrassed on national television and go home in second place.
    There was just one thing that they could pull out of this incipient debacle - they could give the producers a figurative middle finger and reveal the marvel that is Mitch Grassi's voice. So they gave him a short (and gorgeous) solo, and went out there to do their best and die trying, and then, of course, they nailed it. Scott's voice gave out entirely, but it waited until the last note of the song to do so. And in the process they produced the first Mitch slap ever, and turned Shawn Stockman, of Boyz II Men (who was one of the judges) into the first ever Pentaholic.
    So Pentatonix has a long tradition of Scott taking the lead. In addition, Scott is the natural leader of the group; he's totally extroverted and Pentatonix was his idea in the first place. But Pentatonix is his family, so Scott never hogs the lead - he takes it when he's the most appropriate person to do so and that's it.

      That explanation illuminated so much of what is troubling about the Sing Off, season 3, the best and longest season, by far. Thank you for taking the time and effort. I especially loved your comment on Scott's relationship to the group.

    • @margretrosenberg420
      @margretrosenberg420 Год назад

      @@persishamilton4866 EVERY time Pentatonix, um, twisted the lead singer rule, the judges praised them for it (which is one of the ways we know the judges hadn't been let in on the plan). EVERY SINGLE TIME. But Pentatonix was the only group pushing back - they knew it was directed against them, and specifically against Mitch, and getting proper recognition for Mitch was one of the reasons they were there. The other groups just knew it was a rule so they followed it, and their performances suffered as a result.
      If Scott weren't intelligent enough to figure out for himself that picking the most appropriate person as lead in a particular song is best for everyone (and he most certainly IS that smart - everyone in Pentatonix is incredibly intelligent) their experience on _The Sing-Off_ would have been enough to teach him.
      As for Pentatonix being a family, the trio have been best friends since forever, obviously, but all five of them spend huge amounts of time together and I don't think they're capable of having anyone in the group who is a mere business associate. If the singers don't have what they need to thrive the music can't thrive. And what the singers need to thrive is the care of a family, so that's exactly what they all get. And we feel that love in their music; I think it's the most important factor in their success.

    Sorry, but Matt is not beat boxing. He is laying down the bass line. All the beat boxing is Kevin and Kevin alone. Now, like Avi did, he probably adds a little bass at times on the kick drum Kevin does. So you first hear the snap of the collision, then you get the deep tone. Makes it sound so real. The fast sections he does are his tom runs. And it is Kirstie, like thirsty. If you go back and watch their cover of Niki Minaj's 'Star Ships'. She takes Niki's little rap toward the end and tells you 'My name is Kirstin, but you can call me Kirstie.' It has been said that she dislikes her name being mispronounced. So think Kirstie Alley if nothing else. Good reaction. Subbed and going to see what else you have reacted to of theirs.

    FYI: Matt never does any beatboxing. Matt is singing Bass notes the entire time. Unless he takes the lead sometimes, he always sings bass. Period. No beatboxing. He’s like the bass guitar in a band. Sometimes he singing rhythmic notes, but they are still notes, not beatboxing. Listen for the low notes, they are always there.
    Kevin rarely sings anything, cause it’s hard to sing and do beatboxing at the same time, unless it’s done while closing the nasal pharynx to allow mouth sounds to continue. He sometimes gets a solo bit or sometimes sings, but when he does he has a high voice.
    Matt and Kevin have 2 very different jobs in the group! But together they are amazing! 😊

      Favourite and most popular are two different concepts. The first is subjective and dependent on the person, while the other is more factual in nature. In 2023 so far PTX has 1) been nominated for their 4th Grammy 2) received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (the first a capella group to ever do so) 3) are on the Masked Singer as California Roll(we all know it's them -Scott's voice is unmistakable 4) on a world tour that will take them until the end of September and 5) will begin filming a Christmas film where they are part of the main cast - I'd say that PTX has most popular a capella group all locked up, no contest and it's not even close.
