  • SCTV's 18th and final show from season 6 on Cinemax in 1984.
The budget for the final season of SCTV ran out and episode 18 was a bust, so they got inventive and conceived another Pledge Week concept which required no sets, cinematography etc., interspersed with an old movie (Of Human Bondage) with the dialog overdubbed, under the title of The Steve Beshekas Story. Steve was a Chicago legend who was in John Belushi's first Improv group, The West Compass Players, along with Tino Insana.
SCTV did the same maneuver as this one in the final episode of season 3 when an overdubbed version of "Laugh Track's" The Cisco Kid was aired to fill the void (featuring Martin Short who would not become a cast member until years later ).
Catherine O'Hara was not a regular cast member at the time of this episode but she returned for one of her many special appearances in this wonderful, uncut finale.

Forty years later, it still makes me angry that arguably the greatest sketch comedy show in history ended with such little fanfare. Yet, it's somehow in keeping with the show's history--it began as a barely-funded, unknown ensemble show on Global TV in Toronto & ended up on a cable network barely seen. But in between, they created a comedic legend, usually with one camera, one mic, & no gerbils! #LaRue4Ever

SCTV could have gone on but alas all good things must come to pass. Martin Short already had one foot out the door and was headed to SNL. Andrea Martin and Eugene Levy wanted to do feature films. And Joe Flaherty just wanted to take a break after 8 years of playing Floyd Robertson and a bevy of others. So SHOWTIME pulled the plug, unlike SNL which has become the obnoxious relative who doesn't want to leave and overstays his/her welcome. Long live SCTV!

Watching this episode was bittersweet. I've seen most of the episodes a few times but hadn''t seen the finale until now. Although there were funny moments, its evident they were still chugging along but running on fumes. And they knew it. The Steve Bashekis Story is either the longest skit they ever did or just feels like it.
Its still a good episode considering half the cast wasn't there - if you count John''s magnanimous presence twice, which is fair - which was sad. It seems like the last season had more cameo appearances than regular performers. How great would it have been if everyone could have been all together one final time, in a fun, feelgood episode like the Christmas episodes.
However, considering their humble beginnings, the way they played it was fitting - wanly petering out and leaving Edith Prickley, perhaps the series' longest running character - Andrea first played Edith in the stage show - to turn out the lights.
Or does she? An awful lot of those phones were ringing......

Even if you hated season six of this show, you have to admit, the final episode was good, even if there was no return of all the cast members who left.

If I remember well, Dave and Rick were doing their Mackenzie brothers thing, John Candy was shooting a movie, and I don't really remember about Harold Ramis, but he had left the show several seasons earlier
