      I feel sorry for the people who have no idea who Steve Marriott was. The guy was like 5'4" but he had a voice that could cause earthquakes. He did this song with Small Faces (titled as You Need Lovin') in 1966 and when Zep came along and covered it three years later, Robert Plant - I hate to say it - basically mimicked Marriott's vocals. Zeppelin's version became more popular though, thanks mainly to Jimmy Page rewriting all the music, and nowadays people have no idea who Marriott was.

    The part in the middle is psychedelic rock. Orgasmic moaning during the song and he sings "Let me be your back door man" near the end. Not the same connotation as it has today, it's an old blues term meaning a man exiting through the back door before the woman's husband comes home.

      When I listened to Three dog Night, Elton, Grand Funk etc. I got the exact same sound at their concerts, because thy weren't overproduced. As an example, you might get this, Elton and company didn't like the way Benny and the Jets sounded, but it was a Double Album so they needed to keep it, so they added in "CROWD NOISE" overproduced the sound, etc. and he rarely sings it live because it just doesn't sound the same. True story: I went on a fishing trip with my Dad and his business friends in Northern Minnesota in early 1970. Returning home we all stopped at a small diner, sat in a booth and ordered coffee. It was near midnight. I was in my early 20's and LOVED Led Zeppelin. The diner had a juke box with some old country songs playing. Of course, I had to select "Whole Lotta Love". After a nice country ballad had finished - my song started. There were perhaps another dozen old fisherman in that diner. ALL EYES WENT TO ME when the song began! I sunk down in my chair a bit but I still enjoyed the music. My dad and all the others - not so much. :)

      "Stairway to Heaven" probably was there most well known hit. But, if you ask me what their best album was I have to agree that their first album was the best.

    • @oregonchick76

      I was going to say something like this! "Stairway" is perhaps their most iconic song, but "When the Levee Breaks" just knocks me on my rear every time I hear it. And honestly, other songs like "Black Dog" or "Misty Mountain Hop" have that same iconic LZ feeling that "Stairway" does, as far as I'm concerned. Plus there's the crazy melodramatic OTT-ness of "Kashmir" and "Immigrant Song" that are definitely worth doing reactions about.

    • @katk6802
      @katk6802 2 года назад +4

      Oh hell yes. When the Levee breaks played on a jukebox in Memphis during Katrina and I about lost my damn mind, just crying. This song was actually a cover song, originally by Memphis Minnie in the 40s? It’s a blues song talking bout the great floods in early 20th century west Tennessee & Mississippi share croppers and poor folks fled or risk dying or starving to death. They saying they gotta go to Chicago for work, etc. also check out the the LED Zepperella ALL FEMALE cover band. They only do led songs and they kick ass.

Then he said, "Listen, you can hear him now." John turned his head a bit, then after a brief moment, declared, "That sounds just like Keith Moon!". I don’t think there will ever be another era in rock/pop music as unique and all encompassing as the 1970’s. It was the era of the singer/songwriter, of male and female solo artists, of duos, and of groups. The sheer amount of talented artists from that decade was phenomenal. It was hit after hit…and the hits just kept coming. And yet, though that decade had a fair share of “one hit wonders”, those also added to the richness of the outstanding musical landscape. Cheers!

It's quite funny that as a brit I wod know this tune, even if I was one of those middle of the road type people who scorned heavy metal, and then watched the chart show, Top of the Pops, that Led Zep wouldn't appear on, and listened lovingly to the theme music for the program which of course was A Whole Lotta Love.
