The best thing about such videos of yours is that MAYBE even if I buy the plugin, I will always come back to your videos because of the extremely brilliant and detailed explanation of what everything does
Great video! One thing: the way you were doing dynamic EQ you were adding a straight gain/cut to the dynamic feature. If you just want straight dynamic behavior, you should put the regular gain knob at at 0. You can just create a node with gain at 0 and then press the down arrow on the bottom right of the micro HUD and select ‘Make Dynamic’ and tweak the dynamic settings.
I REALLY appreciate how in-depth this was, and how positive and impartial you were, especially considering you work for a competitor. I will definitely tune in to your other deep-dives.
that's probably the most explicative and comprehensive video about this EQ I found compared to the rest of fuffing around out there. Very simply put, exactly what I needed to get my head around it as I just got it. Thank you!
Just bought for the. iOS environment. Your presentation style is clear, concise and very easy to listen to. Made it all the way through and will rewind again and again. Thank you
I had no idea how well Fab Filter worked. Before I stumbled upon it, I was pretty much all iZotope. Now that I understand the actual dynamics and features with Fab Filter, I have the ability to shape the mix in a way that an artist can hear the potential in the instrumentals I send them instead of hearing a quiet/rough mix. When someone hears something that is sonically sound, it’s almost subconscious. Love this plugin line. Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for this in-depth tutorial review. I own Fab Filter q3 because as you mentioned, I saw it in a lot of studios and several engineers raved about its flexibility. Having purchased it, I being more of a musician masking as an engineer (ahem’) used the presets more so. Then, I’d tweak from there. Your tutorial demonstrated the many, many options of this plugin. Now, I look forward to getting comfortable with it in a more ‘customizing’ fashion. Great tutorial and .... I might say.... your speaking voice is most pleasant.
Fantastic video.I love this plugin and has been my go- to plugin. One compliment--- you have a fantastic way of speech and very nice way of explaining things. I learnt about the Piano roll which I never clicked on before, thanks for sharing the knowledge of the whole plugin.
As part of my 2020 studio refurb (and decluttering effort !) decided on minimising plugins in Logic Pro X - will be using Fabfilter Pro Q3 as my main EQ so this was really helpful :-)
Just bought this plugin this week. Learned most of the features by just playing around, but there is simply SO much to this one plugin that I felt watching this video was definitely warranted. I learned a lot; thanks so much! This plugin is truly amazing IMHO. It's almost a plugin "suite" rather than just a single EQ. I'm very impressed so far and it's already changing my workflow after two mixing sessions.
Geoff, I have been using FabFilter plugins for years but came here to see if I would learn something new... I am always searching for knowledge. I learned a few things I had never noticed previously, kind of like you did during the tutorial. Thank you for your time. I have been working in music production for over 30 years now.
This is incredibly concise and thorough. Your knowledge clearly shows and your ability to explain made it easy for me, a beginner who had a very general idea of EQing, to be marveled by the possibilities in mixing/mastering - and of course, understand the feature of Fab Filter Pro Q3. Super engaging and helpful, thank you for this!
Thanks so much for doing that. I bought Q3 (for iPad) a couple of days ago and have been staring at it not knowing how to start ever since! You have completely demystified it for me. Now I need to rework my workflow as I am sure many of these features done earlier in the mix process will save a huge amount of time. It also looks to me like dynamic EQ is going to be a winner on most things but I guess it needs practice and a very good ear.
Don’t touch the lighting bro! It’s perfect Geoff! You got it nailed! Voice over sounds like honey. I could listen for days. Thanks for your time as always. You know Crave DSP? It’s my Personal FabFilter.
Great video! I own this plugin but have only scratched the surface. This video seems to display the power of this plug. Can’t wait to dig in. Many thanks!
Thank you for the great video! It was very helpful. I own this plugin and some other fabfilter plugins. They’re all very useful and I like the way they sound. They also all have lots of functions that sometimes take me a while to discover because, in the interest of time, I grab for tools that I think might impart something helpful quickly or I’ll grab for something that I’m very familiar with. During my downtime I jump on RUclips to dive deeper into the products I use, things I’m considering for purchase, or just to gain more knowledge. It’s nice to collect all the latest (virtual) gear we can get our hands on, but it’s even nicer to be really good at using things we already have. I think it can be more effective and it’s definitely much cheaper. Thanks again for the video. You got me where I needed to go with this EQ. I can see why my friends swear by it and now I can take better advantage of it. Best wishes - Tim
Thanks Geoff, super useful video! I upgraded to Q3 from Q2 when it came out as I loved (and still do) the additional features. Like with most things, you have to allocate some learning time to get the most out of your plug-ins and videos like yours help to focus the mind on what is actually possible. I've got better at allowing time for CPD to improve my workflow. I started with getting to know my DAW's full capabilities and then really started noticing the difference to my time management. I think that coming from an old school studio set up had me using the DAW as a glorified tape machine! It's far easier to think inside the box, so to speak. Going back to using the Fabfilter Q3, I love it, but I also own and use Waves F6, which I like to use for side-chaining a vocal over a mix. I also own the Fabfilter Pro-MB which begs the question here...when would you use Dynamic EQ over Multi-band compression? I'd be interested to hear what others do...😎
Great question. Typically, dynamic EQ, if at all, happens on a track level, at least for me. Dynamic compression happens, again if at all, on a master level. Dynamic behaviour in EQ nodes is something I consider to be more of a bell/whistle than a core tool I'd use 90% of mixing or mastering. Same is true of Mid/side stuff, exciters, saturators, etc. Fun toys, but not things I need to survive.
@@ManchesterMusic : Couldn't agree with you more, Jeff. Imho, the #3 best and necessary EQ tool is a clean, well-designed, reliable, and trustworthy HW or SW EQ; the #2 best and necessary EQ tool is a mixing & mastering *engineer's ears*; and the #1 best and necessary EQ tool is *the tool between a mixing & mastering engineer's ears*. All of the latest-and-greatest UI, AI/ML or fixed circuits/algorithms, and boatloads of features and capabilities are often very helpful for assistance in finding/experimenting with (and sometimes mitigating/adding) EQ issues/coloring, however a *solid* and *proven* SW plug or HW module will *always* be the very last thing in my processing chain. Great demo and review. Over a year old, and is still spot on and helpful. Thank you for sharing your observations, thoughts, and suggestions.
I just grabbed this plugin tonight. I read the whole manual a while back prior to buying and realized I pretty much forgot it all! Had some fun messing around before watching your video, but you answered quite a lot of questions. Thanks
Excellent overview which prompted me to try out FabFilter Pro Q3, currently on sale for US$135. I really like the interface. However, iZotope is telling me that I can have Nectar 3 and the Advanced versions of Neutron 3 and Ozone 9 as a package for another $65, so I checked those out too. If Pro Q3 was the only that could be resized, I’d buy it, but iZotope’s new versions also offer resizing. On EQ, I don’t think that there’s a significant functional difference. I’ll decide before the 4th, when Fabfilter’s sale ends, but the iZotope offer is pretty attractive. You’ve complicated my life, and I hold you responsible for upcoming damage to my pocketbook, but thanks anyway :)
Hahaha. Thanks for commenting Rory, nice to see you here again. FWIW: Fabfilter offers more bands to play with (24 vs Neutron’s 12) and Fabfilter has a more sophisticated M/S + L/R channel node functionality. That being said, I’ve never needed to use more than 8 bands on any given track and I’m seldom needing to reach for MS/LR nose, stereo is all I usually needed. Outside of that the only significant difference is all the smart tech in iZotope’s stuff which Fabfilter can’t offer.
It's kind of unreal that the mere fact of a plug-in being resizable is a feature (basically something that literally every other app on your computer can do by default).
I bought ProQ3 about a year ago and it became my go-to EQ immediately. It's very transparent, so I use it all the time except if I specifically want to have a coloring plugin instead. This is one of the best demonstrations I've seen. I learned something new here so thanks - subscribed :-) I'd like to highlight one feature you sort of mentioned but not really. You can trigger the dynamic behavior also with external side chain, so for example classic bass ducking with kick is a snap. Unfortunately you're limited to one side chain, would be handy to be able to side chain separate nodes with different sources. Another thing is the A/B. It's not for quick defaulting, you can obviously have different curves on each slot. This is true to every plugin with A/B function I've seen so far. I'd like to see 4 slots here.
I use Reaper, and now I use the stock plugins, more than ever. Yes, they look like they were made in DOS, but they sound great.Try looking into them. Maybe you´d be surprised of how great they sound.
Thank you so much for uploading this video. It is invaluable for those of us who have to think four or five times before spending this sort of money. This in depth tutorial is much more useful than just a few minutes from a reviewer.
13:57 ,, why am I sitting on the top of my chair, with popcorn in my hand, with my face in my screen, getting the feeling this is the most exciting movie I've ever seen... :O
Fantastic video. Everything was very well explained with good examples and your tone and approach was engaging and easy to follow. I have wasted so much time trying to get a good mix with other EQs and I think this will save me an immense amount of time and create better mixes. Thank you!
The only proper Fabfilter Pro Q3 settings for any track with the revolting i-min, bVI, bIII, V chord progression is: 1. Leave all frequency bands at null. 2. Reduce output to lowest possible setting. 3. Take computer to Lampung and drop it into Krakatoa.
Excellent detailed breakdown of the features. Succinct and really useful. I have this plugin and I am just getting to know it. If you could do something around Side-Chaining - that would be useful to me. I got a hint of what it might be from your video but would like to understand it more.

I'll rewatch while I have it loaded in my DAW to try out the different elements as you do, as it will give me a much better idea of what all these actually do. Very clear and concise, many thanks 😊
That you can have mid, side, left, right nodes on same graph is cool. In izotope you can have either left/right or mid/side, but not both. And they're on 2 different tabs. That's one of things they need to improve.
Thanks much! One of the better and more detailed explanation of this EQ plugin on Da Tube. Fabs site is great also but the guy explains like he going out the door : ( Keep up the great work : )
Nicely done. Use both Neutron and FFPQ3 (even the abbreviation is long) on both music and for spoken word (sometimes yelled) in videos and podcasts. My last several RUclips vids are running through a FF in Adobe Premiere. What makes it compelling is that its UI inspires creativity. It's beautiful, stuff is going on, it actually changes things, and like your experience of making the low end into thunder, it becomes part of the composition. Which is a joy.
9:19 Looks like it’s shifting directly under the frequency you’ve selected, so that doesn’t seems so bad. In other words in not just randomly moving. 11:15 I always wished that those little keyboards would actually play a note. Good for ear training and freq finding 18:15 Basically a life saving mix technique...LOVE IT !!!
Intriguing walk through of an incredible plug-in! Albeit the fact that proq3 can be used and leveraged to its exhaust in a music production/mastering scenario, it does have its pertinence in the content creation/podcast/voice over world. Unfortunately for this part of the world, detailed walkthroughs on RUclips made explicitly for content creators/voice/dialogue is sparse (to say the least). It will be great to see you cover the focused-versatility of proq3 …exclusively for voice!
Excellent. I’m using Pro Q3 on an iPad in Auria Pro. I’ve discovered these features already but didn’t understand them properly. So your demo has really helped give me more insight into what this thing can do. Thank you 👍
Yo Jeff i gotta say man you did a great job on this review. Crystal clear and straight to the point! I've learned so much from this video. Keep rocking!!! God bless you
Wow, thanks for the amazingly informative video on Q3! I’ve used Q2 for over a year, and just recently upgraded to Q3. Your explanation of the UI was great, and I even learned some new tricks. I wish you would do a similar video for all of the Fabfilter plugins 😊 Thanks for your effort on this video.
I would like Fabfilter to create a plug in with only two buttons on it: 1. Compose, Produce and Distribute button (Which could be called CPD button), and 2. Collect The Loyalty button.
This was an *excellent* plugin review. Seriously thorough and well thought out. I would think of something I wanted covered and you'd cover it! My only suggestion would be to de-ess your mic vocals, cause they were a bit sharp and made listening at a level where i could hear everything else clearly, somewhat uncomfortable. But still, seriously appreciated this video!!! New subscriber, hands down.
SUPER great review, thank you for having “normal music”, for having a great balance between you and the music, for NOT being over the top and all ‘schtick’. You’re the best. Just curious at 22:48 why you touted the EQ match as something so great but then decided not to do a quick example. Thanks again, Steve
Thanks for the video! I have a bundle of fabfilter plungins that includes the Pro Q3. I really like the sound of this EQ. In my opinion fabfilter makes powerful and nice sounding plugins and their GUIs are elegant.
100K views. Wow. Ok guys what plugin should I review next? Comment below!
Gullfoss By Soundtheory? its a dynamic eq controlled by some kind of Artificial intelligence.
808 thing already did a video on it! Check my previous ones!
Vocal finalizer , please .
You should be yelling about Spotify stealing everyone’s music
You don’t create the music for pennies
You shouldn’t be paid in pennies
ovox or schepps omnichannel
This was subtly the best pro-Q tutorial I have seen thus far
Thank you baby
How was it subtle? It was an in depth 30 minute tutorial.
Its gorgeous too. It's insane how much the GUI matters when you spend a while looking at it. Fan filter is soft on the eyes for sure.

I got all the FabFilter Plugs, and i can only reccomend them. The Multiband-Comp and the Saturation/Distortion is killer too. Hats off to FabFilter :)
Best plugins out there.

I love this eq, it's so versatile it's crazy... And the dynamic feature of it is just THE best thing around...

The finest introductory look at FABQ3 I've seen, great work, clear and concise.
As part of my 2020 studio refurb (and decluttering effort !) decided on minimising plugins in Logic Pro X - will be using Fabfilter Pro Q3 as my main EQ so this was really helpful :-)
This is a really good option for sure ! I'm working with just a Neve channelstrip and build a analog console emulation into my logic Pro X
Your Neutron 3 demo with Mitch Gallagher a couple years ago remains stellar. You were generous doing this vid.
Thanks dude. Very kind of you to remember and leave a comment.

(4:25) If you double click, it'll add a LP/HP, depending on the frequency you're at.
that's exactly what i was thinking watching him doing click and move. Double click for god sake!
"100K views. Wow. " - why ? Because that tut IS REALY ONE of the best about Q3 ! You are real Teacher. GOD bless You !
Geoff, I have been using FabFilter plugins for years but came here to see if I would learn something new... I am always searching for knowledge. The plugin Is the tool, but Geoff you are the artist of eq! Freaking amazing producer

my pleasure!
Man now I’m ready to make music. Thank you I’ll come back to say another thank you again
I don't post many comments, but this, sir, is clear, concise and brilliant. Thank you for the demystification.
Thanks that was a great intro, I’ve been drooling over this unit for a long time but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.
Is it worth is or does parametric eq do the same thing?
TNice tutorials is absolutly the best video of the world you expaining skills are good and it was a honor to see tNice tutorials vid well done
Fabfilter Pro Q3 is the best EQ on the market.
Thank you for the great video! It was very helpful. I own this plugin and some other fabfilter plugins. They’re all very useful and I like the way they sound. Thanks again for the video. You got me where I needed to go with this EQ. I can see why my friends swear by it and now I can take better advantage of it.
Best wishes - Tim
Thanks. I do own this plugin and appreciate all that you pointed out. I will put this to work right away.
i have no idea why, but hearing your voice just makes feel soothed.
Beautifully explained! Looking to upgrade to the ProQ3. Thanks
Got it yesterday. It rules. And your overview was excellent, well done.

Great review! The Piano Roll at 11:00 is useful as long as you're working in the A=440Hz tuning. Would be great if the roll were tunable.

Thanks dude!!

9:19 Looks like it’s shifting directly under the frequency you’ve selected, so that doesn’t seems so bad. In other words in not just randomly moving.
11:15 I always wished that those little keyboards would actually play a note. Good for ear training and freq finding
18:15 Basically a life saving mix technique...LOVE IT !!!
Thank you 👍
wow..hobby iPad devices can be used for audio now with plugins? that's cool.
Great video Geoff. I enjoyed it and learnt a lot. Your style is getting much better. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Yo Jeff i gotta say man you did a great job on this review. Crystal clear and straight to the point! I've learned so much from this video. Keep rocking!!! God bless you
That is the most effectiv eq i've ever saw! 👍
This was an excellent tutorial! Thanks again for your work!
15:32 i have been using it for several years but i really did not know that ! great video... Thanks and greetings from Berlin
I own neutron, and I've used pro Q, and to be completely honest I like both.
Excellent overview of this plug in which I have had for a while but didn't delve so deeply. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
I would like Fabfilter to create a plug in with only two buttons on it: 1. Compose, Produce and Distribute button (Which could be called CPD button), and 2. Collect The Loyalty button.
thank you for that very detailed lookthrough! never thought I would watch the whole video :D haha. btw listening to your voice is relaxing
cheers!
Probably the best Q3 tutorial out there!
Loooool fully expected this guy to have a mancunian accent but it's just his name. Great vid also.
Great video!
Very clearly explained!
Very comprehensive!
Thanks for the kind words Steve.
I didn’t have a decent track on hand to show off the EQ matching so I opted not to demonstrate its functionality.
Sounds reasonable enough ! Did you catch my previous comment (about the 9:19 phenomenon)?
Cheers
I literally googled this question word by word, and you answered it perfectly. Thanks
Lol.
Thanks for your good and transparent explanation
Thanks for the video! I have a bundle of fabfilter plungins that includes the Pro Q3. I really like the sound of this EQ. In my opinion fabfilter makes powerful and nice sounding plugins and their GUIs are elegant.
Thank you. This has been the best video tutorial on fabfilter Pro Q3. 👍🏻
thank u so much. almost every doubt cleared on this plugin. Now only i can actually use it. ❤
Thanks for the Video. I just go Pro Q3 and this tutorial was very helpful.
Great review answered everything I was wondering about the plug in 🙏🏼
