I also use this to fit vocals into a mix. Routing all instrumental tracks to an instrumental bus, the using the match EQ option to find overlapping frequencies with the vocals. Then I just drag the overlapping ones to zero and apply a really subtle dynamic EQ for all of them (usually no more than -1 DB). Not only will it clear the mix, it also helps to show when vocals are too quiet because then this setting will be more obvious. Trackspacer is another good plug-in dedicated to this, even lets you adjust the attack and release.
Serched for this comment. lol PS: Pro MB is suited for this kind of thing much better. You can actually put the right amount of attack, release, knee and whatever on the sound source. Not just click on Auto mode.
I'll use busses for a final mix but I've never been a big 'sidechainer'. I usually already have ProQ3 on just about every instrument track already. So I just pop up the plugin on any 2 tracks and the visual graph makes is so easy to see who's battling for what space. I just look at the 2 frequency graphs and make adjustments as needed.
MB is better for this purpose and it also shows overlap. The difference is that the Q3 is limited as it has no attack - decay what is kinda essential for proper sidechaining.
I use Soothe2 for that all the time too, it’s so good! Takes me about the same amount of time to set up a side chain though, about a couple seconds for each plugin lol
@@audioedges Depends on workflow, suppose… I set the default template on Soothe2 specifically for that purpose, so it’s good to go right away - versus extra steps with ProQ of another instance on other track, setting for the visual overlap with it, manually figuring out the frequencies, and few steps to set dynamic EQ - so is significantly quicker, though perhaps wouldn’t be that big a difference if working from Soothe2 starting from scratch. Still use the dynamic on ProQ alot though as is great. Both totally replaced Trackspacer for me though, lol. 🍻
This video is literally pointing out a very basic - and very well known - function, in one of the most common EQ plugins ever . . . as if he was 'unlocking' some esoteric function only known to a select few studio wizards ! 😂 For the next video you should explain the 'secret settings' (only known to a few) that allow you to pan a track over to the left or over to the right !
@@davelordyCool point but 2500+ people who do know about panning, didn’t know about this and the video helped them. It’s a feature in the plugin but not obvious to everyone who’s starting out. Good for you for already knowing, but I’ll take helping 2500+ people find the feature over negative comments all day long ;)
I bounce back and forth between PRO Q3 - still my standard, and now Sonible’s smart EQ series. V4 let’s you do this with several tracks, does Pro Q? I never knew about this feature!
I didn't know about this little hidden gem in the ProQ3.. and I love it.. thanks!.. and by the way I've used your mixing cheatsheet and it definitely helped get me started with my mixes.
Thanks, definitely gonna use these tips. I never got into the deep of ProQ and only used it for regular EQ'ing. Being able to see the 2 frequency spectrums is gonna be really helpful for mixing.
Interestingly, Pro Q-3 doesn't have manually adjustable settings for the dynamic EQ. It's been carefully tuned and is program dependent, meaning the attack, release and knee depend on the audio, frequency range of the band and the dynamic range. So the EQ customizes itself, aiming to give a really natural and smooth compression based on the manual. Pretty useful for several applications, but if you want to get into the details of the attack and release yourself, I'd recommend going with a dedicated multiband compressor instead :)
Great question! The bus is being sent from the kick track, so we are sending the kick signal on the bus, which we then select as the sidechain trigger inside of Pro Q3 (which is on the bass track). Hope this helps :)
I know this existed, but I rarely use it since there is basically no control, and thus it often doesn’t work out as intended. No attack, release, ratio, knee, etc.
I get that, though I still find it quite useful for some easy demasking moves to tighten things up. If you’re going for a full on sidechain there are a ton of great options out there beyond this simple dynamic EQ
Nice! The video is mainly for Pro Q3 users that don’t know this feature, so if you have a different EQ that does this, that’s awesome! I believe Studio One’s stock EQ has some cool dynamic features as well.
@@audioedges this ducking of frequencies helps so much with unmasking, good to show it in one eq and it translates well. Now we have seen various unmasking tools that are selling that want to do the same thing automatically. Even some saying they are A.I. hard to mix any ore without side chain frequency ducking these days.
I'm not sure where this idea came from that the kick and bass are 'enemies'. There's no real reason to duck one for the other. That's why there are two instruments. Let them constructively interact.
bad idea, for example you can't precisely select the attack and release time here. In fact, it all depends on the context: you can always use a compressor, or a dynamic eq, or gain automation....
For sure, happy to help! Feel free to experiment with different plugins and see what sounds best for each case. I use Kickstart and Soothe2 to do this same move sometimes, but other times a quick ProQ3 sidechain does the trick! Whatever sounds best :)

Brilliant!
I use Focusrite Fast Reveal
Or soothe
Soothe is much easier. Just sidechain vocal bus to the instrument bus (not drum bus)
Agree on trackspacer, I put it in mid/side mode so it only dips out the mid signal since the vocal is mostly mid. Works a treat
Guy explained external sidechain like it was a secret.

Question from beginner: why did you sidechain to the bus instead of the kick directly???
So ylou could potentially sidechain different frequencies from other channels.
Wow … using Pro Q3 for years as standard EQ and never knew that. Thx!
Happy to help! It’s a cool buried feature
Why use a Bus instead of just sidechaining from the Kick track directly?
Had no idea this was buried in Pro Q 3, thank you! Seeing that overlap color really makes this more useful than using Pro MB.

@@tmxband Very true! Forgot about that. I've also been using ToneBoosters EQ a lot these days and its dynamic EQ does have attack and release!

I wonder how strongly this effect will fuck up any form of phase allignment one may setup between the kick & bass?

Just wondering why you use a send when you can just react directly to the kick, the send means there’s two kick signals now
This is great, that button slipped past me too, thanks for this

I've been doing this trick with various dynamic comps/EQ. However. Soothe 2 is by far the best tool for this. Not even close.
