These two just completely dwarf a lot of legendary things in football.
Take 2014 for example. That world cup is mainly remembered because of the 7-1. But anyone who watched the 2014 final may remember Bastian Schweinsteiger‘s performance. The dude had multiple fouls and even a bleeding wound and still pushed his German team like an absolute boss til the very end. And he wasn‘t even the captain. It was the best performance I have ever seen in a world cup final. And in Germany, people still talk about it today. But outside of Germany, it is not remembered. Because Messi was on the pitch during that game. Ever since Argentina won in 2022, things like Schweinsteiger‘s performance are even more forgotten. And that is plain insulting…

I love watching Messi & Ronaldo (I am not Argentinian or Portuguese), and you hit the nail on the head, aside from the ones you mentioned Suarez, Ibrahimovic, Cavani all got overlooked, if they would have played 15-30 years earlier they would have all won the golden ball or shoe, and now, their shadows are so large, that all these and those players you mentioned did not and will never get the recognition they deserved. I hope you are right, and everyone (especially the press) “reset” our expectations, recognizing that Messi and Ronaldo are once in a lifetime players, we are not likely to ever see players achieve those numbers again in our lifetime (maybe ever) and expecting new players to do so, will only detract from appreciating the great new generational talent we have, and also impact our love/appreciation of the beautiful game. We should give credit and recognize that there are still generational anomalies today, yes, they will not reach the seemingly unreal heights of Messi & Ronaldo, but nevertheless, there are incredible talents that should be celebrated, in short, we need to learn how to appreciate once again, by lowering our inflated expectations.

I think the main problem it's less about football today.. For many players it's almost more important to be big on social media than being great at football nowadays.
Players have become a brand making millions in ads and such.
back in the 90s-00s some players started to sell for ridiculously high amounts but the primary focus was still on football.
Nowadays alot of ppl cheer for a player rather than a team..

The thing about Messi and Ronaldo is that they are simply in a class/league of their own. If I were to make a tier list from S to D they wouldn’t be in any of the tiers. They are outside of that. You could say that Maradona, R9, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Rooney, Ramos etc comes close to Messi and Ronaldo, but no. They might in skill, goal scoring, elegance, importance to a team. But they don’t come close in all the categories. Messi and Ronaldo had the most goals, most assist, most fun to watch, had the longest peaks, not only longest peaks but their peaks is the best ever, most fans, made most money for their clubs, had the whole team looking up to them. In comparison to Haaland for example when you watch Messi and Ronaldo you see how their skills as footballers lead to the goals and assist. Haaland has been fun to watch because it’s unprecedented to score on almost every chance you get. But he mostly stands in the box and finishes. In school football no one liked the guy that played like that. Messi and Ronaldo could get the ball in any part of the pitch and you would never know if they would create magic and score.
Longevity, a peak that lasted 10-15 years, their numbers, importance, magic and how they are the faces of football shows how everyone else needs to be held to a different standard

They were like what we had seen in part with the great Brazilian Ronaldo, but in an era when all the pitches were perfect and players weren’t kicked to the same degree, protected more by the game. And both played for one half of the greatest derby in football. It was just perfect.

I think you are right, but the problem is that it hasn’t only affected the viewers, it’s affected the players. The passion when somebody scores a goal is often not there unless it’s in the highest of stakes. As well as this, tactics have often shifted away from trying to display the beauty of football, and more towards tactics which prioritise efficiency. Players today are often discouraged to show flare because it might cost them a goal, and power and raw athleticism is favoured more.

Ask Zidane, who mentioned a connection with Messi, knowing what he intended to do, Renaldo also turned into a more complete player as he got older. Do you think their teams asked them to slow down their goal scoring, I hear the pundits of the primere League talking about the many wonderful players playing in their leagues, they Messi and Ronaldo were something special, but now it's coming to an end, every sport has it's once in a lifetime talent, formula one, basketball tennis it happens then you have to move on until one day it happens again, enjoy your sport, anomalies happen in life everyday somewhere at someplace, just sit back and enjoy your favorite sports, because things change everyday, it will pass but talent goes on and on.

However, we lived through a period defined by that because we had the 2 best individual players of all time playing at the same time and were consistently better than everyone and every team around them. Football will go back to how it was because there is no way we will see players like Messi or Ronaldo for a very long time and therefore teams and groups of players will stand out beyond just individuals. Its unfortunate that for the next few years players will be defined by what made those 2 great but isn't that to be expected? The world has celebrated their brilliance because it was truly incredible to watch, not just the numbers but their ability with a football was magnificent to see for 2 decades. I do miss seeing players stand out for their brilliance at certain parts of the game but theres a reason why Ronaldo and Messi are considered the goats and it isn't because of recency bias.

  • @edowino
    @edowino Месяц назад +6

There are many layers to it, but I 'd wager that Real Madrid, Barca & La Liga are more to blame. Why? First, at the time the rivalry started, Spain had the most football talent of any country, most Latin American footballers had Spain as their preferred destination. As set up, Real and Barca each controlled more TV revenue than the rest of La Liga teams put together. This meant that Real & Barca had access to the very best talent in the world. The two could also out bid any other team other than Man City & PSG.
The second problem is how the 2 teams decided to deploy their talent. Rather than playing in a balanced way where goals were to be expected from a variety of players, they set up the teams to play like water carriers for the two. Both teams had competent penalty & free kick takers but they had to forfeit all those chances to Cristiano & Messi. There was a particular time when a Real player took a chance & scored when Cristiano was in a position to, Cristiano threw a tantrum for being denied the opportunity.
The league played their bit by giving away far too many dodgy penalties & free kicks to the 3 teams.
Finally, the international federations also played like fan boys by behaving like there were no other players of winning the top prize. Over that period there were years when Iniesta, Ribery & Neuer were far more deserving but the Cristiano vs Messi rivalry had to be stoked. This on its own brought a sense of entitlement that we saw in 2024 when Real threw a hissy fit when they learnt that Vinicius is not winnings the Ballon d'Or.
My observation? They most definitely ruined football.

They both normalised 30+ goal Golden Boot worthy seasons year after year. Those are god-like numbers, barely matched by the best strikers of this generation in their peak season. Ronaldo's power and Messi's finesse were a delight to witness, especially watching them clash on Clasicos. One as decisive as the other, Ronaldo is the player you want in an important match but Messi will drag your team through the different stages leading to that match. 91 goals in a year is mental. 17 goals in an UCL campaign is mental. 14 combined Ballon d'Ors is mental. 78 combined titles is mental.

I believe this is a trend that is affecting various sports. It’s no longer enough to achieve success just once; athletes must continually win, consistently outperform their competition, and maintain excellence over time. We see this phenomenon in sports like football, NFL, basketball, Formula 1, golf, tennis, baseball, and the 100-meter sprint. Legendary athletes such as Messi and Ronaldo in football, Tom Brady in the NFL, LeBron James and Stephen Curry in basketball, Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher in F1, Tiger Woods in golf, and the trio of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic in tennis, along with Serena Williams and Usain Bolt, have not only excelled but have also set exceptionally high standards. This relentless pursuit of greatness seems to spoil fans, as they come to expect extraordinary performances consistently across these sports. The same principle applies to movies and any other area that has a dedicated fan base.

In some ways football has deteriorated because the top teams have got better. With some exceptions virtually all the trophies are won by a handful of teams whereas in the past there was a much wider spread of winners. In the UK the first division winners came from a fairly wide range of teams. Now there is the very occasional dark horse like Leicester but it’s down to a few candidates. Even the best teams lost games and you were happy when your team won. Now is more a relief when they don’t lose because even a few losses in a season can be fatal.

In the last few months I started watching a few games and I must say I had fun, especially for example the Barcelona games. I don't know why but I like to see young players being creative and trying to develop their own identity on the pitch. But comparing them to, as you said, anomalies that won't be achieved in the next (I don't know) 20+ years is just ridiculous. So as a "new" fan of the sport I can only say I'm having fun, even though I probably missed the best time of football. But hey, as long as someone is having fun with the sport I don't care. *I don't like what football has become today. They have changed the look and feel of football. Great stadiums like Real Madrid's Bernabeu stadium have turned into indoor arenas. They play with the roof closed. What's cool about playing football with a roof? This is not indoor football. Football is an outdoor sport and is supposed to be played outdoors. Football stadiums are outdoor arenas. Now all new stadiums are now semi-indoor or fully indoor arenas. You want to play football out in the fresh air. You need maximum oxygen to perform.*
Then there's VAR. Every contact is awarded a penalty. Football is a contact sport. Contact is allowed to happen and will happen. Anytime a player gets contact they go down on purpose or easily to get a penalty. They also wait for contact to be made or move their body towards the opponent to make contact on purpose. VAR don't even look to see if the player is going down on purpose, easily or trying to make contact on purpose. They make their decision based on replays in slow motion. Slow motion makes it look worse than it actually was. We don't live in a slow motion world. Reality is not in slow motion. They should make their final decision watching the replay back at normal speed after looking at the incident in slow motion. Most penalties should not be awarded because the players go down on purpose. It's already clear in slow motion and even more clear at normal speed. Normal speed shows the reality.
Then there are other things like all new stadium the fans are further away from the pitch. The atmosphere was better when the fans are as close to the pitch as possible.
Other strange rules like Yellow card for taking your shirt off. Yellow card for touching the fans to celebrate.
Also the match balls have become inferior. Traditional 32 panel balls preformed the best. They go where you want them to go. It's not fair today's players are playing with balls that have weird panel shapes that perform less.
That's why we had better football in the past and amazing stylish players with their own unique style like Ronaldinho, Zidane, Beckham, R9 etc. because they were using 32 panel balls.
The look and feel of football has become worse.
