DeLorean ABANDONED in Anchorage, Alaska!

- I learned about this abandoned DeLorean and, being a huge fan of Back to the Future, stopped by for a closer look during a trip to Alaska. It’s been parked in this spot for more than 15 years (according to locals and Google Street View) and has a thick layer of dust inside. The back end is on blocks and the front tires are flat. A sticker in the windshield reads 5/2002. No sign of a flux capacitor...

Chris Luckhardt has documented and photographed some of the most iconic and viral images of abandoned places around the world. He was among the first photographers to publish photos in the press from legendary abandoned places like Hashima Island, Nara Dreamland, Michigan Central Station, and Six Flags New Orleans. His body of work has led to interviews and collaborations with The White House, Netflix, Ford, GQ China, ABC News, Good Morning America, Scholastic Canada, Yahoo Japan, and many more. In 2016, the Obama administration invited Chris to photograph a private citizen "haunted" tour of The White House.

That glimpse of the engine bay, I can see the coolant hose is routed around the AC compressor. So not only is it an early VIN ‘81 car (by the hood gas’s flap), but it’s a SUPER early VIN before they re designed the coolant layout.
PS, greeting from VIN 4693 👋
Nice! Your comment is exactly why I poked my camera in there as much as I could. I figured owners/enthusiasts would want to see those details.
@@chrisluckhardt You'd be surprised what little idiosyncrasies owners are able to pickup on. Its how we tell our cars apart 😂 For a hand-built, mass-produced car, its flaws make it so enduring and personable.
For example, early cars had a windshield radio antenna embedded in the glass. But users were reporting bad radio reception, so as the factory got word from dealers, they drilled a hole in the front fender and mounted a whiplash antenna. John DeLorean himself reportedly found out when a new batch reached dealers and found the dealers even mounting them in the cars before they would go on sale! John phoned the factory, told them it was fugly, and they decided to source a popup antenna in the rear of the car. Dealers soon got the notice and started using those. 3 whole antenna changes in the same model year of 1981 lol!
My car should have the popup antenna, but it has the windshield antenna AND the rear one! TWO radio antennas 😂 So either the dealership that sold my car retro fitted it as a recall later on, or (this is HIGHLY possible) someone at the factory floor just grabbed whatever windshield glass he had on hand and moved along lol. I'm thinking of wiring my radio to the front, I personally love the look of no popup antenna and keeping the lines on the car straight.

Amazing. Seasons change, years pass, eras come & go, but this DeLorean has been here through so much of it. Bless his widow for defying time and holding onto it.
And before it moved to Asia Garden it sat at the Big Timber Motel on 5th Avenue for about a decade or so.
Several sources tell me it's been at Asian Garden since 2007. And it appears in Google Street View in the same spot in every image dating back to 2007. The owner died in 2004 so it's possible the car was elsewhere during the gap?
This likely belonged to a serviceman in the Army and it was their "base toy". Problem being DeLoreans are not friendly and do not like to be left sitting for months and years untouched. Also Alaska is the most inhospitable place for a DeLorean you could ever have.
It was owned by a Marine who married a Taiwanese. They relocated to Alaska in the 1970s after his time stationed in Taiwan during the Vietnam War.
Huh, how strange. That would make an intriguing story. @@chrisluckhardt
@@MrWolfSnack I’m working on a blog post that includes all those details and more! I’ll share a link here sometime soon.
Have u sold ur delorean?
Well one thing we know is it's never going to rust. It's there for eternity
Leo! Welcome! We last crossed paths on a KISS video...
First! And I live in anchorage! I see this car fairly often
Can you recall how long it’s been on blocks? Street View’s earliest image is from 2007 and it’s difficult to see detail.
@@chrisluckhardt about 10 years, I'd say
I was stationed up there at elmendorf from 2000-2007 where exactly is this at? I never remember seeing it when it lived up there. I used to live on boniface and northern lights (greenbrier apartments) then a house not far from there.
Echoes of a past life and glory. I have those in my own life now. So sad to see it wasting away and not cared for. Amazing that it originated all the way in Northern Ireland and ended up there.
Awesome! Hope there is a chance that you put me in contact with the lady... Amazing car, amazing story, thanks for sharing!
Unconfirmed: I heard a few people have reached out to her but couldn't reach an agreement.
@@chrisluckhardt let me try! If you could just get me in touch I would appreciate it! Thanks in advance!
You’ll need to find the contact info because I don’t have it or even know if the story about a widow is real.
@@chrisluckhardt the story that I heard is that the husband took his own life in that car and I heard that years ago. That car has been there for many years now.
@@907akfshrmn It's the first time I've that version of the story. Very sad if it's true.
I was stationed in anchorage (elmendorf AFB) 2000-2008. Where exactly did you find it? I would have tried to buy the thing if I could figure it out while it was up there lol always wanted one.
It's just a little north of Dimond Center Mall.
@@chrisluckhardt Geez my memory must be going to hell I brought it up to my wife and she just said the same thing. Apparently I made the comment about finding out who owned it to try to buy the thing way back then but forgot all about it lol.
All these years and nobody wants to save it? Such a shame that it's going to rust into a pile.
One story I heard is that a few DeLorean enthusiasts tried to contact the owner with no luck. Another story I heard is the owner's asking price is way above market value. All unconfirmed.
@@chrisluckhardt I have seen a lot of old cars with the same issue.... unrealistic asking price. If someone could get it for a reasonable price it would be gone.
@@dgilroy26 I can understand that mindset. I have a vintage guitar with an immovable asking price. I'd rather wait for a price match than give it up.
@@chrisluckhardt What guitar would that be?
@@TheRealXira It’s an early era Joe Satriani Ibanez.
No surprise the road traffic keeps driving past it without stopping.
The car IS pretty easy to miss. But I’m sure locals are as accustomed to seeing the car there now as they are seeing the trees beside it and just ignore it.
Doc left that DeLorean for Marty to find so he can go Back To The Future once again! Lol 😂 Poor DeLorean hope it found a new home and got fixed up.
According to the laws of sci-fi, it's entirely possible this DeLorean is active and fly/driving everywhere - but we just see it sitting here. 🤔😂

Hay que salvarlo!
Love the story behind this. Here from Tiky Toky
@@HBJFishing I was amazed when I learned all the details of the car’s history. Quite a touching story.
Marty McFly and Doc Brown should save it all it needs is a new Flux Capacitor
Will u go China again?
Yes! I have plans to go back to China for more exploring with new connections there!
