- This is the original version of the ride, before they dumbed it down with a happy-go-lucky song in a misguided attempt to turn it into another Small World.
There has never been a ride quite like this one, with such a large cast of fully-articulated animatronics going about their business in such a way as to make each scene feel vibrant and alive, richly detailed settings spanning the globe, and an incomparable musical score perfectly lending itself to the ride's existential conclusion, all of which combine to leave you feeling like you've just returned from your own amazing voyage.

This version is so much better...more mysterious and kept to the authentic story...instead of an annoying musical version!
i do agree that this version is a lot more textbook to the actual story, but give a little bit of thought - this is suppose to be a Disney ride, a ride meant for children. i think the lack of music and the overall darker undertone probably frightened younger children, which is most likely the direct cause as to why they renovated the ride.
i guess... but i really like the music though... i also like mysterious stories and generally when it's kept authentic but there is also something very wholesome about the musical version... i still remember how it was getting late with the sun setting and we already did all the action based rides and we kinda wandered through the mermaid lagoon and arabian coast and went on the sinbad ride... it was such a nice atmosphere...
So you think cute little chibi animatronic figures are perfect for a scary, mysterious ride that scares kids?
There’s a clear disconnect that the new version fixed. There’s a reason the new one is popular while this version tanked, as cool as it was
@@Raypunzel Eh, it was basically just as popular. The new one is never above a 5 minute wait either. That's partially due to it having a very high guest capacity.
I personally think the only scene they needed to change entirely was the monkey one. They could have kept the others mostly the same while integrating Chandu and the song into portions of the ride. That way it'd be a more balanced portrayal; They went from one extreme to the other.

These animatronics move so fluidly it's hard to believe they aren't CGI. Just look at how much expression Sindbad has at 2:25. They seriously feel on par with some more modern figures. I don't know if it's because they're newer at the time of this recording or if the art style of the dolls leaves a lot of room for movement, but these are honestly gorgeous. Shame I never got to see this version but I'm happy I had the opportunity to visit at all.
the crazyest thing is the fact that they were not even made by disney but by an entertainment company that closed in 2003 Avg entertainment, they were the garner holt equivalent back then...
I understand why they made most of the changes as young children found them scary, but I find the change to the whale rather interesting, because while it was a little scary, I would argue that Monsto in Pinocchio’s Journey, which was also in Tokyo Disneyland, to be way scarier.

This is really interesting! I personally love the new version because i love the song and the addition of chandu, but it’s cool to see this version too. I really hope sinbad sticks around for a long time as every time i’ve been it has been a walk on :/

Monkey scene was just terrifying
I would love this version of the ride as a pre-teen and older but not younger since this is the type of scary noisy dark ride my family forced me to ride as a tradition with my older siblings. I remember I always closed my eyes, put my hands over my ears and sometimes chew on something during the whole ride.

the movement of the animatronics is almost too fluid. It makes me uncomfortable. It's like if a stop motion movie came to life.
That said, this ride looks amazing and I wish I could have ridden it
I'd like to think the original version was really inspired by the Fata Morgana attraction at the Dutch theme park Efteling. Has so much of the same vibe going on.
I was thinking the same thing! Fata Morgana is such an interesting ride; a lot of Efteling's dark rides are very surreal and dream-like.

I went to Tokyo Disney a few times from 2001-2005. I was SO confused when I visited recently. I'm with you man, this one was way better.

I like the original one but the new one has this song that stays in your head for days. I learned that Alan Menken made that's why.

There are 2 Sinbad rides in East Asia. One is from Tokyo DisneySea Japan, and the other is from Seoul Lotteworld South Korea.

これは可愛らしい人形なのでリニューアルしたストーリーが合ってると思いました。
It was changed because the guests thought it was too scary and dark. It's like you guys forget that Disney is a family park.
I think also the issue is that Disney Sea doesn’t have as many attractions or variety as Tokyo Disney land, especially at the time. It’s not like there was a Peter pans flight or Winnie the Pooh around the corner. Imagine brining a very young child whose scared of this ride and see there’s not much in the way of other kids fare as alternative at the park. Nowadays, there’s more for sure but at the time, I understand the change (also, their looks make it seem more child friendly at a glance, so having it be so true to the original and so dark was a little off (and remember, it may not seem too scary here but in real life, those are HUGE animatronics moving very convincingly and you’re forced to look at them for a while with tense music. I honestly woulda been a little frightened as a kid of the new one even just on account of the scale, and the song does a LOT to remedy the tone, helped by the fact that it’s a BANGER that fills the more Disney like gap the Sea lacks a bit (it’s a great theme park but it’s decidedly less Disney feeling (or was for a bit there) than Disneyland

This version is so much better than the new one...definitely creepy monkey scene...I love it
I have seen both versions. The old in 2003, and the new in 2011. I like the new version FAR better!

I like both versions for different reasons.
The original version here is more accurate to the original stories, and it feels more like an adventure!
The new version just emanates that Disney charm, including having a beautiful song as its soundtrack.
I'd love to see a story that combines the best of the two versions.

This version is definitely the weaker one.
I prefer this version. It was scarier, and I love horror things. Especially on a kids ride.
How many times did you ride this to get all those camera angles?
I think just two trips for most of the video, except for the close-up shots of the two dogs, which I took my third time...
So glad we got the current version. This one is nice but has none of that Disney charm. The music with everyone singing along is just amazing in the new one!

I agree! The music is amazing, and I hate that it might be lost to history. I don't think it was composed by Menken, but I've never been able to find out who wrote it...
I don't mean to be that guy, but that wasn't 7 Voyages. At best, it was 5.

I get that it’s pretty intense and needless to say I would be scared if I rode this as a kid
While I’m all for toning it down for young audiences the massive 180 refurbishment was just not the answer
I love Allen menkin and all but that song was annoyingly repetitive and the overall experience was pandering
Besides when considering my own personal childhood fears I can almost safely tell you that children won’t likely be terrified of the nature of the animatronics but the size. The gigantic animatronics regardless of whether or not the characters they represent are friendly were unsettling to me as a child
I get you, but at the same time, it isn't just the song that makes the new one interesting. It's the fact that everything, audio wise, happens on it's own speaker. Anamatronics have isolated vocal tracks, the instrument playing anamatronics actually have recordings of those instruments joining in, and then due to the isolated vocals the orchestra absolutely surrounds you.
