      That's normal. I used to pump all the knobs all the way up thinking that must do the trick, ending up with basically 20db of extra gain, with the threshold being at 0db, and then turning the fader 20db down :D

    You managed to talk about the compressor without actually using it for 45 minutes and made it super interesting. It's impressive to say the least. Usually I can't get through tutorials that easily because most are boring, this one is full of info, which is rare in RUclips tutorials. It's a great tutorial about compression generally not just about Pro C2. Great work!

    This was so insightful and at times funny, a pleasure to sit through. I'm short of 15 years in audio production and just now starting to notice some less obvious but I would argue, more important things in mixing and in nature of sound. It feels like learning a new language in a short period of time. Engineers and producers, don't get lazy and put your optimum self into your work, don't be on autopilot, always strive for more knowledge.

    Hi Daniel. This is a superb tutorial! A big thank you. I'm watching it the fourth time.
    One small thing is unclear. You say, "Once the threshold is exceeded, then the attack time is the amount of time it takes for the gain reduction to start to kick in." There are engineers who say that compression kicks in as soon as the threshold is crossed, and the attack time is the time it takes for the gain reduction to reach its full power. All the best!

    • @ezrashanti
      @ezrashanti 4 года назад

      I believe you are correct. It's not like a predelay on a reverb. Attack is how long it takes to get from 1:1 to the full ratio I guess, but I'm not 100% confident. Maybe the instructor will chime in and clarify.

    Hey thanks for the tutorial! One explanation in this video could be missunderstood: the attack time is the time it takes for the signal to become fully compressed after exceeding the threshold level. Meaning the Compressor actually starts compressing immediately when the threshold is reached, independent of the attack time. And once the compression has started it takes the set attack time value to reach the final compression value, set by the ratio.

I mix very multilayered Uplifting Trance music & i was thinking, if the 2nd thing after the Synth i always put in into the signal chain is a Compressor, then maby i need to check out alternatives to Ableton´s own compressor... If you wanna make something right, you often have to get to the very Core of the issue right? Thank You! :)

    Excellent run-through of one of the great compressors. I think Pro-C gets less credit than it's due because the interface doesn't look like a 3 rack monster. Interestingly. when I analysed the styles, "Clean" actually introduced more harmonics than any other setting. The Vocal setting. 39:23, is really intriguing as well. I don't know what they did with the math, but it has a surprisingly useful and characteristic sound. Explore your FabFilter plugins, folks! I'd been using the de-breather in Nectar 2 for years because it was the only plugin I could trust to de-breath long-form narration without problems. Little did I know, the Vocal setting in Pro-G is probably the smartest de-breather ever made. I just didn't know it. Each FabFilter plug needs at least 3 hours of video to unveil the hidden gems.

    I agree 100% about pro-c2
    It's the best "clean", general duty compressor, period. But like any other fabfilter plugin, you really have to immerse yourself in it and dedicate yourself to learning its ins and outs. Otherwise, you're just not getting the full value of the plugin. Every once in awhile something will come up and i'll remember "that's right! i could get that done in 2 minutes with pro-c/pro-mb/saturn/whichever plugin". Each one of their plugins could take the place of an entire chain if used to their full capacity.

    At 1:01:17 you hear the difference between the compressed and the uncompressed kick sound.
    The compressed signal seems to sound "better" - (like there's "put some energy in the sound" but i guess it's just because it is louder.
    The channel meter shows that the peak level is much higher when the compressor is on. The auto gain - button seems not to work properly in this case.
    Correct me if it's wrong, but i suggest you can't evaluate the influence of the compression itself on the sound, because you hear just the increase of the signal level. And we know that the louder signal allways sound better.
    ... or have i missed something? Can anyone help me?

    43:25 hysteresis actually is referring to the present state's dependency on the previous state. In terms of a compressor, the circuit topology inside relies on magnetic components (transformers, inductors, chokes, etc.), and each of these has hysteresis curves. In the topology you were describing, the output characteristics of that compressor will be heavily dependent on its previous interactions with transients.
