I believe that Scott carries a lot more on his shoulders than people realize.
He really is phenomenal.
The character in the musical who sings this song has social anxiety and feels ignored and invisible. The meaning behind the song conveys the fact he feels like just an observer of life when he wants to be a participant and feel like he matters. You got there as you listened to the lyrics. 😀
This is a great cover, but Ben Platt singing this in character - he sang it at the 2017 Tony’s - is very emotional and powerful. Check it out.

This is from the Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen. Ben Platt played the lead role and won a Tony. His version of this song is more character-driven, but this PTX version is fantastic!
Scott took a fabulous lead in this one!! Like you said though, it's the fabulous complexity and intricacies of their arrangements together with their truly incredible voices and vocal talents that set PTX apart - they truly are The best! Thanks for another awesome PTX reaction!

It's a very powerful song and is a part of the opening sequence of the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen (which has just released the theatrical version to theaters) It's a captivating number and sets a very strong and emotional pace for what's to come in the rest of the play.
My interpretation of it was the character felt like an outcast and a loner with very few, if any friends. The act of tap tap tapping on the glass I believe was a metaphor for tapping and scrolling through your phone constantly looking for a human connection as most phone screens contain some grade of glass in them nowadays. So "is anybody waving back at me?" Feels like is anyone going to add him as a friend on social media and actively engage in the relationship he longs for. If no one is waving back, does anyone even realize he exist?

Yeah you never know what your gonna get when this group sits down and makes an arrangement but you know it's going to be powerful.
I have heard them do this one before. Absolutely love the meaning behind the song. I have felt that way my whole life. Scott is such an amazing singer that it doesn't surprise me that he is usually the lead. You can feel the emotions behind every word he sings. Thank you for reacting to this one. Ben actually covered 'Can't Sleep Love' in 2016. PTX covered 'Waving....' in 2019.

I’m looking forward to see the movie, musical based. It features great actors. Wish I could have seen the musical though. I love the concept. “Tap-tap-taping on the glass, I’m waving through a window” refers also to taping on the cell phone glass to connect with others, being a spectator trying to reach out and also (possibly) false identity... very actual. Another great PTX cover. Another great reaction. 🤗

Scott hates labels in general but he is the Engine of the group. He met Ben (the 6th unofficial member) his first year at USC and talked Scott into entering the NBC show "the Sing-off" so he went back home to his 2 best friend and entered. Then he found out that the minimum number for the contest was 5. Ben knew Avi and Scott found Kevin through a RUclips video posted with him playing the Cello while Beatboxing and knew Kevin had to be part of the group. Kevin was hesitant as he is Very Religious and didn't think he could devote himself to a band. Kevin had graduated from Yale University and was on his way to pre-med. Scott covered half the cost to fly Kevin to Los Angeles.
They all eventually agree to every arrangement or they simply don't do that song. Scott helped build Mitch's confidence and Kirstin has really blossomed since she did "Kinky Boots" on Broadway. The original three grew up together in Arlington,Texas USA and because they are friends Scott and Ben have arrangements that best suit each individual. This doesn't mean anything against Avi, Kevin and Matt, it's just that PTX turned 10 years in June but the original three have been singing together for 20 years.
Recommend their Seasons Of Love (televised version) from Rent, Exit Signs, It’s Different Now, and I Just Called To Say I Love You.

You became right on with the lyrics. Saw Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway. Cried through the whole second act. The story and music hit me in the feels.
Just for perspective, you should really listen to Ben Platt's Tony Award performance of this song... it is heart wrenching. Just a totally different experience.
I am glad you point out that PTX is indeed about the complexity of layers. Scott does take a lot of leads, but part of that is Mitch and Kirsti do such an amazing job of blending seamlessly sometimes it is hard to pick out who is hitting each note. That skill is integral to their sound. Often the lead and the rhythm section catch a lot of attention, but i often get lost in the fullness of the supporting vocals built into supporting and empowering whomever is in the lead at any given time. The mix of subtlety and strength is so verr
y important.

Songs are most often written for baritones. Scott is a baritone so he will lead most of the time. It’s that simple.

Someone said there was a BTS for this but I couldn't find it. I've never seen Dear Evan Hansen but I know they are in school. I think the outfits PTX is wearing probably correlates to the characters of the show.
