    Though I was only a child in ‘59, I recall the deaths of Alfalfa Switzer and George Reeves, who were, in a sense, part of my life back then, and vaguely remember hearing about three rock and roll musicians who died in a plane crash. Hard to believe - over 60 years ago!

    As Vince Gargiulo brings us into the 1950s, we are going to see, like in this video, more and more people who were born in the 1860s, 1870s, 1880s and the 1890s. For us living in 2024 (and thereafter), getting to see this will be an interesting way of traveling in time.

    1959 was the year my Dad was born and have seen a few Errol Flynn films and remember when reading when he died in 1959 at age 50 due to long term alcoholism from a heart attack that at his autopsy showed his body was that of a 75 year old due to his excessive drinking and liver in such bad shape that he would have died with 9-12 months after his death had he lived longer. Rip Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Big Bopper who died in Clear Lake Iowa not far from where my Dad grew up as I live in Minnesota.

      @@StephenLuke I agree.

    • @StephenLuke
      @StephenLuke 3 месяца назад +3

      @@jamesmoss3424 Here’s why it was a mistake for Peterson:
      The CAB found that although Peterson had flown for 711 hours, he had only completed 52 hours of instrument flight training. He would pass his written test, but he was not yet certified to fly in conditions where using instruments alone was necessary. The Dwyer Flying Service was only authorized to operate under visual flight rules; however, on the night of the incident, the low clouds, absence of a horizon, and lack of ground lights would have made visual flying impossible.
      Nine months before the accident, Peterson's instrument check was also unsuccessful. His training was also conducted on aircraft with a traditional artificial horizon. An older Sperry F3 attitude gyroscope was installed on the Bonanza involved in the crash; the two types of instruments show aircraft pitch attitude data in graphically opposite ways. Peterson chose to conduct a flight that required instrument flying skills, which he lacked, and for which the CAB holds him accountable.

    The death of George Reeves was a real shocker at the time. Even though his death was ruled a suicide, there were others, including his mother, who believed that he might have been murdered because he just had too much going for him to want to kill himself. The 2006 movie Hollywood Land revolves around the circumstances of Reeves’ death, and Ben Affleck’s portrayal of him is spot on.

    Una O'Connor was nearly 50 years old before she appeared in her first film and her career only really took off after she appeared on stage in Noel Coward's "Cavalcade" (1933) at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. The part she played was one Coward wrote with her in mind. It was her key to what became a successful film career playing mainly comic and fluttery voiced maids and servants.
