Easily the best Isekai I've ever seen. I also wish more shows would imitate the way it skips the typical anime opening and instead uses that time for montages and scenery shots to setup the episode.
The essentially only good Isekay I've found so far is Now and then, here and there (Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku von MAL). The exposition is that an (originally) unbearable Happy-go-lucky boy follows a mysterious sad girl getting abducted and gets thrown into a post-apocalyptic wasteland where his nature and outlook plain and simply doesn't fit in. Which is made abundantly clear to him within the first couple of episodes. He is still only a 10-year old boy with no additional ability subject to forces greater than him. Similar to Re:Zero he technically isn't even the protagonist of the story. A LOT of dark shit happens and happens fast - or is alluded to - and is treated rather mature, not only by anime standards. All that is presented without forcing in a Harem, a Power fantasy, or me to show sympathy for borderline paedophilia. I'm still going to give Mushoko a try - the pained slow growth of the character described in the video might be a redeeming factor to everything I've read about it so far.
@@damianpadayachee5111 Both parts of Re:Zero season two have certainly been fantastic and I'd definitely put it in my Top 5 Isekai (up there with Mushoku, Konosuba, Shield Hero, and probably some other heavy hitter I'm forgetting). Whilst I really enjoyed the first season, I had to ignore some writing issues as well as my hatred for the protagonist. However season two Subaru is a much more likable character and the writing is really quite gripping this time around. I can't wait to see where Season 3 goes if they make it.

Truck-kun has become so ubiquitous I've seen it used as a gag in a totally different genre. I was reading a Dude-beats-up-Yakuza-goons comic and he straight up kicks a guy into traffic _because_ he saw Truck-kun coming. "Hey, better make sure he's good and dead so he can get his Isekai." Mushoku Tensei is NOT ART, You Philistines. Its one of the Worst Manga I've ever seen, so i stopped reading. Aka i quit. With 1000 others, i did not quit. The MC makes me cringe all the time, let alone his Father.
@@loturzelrestaurant i find it interesting that the people who hates mushoku tensei have the same reason, but that same reason is why others like mushoku tensei. Not sure till when you stopped so uhh spoiler warning i guess I find paul to be a very interesting character, a father who cheated on his wife, slapped his son and isn't good at teaching his son sword styles. And yet, he still tries to be a good father. After the metastasis event, when his entire family was gone except norn, he still carried on to protect norn. Think of it like this, if everyone you care about were to disappear except 1, would you either give up completely or try protect that last person while trying to find the others. And when we met him again, he was disappointed rudy didn't meet his expectations. He set the expectations too high, like a lot of parents do. We can clearly see him in a state of despair, yet he still tries. The fact that he decided to reconcile with rudeus is also another thing, the amount of fear for being hated by his son after that argument must've been tearing him apart emotionally. This is not a series about epic fight scenes and perfect heroes, this is about a family trying to keep themselves together no matter the struggle. I'm almost at the end and the amount of times where it's about friends and family is everywhere, Grandma Claire, Zanoba and his brother, cliff and his own family, nanahoshi and her attempts to get back to her own family and of course rudeus's family. So many characters are so well written I'm amazed.all of them have different problems and insecurities. Claire wanting to help her daughter even if she has to do something illegal, Pax trying to make the world notice his efforts but no matter how hard he tries, he is never acknowledge. He was even given an end that was suited for his character, no matter how hard he tries, almost no one acknowledge his hard work, even after becoming king he was not acknowledge. Where else can he go other than death.
HAH! Y'all don't realize how much CGI this anime use, it's mind boggling. the ones being fully hand-animated is probably only 20-30% of things you saw on screen But the use of it is in a very good way. Like, very, very good way.
But seriously, every single episode feels like a fantasy film. One of the few Isekai where our journey actually FEELS like an adventure. I understand if you cannot look past this show's controversial elements, but if you can, it's undoubtedly a delight.
Because you actually get to experience it. Most shows show a bit of childhood, then jump into legal adulthood (15 in most cases) and then just jump from even to event. Mushoku Tensei not only gives us much more very early years stuff, but also does its time skips very well. We never feel like we miss anything.
It's also a series that utilizes extensive CGI and things like AI-based rotoscoping in order to create things like Roxy's staff Pretty much every horse and carriage Pretty much every spell and all the parts of said spell Buildings, backgrounds, people in said backgrounds(If they're blurry there's a strong chance they're a CGI asset), and a ton of other things.

@@loturzelrestaurant I’m gonna to tell you this as calmly as I can but the fact that you clearly rebutted the video without even watching it is already quite infuriating. 1) The MC’s farther is disgusting and the characters are not denying that fact, with Rudeus at one point scolded his farther and his family having a big argument that time he had an affair. 2) Mushoku Tensei is hardly considered worse than other isekai because its success is in fact what all the isekai that followed tried to replicate. Which is why Mushoku Tensei is often considered the Original Isekai. 3) Due to reason number 2, Mushoku Tensei is one of the least cringe-able isekai, if you are different from many people and still find it cringy, that’s fine, but it’s a lot less cringy than other isekai that tried to copy its tropes but leave out the characterization. In the end, I do acknowledge that the cringe can take a lot out of the experience and you just have an unpopular taste. But please don’t lash out on the people who love this show, they have justifiable reasons, reasons mentioned in this video.
One of my "favorite" moments in the show was after Lillia got pregnant, because I genuinely did not expect a show like Mushoku Tensei, an isekai ecchi with a scumbag protagonist, to touch such a sensitive and uncomfortable subject matter, and the weight that this show conveyed in *just* the family sitting around the table put the entire show into perspective for me.
as a person who read the LN i can tell u that there arent insanly much moments like that BUT when they come holy molly they hit devestating and never without reason
@@baneofthebread He does get away quite easy but he's really regret his mistake after that. He wouldn't get away so easily if Rudeus didn't help him because Rudeus don't want the family to be broken. He also got punished after that quite a long time and that was like his natural habit when he was younger (don't know what the manga said but Lilia has a line that said she's the one who want to do shits with him, not so sure if that was the case so I just gonna leave this here) so I think it's decent if he got away with that for the sake of the family But also, hey. He created both best 2 waifus in the world. Aisha and Norn (If you don't know, Aisha is Lilia's daughter and Norn is Zenith's). I give him credit for that. If he didn't do abcxyz with Lilia then we wouldn't have Aisha and I personally would be so sad. She's a goddess sister who always love and care for her brother, loyal to him, smart, beautiful and cute (all those good personality and other stuff happens in the later stage of the story). What can we ask for? I personally can't so yeah. I would give him that. At the end, although he's dumb and a pervert, he's still a good father who always ready to sacrifice for his family (happens later on in the story)
My favorite thing about Mushoku Tensei is the psychological element that is very present in the light novel. He constantly comes in contact with problems from his old life, and tries to grow from them. He’s always a horny bastard, but his growth comes from his unwillingness to repeat his past mistakes. I can’t say spoilers for the anime or manga crew, but his relationship with his father is a great example of this growth.
I'm currently waiting for vol 10 of the LN to come out and as long as the anime keeps going like it is this is definitely gonna be a series that gets remembered for a long time
@@InsaneNinja117 the WN are a great choice if you just can’t wait. His thought process and choices are very mature especially when he’s making decisions that impact his life and the lives of the people around him. His relationship with his father is just beautifully done and when the arc was over I was genuinely heartbroken. It was bittersweet and I do t think it could of been written any other way. "They try. Or they try to try." Fuck man, that hit deep. Having a father who was, in a lot of ways, a bad, irresponsible person who nevertheless did what probably was his best for me, this tiny bit of an anime critique nearly had me in tears. I don't speak to my dad anymore. I wonder sometimes if I should.
Most people want to want what is best for themselves and others, and find that wanting to want something is not actually the same as wanting it. This is what I call the "wierdness factor" at the heart of humanity. We know what we should be doing and how we should behave. But, we find ourselves despite that knowledge and desire acting in all sorts of ways that we don't want, and find ourselves as a consequence in all sorts of trouble that we were asking for, and deserve, and even knew we were going to get - but didn't really want.
If you think you can get through it without scarring yourself too much (again), I'd advise you to try it - if the attempt fails you've at least tried it and won't live in regret for how well it might have gone. I would however try to set a couple of boundaries beforehand: You talk as peers and that you can have a long talk about what you (both) think went wrong, so as to clean the slate of what you expected and what he intended. It's a damn difficult thing to do, but if you have any idea of how to get your intention across to your dad it might go well or at least okay-ish insofar that you can overcome your resentment.
@@celebrim1 Its mostly due to trauma's and terrible habits/obsessions passed from your parents/guardians, whether you were close to them or not, you normalize the bad things they do and unconsciously find it normal or even acceptable to exist in that same way. We're always changing as our own persons, but we can't completely erase that exposure and neglect our parents put us through, and they couldn't erase their own either.
I mean, you say he tried no matter his shortcomings. I believe that's worth at least going to see him. Trust me, do it. To add onto the quality of animation rant at 9 minutes, as another creator said, Mushoku Tensei puts out the level of artwork and design that you'd expect from anime movie productions, and maintains that level of animation throughout an entire season.
So much of it is the dynamic camera, it's one thing to make buetifull, movie quality art, it's another to draw it consistently from so many different angles

He's a really, really well written character and even though I dispised him at the start, halfway through the season I found myself rooting for him to improve, to make the right choices, to succeed and grow with that success, and to grow and learn when he fails too. Getting me to root for the growth of someone like Rudy(especially how he was in his first life) is phenomenal writing, and I can say with confidence now that I love the character.
One interesting thing about how this series is playing its tropes about reincarnation straight is that Rudeus is still coming terms with the realization that wondering who is the “real” himself is losing any meaning over time. The line is blurring even in his own mind. He’s not pretending or playing some abstract game. He DID actually reincarnate and lived a new life from birth to late infancy (now approaching adolescence). He actually made a new family and he’s actually growing friendly and then intimate with these new girls in his life over years together. At this point his true identity is just as much the one of a former hikikomori as it is one of a hard working prepubescent kid with a good talent for magic.
Mild spoiler here. When he met a person who is actually transported and not reincarnated there are clear differences between them. He is invested to his new world and dont want to come back anymore while the other is still attached to earth and wants to come home. He is effectively part of the new world.

I was really pleasantly surprised when Rudy called out his dad for scolding him without rudy telling the whole story. That Paul took this random moms account over his own son's account. It might be because Rudy is actually a man in his 30s mentally but him actually getting pissed instead of taking Paul's 'parenting' was so good to watch! Having Rudy pull the "i guess when i see someone getting bullied ill leave them alone or maybe ill jump in" was so good in that moment. Because that part of the argument was what got Paul out of his ass. I also like how Rudy noticed how the maid would not be able to survive on her own with her baby so he tries to sway his mom to let her stay and instead have all of her anger at Paul. I also love how they frame the clearly problematic scenes for how they are. problematic and the frame it so you feel uncomfortable which I can argue is better than trying to write it off as haha anime tropes.
That scene kinda actually pissed me off. Due to how smug he decided to be with it. Basically loser-chan here was really just taking out all of his own pent up aggression from his own family, that very rightfully gave him shit. And now he's rolling that shit down hill. Cool. I'm so glad we got a perfect scene of this child(who I think is mentally older than his father), "owning" this guy who, is not perfect, who has not lived through multiple lives, that was trying to be a parent, which is still more than our hero has ever done with his life. Let's also not forget that Rudy very much, wants to fuck his sister, AND does later if I'm not mistaken! Before she was even born he wanted her in his "harem", so him trying to keep the maid around could have been very much motivated by that too. I was so sick of every chapter being a long form explanation of why I should want to suck the MC's cock. God this was trash.

With episode 1 having Rudy's parents moaning in the background while he's reading, and then him walking in on Roxy uh... Watching... And doing... Something. A lot of people just find it uncomfortable, unsettling, gross, unnecessary etc.
It's a uncomfortable story with the parents doing the deed. However, Rudy's actions is necessary to the story. The author wanted you to be uncomfortable with rudy as he wants to take in most eyes "unlikable/creepy character" to a characters with depth, realism and overall grown to become a good person/character. So with those reasons I think he did great job. The story starts with a piece of shit character. After turning point 2 you'll start to see rudy make deliberate steps into changing and actual slowly stop being creepy and if we get season 3 we get a stable picture of how big the world is, drama, war and where rudy falls into this chaos. I get most people hesitate because we start with a unique character as he's completely unlikable at the start but there's a lot of reason people love the journey of Rudy. I swear you wouldn't see as much LN and WN readers stan this if there's not interest in it. Since its a long story there's slow starts to certain things so I implore to give it a chance until we make it to turning point 3 or 4.
Even in medieval times, while it was *more* acceptable, the evidence we have says that those sorts of things were generally viewed with disgust by the overwhelming majority of the population. The nobility was really the only place where it was semi-regularly practiced, as a means of securing political power -- marriage/sex at young ages in the Middle Age peasantry was very rarely documented and usually considered highly objectionable. It wasn't as common as people often think it was, because it *was* still incredibly messed up, even back then.
Not really, simply because the lifespan for peasants around that time is really low, average around 30 years old. This is due to wars and conflict between Nobles and other countries. When you have young male often got craft and die in war, you will have lots of women left behind with few young male around. This is why it is often encourage to have sex earlier in life so they can leave offspring to keep theirs family name and tradition. Not to mention in many periods where it is encourage for young male to lots of sex with lots of women to repopulate. Furthermore, if you haven't read Bible story, Mary was 14 years old to marry Joseph which 44 years old, the 30 years old different.
@@chinaforcedorganharvest-me7062 No, it's not because of wars. These were not societies in which most commoners would be involved in war. The primary cause of the low average lifespan in those is child mortality. When like 30% of children don't make it to the age of 5 that's going to draw averages way down. If you lived past that you were generally fairly likely to make it to 60 and had decent odds of 80. We have ample evidence that commoners generally did not marry until after they had accomplished a reasonable degree of financial security, so they could provide for a family. That generally happened in the early to mid twenties. There were exceptions to this rule, of course; but in general the nobility married younger and with greater age differences than the common folk.
Even back the kids aren't present at the wedding and they aren't expected to do anything. For one it's more about the family wealth/soldiers so it's more adults discussing money and political matter. Nobody is expecting a kid to actually do adult things do you know how common death from childbirth is, especially if the mother is too young. There is also no birth control.

It's less "vulgarity" and more _visceral_ to me. With a lot of anime, even if they're edgy, there's a feeling of fantasy to it that made it feel unreal. I myself can see bits of myself in Rudeus even if I'm nowhere near as bad, but that real, vivid, _visceral_ emotional honesty just make me take a good look at myself. It's what grabbed me from the first chapter of the WN and what made me binge the entire WN in less than a week forgoing sleep for two nights in that week, two years ago. I already said years ago that I could see the show will get an anime, but I have to say, the quality of the adaptation surprises me who knows that the early chapters was rough, so I am relieved that people can get what was the point of Mushoku Tensei even this early on.

@@poalex2352 it's the journey of a pervert I wouldn't disagree, but they don't reward him for any of his action mother's basement litterally talks about how he assaults eris and then directly after gets his ass kicked to then self reflect, this world isn't letting him get anyway with any of his stupid actions they directly show punishment for every wrong action he makes did you even watch the show? Also please fix your grammar I can barely tell what you're saying
5:12 - 5:32 This may be the most ruthless 20 seconds on this channel. As someone who blindly watches most isekai just because, I feel like Mother's Basement just punched me in the nuts with a powerfist
A morally dubious character is not the same as a dubiously written character. His antics isn't a reflection of the story or show, its just a reflection of his character. Thank God theres actually character development in this show. It makes a character with rotten flaws growth more refreshing. You can't get growth from a perfect character.
This is what people aren't getting here. They aren't capable of separating fiction from reality, they are judging Rudeus like he is a real person and stop at that level. Of course, if I found myself in front of an actual adult man reincarnated in a kid touching his cousin (which, anyway, it's literal fucking fantasy, how can you even take it at face value) I would of course be disgusted and probably would consider him trash and stop there. But this isn't the case, Rudeus isn't a real person, he is a fictional character. A fictional character of which we know the thoughts, we know his complete background and his life. We are supposed to look at his character arc, not at him at his lowest. We are supposed to look beyond his behaviour at think about why he acts like that, considering both his psychology and what narrative value his actions have. Similarly, Rudeus is a guy whose entire life was full of rejection, lack of empathy and, of course, also his own failures and regret. He was a 30yo something fatass NEET because nobody helped him, not even himself. He wasn't just a pedo, he was a person with a story that lead him to that lowest point. A person who was also ready to sacrifice himself for other people who had more value in his eyes. People are so fucking stupid that can't even see when things are literally in front of their face
@@Hyperversum3 Yeah you can say all of that but he still married the girl that he groomed. Also if people want to stop because they are disgusted by his actions then that is their rights, they aint stupid for that.
@@vibez2806 The second point is true, but it makes It a completely subjective opinion and not a critical analysis. Your taste isn't critical analysis. Deal with It. And the "grooming" is an exaggeration. He THINKS about it that terms, but what does he actually do? He acts like a freaking kid that beat up her bullies, teached her magic and then skiddadle away for years which resulted in her growing up on her own. The thing is that MT actually points it out strange for an adult-in-child body to have an actual kid as friend... But then Rudeus doesn't actually do anything creepy with her beyond taking off her clothing when thinking he was dealing with a male. Grooming is another thing entirely and you morons abusing words like this is what lead other people to not care about certain topics.
@@Hyperversum3 you mean just like your taste but the difference is that I ain't calling people stupid for it. Also it ain't about taste being a critical analysis but the fact that his actions are disgusting, you even agreed. The fact that he builts just a close emotional relationship and says "I am gonna make her into the perfect wife" and then marries her is grooming. He had 6 months knowing her as a girl. The fact that his father sent him away cause he realize how overly attached and dependent she was on him should tell you something It can say that it is weird but it does nothing to actually show it. I mean it let them get married. He was the one that took her virginity. Nah grooming fits perfectly. She was overly attached and emotionally dependent to him. When he found out that she was a girl, one of the first things he thought was "I am gonna make her into a perfect wife"..... Again think about how creepy that is, at this point he is mentally 40 and he actually made good on what he said.
This show is everything I’ve wanted to see in an otaku gets a redo story. A comprehensive look into how prior life knowledge would mold a person from being a baby forward. It’s an honest look at trying to do better while still reliving the past trauma that created the otaku in the first place. Edit...I in no way excuse the behavior or think that it is right, I simply think it’s a more realistic take, as a person as clearly flawed as this man was,now suddenly being reborn but with memory intact, is very definitely gonna be still just as flawed.
His supposed trauma that made him the way he is does not forgive him for his actions. He is still a perverted loser who didn't get bullied enough in school. Part of school is socialization, and bullying is a part of that feedback you should learn from, and he never learned. This video gave him a pass as he's supposedly learning, but he's not in a situation to learn. The video also touches on his treatment of women, but the world they live in is different from our own. Historically, men were in positions of power over women because men in our world are stronger than women. The situation of our modern world of equality is because of social choices. In the world of Mushoku Tensei, that's not the case as we know Rudeus' mom was a magician and adventurer with his dad, Ghislaine is incredibly strong, and Eris is a much better fighter than Rudeus. Because women aren't weaker than men like in our world, the situations don't take a serious look at the treatment of women but wraps right back around to being fan service. The story isn't art, and is hardly better than any other trashy isekai. I'm not trashing on the show, I don't mind trashy isekai, but it can't be called art. The animation however is the best I've seen in a while, and could easily be called art.
People are gonna get angry, you should probably edit and say (while also taking a close look at and unraveling the harm they impose on others) or something similar so they know what you actually mean
@@user-cr6gd5td9p School is just teaching the very basics of socialization, you learn to work with strangers, to reject fuckers and pass over their bullshit and how to procede with superiors. But after you get out of high school, rules change and you get into a world where there are no written moral rules or guide to find out what you need to do. It's why some great students (both in grades and social) fall down into ruin when they get out of school, for these people living like a neet or in dipshit is more easier than living normally just because it's simpler. Well just saying that the end of high school is a big deal for a lot of people, changing their lives for better or worse freely of your history, but well you're right about Rudeus being dumb sometimes.
Well I don't think that he never learned. The guy learned more than he needed to. The protag was not always a NEET .I don't know what your life is like but I have seen bullies in real life. I have seen some shocking stuff in manga that I hope never happens in real life. The things this guy had to deal with is the stuff of nightmares. Lifelong therapy was apparently not something he got in return so I totally understand why he shut down. It's easy to say pick yourself up and start walking to someone you do not know it's totally different to reach out to them and show them how. Not a single person reached out to this guy. It's not an excuse it's me pointing out that things happen to people that can change there entire view of life. Abusers grow up with abuse right? You gotta learn it someplace. In the mind of the protagonist he needed a hero and no one came to save him so he rejected the world in return. I'm no saint. I know lots of hypocritical humans who internally think they are saints yet have done things that are far worse than the stuff the protagonist has done post respawn. I'm happy to see this guys path to redemption.
Lilia wasn't forced to keep it a secret, Rudeus is grateful for that which is why he helped when she got pregnant. Lilia was so touched by his help and went being scared by him to becoming his biggest supporter. Also she wasn't that scared, things like being leered at, she was already used to. She was more unnerved about the fact was that it came from a baby. Slypie was grossed out by him at one point but still chose to reconcil with him. Eris, despite having molested in her sleep, settled it with only a punch. Edit: Its hinted in the LN that Hilda, the mother, was the one to set up Rudeus and Eris that night. Not the father as mentioned. Roxy knew Rudeus stole her panty but did not confront him and demand it back. If its not clear enough, Rudeus's pervesion is treated as very commom thing. Most of the time, his lineage is what thought to be the reason for it. The story isn't about him overcoming his perversions, it is him learning from previous life and striving to be good son, brother, lover and friend. In that sense, he has already grown, but he himself doesn't think so. He still feels that he is still the same old scumbag. When he sees his old self during the meeting with Hitogami, he gets aggravated believing that it proves that he has not grown.
I agree. The sentiment in the video and some people in the comments seems to be "scumbags be scumbags" but I've learned that this is really about living a better life despite the past. I interpret Rudeus and the past man to be 2 entities in a single form. The mid-30s man has knowledge, philosophy, kinks, and trauma that exert an influence on Rudy however, what Rudy does should be seen with potential to be either celebrated or reprimanded according to his current depiction. Take the depiction of sex and consent in the current anime run between Rudeus and Eris. Mother's Basement paints it as pure "content warning" but our carnal desires can be overwhelming esp when we're young and there was positive development and growth. Also, I've read some of the story background (I'm anime only but I like knowing things ahead) that Eris is actually depicted as a sexual aggressor (When Eris left Rudeus after their first time together, she left her panties and stole a pair of Rudeus' underwear... and so on) and a physical abuser in the current anime. Lastly, Mother's Basement calls Paul a rapist but the story states that she succumbed to temptation and seduced him (Rudeus made up a rape allegation to save Lilia's face) which I have to reiterate the challenge we all have to face when it comes to our carnal desires. This show shows a lot about mindsets, traditions, morals, and attitudes in different people, societies, and cultures in different time periods and these change and evolve over time so please view it in an objective lens and not in a purely emotional-irrational one because it can be blinding. A huge part of the judgement the characters receive is really in people's attitudes and beliefs on the tropes and stereotypes shown but you have to take things holistically and without bias and prejudice to understand and appreciate things.
@@r.vincenta.9678 Spoiler warning but Eris is definitely the more sexually-aggressive between her and Rudeus, to the point that Rudy refers to her as his husband rather than his wife.
@@ApexGale I will never forget the ch I read of him fighting one of the most powerful beings in the world the sheer desperation as he fought tooth and nail even when his gas tank was empty. Begging to spare them and when he is denied that compromise he drags out that last bit of spite to meaningless attack but it just held so much intent. It gave me chills and brought me to tears to see his character evolution crystalize then and there. That was the moment where I cemented this as one of my all time favorite series. The characters are so human. Perfectly imperfect.
@@NwinDii the parallels between rudeus and the character you're referring to are really good. that character has been fighting alone for what has amounted to what, centuries? and by opening up and finally relying on others he gets farther than he has ever managed before the family and friend portions of MT are without a doubt the highlights. seeing how much he cares about his family and his friends and how he achieves more by working together with them is the real enjoyable part of MT. i wish the author had toned down the whole perverted thing because sometimes he kind of ruins the tone he sets with that.
Mushoku Tensei is self-aware enough for me to give the more messed up elements a pass. Like, it knows exactly how messed up the situations are, but doesn't try to dress them up. Better to have something transgressive that at least gets a pass in terms of presentation rather than something transgressive that lacks the same degree of self awareness and just comes off as cringe as a result (looking at you, Redo of Healer)
The thing is, “presentation” is exactly what’s wrong with it, though. I don’t get why most Mushoku Tensei fans get the impression that people have a problem with the content being there, than how it’s presented to the audience. It’s a really weak attempt at grasping for justifications. No, people’s problem mostly stems from how the anime portrayed those scenes as a joke and made Rudeus out to be some sort of creep, which I can definetly understand could put some people off. It’s jarring for some issues to be handled with care, while others are treated as if this was a shitty harem comedy. Those scenes are the opposite of self-awareness. If they were, they’d be condemning it, not endorsing it in a “hilarious” light.
That one is Obviously Revenge Porn: A La Mode We just have to accept there’s the writers that use... THAT STUFF (mostly verbs) for ratings or its analogue (clicks/views/SimpBucks) and those that try to make a point or deliver a message... unfortunately both sides have 50/50 chance to fail, SOMEHOW
The thing I hate about it is that the main character doesn’t get punished for his action. If the author was trying to portray that what he did was bad then why didn’t he get punish, he almost got praised a couple of times from acting creepy
@@obeliskm743 THANK YOU, Its really difficult to knock this into their heads! The show does *not* do a good job at presenting it. If you can laugh at the scene or directly after it, its a poor presentation.
@@obeliskm743 tbh, that's a problem in Japanese overall. That by no mean's excuses it, but it can at the very least explain it and given how ubiquitous it all is, that explanation goes a long way Even so, like I said, an explanation doesn't make an excuse and it's something that needs to be addressed both in the art form and the surrounding community.
Gotta like the fact that this anime Respects every episode's time limit it has to work with and cuts down on "wasted time" by not doing a recap, not making the first two minutes of every episode essentially the same as the last 2 minutes of the last episode with minor alterations, and even doing away with a traditional OP by filling that time with either beautifully done establishing shots and/or meaningful plot developments, often times both.
Ghislaine’s like the amazing big sister who wants to make sure her younger siblings are taken care of and is an all-around good girl. She’s the type of person who has learned from her past (unlike, say, Paul) and wants to impart onto Rudy and especially Eris the wisdom she didn’t learn until later in her life, like the importance of knowledge for example.
The sexual parts of the early story makes me deeply uncomfortable and that is clearly the point, but I do not blame anyone who drops the show due to it. I adore it despite this and in a way due to it, and to anyone who doesn't feel the same way, I get it.
I in general enjoyed the WN, but I do wish there was a bit less smutty stuff in it. By that I do not mean the actual descriptions of his love life, but the misc crap that really does not add to the story.
I respect that you're at least mature enough to understand why some people may have issue with it. There are too many people who get unnecessarily hostile whenever a show's sexual content is criticized.
Expect that the show clearly dosnt care that those actions are morally wrong and never punishes anyone for it in a long run. Even at the end of a story.

When you get offended by something, even if your first instinct is to ignore and disagree, it's probably better to ask yourself why that thing offended you. Instantly hating something based on instinct worked really well 10,000 years ago to keep you alive, but it's a regressive instinct: a provocative argument isn't going to kill you.
As a person who is already 15+ web novels deep into this series after seeing the first episode. I don't think I needed this video. But I liked it anyway.
You can enjoy something and still recognize it's trash. You can not like something and recognize it's not trash. You can also grimace at something and pretend it only exists when you're talking about the trauma it caused you in therapy. Mushoku Tensei is probably all of these things, somehow.
@rick mel First up, you're overgeneralizing things (quite likely on purpose to get outrage, but I honestly don't care). Second, while it definitely has some uncomfortable subject matters, that doesn't automatically make it trash. It may not be your type of show, and it may be too much for you, but that doesn't make it media that needs to be cleansed from the world as a whole. Third, what does this show need to be defended from? Again, just because it has subject matter that's controversial doesn't mean it should be deleted.
In reality a good story is good loveable character, good character growth and tense emotion at times. Never a dull moments. Mushoku hit all those points. At some point the theme became about family. This is why I like this series. It just so happened this series is very cultured. Too cultured

I feel that more often than not this happens to rudeus showing us raw how growing up mentally and physically can be

Eris is hands down the best tsundere character I have seen for the past 10 years... I would say "best tsundere ever" but Eri from school rumble exists. I have given this, much thought and the only reason I can come up with is that Eris is a "tsundere" but only at the surface level... What does this mean? Well she is "tsundere" only through her voice and mannerisms. But the rest of her character isn't a tsundere. Tsunderes are usually hateful on the outside but loving on the inside... never openly admitting to liking anything or anyone really, but on the inside or when alone actually adores said thing or person. But Eris isn't that... Eris will openly admit that the thing she likes is amazing (eg Rudeus)... Eris will openly admit that maybe we can get married or something... just give it 5 years. While a true tsundere character would openly say Rudeus sucks then run off to the next room and blush while inwardly gushing. Eris is like diet coke... It claims to be coke... it feels, sounds and looks like coke... But when you taste it, it isnt coke. Thats Eris... just in a good way.
My definition of tsundere has always hinged on emotional honesty. A true tsundere will always react in opposition to their true feelings about things they like. Eris is more of the old-school / ancient tsundere when the term was for a character that was originally terse or aggressive and grew nice or "sweet" over time rather than the now accepted form of sort of having both sides mashed in together.
@@soerd13 Eris is an insane violent person, prominent enough to be known by the Dragon God himself. Rudeus is just twigged enough to be misunderstood by an insane violent person as crazier and hungrier for power on a scale that even daunts her. And Rudeus doing his best to meet, accommodate, and accept her despite being unwilling to see him as the coward he sees himself as is some of the best storyline Mushoku Tensei has.
I think the whole idea of Rudy's character is a battle between his growing sense of morality coupled with his previous life twisting him to corruption. The whole start of the show was a display that Rudy isn't a terrible person, he just thinks the people in the world are terrible and acts accordingly. On top of this, he's an outright pervert, but again this is because of his lack of social exposure due to his outlook on life/the world. A lot of what has been happening in the show is showing him that the world isnt as evil as he thinks, and he's beginning to change how he thinks because of this. You can kinda see that in recent episodes; when he acts abhorrently towards Eris - when they're "alone together", he gets told 'no' and he realized what he did was wrong. Basically this show is a really weird/perverted way of telling the story of a character who has undergone psychological trauma at a societal/social level, and it's honestly really well executed. I enjoy all of the characters for their weird over the top quirks in their personalities, but it gives the show a bit of flavor beyond the standard isekai trope. 100% underappreciated gold.
I agree 100%, a lot of people in these comments say they really dont like him cus of this, but imo that turns him to be way more believeable, cus if anyone else was in the same position, for the post part they would do the same, if they had a life as shitty as his in only 30 years

Just as the forewarning of a Novel Reader, Rudy is not a hero he never tries to be, he knows that he was (is) a trash of a human being, all of his effort is just so he can become a decent human being, he recognizes that he was blessed with a chance nobody would ever get and tries to live a life worthy of having been lived, nor was he brought to this otherworld intentionally, he just happened to be in the right place at the wrong time and the story goes to great lengths to make it clear that he is a pebble, an influential and hard working pebble, but a pebble none the less, in a very vast sea of forces beyond his ability to control, but just perhaps, if he works hard enough at it, not beyond his ability to navigate.
What blows my mind in this anime is not so much the story, but the composition of scenes, music, background and animation. The anime has only adapted 2 volumes out of 25. It just recently started adapting the 3rd one in an arc that took from vol 3 to 6 to write, and at the end of that Rudeus is still a teenager. It isn't until the end of the next arc (Vol. 7 to 13) that Rudeus is an actual adult with full adult resposabilities (all of them) and it's from vol 13 and forward that he actually understand the weight of his adulthood, so it's complitely understandable that the author won't just end his character development at the end of volume 2. Rudeus has a lot of problems he needs to deal with, just as all the other characters, but those problems can not be resolved in just a day. He may have the mind of a 32 years old hikikomori, but he IS a child in this other world, he has lived too little compared to other people in the world he inhabits and he needs to get there to actualy grow.

As someone who read the webnovel to completion way back when it was still ongoing, I can't even begin to say how accurate your statement is that the story is about family.
And its especially good in acknowledging sometimes family hurts you and sometimes you fuck up when they needed you and the fact they treat it like real issues that need time to sort out rather than having it only take like 10 minutes start to finish is one of their masterstrokes
As someone who worked in mental health, its alarming that there is absolutely no tolerance for Rudeus's perverse actions. Let me explain, his perversion is a developed behavior that misaligned for society and even become harmful to others and himself. We can all agree on that but there is a lot of animosity from viewers to this series and I mean a lot so I want to turn attention away from Rudy to you guys, the viewers. What I am seeing is that some people will not change their views about the previous actions of Rudy no matter how much he may redeem, or try to redeem at the anime's current point in time. No matter what redemption and/or growth from Rudy's previous behaviors to get better, its not enough. I have seen similar views about those in the criminal and prison population where some people believe the absolute worst should be forever stay in prison population regardless of their level of conviction and their lawfully sanctioned retribution to society. Basically, once a criminal, always a criminal or, in Rudy's case, once a pervert scumbag, always a pervert scumbag. This is going to undoubtedly make a lot of people mad and lead to huge disagreement, please forgive Rudeus. Now while I say that, I am not asking for a free pass to let him do anything he wants from now on, but recognize Rudy is not the same person he was before and does not necessarily need to be treated that way. However, he should be reprimanded if and when he strays back into such previous behavior but not necessarily with the worst response.
It doesn't show the actions of Rudy's consequences. All of the people who have read and really like this story are confusing rudeus becoming a better person with rudeus being confronted with his issues. He doe's become a better person and it takes time, but not because of consequences. @Zangyaku Diluc the show is clear on its message that it's not supporting rape or sexual assault, I don't have to be 100% comfortable with the way they choose to direct/depict sexual assault to understand the show isn't trying to condone it stop getting your panties in a twist dipshit
I like the show. But I'm not going to lie the main character seeing young girls and women as sexual objects instead of people makes me very uncomfortable. I don't disagree with your points at all. But I do want to add my perspective as a woman: There are a lot of anime that have a scene where a dude does something sexually inappropriate to a woman and it's played as a joke where the punchline is the dude getting assualted. This happens a LOT in the Mushoku Tensei anime as well. And while some viewers will say, "yeah good beat his ass", other viewers will chuckle at the concept of female anger and say "lol those crazy women" I don't think Mushoku Tensei has done enough yet to tell the audience that molesting a child isn't a funny haha joke. Sexually assaulting a child is not a funny haha joke. I feel like it turns the concept of consent into, "if she doesn't assualt you it's okay lol". Because there are more than some victims of sexual assualt who won't get mad, they will freeze and get scared. Would the protag of Mushoku Tensei stop if he started to sexually assault a girl who didn't stop him because she was too scared to? I don't think he would at this point in the show. And the viewers who see him getting beat up for molesting girls and laugh, Idk if they would either.
100% this also that she instantly forgives him for that. Many Victims distance themselves as much as possible from their assaulter(obv.) or gain Trauma from such an experience(such as that they can't get touched by a man without having a Panic attack or something like that). That Anime shows not really anything from this side and plays it more for laughs
@@turtlelini506 While I can see your point, I dont think that they add that into the anime, because you do have to take the setting of this world into consideration . I do think that they shouldn't have played it off as a joke though, because it ruins the atmosphere and the impact of the lesson that rudeus learns and is, as you said, simply not appropriate, given the circumstances. Heck, it would have been really good from a director's perspective if they did that, as the contrast to scenes like that from before would draw a very clear line between what they think is morally acceptable and it would have further enhanced the rudeus's reflecting from a viewer's standpoint Maybe they could have done it like in Redo of healer and add a warning before the episode Very mild spoilers ( to explain what I meant by setting of this world)? They are in a kingdom that approves polygamy, where it is normal to do these deeds. They have different morals and values compared to our world, which means they have a completely different mindset, a completely different way of thinking and looking at such things. As such, they wouldn't react like we do.
@@turtlelini506 the moral codes of society are different in differents times.we cannot project our own modern moral codes onto a medival fantasy setting.but you do have to consider that eris kind of likes him and has made a promise with him.
Although I'm a guy I total agree with your point. That said, this is entertainment, not education. There's a TONE of stuff out there that are way worse. If we complain about all of them we would literally beome China. In my opinion, it is the viewer's responsibility to not follow the actions of fictional characters.
Didn't pick this one up at first for some reason, but I'm glad I eventually did. Rudeus has some of the most satisfying character progression ever. It really is one of the best isekai
The same argument about the difference between art and porn. You know it when you see it. With Mishoku Tensei I don't get the feeling that titalation is the the core motivation.
To eris in the bed scene. Spoiler about eris pov . ... . . . . . . . . . . . . It was eris mom waking her up, Dressing her and sending her to rudis room. Eris at that moment saw herself as gift and knew rudi didnt look at her as person. Thats why her reaction. She came back bc she didn't want rudi to hate her after her mom told her that rudi would be the only man accepting her. She was surprised seeing rudi apologize bc she thought she was at fault. Also why she apologized to rudi for pushing him when she sees rujierd bc she thought the Superd was a punishment for her actions. Autor wrote her pov in a way that the viewers know that moment was harmful in her life having a deeper impact later
I almost recommended this series and had to backpeddle before mentioning it when I remembered all the problematic material. While I can think past it I know many others will have a huge issue with it.
Man I genuinely ENJOYED This anime B U T The pedophilic shit just makes me SO uncomfortable and sick, it's FRUSTRATING AF It's got me in a place where I cannot comfortably recommend it and it SUCKS.
The part where he tried to do the thing with Eris spoke with me and opened my eyes... No one is going to see this but if you want to read more you can I was addicted to adult games, like really addicted. I was a complete and total degen, i was literal human scub and lowest anyone can get, it got so bad to the point where I started watching and even getting off to literal impossible situations and poses of certain characters that I liked in games or anime. It was disgusting. I hated myself and everyone around me felt fake. They felt like objects. I was objectifying everyone in my life, even my family didn't get recognition from me because of how tainted my scummy brain was. It was so bad and I only recently got over it (a few months ago) I'm trying to become a better person and that one scene literally slapped me in the face and told me, "This is you. You're the main character. You're a loser, change" It reminded me of how terrible P**n addictions are and even told me that.. maybe everything should be like korea and ban p**n everywhere. You will never be happy after going through something like this, I regret everything I did and I wish there was a way I can go back and tell myself to stop when I had the chance... Call me disgusting and a degen, I don't even care anymore because I was (and am still trying hard to not be) such a weirdo. Please if you see this listen to me, quit now. before it's too late. If you read all of this thank you.
Yeah. I bet allot of people see a little of themselves in Rudeus. Its not a good feeling. This show is great because it shows two things about addictions and bad habits: they never truly go away, and family is what can actually change you for the better. I'm rootin for ya. While I havent been that far gone, I sympathize with you.
There is porn out there that isn't dehumanizing (that I've felt show good examples of consensual mutually-enjoyable sex), but it's not gonna ring those demented ego parts the way our ubiquitously sexist and depraved mainstream market does. Good luck with your healing
@@ApexGale The fact that there were some very serious reunion somewhere about "what is the horniest character from Guilty Gear, our protagonist have to main it and we have to produce gameplay with it" amuses me to no end.
That lack of commentary on how the guy was bullied to the point of sexual assault is pretty interesting. Nice to see the patriarchy is alive and well in feminist hearts though.
I don't know how I somehow didn't catch up that this was all meant to make rudeus unlikeable, maybe too used to shows that "deal" with these subjects in the bad way and couldn't see that for once it was intended to be disgusting and bad just like I saw it. Makes a lot more sense now. But while now (thanks to this video) I see what's it's going for, I still can't watch "those" kind of scenes because they disgust me too much, so I just use the "skip 5 seconds" button when I see them coming (and have a friend that actually sits through them tell me if I missed anything important).
FINALLY SOMEONE GETS IT !!! DAMN sifting through the comments looking for someone who felt the same way I did was long, I can't believe how many people don't get it, I've resorted to saying "the show DID a good job portraying it as bad tho, else you wouldn't be here complaining about how immoral it is", it's so simple to understand how can most miss it. Totally respect what you said, totally agree, bye xD
@@daydreamteam1366 I get what you mean, but I just can't say a show did a good job portraying that content as bad if it still has underage characters shown in a way that could be seen as titillating. I don't care if it's to show us how Rudy sees her - that's kind of the problem. I think it might work better as something like a POV shot from the girl's perspective so we see how much of a creep Rudy is being without shoving underage girls on screen unnecessarily.
Just finished the second season and the growth in character development for rudeus is amazing. He isnt perfect and he fuck ups in ways that makes sense. But he trys to be better and it puts the question in my head can we all be better. Can serial killers genocidal maniacs, rapist, murders, can we all be better if given the chance. And should we live in a world where the justice system strays away from revenge and into a better life for all. That is a hard question and i dont think it would be answered this generation or the next but i feel it will be answered one day.
Mushoku tensei has quite a few aspects of real life that haven't touched in other animes. This show gain my respect to put in those elements. Even the widely used aspects still bring a different feeling in my opinion because of the unique style of story telling. The story is also good because of it's tempo. The story doesn't go too fast like some shitty anime (which super fast paced on critical/important part but have bunch of meaningless fillers) and also doesn't go too slow which cause this show to be easily enjoyed by both fast/slow pace anime fans. The show also use all of one episode's time bank for the story, which is OP and ED that I also really love about. It's about 3-4 minutes cuts off and it's really annoying in some animes that it's look like they're trying to make the episode has the least progress possible (which is actually the case in few anime, like Slime reincarnation recently. I personally love season 1 but season 2 is doing not so great job and I feel quite annoyed about it). This show actually feels opposite. Every episode is making the most progress possible while not having spacing issues is very interesting. Like, this is the first show that's so interesting that I actually have to go and read the web novel because I can't wait to see the story progress (which is a shame because I don't know about this WN earlier. Planning to buy Light novel to compensate that mistake tho). Even after that, I still find it interesting on each new episode. The world building and the character development is also good. The characters are not aiming for the absolute perfection with shits like 'protagonist is always right', 'protagonist is the strongest', 'protagonist have the best personality', etc like those bad anime (the protagonist actually a degenerate) plus the story is somewhat creat a familiar feeling with real life give me a great time follow the flow of the story and the feelings of the characters. The world building is very interesting and although being a fantasy world, feels close with real life and things that happen is quite reasonable and understandable. The art and the animation also looks beautiful and smooth that actually look like the creators put good effort on it, especially in the CGI. I don't know if they are using CGI or not, but if the do, the animation and art still look like hand crafted, which is a great job In conclusion, I think Mushoku tensei is easily the best anime of the season
The only people who i know who've dropped the show are some of my female weeb friends, mostly cited as being uncomfortable with the way Rudeus and Paul act, and its understandable even more from their perspective. It's not a show for everyone, and its probably going to be a journey too long for some to wait for it to be more comfortable, but i think it'll be great.
@@FindInfiniteEvolution Yeah take the moral high ground to feel superior. Now, tell us how sinless life you had, if you are a saint you can judge Rudy, if you are not, then you are just a hypocrite. Rudy is reminding you of your own lustful behaviors and it makes you uncomfortable? Very good, that is the point.
You almost convinced me to watch it. I was turned away automatically by a pervy baby. I'm excited to hear there's a lot of thoughtfulness and nuance behind this show, but I can't do this type of story. I don't have the heart for it.
I just finished watching it… can’t say I blame you but this anime got me invested in an arc that involves erectile dysfunction so that has to count for something. Also tears.
And that’s fine. Not all stories are to everyone's taste and if you feel uncomfortable with certain subject matter, then it’s fine to steer clear of this anime
As a LN reader, I'd say watch the anime, get past the creepy stuff and then prepare yourself for a masterpiece. The anime got huge potential. The character development, world building are all very satisfying. Besides Rudy's insane growth, the other characters are also very satisfying to watch . Highly recommend
i mean i love the universe i truly like it but the jokes about him touching little girl in very inappropriate places is just... yeah it keeps me from enjoying the show
I honestly don't think I would cringe nearly as much at the Rudy being a predator/pervert stuff if I didn't otherwise consider the show a near masterpiece and an essential part of my weekly lineup that I want to like and want other people to like. I'd probably just laugh it off or ignore it like I do Redo of Healer
The production and story is good, but Rudeus himself sucks ass honestly. Personally, I don't think the show does a good job at dealing with his perversion and pedophile antics, putting way too much humor in those actions or right after it than most would be comfortable with. Honestly, the show is not something I would recommend a watch to anyone I know, its like recommending a show with one terrible character and saying "guys, he gets better later.... like episode 200". I really want to power through this show, but man, its a chore to do so. It makes sense that you would just laugh it off or ignore it if it was like Redo of Healer, because Redo of Healer is so trash, it would be embarrassing if they take themselves seriously.. Its basically a hentai power and rape fantasy that "isn't" hentai because it doesnt show genitalia lol.
Same here, I really enjoy it, and while I understand the intent behind everything, with how Rudeus must learn from his previous live and become a better person, which means actually respecting women and their boundaries, those scenes are... very cringeworthy and I know I can't in good faith recommend it to people (or at least without mentioning this to them)
To be fair the dude had an absolutely horrid life to the point of isolating himself from everything and still be a virgin by the age of 30. Isolation and traumas makes you become the worst kind of social misfit, so of course he's gonna be pervy as shit. Thankfully he's taking his second chance at being alive somewhat better. Also he's technically a child now, regardless of if he wasn't when he first died, but hey, it's fantasy after all.
I love how as the story progresses Roxy’s panties go from an object of perversion and Rudy’s gross tendencies to something he genuinely worships and adores. It has to be one of the funniest on going jokes in any anime. This is not in the anime yet, but I can’t wait for it to be.
Literally caught up to Mushoku Tensei yesterday and can say certain things may make it not for everybody but I'm glad I caught up. This show is amazing
Wait so no one's gonna say that Lillia's an adult too and shes being an asshole for knowingly seducing a narried man? Paul's a piece of shit too, but let's not pretend both did something shitty lol.
I think it's worth making a distinction between isekai and general portal fantasy, simply because "isekai" clearly refers to a specific set of stories ninety-odd percent of the time.
After watching the video, there's only one thing I'd like to add: Mushoku Tensei is *raw*. Events aren't shown through rose-tinted lenses. You get to know just how Rudeus sees the world, and how he frames it. And as you mentioned: some of that framing is pretty fucked up. "Raw" is a word I feel definitely fits this show (and its source material). Such a polarizing approach is bound to not be for everyone, and people will view scenes as serving radically different purposes dependent on their outlook. As such, it is impossible to call this show an "objectively good take on the subject matter it attempts to handle", but it can definitely be said to be *a* take that is worthwhile. And so long as that take is worth something, then the show is worth watching. Whether that sort of dispositition is your cup of tea, well: if someone skipped ahead in the video when prompted, that's a good sign that this show's way of presenting "humanity's sins", as it were, is not for them. Both "careful" approaches and these sudden, "raw" approaches both have their place in media. The messages they send can both resonate, yet still deliver entirely separate emotions. The way they portray the gray areas of humanity has a lot to do with your final takeaway. And funnily enough, I feel as if these raw takes tend to have more optimistic takeaways than their safer alternatives. With more structured, "safe" approaches, I can't help but feel the author or presenter is attempting to guard me from their content and their message. For me, that makes the true threats of what they discuss feel all the more unnerving and unapproachable. As if the act of watching was taboo in some way. On the opposing side, raw approaches allow for the idea that "all this injustice *can* be changed" to come out in full force. No longer is the threat obscured. It's in front of me, and it's real. And if it's real, it can be defeated. The battle of against the disgusting unknown has become one of the disgusting known. Maybe I'm talking out of my ass, though. Regardless, I'm greatly enjoying Mushoku Tensei, but I understand fully if that isn't a universal opinion. It definitely does not present itself in a universally consumable way. Still, I hope those who are comfortable with its content warnings will at least give its first episode a shot. The characterization of Rudeus's inarguably shitty actions speaks volumes as to the hidden nature of this "isekai comedy". (Also, the CG is dope. Some cool ideas and directing decisions are being made constantly in this show. It's pretty neat.)
YES! That's one of the reasons I like it so much! It's true to life, true to the story and era it's telling! It doesn't try to morally correct itself so your heavily conservative hardcore Christian grandma will enjoy it, and THAT'S why it's great!
@@peacemaster8117 It's been a while since I've read the beginning of Mushoku Tensei (and also a while since I made my original comment), so my feelings on the matter may have changed, but I'll try to collect my thoughts anyway: I firmly believe that detailing a heinous crime such as child molestation in a way where it *isn't* heinous is impossible. The consumer can judge for themselves whether any singular event is terrible, regardless of how the author presents it (the only exception I can think of being that the consumer is reading some fetishized material, in which case, that's a conversation for them and whatever deity they worship to have-not for some random guy on the Internet to dissect. I'm not a therapist, or a lawyer). An example I would point to is the Vladimir Nabokov novel "Lolita". I'm not a literary expert, so I can't claim to know the ins-and-outs and nuances of the work and its impression on modern popular culture, but to my knowledge, the book portrays a heinous person and a heinous crime from the perspective of the heinous person themselves. There are plenty of moments where the protagonist attempts to justify his own actions, yet as far as I can see, there are few public reviews of the book which describe the book as "glorifying" or "portraying [the crime] through rose-tinted glasses". As a consumer, we can understand that the narrator is unreliable, and that the crime is abhorrent. Similarly, when Rudeus is committing his various acts of incel-ry, we are getting his unabashed viewpoint on the situation. But we are *not* Rudeus, and neither is the author. In short, I believe we can have a character who himself "glorifies" his actions, but not believe the story itself to be "glorifying". It's a matter of tone and presentation, not content. In addition, a healthy amount of separation from reality and fiction is required, and especially the cultural understanding that Japan handles topics of this nature much differently than we do in the west (and may not appeal to our sense of justice). For instance: I would argue most harem anime (with their cardboard cut-out characters and women devoid of initiative or context) are aggressively male-dominated at best, or aggressively sexist at worse. But I understand who the content caters to, and realize that it just "isn't for me". I have enough self-confidence to understand that Love Hina alone isn't going to send gender identity back two-hundred years-it doesn't have that kind of reach or power to do so. It's also fictional. Love Hina won't hurt me unless someone throws a copy of it at me. However, I'm understanding of the fact that for some people, "ignore it" is easier said than done. But since it's easy for me to ignore something, and doesn't negatively affect my day-to-day life, then it becomes a simple question of cost and reward. Does a campaign against Love Hina and stories like it justify its cost with a tangible reward? To me, no. To some others? Possibly. And to that I say: "to each their own". I can't quote any one scene from the anime or light novel verbatim (since it really has been a while for me, and while I could put in the research to do so, I hope you agree with me that such an effort is wasted on a RUclips comment chain). However, I vividly remember the medieval politics that Rudeus gets embroiled in near the start of his journey being painted in a firmly negative light (specifically the actions of Eris's father). From the perspective of a reader, I sure as heck wasn't comfortable, and I can't imagine I was the only one. But even assuming Rudeus *did* glorify the actions of Eris's father, does that make the light novel immoral? I'm not trying to make a statement by asking that question: I really don't know. In addition to not being a therapist or a lawyer, I'm also not a philosopher. You can argue the end-result of that question yourself if you care enough about its conclusion, but similar to Love Hina, I can't muster the care and thought required to definitively arbitrate that-Mushoku Tensei isn't going to be setting legal precedent for the next five-hundred years, and so long as it isn't, the answer is ultimately unimportant to me. But I did state something about cost-reward in my opinions on Love Hina, and I believe that's pertinent to bring up now: if you firmly believe that Mushoku Tensei is dangerous, and the cost-reward of taking it down ultimately leaves you or the world (or both) in a better place, then I won't object (to do so would be hypocrisy from me). Feel free to continue a campaign on it, just know I'm not someone you particularly need to convince. That's all I really have to say on the matter. If you have any major objections, feel free to reply. I didn't have much to work with, so chances are I may have misconstrued your argument. And if I appear antagonistic towards you, that isn't the case-that's just how I type. I'm always down for a discussion or a debate, so long as it's cordial.
Redo of healer isn't even trying to be self reflective. It's just pure, indulgent teenage edgelord. This is what your self insert isekai anime looks like after it saw that episode on Breaking Bad called no half measures. I can almost respect it for being so unapologetic about what it is.
So I can't keep watching the show. Literally every time I see the main character creep on a little girl I feel repulsed. I can fully acknowledge the beauty if the show and its merits. But the scene with Sylphie made me want to cry. I don't really get how people are ok with seeing this sort of thing over and over.
Its okay, you doesnt have to force yourself to watch anything, and dont watch it because it has nasty stuff is a valid position. I dont like it either but as a fan of fantasy this anime is the closest thing that I have to a Tolkien-Like or a Sanderson-like in Anime (and even more since I started to read the LN) but I cant asume that everyone will ignore that shit like I do, and thats okay.
I agree with you. It's honestly so puzzling to me how people love this show so much. Sure, perverted ecchi anime are abundant, but they are mostly laughed off as trashy entertainment pandering to lonely dweebs. How does this anime get such a pass? Because if something has good animation it can offset clear sexual harassment and pedophilia?
@@SquishyButt because its not real life. an i agree. every time rudy pulls that shit its gross, but thats part of the character arc. Also calling that scene "assault" is kinda dishonest. Eris did give consent at first! Then, when she chickened out, Rudeus didn't try to force her either. In fact, it was actually Eris who physically assaulted Rudeus. Eris had all rights to refuse the advances of Rudeus, but she certainly wasn't "justified" in acting so violent. It's still understandable because of her circumstances, but laying all the blame on Rudeus there is certainly not right.

@@gregallan4291 Far too many people seem to not understand the definition of presentism, they also seem completely incapable of separating reality from fiction. Honestly, it's almost a little sad to see people like you so utterly consumed in your "what I think is right" mindset. You are applying present moral standards and laws to a depiction of the mid-evil times, the LEGAL, LAWFUL age of consent around the entire world at that time was anywhere from 7 to 12 years of age. I am not advocating we return to a darker past but I am DEMANDING that we accept our history and learn from it. Something great about art is it enables us to explore often, taboo or otherwise unsavory subject materials in a safe manner. I am going to make you uncomfortable here, with this next subject but I think it's important people like you understand why having a "safe" space to "expel" less than socially acceptable things is actually BETTER for society as a whole. Rape fantasy, from a male perspective, is a very common fetish. Inherently this boils down to two main factors, a desire for control and an active sex drive. While I am not advocating for the legalization/normalization of rape or any such activity it is important to understand that this base carnal desire exists. That desire will continue to exist, due to the two instinctual factors driving it, how we choose to handle it is extremely important for society at large. Scientific studies across the board have demonstrated that repressing something with shaming, guilting or malice only causes these individuals to feel more ostracized and stray further from what is considered the social norm. Additionally, these pent-up emotions can tragically turn into gruesome very real assaults, on real women. This is NOT the result that society wants, that much I am sure we can agree on. By allowing such desires to be acquiesced in a safe manner and in a safe space (that of in art) this safe space, defuses this individual and reduces the chances of an actual real-life violation from occurring. No one is hurt digitally but repressing outlets for this sort of thing certainly leads to people being hurt in reality, all the science shows as much.
Easily the best Isekai I've ever seen. I also wish more shows would imitate the way it skips the typical anime opening and instead uses that time for montages and scenery shots to setup the episode.
This comment is going to blow up!
Re:Zero takes my top isekai spot for me, but this is a close second as long as I just skip over the gross scenes.
I have to agree. Mushoku Tensei is awesome. I'm loving the anime a lot!
@@damianpadayachee5111 Both parts of Re:Zero season two have certainly been fantastic and I'd definitely put it in my Top 5 Isekai (up there with Mushoku, Konosuba, Shield Hero, and probably some other heavy hitter I'm forgetting). I find paul to be a very interesting character, a father who cheated on his wife, slapped his son and isn't good at teaching his son sword styles. @@loturzelrestaurant alright.

Honestly, that made me drop the manga, the fact that his piece od shit father basically got away with it was too much
@@baneofthebread He does get away quite easy but he's really regret his mistake after that. He wouldn't get away so easily if Rudeus didn't help him because Rudeus don't want the family to be broken. He also got punished after that quite a long time and that was like his natural habit when he was younger (don't know what the manga said but Lilia has a line that said she's the one who want to do shits with him, not so sure if that was the case so I just gonna leave this here) so I think it's decent if he got away with that for the sake of the family
But also, hey.

I’ve read the WN multiple times and I keep up to date with the LN because I love the extra story thrown in and yea like James said his growth is just plain amazing yea he keeps his trait of being a pervert but it’s really toned down when he’s an adult and as an adult he doesn’t go around assaulting all women he sees or even acts like he acts now.
As a person who's dad died in his arms before I could actually, properly grow up in front of him and prove him I was fully capable of being a man, do it before it's too late.

It's a uncomfortable story with the parents doing the deed. However, Rudy's actions is necessary to the story.

Seriously, imagine those fights with some decent direction and a little sakuga
Even in medieval times, while it was *more* acceptable, the evidence we have says that those sorts of things were generally viewed with disgust by the overwhelming majority of the population. The nobility was really the only place where it was semi-regularly practiced, as a means of securing political power -- marriage/sex at young ages in the Middle Age peasantry was very rarely documented and usually considered highly objectionable. It wasn't as common as people often think it was, because it *was* still incredibly messed up, even back then.
That's part of the point, nobles and princes and princesses are romanticized, but this shows the dirty reality.

The concept of Dowry in China originally from husband's family to purchase the young girl as part of theirs family.
That's why the story of young famers girl get purchase to marry to an older famers in China is not so surprising and we are talking about recently, not 1000 years ago which much much worse.
It's less "vulgarity" and more _visceral_ to me. With a lot of anime, even if they're edgy, there's a feeling of fantasy to it that made it feel unreal. In here, I can believe most of it and there is so much emotional honesty in everything and the way it's depicted that I get emotionally attached to everyone and can believe that there are or were real people like that.
This is the journey of a child loving pervert who is never confronted for how his behaviour hurts others. He is just rewarded throughout the story
Do you really relate to this kind of story? On an emotional standpoint it rings a bell? Are you a ok bro?
You can see yourself in Rudeus? WTF 😳
They admitted that their mindset isn't good and that this story made them take a good look at themselves. Rudeus isn't rewarded for his actions because they are good, he's rewarded because that's just how men in that world act.

Humm they admitted that it is not good so now it is okay. Hey they said it so we can just close our eyes and relate to rudeus. The story is so self aware, that there is nothing wrong with still putting this kind of behaviour everywhere as they said that it is bad.
😂
Please, this is not how story telling works, it is not sufficient to say it is bad, you have to show it. You have to show consequences. Even if it is there rules, what we end up is a pervert who is living his dream and touching kids, without him having to face the consequences.
And as he grows slowly out of it the weirdos who like anime relate to him...

A morally dubious character is not the same as a dubiously written character. His antics isn't a reflection of the story or show, its just a reflection of his character. Thank God theres actually character development in this show. It makes a character with rotten flaws growth more refreshing. You can't get growth from a perfect character.
Underrated comment.
The fact that his father sent him away cause he realize how overly attached and dependent she was on him should tell you something
It can say that it is weird but it does nothing to actually show it.
And he is giving trauma to way more little girls.
A huge part of the judgement the characters receive is really in people's attitudes and beliefs on the tropes and stereotypes shown but you have to take things holistically and without bias and prejudice to understand and appreciate things.

the family and friend portions of MT are without a doubt the highlights. seeing how much he cares about his family and his friends and how he achieves more by working together with them is the real enjoyable part of MT. i wish the author had toned down the whole perverted thing because sometimes he kind of ruins the tone he sets with that.
That one is Obviously Revenge Porn: A La Mode

Kaguya Shinomiya best Tsundere, fite me!

When you described the scene where the queen accepts the protag with a hug it got tears out of me. Absolutly convinced me to give this show a shot.

May I ask where you where able to read it

He may have the mind of a 32 years old hikikomori, but he IS a child in this other world, he has lived too little compared to other people in the world he inhabits and he needs to get there to actualy grow.

the problem is that the only problem that rudeus seems to have is that he's a horny creep. like, no other side effects of being a neet shut in have been brought up, aside from the brief scene where he struggled to go outside, which was solved 5 minutes later.
Jobless Reincarnation isn't a iseaki story that happens to be good, it's a good story that happens to be an iseaki.
He basically becomes better person entirely through sheer will in a sort of arbitrary way despite the way that the story keeps rewarding him for his pervy shit.
@@Drake00000010 which in turn makes it more real. The world is not black and white, "pervy shit" does not always have consequences and doesn't need to. Last time i checked the feminazies have not won and turned the world into hell on earth so it is still legal to look at women.

@@CanonOverseer i heard it was because the studio was funded SPECIFICALLY for this anime.
I like the show. But I'm not going to lie the main character seeing young girls and women as sexual objects instead of people makes me very uncomfortable. I don't disagree with your points at all. But I do want to add my perspective as a woman:
There are a lot of anime that have a scene where a dude does something sexually inappropriate to a woman and it's played as a joke where the punchline is the dude getting assualted. This happens a LOT in the Mushoku Tensei anime as well. And while some viewers will say, "yeah good beat his ass", other viewers will chuckle at the concept of female anger and say "lol those crazy women"
I don't think Mushoku Tensei has done enough yet to tell the audience that molesting a child isn't a funny haha joke.

While I can see your point, I dont think that they add that into the anime, because you do have to take the setting of this world into consideration .
I do think that they shouldn't have played it off as a joke though, because it ruins the atmosphere and the impact of the lesson that rudeus learns and is, as you said, simply not appropriate, given the circumstances.
Heck, it would have been really good from a director's perspective if they did that, as the contrast to scenes like that from before would draw a very clear line between what they think is morally acceptable and it would have further enhanced the rudeus's reflecting from a viewer's standpoint
Maybe they could have done it like in Redo of healer and add a warning before the episode
Very mild spoilers ( to explain what I meant by setting of this world)?
They are in a kingdom that approves polygamy, where it is normal to do these deeds. I don't know if they are using CGI or not, but if the do, the animation and art still look like hand crafted, which is a great job
In conclusion, I think Mushoku tensei is easily the best anime of the season

I wish I could "love" your comment, not just like it, so this is the best I can do. 💛
"Events aren't shown through rose-tinted lenses"
Child molestation is.
@@peacemaster8117 It's been a while since I've read the beginning of Mushoku Tensei (and also a while since I made my original comment), so my feelings on the matter may have changed, but I'll try to collect my thoughts anyway:
I firmly believe that detailing a heinous crime such as child molestation in a way where it *isn't* heinous is impossible.
My friend: “this anime is immoral.”
Also my friend: “bro that new episode of Redo of Healer though...”
Redo of healer is God teir best anime of the year next to ex arm that is
It's probably because of the "justification" the story gave.
Redo of healer is god tier
Redo of healer isn't even trying to be self reflective. It's just pure, indulgent teenage edgelord. This is what your self insert isekai anime looks like after it saw that episode on Breaking Bad called no half measures.
I can almost respect it for being so unapologetic about what it is.
In Redo of Healer, everyone is getting what they deserve. Is just madness and it's fun.
So I can't keep watching the show. Literally every time I see the main character creep on a little girl I feel repulsed. I can fully acknowledge the beauty if the show and its merits. But the scene with Sylphie made me want to cry. I don't really get how people are ok with seeing this sort of thing over and over.
How often are girls going to be hurt by this character so he has a sense of growth? How redeemable are literal pedophiles?
Its okay, you doesnt have to force yourself to watch anything, and dont watch it because it has nasty stuff is a valid position.
I dont like it either but as a fan of fantasy this anime is the closest thing that I have to a Tolkien-Like or a Sanderson-like in Anime (and even more since I started to read the LN) but I cant asume that everyone will ignore that shit like I do, and thats okay.
@@playalover23 that scene with eris was basically the last time, unless they change stuff in season 2 from the light novel.
Rudy is a dirtbag at the start and slowly transitions into a decent human being. perhaps even heroic. it will take his whole life though. Evangelion has similar shit it it. most anime has this kind of stuff. game of thrones had worse stuff in it and it was one of the most beloved shows out there.
So. I just binge-watched all of the episodes and I'm HOOKED. Like, seriously - this show is really good.
"They're almost like Shonen rivals, which as we all now is the most romantic kind of relationship there is" This like is genius lmaoo
i think i have a better understanding of BL doujinshi now...
Correction: Philip didn't send Eris to Rudy's room, Hilda did.
@@fehervari98, it still rubs me the wrong way when she is still a child. It shouldn't matter if she gives consent on it b/c she is still a child and he is mentally an adult.
@@AntoniaEsposito I personally don't really care about that. They're both physically children. Age never really mattered in this series, only the roots and nature of people's intentions.
@@fehervari98 You should care. On a legal and moral standpoint, fictional or not, it is still assault and non-consensual. ESPECIALLY since Rudy is mentally an adult.
Another thing i like about mushoku tensei is the fact that strong people stay strong. There's no escalating in power scale like many many show
