@cjmesq: I hope you don't mind my long nod to your comment. I wasn't much older than you when I saw it in the late 60s in an open-air summer cinema in Cairo, Egypt of all places. Comedy is a great "uniter" in this world and cuts across all cultures. The theater was packed, probably with many 2nd timers, and I recall so much laughter erupting. Those were wonderful and simpler times when Hollywood was worth opening our wallets. Since then I've seen it 3 or 4 more times.

It was funny, chaotic, ridiculous and sheer brilliance. I must have watched this 3hr long movie 20 times, at least 20 times.
Never been anything like it since.

She was sexy (at 28/29, when filmed between Apr. 26-Dec. 7 [expected end date] in 1962; but it took longer, exact date not known) in that black bikini, dancing to try to entice Sylvester Marcus to mess around with her, instead of sitting on the floor drinking a can of beer!

What obsesses the Academy to honor mediocre films and acting that are forgotten in under a decade, when as soon as this film was released, it was understood to be a classic? I saw Mad World first run at the Teck Theater ib Buffalo. The Teck was one of the original 3-projector Cinerama theaters. Mad World was advertised as filmed in single-frame Cinerama, but was really filmed through wide screen lenses that distorted the image in a way that would look right when projected onto a deeply-curved Cinerama screen. That limited the distribution, so it was reformatted to flat screen for general distribution. That was also done to the 3-frame original Cinetrama movies like How the West Was Won. I've actually seen HTWWW on TV. The seam between the 3 fused images was barely visible.
