Apparently she ended up working with Liza Manelli once and as it turned out Liza had seen her impersonation... and loved it. If you watch the SCTV DVD's be sure to listen to the commentary especially when it's done by Andrea Martin and Catherine O'Hara. The commentary (and extras) are fascinating if you're into SCTV, and the Martin/O'Hara commentary is especially fun to listen to.

With apologies to Kristen Wiigs brilliantly silly impersonation of Liza, Andrea Martin captures the sad urgency of Liza's personality, while hitting all the mannerisms and stylings on the button.
And all the while, keeping up with Sammy and William B.
      Pretty fantastic.

I remember watching this live and recall Carson was not happy afterwards . NBC had just recently done a Tonight Show anniversary special, so SCTV couldn’t resist doing this Maudlin skit. Carson, who I love, took it personally. I never thought the Maudlin Show was a spoof of the Tonight Show, but they clearly borrowed and twisted some of it’s elements like William B/Ed McMahon. It was more reminiscent of the Sammy Davis Jr show and rat pack celebrities. The whole thing was like an alternative universe where vain low talent celebrities sucked up to one another and shamelessly self promoted. The bit worked really well.
