    I'm Italian, my father is 62 years old and he saw Maradona play at the stadium, even when he was 8 years old in the 70's he saw the final of the World Cup Brazil-Italy 4-0 on black and white TV (he cried a lot 😂 ) and he has also looked at Messi throughout his career. His personal opinion is that the two of them are unique because they are two geniuses, but looking rightly at every single aspect, in his opinion Messi is the best even for the long life he has had at times If you love someone you have to be realistic, but I know it's not for everyone, and in any case the numbers speak for him

    I was lucky to have watched both players career when they played. Watched Maradona from 1979 to 1990. Watched Messi from 2005.
    Messi's got all the midfield playmaking chops Maradona had. Backed with Pelé & Cristiano Ronaldo frontline prolific goalscoring prowess, which Maradona simply didn't have. He's also maintained his elite levels far longer, deep into his 30s to win a world cup, 2 Copa America's.
    He's also the best close control dribbler of a ball I've seen. Maintaining possession even when he's got 3-4 oppenents pressing on him all together. Maradona had a beautiful touch & caress to the ball & could manipulate the ball with all manners of freestyle skills, similar to Pelé. But Messi just glides with the ball over the opposition. Making the complex look all so easy. And his final ball pass deliveries, devastating. He's just a more complete football machine to Maradona & gets the win for me.

      @@michaelpachuau3885 great point but the video airbrushes this crucial fact conveniently out of the picture. Really, these Gen Z infuriates me with their "instagram" backed attention span and laziness. How can you possibly compare Ballon d'or awards between Messi and Diego when Maradona wasn't even eligible for it (and not his fault by the way). While I agree that overall there is no question that in terms of trophies and consistency, Messi is the superior player but even in terms of the champion's league, you have to make allowance that there was no champion's league system up to 92-93 and you had to be the defending league champion to qualify for the European cup (as it was known before the UCL). Further, you still had to be the league champion to participate up until the 97-98 season when league runner-up were allowed. This coupled with the fact that Seria A was very competitive in the 1980s and esp mid 80s to early 90s meant that a player like Maradona (or Van Basten or Platini etc) would get less exposure to winning the UCL as you wouldn't always qualify for it. From 2009, the first 3 or 4 league standing teams were allowed from the bigger leagues. So, no begrudging Messi's talent and dedication, but circumstances were too different to Maradona's time. I agree that Maradona spoiled his career with his undisciplined life. And before some idiot tells me "defenders are better today", no "junior", they are better but not in every aspect. Defenders today are better at setting up attacks and (like all outfield players) are more "rounded." But a case may be made that between the late 80s till the mid 2000s we actually had the "best" "pure" defenders of all time. Virgil van Dyk is much superior than Maldini/Nesta/Cannavaro at stepping into attack but in pure defending terms, they were better (though not by too great a margin because van Dyk is also a generational talent).

      Dinho was a force, he single-handedly could win matches regularly. He carried Barcelona since day one, and his downfall was rijkaard's FCB's. Late Milan ronaldinho couldn't carry the team, but was still and artist and a differential player. In his 30s he won a Libertadores.

    It's a lot closer actually. Eras can't be compared.
    I am Argentine, watched the 2 of them. Messi his whole career, Maradona his final years.
    European football since the effects of the bosman rulling were established is all about 7 or 8 super clubs that hoard the best players of the planet in bulk, even if they don't use them in order to beat the competition.
    Look at Chelsea...
    In Maradonas time, before the bosman rulling clubs were a lot more even and competitive. So on big clubs had a couple of great players but also regular ones in your own team, and the opposition was in average stronger.
    Give Maradona the chance to play alongside lots of the best players in the world for 15 years vs Alaveses and rayos vallecanos and your stats will be a lot better.
    Maradona faced brutal, career ending tackles all his career. Messi didn't. Talented players like Messi are protected by refs these days thanks to players like Maradona.
    World cup qualifiers were a lot different. Hence Maradona played a lot less games on the national team. Messi has great stats, but padded specially on the last years thanks to the terrible friendly games Tapia, the AFA president, organized. They might as well play Sunday league teams.
    Messis behaviour gives him the edge but maybe his family learnt from Maradonas case what to to manage his career properly.
    Maradona was the first truly global sports superstar. You might also bring Pele but telecominications weren't as developed in the 50s/60s so he had less reach

      Sir, you are being lenient to defenders of that era, Ronaldo Nazario dominated the Serie A for one season with Inter, and the next season his knee exploded twice. Sliding double foot tackles at full velocity, constant leg kicking man markers, tower center backs jump down pressing during corners, just to name a few. And Ronaldo Nazario is 6ft 90kg big man.

      Pele's first WC he was not instrumental, he contributed as a teen which is magnificent for sure, but it was not because of Pele that they won. Pele was injured an entire WC of the 3 "he" won, and most agree he wasnt even the best player of the tournament of WC 70, that prized belonged to his teamate whose name i cant remember but was the top goalscorer and overall better performer, but Pele was the bigger name and so got the award. Maradona had an unreal 86 WC for sure, but people forget that unlike with messi and higuain in 86 Maradona's teammates stepped up when they needed to, otherwise germany would have taken that title. Maradona was a disaster in 82, and 94. And Messi had although not as great still great 2014 WC(which should have won if Higuain had not choked so damn hard, or Di Maria gotten injured) then 2022 amazing record breaking performance. Neither Pele nor maradona won a copa america or olympic tournament, and Messi now has 2 copa america and 1 olympics, in all 3 wins winning player of the tournament award. They're different players, with different characteristics who played in different eras, so I don't know how useful comparisons are, particularly GOAT discussions. Messi needed to be surrounded by top players, which he in turn made better. Maradona could carry a team all by himself, although it wasn't clear how well he could co-exist with other great players. Messi played in an era in which attackers were carefully protected by the rules and the referees, while Maradona was butchered continuously. (As was Pele' before him). And of course, Maradona's personal vices destroyed him, so he didn't have Messi's longevity. If I could only add one player to a team, I'd pick Maradona. If I were rounding out a championship team, I'd pick Messi. There are just different abilities.
    I also think that Alfredo di Stefano needs to be part of this discussion of great Argentines, as he dominated his era more than the other two did. All of those Real Madrid Champions Cup wins were his. And he apparently could play just about any position on the field expertly, and did, anticipating Cruyff's style in this.

      Messi pulled up one of the worst Argentine squads in the last 20 years to a world cup victory. I don't think he needed to be surrounded by top players to win.
      Maradona also played in an era where most teams weren't anywhere near as stacked as they are now. Most teams didn't have good players so it was easier for 1 or 2 players to influence a game.
      Maradona in today's game can't carry a team like he did back then. And realistically, in this day and age, with the teams being so stacked, no player really can carry a team to that level.

      And where were all the good players plying their trade in the 80's and 90's if you say no team had more than 2 of them? Were few people in the world playing football in those days? How could the talent pool have been that much smaller when there were still billions of people on the planet?

    If we imagine a head-to-head match between Maradona at his peak and Messi at his best in a World Cup final, the answer might depend on what qualities you value most in a player.
    Maradona was known for his raw, explosive energy and fierce spirit on the field, especially in high-stakes matches. In his prime, he often played with a sense of urgency and fearlessness that inspired his teammates and could shift the game in his favor, especially when facing tough opponents.
    Messi, on the other hand, has an extraordinary level of skill, control, and consistency, often turning games around with his incredible playmaking abilities. His vision, precision, and unique approach have helped him dominate games in his own way.
    I will definitely choose Maradona as the winner as an appreciation for his intensity and drive, especially in a pressure-filled World Cup setting where he led Argentina to victory in 1986. He excelled in challenging situations and had a larger-than-life presence that seemed to fuel his team’s confidence and performance.

    Messi is the Greatest of all time, there was never a debate.
    If you are talking of passing ability, Messi, Verratti, Kroos, Iniesta are in the debate against Maradona, but Ronaldinho edges out with a margin as the king of passes.
    Neymar Junior and Maradona have equal playmaking potential as Messi. But Messi edges them both with his goal scoring ability.
    However, Johan Cruyff is the greatest playmaker of all time, only behind Ronaldinho in Passing ability.
    When you discuss about to goals, Messi enters in the debate as well. But this time against Christiano Ronaldo. Messi still edges out in goals per game ratio.
    Messi can't be compared to others, because he takes much more responsibility than others.
    Messi delivers successfully more than others on his responsibility as well.
    In very simple terms, Messi is both a genius in playmaking, and a genius in scoring.

    I think Messi is better but the idea that it is just media that brings up comparisons is wrong. There are GENUINE comparisons. Nowadays Europe is undoubtedly more prestigious than South America. But back then a lot of those claims were actually just bias. Up until the turning point of football when the sport became more systematic, it was close. Before becoming Maradona was a senior player Argentinos Juniors were a relegation side. Immediately when Maradona debuted they became a powerhouse. Then he joined Boca who were struggling and established them as powerhouses again. Non-bias media had already proclaimed him the best player in the world multiple times. Another piece of context is before the Calciopoli scandal the Serie A was the best league in the world. And Maradona at Napoli was the best the league had ever seen. His time in LaLiga was criminally underrated. He didn’t win much similar to Messi in the latter stages of his Barca career, but was still the hardest player to go up against. Now let’s talk internationally. He only won one WC, but should have won more. Maradona was left out of the Argentina side that won their first ever WC, but was considered one of the best Argentinians in the world at 17. His spot was taken by an inferior player due to political reasons. People still talk about the hand of god without realizing in the 1982 WC Argentina was arguably the best team but was victim to extreme European bias (as where many South American giants) with some of the most clear decisions against them in history. In 1990 he arguably did better than Messi in 2014; both lost finals to Germany. But people accept Messi as the best player in the 2014 WC without seeing how scrappy his run to the final was. It was almost the exact same as England in the Euros this year. Meanwhile Maradona was truly cooking in 1990.

    It's insane to think that you could take in consideration statistics, winning, awards since not only at the time the game was different it was much MUCH more position and defending focused, meanwhile today it's much more speed and attacking focused, today's game is much more similar to pelè's age game in brazil, and in brazil only, on the eye test it is a discussion but not as good as you make it, there are points that could go to messi, but they are not really comparing to maradona, he played in the best era of defending and in the hardest league of the time with the best defenses probably ever on average (not the best defense ever, but the league with, on average, the best defending ever) and could score imposaible goals just as good as messi's and even better goals, and it's crazy to say that awards and winnings are individual points to discuss, otherwise lautaro and alvarez are better than prime kane, and statistics kinda become meaningless in front of the context.
    I don't know who is thebest between maradona, pelè, messi and pre injury ronaldo (the true ronaldo) and idon't think anyone does, but saying that there isn't a debate is crazy, and this comes from someone who grew up with the messi era, who loved messi so much that watched almost every game of his, who held him as the greatest of all time for quite a period, who never thought that messi vs ronaldo was even a debate, but to say that maradona and messi are not extremely close, and use these arguments to support the idea, shows me your tremendous bias and that you have a shallow understanding of the game over the different ages.
    Don't take this offensively because it's not meant fo be an insult

    It is intriguing to observe a sociological phenomenon where individuals often believe that their contemporary experiences represent the pinnacle of historical achievement. This perspective can be influenced by various factors, including advancements in technology, which contribute to improvements in certain areas, including football.
    Moreover, it is essential to recognize that each era of football is characterized by distinct rules, cultural contexts, and playing conditions, rendering comparisons between legends from different decades somewhat impractical. The remarkable talents of past players, such as Pelé and Maradona, have undoubtedly laid the groundwork for the current generation of athletes, thereby enriching our present-day entertainment.

    • @LNLBD
      @LNLBD Месяц назад

      I agree with that. But at the same time I think some people may reach such high levels in their respected crafts, that they transcend time and become a benchmark for all future generation. For example are poets of today able to surpass the poetic genius of Homer, Virgil, Dante or Shakespeare? Is there any modern writer with the ability to make deep insights about human nature as Dostoyevsky did? Who among Bach, Mozart and Beethoven is the greatest musician of all time? Is Taylor Swift better than them just because she lives and creates today? The same discussion is valid in football between Maradona and Messi whose genius is in par with the likes of Dante and Mozart. It is hard who is better between them as they both played in a different times and circumstances, but only one of them won everything there is to win in football. Actually, Messi is the only player to win every major trophy in football. So if we have to choose a king among the genius footballers, Messi is the most obvious choice.

    • @TCGTales
      @TCGTales Месяц назад

      @@LNLBD While Lionel Messi has undoubtedly achieved remarkable success by today's standards, it is important not to use his accomplishments as the sole benchmark for evaluating the entirety of football history. In the eras of Pele and Maradona, the landscape of the sport was significantly different; for instance, there was no Champions League, and South American players were not required to compete in Europe. Additionally, during Maradona's time, the frequency of matches and tournaments was also less than what we see today. A common oversight among contemporary observers is the tendency to assume that the current era represents the pinnacle of football without taking into account the various contextual factors that influence the game over time.

    • @LNLBD
      @LNLBD Месяц назад

      @@TCGTales I have never said that the current era is the pinnacle of football. I just stated the fact that Messi is the only one to win everything, he was destined to do it. Maradona and Pele never won the Copa America and they never proved themselves in a big team where the expectations to win are incredibly high. Santos and Napoli were not big teams so Pele and Maradona did not face the mental pressure Messi had to face.

    • @TCGTales
      @TCGTales Месяц назад

      I wanted to clarify my previous comments, as I was not specifically addressing your views but rather the perspectives expressed by some younger commentators regarding the current state of football. It is clear that you did not claim this particular era to be the pinnacle of the sport.
      To elaborate, Pelé's absence from Copa America victories can largely be attributed to his commitments with Santos, which were focused on global tours, as well as the tournament structure and scheduling during that time. Furthermore, it is worth noting that during Pelé's career, CONMEBOL faced significant challenges, including political instability, which impacted the organization of Copa America for nearly a decade.
      This brings me to my main point: when comparing players, tournaments, and trophies across different eras, we must recognize that the significance and context of these achievements can vary substantially. For instance, the Ballon d'Or was not awarded to non-European players for several decades, highlighting some of the disparities in recognition and competition throughout football history.
      There are many examples that illustrate how the sport has evolved over time, and I believe it’s essential to consider these factors in our discussions.

    • @LNLBD
      @LNLBD Месяц назад

      @@TCGTales I agree. However, we need to have in mind that football is foremost a team sport. Pele was part of, quite probably, Brasil's greatest generation. It is important to point out that he did not took part in Brazil elimination games in the 1962 WC. Yet, Brazil managed to triumph, leg by great Garincha. On the contrary, Messi was carrying his national team. For example: out of the 8 goals Argentina scored in 2014 WC Messi was involved in 7 of them; without his crucial hattrick against Ecuador in 2017, Argentina would miss the 2018 WC; after loosing the first game against Saudi Arabia in 2022 WC, Messi scored and assisted against Mexico to keep the dream about winning a WC alive, and then he continued with goals and assists during the knockouts. His performances at the 2015, 2016 and 2021 Copa America are important as well. In short, without Pele Brazil could win trophies, but without Messi Argentina was not capable of winning trophies.

Yes, players like Kane, Giroud, Lukaku, Neymar, and Mertens have surpassed legends such as Rooney, Henry, Pelé, and Maradona in goals and assists - but does that really make them better players? Since when did goals and assists, which are often misrepresented, become the ultimate measure of greatness?
      By that flawed logic, Frank Lampard would be considered the greatest midfielder of all time simply because of his goals and assists tally. Anyone with a real grasp of the game knows how ridiculous that is. Ian Rush might have outscored Kenny Dalglish, but Dalglish’s influence, vision, and overall contribution made him the superior player. Scoring numbers alone don’t define greatness, and this is why no matter how many records Haaland breaks, he’ll never match R9's genius. Just like Andy Cole outscored Dwight Yorke, yet Yorke was the more complete player.
      If you think stats alone can measure footballing ability, then you’re missing the essence of the game. The fact that you even brought up stats when discussing someone like Diego disqualifies you from any serious conversation about football.

    People who says Maradona is better does not know football. AT ALL!. Messi's world cup career alone is FAR better than Maradona. Maradona can't even get Argentina to world cup final more than once(Twice if you count 1990 but read again what I wrote I say he got carried so he didn't 🤭). And the one time he made it to final was because of his impeccable team. Granted he is a Legend and his performance speak for itself. But he had amazing team with him. Messi almost won World cup with FAT Higuain. That alone was a miracle 😂. Four appearance by Maradona, 3 FLOP appearance by Maradona. Messi has 0 flops in 4 appearance. Yes and people act like 1986 Argentina is a weak team is a joke for me. Their squad is extremely high quality. Players like Nestor Clausen, Ricardo Giusti and Ricardo Bochini were the pillars of Independiente who won the Copa Libertadores 1984 and then defeated Liverpool in the Intercontinental Cup.
      Two midfielders Sergio Batista and Claudio Borghi are the key players of Argentinos Juniors, when this club won the Argentine championship for two consecutive years (1984, 1985), besides the Copa Libertadores title in 1985.
      Enrique, Nery Pumpido and Oscar Ruggeri and River Plate won the Copa Libertadores in 1986, just a few months after the tournament in Mexico.
      Jorge Valdano played for Real Madrid and won the La Liga 1985-1986 BEST foreign player.
      It can be said that Argentina football clubs dominated South America in those years with a pool of talents playing domestically and in Europe.

    Ok, lets make this clear. Maradona winning the league with Napoli is nothing close to even impossible. Go back and check the trend back then, ofcourse the bigger teams like milan, Juve dominated, but the title was much open to be won by many teams back then in Italy. It was not like today's where just hardly 2 or 3 teams compete for the title. Also the number of games were much lesser which makes it even more unpredictable.
    If you still have doubt go and check the list of title winners around the time Maradona won the title with Napoli, you would find teams like Hellas verona and sampdoria winning it!
    So Maradona winning it with Napoli os not something impossible. For the people in Naples it might have a nostalgia, but other than that nothing great!

Messi played his entire career on 1 of the two greatest football clubs on the planet, Maradona took last club in Italy against all odds and put them on his back. The difference between Maradona and all other players is simple: he was indispensable. Napoli would never have even glimpsed the Italian championship without Maradona. Argentina in 1986 wouldn't have made it out of the group stages without him. In 1990, Maradona wasn’t even at his peak and still managed to take Argentina to the World Cup final, finishing second. Pelé was surrounded by brilliant players. Messi, too, is surrounded by brilliant players. As for Ronaldo? Now you're not even being serious. Zinedine Zidane was crucial in 1998, but he also had a much higher standard of players around him.
    This is my point: Messi has never done, and will never do, what Maradona did. Maradona was the soul of the teams he led. He was not only a footballer but also a symbol of inspiration, a person who showed the world that one player could be the difference between success and failure, regardless of the supporting cast. This is why his accomplishments with Napoli and Argentina are even more remarkable.
    Ferrari represents soul and style, while Bugatti embodies the ultimate in performance. In that sense, Maradona can be seen as Ferrari - the soul, with his unpredictable, passionate, and magical style of play that fascinated the world. Messi, on the other hand, is like Bugatti - a technical master, almost machine-like in his precision and efficiency, reaching heights in football that surpass almost all statistical measures.
    Yet, Messi, while perfect in execution, often feels devoid of the same emotional depth Maradona possessed. Maradona wasn’t just a player; he was a man who lived fully, with all the highs and lows. He played with a fire and a heart that went beyond the game. Messi, for all his brilliance, sometimes feels more like a product - a polished creation of those who profit from him, someone who does as he is told, without the raw passion that defined Maradona. Maradona was a free man, living his life on his own terms, while Messi often seems bound by external forces.
    And here lies a deeper point: without Maradona, we might never have seen Messi. Maradona broke boundaries and showed what one individual could achieve. He inspired and changed football history, whereas Messi, as extraordinary as he is, follows in the footsteps laid by Maradona. Maradona was the first to do things in a way the world had never seen before, and that originality is what makes him timeless.

They both tackled opposing players and won the ball back which Messi never does. They have great stamina & sprint to cut off opposing passes but Messi walks around the pitch & only sprints while in possession of the ball or looking for a pass in an attacking position. He’s not capable of lifting players spirits when they go 2v0 down for example. He’s not an inspirational leader in that sense but does lift them with an audacious piece of skill or dribbling which Zidane & Maradona do also. I love watching both Messi & Cristiano Ronaldo equally but they are not the greatest complete players. They are the best goal scorers in history but there is more to football than scoring. The other two were more creative and defensive minded while still capable of taking it upon themselves to score amazing goals when their strikers drew blanks therefore more complete.

As someone who was blessed to see both of them play live for better part of their respective careers, I can say that Messi is a better player on consistency and statistics, but prime Messi could never touch prime Maradona. Not even close. Serie A during Maradona prime time was like a war zone. You did not step on the field to play. You stepped to fight. And diminutive Maradona fought like a lion for every ball, for every possession. Messi avoided fights all his career. If we put him in the Serie A of the mid 80ies, he would be eaten alive by Italian defenders who were allowed anything and everything, short of bringing the guns to the game. And unlike Messi, who was admired by everyone, including his opponents throughout his career, Maradona was despised. He was like that rat who fights for the slice of pizza in the New York subway, half expecting to be killed at every turn. Maradona statistics came as the result of him winning those fights, game after game, night after night. Meanwhile Messi often allows himself to play half asleep for most of the game, only awakening for brief moments of sheer brilliance. Brilliant player versus dirty fighter. It was never comparable; Messi played always in super teams, to win an achieve all that he achieved. Both in Barcelona and in PSG; and achieved glory in the argentian team only when they had a great squad, in the Scaloni era.
    Maradona on the contrary, never played in a super team. He was always alone, in Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Napoli and on the Argentinian team, specially 1986, when he single handedly won the world cup, in the highest level of football ever produced. Took Argentina to another world cup, this in a better team, but were his moments of brilliance that took Argentina to the final, once again.
    Maradona carried Argentina always. Argentina carried Messi to the world cup in Qatar.
    Messi never beat Brazil, Italy, England, Uruguay and Germany in 90 minutes in a World Cup. Something that Maradona could do. Single Handedly. Messi on the other hand never scored against them in world cup competition. Never even was a leader in winning agains them, never did. Messi only could beat Holland and France in penalites.
    Messi was a forward. Maradona was a midfielder who could also score, and who scored wonderful goals by the way. In this regard, Messi should be compared more to Pele.
    But even though, Maradona was much more skilled, inteligent, creative and leader than Messi ever was. Messi benefited from playing in the artificial pitches era, which allows the game to be more precise, the balls travels fast and its easy to score, if you are a good player. Its like playing billiard now.
    Also Messi benefited from softer defenses against him, and the VAR system. Maradona and Pele went down almost in every play, defenders were murderers back then, and the game and the system protected them. Messi would not have lasted in those times. You had to be a warrior, a real man.
    So, no they were never comparable, the media has been desperate to considered Messi the GOAT but he never was. Maradona never played with Rossi, with Rummenige, with Matthaus, with Van Basten, with Zico, with Baresi, with Keegan, with Platini, with Baggio to win 10 champions league and 20 league titles like Messi did, playing with the best players of the 21st century to won all that he won.
    Diego Maradona way above Messi. There were never comparable.

      Maradona had a huge ego, winner mentality and belief in his skills. Maradona played at many different teams, and each time he lifted the team way higher than their status quo (similar to CR7), where as Messi needs the team to be built around him, players like Maradona and CR7, would do it "alone". The drugs came later.
      When Maradona was head coach for Argentina some years ago, he was asked if Messi could ever become the GOAT, to which he (I think correctly) answered: "He has the gift, but lacks the will".
      Either way, they're all great
