    for it's time the M1 Garand had the best sights in the world, but that was in 1928, a red dot sight wasn't even a glint in the milkman's eye back then

    • @armedpartisan
      @armedpartisan 6 лет назад +10

      NedYarbNexus, exactly. I have often stated that the major innovation of the M1 Garand as far as military efficacy wasn't the fact that it was semi-automatic (the Soviets also had a semi-automatic infantry rifle at the start of WWII, and built around 5 million of them by war's end, but nobody claims that they won the war because of the SVT 38/40), but rather the cutting edge sight system. Contrary to most nations at the time, the US handed it's troops a complex rifle with advanced sights, trained, and trusted them to use them, and to great effect. To this day, American troops (especially we Marines) have a reputation for exceptional marksmanship that is in no small part borne of the M1's superior, instantly adjustable sights.
      Consider how most militaries in that conflict barely taught their troops marksmanship, and many forbade troops from adjusting their sights in the field, letalone on the fly. The French, for example, didn't even have a means of adjusting their MAS 36 sights for windage in the field; the entire rear sight must be changed by an armorer to alter the windage, and the trigger pull feels like it was designed to prevent the rifle from being fired with any kind of patient deliberation.

    I love this video. Everyone talks about bastardizing an American classic like the M1 Garand, but in my opinion, it's actually an honor to a great warhorse to update it for modern use and to potentially be a battlefield weapon again if it were pressed into service. The M1 Garand was made to fight, what better honor than to keep it updated to be able to fight in the 21st century?

    • @abuhajaar2533

      while the m1 garand is capable of fighting, a bolt action is as well by the same argument. In a real battle though I would ideally choose the modernized version of the garand though just because it is magazine fed. (m14 or m1a)

I've owned a Hopco mount since around December of 2014 and stress shoot M1's in much the same way you do, if only half as often. In fact after discovering your channel many moons ago I've frequently used your documentation as a benchmark for my own skill and personal techniques, to which, if I had to compare, I would say im no where near as proficient. Keep up the great work and know there is someone who holds your work and skill in awe.

  • @boosuedon

    This is exactly what I need! I trained on the M14 in 1968 at Parris Island, SC. We all had to shoot iron sights out to 500 yards in order to qualify and graduate a Marine.
    Well, I''m 70 years old now and my eyes are not what they were at 18 years old. Now, unless it is a very sunny day it is very difficult for me to line up the target with the front blade and rear aperture. I'm thinking that if I set up a "battle zero" at 200 yards with this red dot, then I should be able to use "Hold Over" for 50 yards to 350 yards.
    Anyway, I ordered one of these and we'll see if I just wasted some dollars.

    • @doughesson
      @doughesson 2 года назад

      How much does each click on the red dot that you use move the point of impact?
      Didn't the Marines learn you how to calculate clicks to MOA adjustments?

    • @boosuedon
      @boosuedon 2 года назад +3

      When you are engaging multiple targets at multiple distances you want to establish a "battle zero" which could be different for each shooter. I prefer the 200 yard mark as my battle zero, then, using the hash marks it is pretty easy to just your fire without having to mess with your scope or whatever site you are using. If using iron sites and your rifle is zeroed at 200 yards but your target is at 300 yards just aim at the head and you should be able to hit the target center mass. I don't know about the 5.56 round but this is effective for a 7.62, 150 grain ball round.

    I hope you read this and reply back. First off let me start by saying I bought an Springfield M1A Tanker earlier this year and at a very great price. I've fallen in love with this rifle. It is well balanced and the recoil is not arm jarring. I'm 59 yo USAF vet so over the years I've losing my farsighted vision and it's hard at times to center the front site. I like the set up you have and looks very reliable. I love the way the Tanker is set up as well as most M1As especially the stripper clip mount on the top, but I noticed in your video that you loaded a stripper clip from the top. So I'm assuming your set up still allows for the stripper clip mount without jeopardizing the optics and mount? I've not looked to see if you have any links for your set up, if not could you reply back with a link. Also I noticed this vid is 7 yrs old. Are your optics and mounts still in working order? And is there a quick disconnect by now that you could change optics if necessary? And would you use a larger optic other than the mini? I'm just getting the feel of my M1A and I want it to shoot true without compromising the beauty and integrity of such a grin rifle. Thanks for taking the time to read as well as answer, I hope.
    Thanks and God bless

    I'm considering this mount in combination w/ the Leupold DPP for my 7.62/308 'Tanker' (18") M1, which is a pretty tight shooter with just the irons. I've watched your Garand-related videos, and they're great! Hope you do more of them, maybe including putting your M1 thru 'tactical drills,' with moving & shooting & reloading clips on the fly. I've run a couple of my Garands in 3-Gun Matches (Hvy Metal Div), and it was huge fun. Took one of my .308 M1s along to a tactical carbine course one time. Let's just say the old M1 attracts A LOT of attention from younger guys who are used to only seeing tricked-out ARs. LOL. Thanks!

      True for the stated parameters. But keep the tool and the original rear sight with the rifle and your problem is solved. Switching out is about a 10 min process. Less if your careful and practice. I keep a couple extra batteries and the rear sight in the butt compartment of the m1a. I imagine my solution doesn’t fit the need quite like shtf folks prefer, just pointing out that the change out is likely worth the reliability risk. I’d rather shoot faster until I’m out of batteries in 3-4 years. It’d be pretty unlikely to break that rmr glass. If your beating the rifle hard enough to break an rmr, you may well need to rezero anyway, iron sights or no.

    Put two custom layers of 100mph tape on the mount where brass strike occur and move on or ask a talented M1 mechanic if you can tune it so that doesn't happen. I think I will be owning the club but I would like to see a mount the has a cowitnessed aperture in the bottom of this sight. Even if it was not real adjustable, we could use holdoffs. Now, which M1 will get the nod? Depending upon the mount, maybe the parts will fit in the stock.

    Bought one of these a year ago for my M1a scout. After a few rounds of tinkering and zeroing, with a Burris fastfire 3, this is a very accurate and reliable aiming setup. I highly recommend this product, and I wish I had heard about it sooner. I ended up removing the front sight and the scout scope mount, then changing the top hand guard to an original style. I didn't really notice a difference in weight, but handling was greatly improved. Especially from that scout scope rail which is a poor design choice. Pretty sweet option for the Garand. As far as the M1A goes...an Ultimak rail on a Scout Squad with a Vortex Sparc 2 or the Trijicon micro can not be beat. Lower 3d cowitness. Fast accurate fire out to 300 yds with the red dots, and full use of the superb irons out to the 763x51s max efect range. IMHO the 2moa dot of the Vortex Sparc 2 is perfect fit for these rifles.

    Purchased based on this review. Burris Fastfire. Works great. I have a leather riser to help with cheek weld. Outstanding sight picture. I have a TRS-25 on an ultiMAK rail on another Garand. Sight picture and target acquisition are not as good, but dot is closer to bore and cheek weld is great on standard stock. Plan to upgrade TRS to Holosun.

    Yeah I know I'm 3 years late... BUT, the XS scout rail is IMO, superior to this. It mounts the optic forward of the action (better for red dots) and allows both more options of optic AND allows the iron sights to remain in place. Have you tried the XS scout rail?

      I had an Ultimak rail on my other M1A.

      @cm2973 2 года назад +1

    • @doughesson

      @@cm2973 You were talking about touching the optic & I was talking about the Ultimak rail being hotter than hell because it clamps directly to the barrel.
      Not only that but the aforementioned mounting clamps affect the barrel vibrations which screws with the accuracy.

    Not to raise up an olde' Moldy video....But this mount precludes the ability to go back to iron sights if this red dot fails somewhat going against your "rule of redundancy. Does your opinion still stand on this set up in respect to what is available now 2023 ? Say using the 4th Gen Springfield Armory M1A Mount instead ?

    Nice video. I had my Garand at the range today, shooting 200yrds. I was shooting up some Bill Clinton Ammo. I didn't expect much. In my head I came to the conclusion, With my old eyes, 200yrds is about it for being able to hit a man size target. I did put NM sights on this old war horse. Is 300yrds doable for Antifa man sized targets with that red dot? They do tend to run on the small size, but conversely they glow white, from living in their Mom's basement.

      Milkman3572000 does ANTIFA employ men now? I'm sure that they'd die of fright if they heard a supersonic pop wiz past them, and realized what it was, so I am sure that is plenty accurate.

    I'm thinking that the marks on the on the red dot are caused by the ejection of the strip clip, and not the brass case. If it were the brass then I would not be able to mount a scope on my M1A because the ejection would just beat the crap out of it. But this is not the case. Although there are some brass strikes in the center of the scope tube just above the ejection port there are none on the scope above the strip clip feeder. NONE!
