An interesting note about Mario Party 3: In the board where they explain the rules, Tumble talks briefly about hidden blocks. He says that you can get coins, a star, or items. To demonstrate, Mario gets one of each type of block, and the item Mario gets is a Mushroom, even though it appears to be impossible to get one in normal gameplay.
imagine going through a 50 turn game and on the very last turn a miracle happens and you roll a hidden block pushing you to 1st place. Only for wario to win by being awarded all three bonus stars.
There are few crueler things than having several horrible turns in a row in DS but then getting a hidden block that turns out to be a Ztar, putting you even further behind.
I am dumbfounded by the fact that I have never, in all of my years of playing Mario Party DS, managed to find a Block Sensor in an Item Shop. I'd always thought it was exclusive to the Grab Bag,
1. Fancy seing you here. 2. Same here. I always played the maximum amount of turns just so I could buy a Grab Bag in the Shop and recieve the elusive Block Sensor. 3. And because I am me and therefore have awful luck, most of the time I got it it resultet in a nice, refreshing Ztar. Totally worth it.
Those Block Sensors were always a fun item to use in DS(assuming you don't get a Ztar). I think the next rare oddity should be this: What happens if you were to land on a Bowser Space when every player has 0 Stars _and_ 0 coins?
I swear there's a rare oddity in Mario Party 5's Card Party mode. When you flip a Star Card showing a Star, sometimes the Star will turn out to be fake, turning into a Ztar, with a special animation to it as well (the star shatters, revealing the Ztar). Has anyone else encountered this? last time I experienced this was like over 10 years ago (or my mind could just be remembering it wrong). EDIT: So I checked the comments of the last Rare Oddities video, and to my surprise, other people have experienced this! Please do a video on this!
@@lunexbot8437 apparently a lot of people, given sentiment on random parts of the Internet with nostalgia for them. It also specifies that those game-changer items only appear in high turn count games

About Ztars in the Mario Party series, in Mario Party 6, they're called "Shadow Stars" while in Mario Party 7, they're called "Dark Stars" (or in PAL version, "Z Stars"). In all other installments in the series (if Mario Party 2 on VC for Wii, Mario Party 2 on VC for Wii U, and Mario Party DS on VC for Wii U is counted), all other games which have Ztars are just called "Ztars". You pronounce it with a normal "Z" sound (the "Z" in "Ztar"). But it's not easy to pronounce. By the way, I did hear it mentioned in this video (a Ztar).
You should look into the Bowser events from Mario Partys 2 & 3. There's a rare moment where if the wheel lands on "100 star present" or "10,000 coin reward", Bowser runs away.
I'd like to see a video on which Mario Parties have random or pre-determined dice rolls. I know 1 & DS are pre-determined, while 2 & 3 appear to be random based on my own testing.

Hey, Mario Party Legacy. I thought of another Rare Oddities video you could look into. You know how when there's 5 turns left they show the standings of who's in first through fourth in the first several Mario Party games? What would happen if everyone was tied for first? What would happen and what dialogue would be different then? Who would get the last place benefits in Mario Parties 4 on up when there's a tie for last? Random? Port priority?
In Mario Party DS, the game actually gives you two subtle hints to indicate whether or not the hidden block contains coins or a star (or ztar), those being: when the block appears, and when the camera zooms in. I once had a game of Mario Party 3 in which all four players hit a hidden block in the same turn - two items and two coin blocks. Knowing now that there are three blocks on the board instead of just one, it doesn't seem quite as unlikely, but I'd still estimate the odds at about 1 in 50000. Put another way, I doubt I'll ever see such a turn for several years to come.
Hey MPL, so I’ve been loving this series so far! If you come back to it in the near future, I have an idea for your next Rare Oddities: Every Instance if getting a Ztar. And I mean for EVERY instance! Mostly because I wanna see footage of all the Star/Ztar cards/fake-outs in Card Party for Mario Party 5! Don’t forget, not only can Stars/Ztars become the other, but it can fake you out as well! Only times I can think of Ztars appearing outside of the main Party Mode is in 4 where it hosts the Beach Volley Minigame in the Extras Menu.
Okay, so there are two oddities that I can think of for Mario Party... 1. LOSING in a coin minigame. I've only seen this once in Mario Party 7 when playing the minigame "Coin-tagious." Waluigi was getting 0 coins every time he hit the dice block, which made him get 0 coins. As a result, Waluigi's lose animation was shown, implying that he lost the minigame. 2. Triggering certain turn-based events (aside from items and orb spots) on the last turn. I had this happen to be when I got a Cursed Mushroom on the very last turn from a Koopa Kid, where he showed frustration towards the idea.
0:48 That's a bold statement, there. But great video, it was very interesting! Although I always wondered if, for the coin hidden block in MPDS, it was better to mash or to time your jumps at the end of the animation. I'm glad you still find cool ideas for this series! I think a video on whether or not Mario Party 9 dices are rigged on your placement would be cool but might not be what this series is really about but I'm looking forward for the next episode either way!
All my friends complain about me always winning Mario Party, so one time we decided to play with the video cables removed to even things out. I got three hidden block stars in a row.
@@spongefan155 The N64 had composite cables (red/white/yellow) to connect to your TV. Only plugging in the red and white cables plays the game audio while only displaying a black screen. You can still hear Wario's "YEAH, I GOT IT" every time you land on that lucky space.
I could imagine Mario Party Board World (one of my Mario Party imaginations, the other being Mario Party Koopaling Journey) having three capsules that have the hidden block mechanic: 1. The regular coin block capsule: cost: 5 coins; the number of coins in the block: ranges from 5 coins to 15 coins. 2. The timed coin block capsule: cost: 2 coins for every second you want to set the timer for (up to 5 seconds); the number of coins you gain is the number of times you hit the block before the timer hits zero. 3. The star block capsule: cost: 40 coins; triggers a roulette with a few stars, ranging from 1 to 3.
For the capsules, however, instead of capsule machines, I wish there were capsule huts with the corresponding inhabitants, sitting on a chair or stool with a box of capsules in front of them. The characters (chosen from the character selection) have to wear bandanas around their necks to use as blindfolds and pick up a capsule without looking.
Playable characters: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Wario, Waluigi, Rosalina, and Pauline. I'm imagining that all nine of these characters in the character selection are going to wear bandanas around their necks.
4. I recently started thinking about the ztar block capsule: cost: 20 coins, even though it triggers a huge, negative effect on yourself. Let's you "earn" a ztar, which actually let's you lose a star.
What's funny is that when I played Mario Party 4 for the first time, I played on the "Toad's Midway Madness" board and during the first turn, I had only rolled a 1, found a hidden block and immediately got a star! Best thing ever!
I think it would be interesting if Hidden Blocks appeared in Mario Party 6 and 7, and they would function like they did in Mario Party 3 (3 Hidden Blocks on Blue Spaces, 1 contains a Star, 1 contains 20 Coins, and 1 contains a random Capsule/Orb the player can use).
One memory I vividly remember from MP2 is landing on a hidden block, resetting, and then landing on the same space without one. Is it possible that the game(s) reroll positions when loading a saved game (not counting SMP as you demonstrated)?
Would it be possible to get an analysis on Mario Party 3-4 item Bags. I have always wondered how random the items you receive from them actually are, and are they worth it.
Dude when you played the Mario Party DS hidden block clips, I was hit with such a wave of nostalgia, I can't describe it. That was the first game I got for my DS. I have yet to play a better Mario Party game than it. The N64 games (and Superstars) come close, but DS has em beat.
I always thought the "hidden talents" bit of Luigi's description in the Mario Party 2 manual was referring to his AI having a higher chance to encounter hidden blocks, but some brief research suggests that particular phrasing was never actually part of his character description.
Am I the only one who reads game manuals? I’m seeing people saying they’ve never seen the Block Sensor in DS, when the manual tells you the item exists. Though, I guess the manual doesn’t tell you it’s specific to the last five turns…
If the black star returned in super Mario party I'd see your character groaning while the others laugh at you. If it was the first time one showed up a conversation occurs with toad calling Kamek out about it
An idea for a Rare Oddities on Super Mario Party: what are the probabilities of getting at least nine stars (if possible, 12) in the Tantalizing Tower Toys map (Kamek’s map) using a double the star received cards when here’s three stars (so around the last 4 turns) and being able to make the two players land on the star space on the same turn?
I'd like to see a video on what happens when Bowser's roulette lands on the 100 star present or the 10,000 coin present when you land on a Bowser space. I know he just runs away, but it would be nice to see his responses and animations.
Whomp's ruins has 58 spaces on the map. One of those spaces is always a star. If it is the 4th turn, and I go last, that means that (assuming the best odds for this situation) this will be the 12th unique space landed on. Since no hidden blocks had been found, I had a 2/45 chance to find a lucky block. I find a hidden block. Next turn, I find another hidden block for a 2/54. Next turn I found ANOTHER hidden block! Another 2/54! If you do some math, that's an 8/131,220 chance! BTW I got this yesterday. Came to the video looking for answers, and thank you for telling me I should start gambling. With that luck, it's the same as finding two combees and one is shiny female. There's no way to prove what happened, and I don't need the internet's approval, I'm just in shock
I've always wondered how hidden blocks worked though I swear the hidden blocks in Super Mario Party move during each character's turn as someone moved and didn't get a block then I moved onto the same space and got the block.
Here is a rare oddity for you, getting Bowser to run away in Mario Party 3, it's a simple oddity, basically you get one of the special bonus in bowser's roulette wheel that is good for the play, like the 10,000 coin jackpot. Another oddity you can talk about is the failed "?" events in Mario Party 3 where you land on the space, but nothing happens.
I was replaying Mario Party 4’s story mode and on Goomba’s Greedy Gala, AI Yoshi roll 2 1s in a row and both times he got stars on hidden blocks. I don’t blame you guys if you don’t believe. Oh, also when it came my turn to roll, I used my Boo’s Crystal Ball to steal his star.
I grew up with Mario party DS, and never learned what the Block Sensor did. Every time I saw it I was like "Ehh, why do I need a radar when there's a Star pipe?"
In the first Mario Party, the Hidden Block CAN appear on Red Spaces, too. It also appears to have the same odds as getting Koopa, Boo, and Bowser as if it was on a Blue Space. If you have no coins or stars and get Bowser, he will give you a single coin...as opposed to like 10+ coins when that happens on a Bowser Space. I think he trades a star for coins if you have no coins but a star on the Hidden Block, like with the Bowser Space, but I'm not sure. In addition, if you have No Koopa and/or No Boo options on, these characters will also NOT appear in the Hidden Block, so you would get Bowser every time in this situation.
So did I. I only knew the music of the ztar when you got one. But actually seeing one when I was kid. Good God it made my heart pounding and all I could think was what the...how what the heck just happened?!
Can you show me/us in Mario Party 1 what happens on the event spaces that always says "Nothing happend"? I refuse to believe that never anything would happen there. It must happen something at some point with some certain condition. I never got to see what is actually happening there.
I learned this from King of Skill, but in Mario Party Superstars, blue spaces with hidden blocks make a different sound when landed on. With that knowledge in mind, one time on my 1v3 Mario Party in Horror Land, the enemy (i.e. Wario, Waluigi, and/or Birdo) took a hidden block two spaces from the red space (which is two spaces from the start). Using that knowledge, and restarting over and over, I used a custom dice, rolled the exact number to land on that space, and it took me a few attempts to get that star from the hidden block!
There is actually 6 MP DS blocks. There are 2 different types of Coin Block. 1 which is like the one you showed in the video and another the same as the one when you land on a Coin Block Hex (has more time).
I could've sworn that I played a game of Mario Party DS just a few weeks ago in which I landed on a Blue Space without a Hidden Block and then the next turn someone else landed on the same Blue Space and did get a Hidden Block. Though according to this video that shouldn't be possible. Huh. Must've misremembered it.
I've still been trying to think more rare oddities that could be covered yet only other one coming to mind is the moment in Mario Party 2 when Baby bowser gives you 5 coins instead of taking 5 coins.
I'm disappointed the Hidden Blocks in Mario Party 1 weren't covered. One of the things I wanted to be covered in Rare Oddities was the chance of getting ANY of the special dice blocks at the start (or in the Hidden Block's case, end) of the turn.
In Mario Party 1, For the Bowser Space roulette events, what’s the probability of landing on a yellow event (100 Star Present, 1000 Coin Present, and Star Steal)? They seem much more common in Mario Party 2 and 3, but I have never seen it happen in 1. I asked a chat and one person who played the game a lot claims they say only saw it once.
I once recently played MP2 with some friends. One of my friends went “Heattos playing Peach they’ll get a hidden block first turn”. “Don’t day that.” I got a hidden block first turn, it was a star, I said: “I don’t want to play anymore” and I ragequit
I'm fairly certain it's been mentioned at least once, but there are also hidden blocks in Mario Party 1. Those blocks are random and provide you with either Koopa (20 coins I think), Bowser (Bowser event starts), and Boo (a regular Boo visit). Just thought I'd mention it in case it wasn't already :)
An interesting note about Mario Party 3: In the board where they explain the rules, Tumble talks briefly about hidden blocks. He says that you can get coins, a star, or items.
6:26 Warp Block is just like Item Box.
8:19 funny thing is, i have never found a luck censer in the item shop ever
13:38 What name is for this board for Mario Party Deck Shop that has a cementery gate with meeting a space rocket?
This board is named Bowser(kowser). "s pinball educator.
One memory I vividly remember from MP2 is landing on a hidden block, resetting, and then landing on the same space without one. Is it possible that the game(s) reroll positions when loading a saved game (not counting SMP as you demonstrated)?
Hmmm, I didn't test what happens when you save and quit and return. Would have been nice to give that a try.
Would it be possible to get an analysis on Mario Party 3-4 item Bags. I have always wondered how random the items you receive from them actually are, and are they worth it.
Seeing a hidden block doesn't feel right until you hear Emile and Masae screaming "WHAT?!"
SonicSceptileWarrior SO TRUE! 😂
Or seeing ProtonJon getting the Ztar after Emile just stole one from him and hearing him screaming "FUCK YOU! FUCK YOU! THATS NOT FAIR!!!"
Whoever though putting Ztars in hidden blocks is truly evil
Ikr
My request remains Bowser's unique dialogue for each character in DK's Treetop Temple (in MP8).
For some reason, if I use the block sensor in Mario Party DS, it always leads to a ztar. I always thought it was a scam item
"The game is Trolling you, Jon!"
Dude when you played the Mario Party DS hidden block clips, I was hit with such a wave of nostalgia, I can't describe it. That was the first game I got for my DS.
I have yet to play a better Mario Party game than it. The N64 games (and Superstars) come close, but DS has em beat.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to struggle to pronounce "Ztar", I've just resorted to calling them "Z-Stars" after a while
I call then “zee-tars”
How I prounounce it is ztar. Zat-star like sad star. Because ztars are made of sadness and gloom.
He should have kept this series going
If the black star returned in super Mario party I'd see your character groaning while the others laugh at you. If it was the first time one showed up a conversation occurs with toad calling Kamek out about it
That one time when you get a ztar and throw the game out the window
The sounds of getting a block in Mario Party 4 sure brings back memories, especially that particular spot in Shy Guy's Jungle Jam.
8:20 I've never seen a stand-alone Block Sensor in a shop and I maxed out the 99999 score cap twice.
"Since Mario party 3 is the best.."
HAHAA!! EVEN THIS GUY GETS IT! MP3 IS TOO AWESOME
Could you please do a vid on the rarity of every item you can find inside an item bag in MP3 and 4?
An idea for a Rare Oddities on Super Mario Party: what are the probabilities of getting at least nine stars (if possible, 12) in the Tantalizing Tower Toys map (Kamek’s map) using a double the star received cards when here’s three stars (so around the last 4 turns) and being able to make the two players land on the star space on the same turn?
“This is a cool series! I can’t wait for more episodes!”
2 years later
Finally another rare oddities video
I'd like to see a video on what happens when Bowser's roulette lands on the 100 star present or the 10,000 coin present when you land on a Bowser space. I know he just runs away, but it would be nice to see his responses and animations.
Expanding beyond just Mario Party in this series would be REALLY cool!
That was very informative, thanks for the video!
Apparently, turning off bonus stars in Mario Party Superstars doesnt affect hidden blocks at all and they'll appear regardless
3:47 Jesus Waluigi.
I freaked out the first time I got a Ztar in MPDS
So did I. I only knew the music of the ztar when you got one. But actually seeing one when I was kid. Good God it made my heart pounding and all I could think was what the...how what the heck just happened?!
Yesssss, MP3 is the best no question. This is a surprisingly uncommon take I’ve found.
Do you know the odds of getting a particular item from an item bag in MP3?
How about Doing a Chronology on all ? Space and all their effects for the next Rare Oddities?
That’s cool, a rare oddity video on something that was designed to be a rare oddity!
There is actually 6 MP DS blocks. There are 2 different types of Coin Block. 1 which is like the one you showed in the video and another the same as the one when you land on a Coin Block Hex (has more time).
Could you tell us more about Bowser's roulette in games like Mario Party 9, particularly the roulette with prizes like "Get 999 coins?"
Great video, keep it up!
DS is my favorite Mario Party :)
Great video! Do use more than one background music next time
I could've sworn that I played a game of Mario Party DS just a few weeks ago in which I landed on a Blue Space without a Hidden Block and then the next turn someone else landed on the same Blue Space and did get a Hidden Block. Though according to this video that shouldn't be possible. Huh. Must've misremembered it.
I've still been trying to think more rare oddities that could be covered yet only other one coming to mind is the moment in Mario Party 2 when Baby bowser gives you 5 coins instead of taking 5 coins.
Oh, so that’s where Ztars from from Paper Mario Madter Quest came from
Can you do a Rare Oddities episode for Big Boo who appears on the boards Horror Land in MP2 and Boo's Haunted Bash in MP4.
Waluigi doesn't need that from the thumbnail, he should've got into Smash instead!
I'm disappointed the Hidden Blocks in Mario Party 1 weren't covered.
One of the things I wanted to be covered in Rare Oddities was the chance of getting ANY of the special dice blocks at the start (or in the Hidden Block's case, end) of the turn.
They were covered... Just not in order, because he said it doesn't really count.
Yeah, I briefly mentioned them later in the video but they work a bit too differently from the rest for my tastes.
That’s fair enough
I think TCNick and ProtonJon can explain the immense Love-Hate relationship of Hidden Blocks in Mario Party
I love hidden blocks except when the ztar makes it appearance and one of them I got 25 coins out of it and the block sensor item is awesome
