Malachite was the fusion of one of the best soldiers homeworld has seen and a gem that can literally control the whole Ocean, that probably explains her size and power
Besides her desing represent how unstable are Lapis and Jasper
I don’t see where somone can even start to criticize gem fusion when gems ingeneral already work on absolutly crazy logic
Like the fact that they can shape shift into forms bigger then themselves? And the only thing keeping them from holding those forms is just, the base proportion’s of thire forms holding them back
Cause the Ruby ship episode showed us that their forms start to freak out during faster then light travel, and so whatever mechanics are manipulating thire forms keeps them in those forms, one of which was literally the proportions of a diamond.
The only base rule of fusion in regards to proportions is that a fusion should, or will always be bigger then the gems combining to create it, at the vary LEAST
Malachite is literally made from a colonizer and a super strong soilder that was probably the reason all the other jaspers were deformed 🥴💀
And both of them have giant egos, for trauma reasons
Alexandrite is green and magenta because the real life gemstone turns green in cool light and magenta in warm light :') your design is super pretty though, just wanted to mention why her original palette was the way it was

Tbh i was hoping that she'd go for crab like instead of spider since crab is somewhat similar to a bug and it is also nod to lapis's water element as well as a nod to jasper's color and temper.. cuz she is a straight up mad crabby sometimes and does not play well.

I mean, when you think about it, alexandrite IS made up of the most persistant members of the crystal gems that simply refused to die, despite the monstrous amount of odds agains them, even as a jab at the character it could make meaningful sense if you really think about it
Much like roach’s alexandrite is also the most visualy unnerving fusion despite malachite and the forced fusions, never felt like she was suppose to be pretty, I just thought she was just to look vary clearly like an alien monster star worrier from the 80s, literaly the LAST thing you would exspect to show up at a dinner party, and the LAST thing you would want to show up in a high stakes battle

Your redesign for Fluorite makes her look like a kind, old granny and I LOVE IT!
The reason that malachite is a mega fusion, even though she’s only two gems is because not because she’s toxic, but that is a factor, but because it is a terraforming gem, and a combat gem, which are very powerful gems in their own states, so putting them together would only create more havoc. It’s like earth meets water, it makes a Florida hurricane

my favorite detail of malachite is that malachite is a gem with a high copper content which makes it release toxic fumes when put in contact with water. the writer's were cooking for that one. also your redesign EATS
A note for Florite, her body had 6 equal sized orbs, marking her 6 gems being balanced throughout. Yours has 8 segments with a prominent 'upper half'.
Makes me think Florite accepted a Fusion into her collective and it upgraded her look.
10:28 In defense of her color palette, I think that they were trying to follow the colors that an Alexandrite stone can turn depending on how the light hits it. It's one of the reasons why it's my favorite. 🕷

What makes the OG Malachite stand out is that with the fusion being so toxic, you can effectively see how it’s just a mishmash of the two body types (Lapis as the upper body, Jasper from the next down as the lower half). While I defs love the direction you made with the spider theme, I would’ve preferred if you kept the bulkiness of Jasper for the lower half, potentially more like a thick tarantula than a skinny spider.
As for the hands being more spider-like, I’d recommend looking at bat wings since they’re effectively human hands but warped. Keep up the great work!!! 🕷️🕷️🕷️🕷️🕷️
🐛 did fluorite SO MUCH justice, the butterfly/moth inspo is so so SMARTTTTT I love that you keep motifs and the character’s personality so prominent in their designs, as someone that likes to design characters for my own stories your videos mean a lot to me, there’s a lot I learn from your videos

5:31 🐛 I think three of the gems are peridots on her chest and head, the circle gem on her chest might be a blue pearl due to the color scheme, the circle gem on her head could be a Ruby, a Sapphire, or an Amethyst and my best guess as to what the diamond shaped gem stone is probably a jasper or emerald bc that’s the only gems I know who have diamond shaped besides the diamonds themselves
I was waiting for someone to talk about the topic. No hate to writers but rose/pink diamond being the same gem ruined the pseudoscience of the cartoon, you can’t base it off shape bc she goes from side profile of the gem to just the top facing…. Plus peridot never fused.. and as a Leo it crushes me to my core. Especially peridot and garnet fusion 😢

@@giraffeslovecoffee7597let’s be fair though, pink was a diamond, and wile it’s a stretch to make this assumption I do think it’s fair to assume that only a diamond could ether A: pull this off B: dare to pull this off or C: need to pull this off
What other gem is going to benefit from this little trick? Smooth gems gain nothing, Quartz gems, which are shown to have mirrored facets across both faces of the gem don’t gain anything beyond just looking goofy (not to mention it seems the gems are really good at telling what you are, even if they can’t see your gem based off of your form
There is also the fact that gems can’t just hold their shape shifted forms like diamonds can, and I doubt they would be built with the capability of freely being able to reform as a totally different gem, especially since every other facet of a gem seems maticulusly designed and well controlled beyond their emotions and minds and cross fusions (especially since that last one is more like an exploit, and is thus unpredictable)
To me the pink/ rose reveal is clever, and mind blowing because once you know, it seems so obvious that only a diamond could have pulled something like that off
If rose Quartz was just a normal rose Quartz, she and the crystal gems would have been knocked out a long time ago, that’s why the situation was so baffling in the first place, if rose was just some random other gem, the reveal wouldn’t really have been that segnifigent
It would have been cool sure, but another gem would have to jump through loads more hoops for that trick to be meaningful
I doubt a cross fusion would get any good use out of it because their existence alone is already a taboo

As much as I like the redesigns, its probably best to have the reference gemstone as the color palette. I know you're trying to get elements from the fusion participants but then you lose what makes them look like said gem in the first place, particularly Alexandrite. Real life alexandrite is teal under cold light but turns purple red when exposed to warm light, and whilst the og design does use purple magenta, its still accurate to the real gem. The lime green doesn't work and makes it more bloodstone or watermelon tourmaline.

As much as I love your Alexandrite design, the colors don't read as an alexandrite anymore. Alexandrites color shift from blueish green in the daylight to a pinkish purple in incandescent light. So her colors in the show were pretty accurate. There are some that are more on the green/yellow side. But the majority are blue/purple. Sorry for being nitpicky!

⭐️ the separate faces also help to show how they’re not perfectly in sync. With fusions they’re meant to be their own character, in a way, that’s a mix between the fused gems. They’re not just ‘what if we put together Saphire and ruby’
OMG AWW, Fluorinate looks a Grandma that makes baked nectar sweets for the other gems which I made as a headcanon for this redesign, I love it so much, just giving off the sweet vibes. 😔✨💖✨

i’m gonna go to bat for alexandrite’s color palette since it’s based on the actual gemstone. alexandrite the actual gemstone is super unique where it changes colors depending on what kind of light hits it. it’s red-magenta in incandescent light and it’s emerald green in the sunlight. it’s so cool and one of the rarest minerals.
The alexandrite design looks so epic and the malachite design is truly ferocious, creepy and awesome

5:30 fluorite's gems are unknown so all we can really do is look at the shape of the gems and compare them to our existing knowledge of what different gems look like and it looks like she is made of 3 peridots, a sapphire, a pearl and an obelisk which i believe is the same type of gem as the spinning temple from S1 E8 - "serious steven"
I love the designs! Especially 🐛! My one critique is that they aren't close to the actual gem stone color. My one suggestion would be to have a picture stone to pull colors from.

Idk if anyone has said this yet, but I just wanted to note that usually the size of a fusion has something to do with how compatible or in this case, stable, the two gems are together, like for example:
garnet is a fusion of ruby and sapphire, she’s a pretty average height, whereas sugalite (fusion of garnet and amethyst ) is quite large.
Pearl mentions something about both garnet and amethyst’s personalities being too much for each other (or something along those lines) and it’s safe to say that this would also be the case with jasper and lapis (hence why malachite is also one of the larger fusions).
Anyway, to summarise for anyone who doesn’t want to read all that rambling: a gems fusion depends on the gems compatibility with each other, the more toxic the relationship between the two gems the bigger the fusion seems to be.

Okay but all of these are AMAZING….I love the heroine vibe you introduced to Alexandrite, as the tragi-comedy mask that her shoulder plates are giving is SO good…I think that even shows a bit of Sardonyx, and that was something I liked about some fusions of several gems-when you could see other fusions in them. And with Sardonyx being a TV personality (or at least a performer with your design of her!), having a little Theater element is Alexandrite is (chefs kiss).
That being said-WOW Malachite is incredible. So unsettling and perfect!! I really love what you did with her hair, and the spider motif is kind of perfect for the way Lapis and Jasper were trapped in Malachite, like how a spider traps its prey in a web and wraps them up…
But I gotta pick: ⭐️
