Every time I watch a Will Terrell video I anticipate a few things. 1: I will learn good art advice. 2: I will learn general life advice. 3: I will feel kinda emotional from hearing him get all deep and stuff. My emotions, my emotions! Thanks Will!
"What's the story behind the picture" is going to end up being my mantra for the rest of my artwork. Thank you so much for putting it in front of my face with neon arrows so I didn't miss it. So simple that I overlooked it and yet completely profound that I wonder how I missed it in the first place. Also, may I just say that that old lady is everything I do in life. I feel like I got my shit together, but everyone on the outside is just like, "What is she doing?". Yeah, that sums it up nicely.
Will, I just love how friendly you are and how openly you talk about your drawings. You have a wonderful talent that you know how to express, fill it with love and share it. You are amazing and I love your channel! Keep on doing the thing you do!
+Pétur Geir Magnússon Something i love about this channel is he is not afraid of messing up. He can have a "I cant talk moment" and not want to redo the take or whatever you call it. Keep going Will!
Wow. Judging by the title I was expecting some type of clickbait but instead I ended up getting the best art advice I've gotten in awhile and life advice too! Not to mention an adorable drawing that put a smile on my face. Thankyou. Keep up the amazing videos!
Initially I came to see the little old lady and hear your tip, but I was intrigued by "the story" I stayed the entire 19 minutes, great job Will I thank you grandly for opening our minds to this technique.
You know what? I fucking love you man! This videos make me close RUclips and start drawing more! It's just so inspiring. Thanks a lot for this. Keep it up.
Will, you may not read this comment ever but if you do, i would like for you to keep in my, you have made drastic change in my life, most of it not in my artowork at all, the way i think about certain things, some things about my daily life the perpestive of things the way i think about something , i only noticed this recently , my perpectives like "god, i ve nailed it ..how did..? oh yea that video!" and in some ways my social life as well. You're a good guy, the advice you give is from an open heart, you're open, you're authentic, what you say is not something to think about and force, you tell us life lessons from YOUR experience and share it, share what you've learnt which makes it real, true ,..legit,thank you for that...so much! My art still needs some improvement, but it's that way for everyone right? i'm trying, and as far as i know, i got the motivation it needs to get better, time and ... well mixing up a bunch of youtubers' videos Again thank you, so much
it may be a small thing, but this video improved my artistic ideas and my outlook on art in general, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. So according to your own words, you've met your goal. Thanks man.
I really like your sense of humor, your laugh, make me laugh... I feel that you enjoy life and don't take it too seriously, it's a fresh air. And the music is very good too... Oh, by the way, you are so a very talent artist, thanks for sharing us your precious tips and "joie de vivre" 😊.
I'm going to be drawing caricatures for other people for the first time this weekend and I've been re-watching a lot of your videos, and this one in particular really helped. I'm much more confident in how to approach doing it. Thank you so much and I love all your art!
Thank you very much. When you made the point about valuing yourself it really hit close to home. I've never thought my work was ever worth it. I'm working on that. I went to school for animation and in my demo reel I used the song "Loser" by Beck as the background music. I've seriously just lived a devalued life. But I'm learning and I'm growing. I'm getting back into my sketch book day by day. I've become terribly rusty, what I used to do before in ten minutes is taking me much longer. But I want and I need to get better for me. I went to school thinking that when I came out I'd be some amazing wonderful artist and I'd have it all figured out. Well that's not the case and what I really love about you is your enjoyment for learning. We have to keep learning no matter who we are or how far we've gotten. Thank you for this video and your other amazing videos. Hope you have a great day!
chimjim89 Good, cus you aren't a loser, we are what we believe, so believe you are great, and you will be! I know it sounds like a philosophical cliche, but its true!
Thank you, sir. I applied your tip, and it works great, I sold my first drawing ever thanks to you and I am ever so grateful for this, none of my art teachers ever told me this. Faith in my art restored, THANK YOU!
I just love that GREEN shirt! I have posted to my art journal group to watch your videos. I think they will inspire these budding artists. Thank you for doing these.
I hope you read this, Will. I came to this video to find what other wisdom you have to offer to me in order to become a better artist and take it as serious as possible and while you did that you also provided a life lesson. I get kinda depressed sometimes and overwhelmed by other people's work and stressed out that whatever is in my head won't come out onto the paper the way I'd like it to sometimes. But as you said, everyone has value. Everyone is good at something and personally I think drawing stuff is all that I have going for me. I've been doing it ever since elementary school and I'm 22 now and I've thought that my time has run out to become good. It's not true. I'm getting old but I'm not decrepit yet lol. So I suppose what I'm trying to say is that I can't give up because it's not over and I can still have a shot with this. Thanks, Will. We need more lighthearted people like you, man. I appreciate this.
Oh my goodness, you answered! lol. I think that's the main thing that's an issue with me, my impatience. There are alot of things I want to accomplish in my life but I just gotta remind myself that it'll be slow but I must take it day by day.
And the same will go for my art skills. This is something I've wanted to get better at for the longest time and since I'm pretty much my own worst critic I stopped on and off over the years but now I will try my best to sketch everyday. Right now I'm sketching one of my favorite cars in different perspectives to study different perspectives. By the way, do you have like a video showcase of your subscribers displaying their art and you giving critique? I'd like to get some critique if it's not too much trouble.
You are one of my favourite artists I think I've ever had the pleasure of viewing. Your drawings are very entertaining, and your personality is so charismatic that I can't help but laugh alongside with you!
I was expecting a cute little old lady feeding birds. I was so enchanted with your storytelling that I didn't realize until you added the tails what I was looking at! So I got a look at an artist at work, a life lesson and an art lesson, a great laugh, and loved it all. Thank you.
Another great life lesson disguised as an art tip, and another cool sketch. I love your method of coloring & fleshing out the characters BEFORE inking the contours. It's a thrill to watch it all come together in the end.
Its a great feeling when you see someone using his talent to share a message of happiness. It encourages/inspires you to follow your own path and to find the key to your own sense of plenitude and from there, to share the joy of life through your gifts/talents with everyone/everything. Thank you, thanks for the storytelling & the advice.. Regards.
You're laugh is the best laugh I've ever heard, just wanted to point that out. Thank you for your words of wisdom! Very helpful! Drastically improved my work!
I watch your videos to learn to become a better artist and I always end up leaving with a Life lesson lol, good stuff man really dig your work keep up the good vibes.
I watch a lot of art videos on RUclips, including tutorials and you are by far the best teacher out of all of them. Your advice has made me a better artist and taught me to enjoy art again. Thank you!
Oh my god, your drawing, your ideas - which are soooo relevant - and laugh just lightened up my day (and possibly my drawings hehe) Thanks a loooot and keep on, you're truly inspiring and just so amazing!!!
My friend sent this video to me saying "You will love this." And Well... she was right. As fun as it was to see the little old lady come to life, it's even cooler to hear you tell your story. I'm an art student and everything you've shared hits very close to home! You have a new subscriber :)
I almost didn't click on this video because I thought it was a scam or some technique that only works in certain styles, but I am SO glad I did! Wonderful video!
you've helped me more than you know. Something literally just clicked, I was trying to figure why my drawings all seem so stiff, rough, and all in all not very good. After watching this and the tips for getting better at drawing, you've helped me develop a great style and I look forward to growing even more so. Thank you so much, Mr. Terrell.
I really love this drawing and your tip. why? First I thought the old lady just wanted to feed the rats... that's cute, but... Then I saw she was giving them bird food, haha.... o wait.. is she almost blind? Haha, I wonder if the old lady thinks she's feeding birds.... The story really is funny
Wow, this was right on time. Ive been praying latley on what to do with my gifts and if I or what I do even matters. Hearing you speak on value has put things in better perspective. I haven't been watching your videos long but I appreciate the time you take to do them, plus every time you laugh i feel lighter lol 😅 Your the man Will Terrell, never change.
First off, "ya'll," is a perfectly useful word. Second, this must be the psychology-help channel for artist. In short, subscribed. Nice videos and nice art.
Thank you Will ! this helped me understand the importance of a message in our drawings. people made me forget why i did this in the first place. lately i've been drawing for people's appreciation. but when i was a child in school i used to just draw because i have fun. because i love it a lot. and i draw stories a lot. people were waiting for the story and the continuation. Gbu~
i thought this surely would have to be a click grabbing title and there's no quick fix for instantly better drawings but it's very true. my older drawings were all focused on stories, and my most recent ones as i've practiced are more technical. i was wondering why i used to get more of a response from my old drawings ! thanks will.
My brother sent me this video after I posted some art online. I love to create characters, but I find it hard to communicate why I love them so much! This video really helped a lot, I'm going to focus more on sketching stories! Thanks for all the advice!
I was looking for comforting words in RUclips since I haven't felt like drawing for a very long time. And suddenly remembered this exact video from so many years ago. The old lady feeding rats and amazing advice. And it was as good as I remembered it to be. Thank you Will.
You make me smile. Just hearing your words of wisdom and seeing you laugh at that lovely old lady is euphoric. I take your advice to heart and tip my hat to you, sir. Amazing advice, really.
***** It takes practice. Start off redrawing referance images as close you can. Once you feel you have the structure of the subject down, put it all away and start drawing from memory. Dont worry if it's off, simply draw. Then try drawing it in another pose or from another viewpoint. But by all means, when you're drawing from memory, draw in YOUR STYLE. Not anyone else's. And over time and with practice, you'll be able to draw any pose/item you wish. But it will not happen over night. Hope this helps
Everything you say is beautiful, man. You're like the laughing Buddha of illustrators. Humour, insight, kindness and great skill - you have it all. Thanks so much for this.
This is helping me shake off a creative rut. It's so simple, I know it, and I keep forgetting it. I read a tweet by Scott McCloud years ago that said "What you draw is more important than how you draw it." Yet I keep finding myself drawing random dull character poses... and I have the nerve to call myself a storyteller. Your video woke me up. Thanks.
Wow, you are OSM! Personally I think you are the greatest RUclips artist. In your videos, the way you explain how to draw things or just showing us what you have done recently, make us really want to draw! You are funny, enthusiastic with your work, you're not like the other YT artist who just explain "art in general" in their tutos (not all of them of course :) ) , you say your personal opinion etc.. I talked too much :-\ Anyway, keep on the good work Will :D PS: what's your coloring tool in your vid?
I find a lot of comfort knowing that I can come watch your videos whenever I need a boost with my art because your advice is so relevant and you seem like such a genuinely wonderful person. This is one of those videos that just hits me home in a few spots and I sort of get emotional and tear up a bit. You're a wonderful teacher! I hope to meet you in person one day.
Wow. Your advice really speaks to me. I see exactly why I'm so frustrated all the time! I'd love to see you do a video on how to be a good storyteller.
This tip.. its super obvious but I mean how many people REALLY think about that? I honestly knew this in my subconsciousness, but I never really applied it much.
I don't really watch your videos, I just check in every now and then and sometimes look and listen a little longer, but I mostly just listen while drawing myself or doing whatever that has to do with art, because your voice and comments just keeps my spirit up
Came across this so many years ago. I had it saved somewhere in my RUclips playlists and it was a joy to rewatch this again. I became interested in the arts when I was trying to figure out my post-secondary schooling and I'm studying graphic design now. You're totally right. Telling stories is something i've tried to remember and it makes everything so much more interesting and enjoyable. Thanks Will!
The old people you draw are absolutely amazing. Somehow you make them look young at heart. Since I am a little old lady it is all the better. Thanks for all you share, donn
Watching your videos really inspire me and remind me that art isn't about perfection, but more of a reflection of yourself. I love listening to your laugh and watching how you enjoy doing what you are doing. I was struggling lately on wondering if I should even continue with art, or worrying if my art is any good, but watching your videos was such a breath of fresh air. I ultimately wanted to be an artist to share a story, and you reminded me that art isn't about capturing the perfect moment, but showing people a story from how you perceive it. Thank you for posting and thank you for doing what you do and laughing because it reminds me not to take the things I love so much so seriously and killing the beauty of it. I love the old lady and it does make me laugh. It reminds me of my grandma. You are very inspiring!
Dude, you are my favorite RUclips find in a LONG time! Even if it wasn't amazing artwork/instruction/advice I'd still watch you, Will. Appreciate the uploads & effort- thank you.
great tip with the story, it's something people sometimes forget with art in general, really good art takes you on a trip, whether it's a painting or a song or a play or a movie
I started watching this video thinking this will be another instructional video and got a lot more. Since I was little I always loved to draw but seeing others drawings I'd doubt mine. So throughout the years I LIKED to draw and continued doing it but never had that same spark as a kid. As you were talking about experiences, storytelling, and value. I remember why I started drawing, it was with my older brother making our own comic book in the kitchen just having fun. That moment was one of the best moments of my life. Sharing and making that comic put smiles on so many faces. Thank you for this video you have brought back a spark that has been gone for many years. (Pure Inspiration)
I've only just stumbled across your artwork & videos Will, but MAN! I absolutely love them. Particularly this video. The old lady is adorable and your sentiment and advice rings true! I think that's why people enjoy sketches so much, and watching people sketch. It's like they're involved in the creation of something. Beyond seeing a finished article, they get to see how it came to be and the work that goes into it! You're a real inspiration, can't wait to go through what you've uploaded thus far! Cheers!
I absolutely love the advice you give. I drew a lot as a teen but later got rusty over the years by not drawing. Now as a motion graphics artist and designer my passion for drawing has returned. Your advice fuels me more to further my skills as an artist better now than ever. Thanks.
I've felt like my art has been at a threshold of something better for the last few months. I honestly think this is exactly what I needed to hear. If you read this, thank you, looking forward to the rest of your videos. Great art and the best attitude.
Just happened upon this after a google search on practicing drawing, and your honesty and wisdom just drew me in. How I can put this in front of me every day to remember it... THANK YOU.
I never thought of "telling a story" with my drawings...I knew something was missing, I knew I was "okay" skill wise but I knew my work was missing "substance" THANK YOU SO MUCH! you opened my eyes to what I was missing!!! you are so amazing, I love watching your vids &hearing you talk about positive things, such an inspiration, your work is beautiful.
I just wanted to say, I've been in an internationally recognized fine art school for over a year now, but the advice you give in your videos is definitely some of the best I've ever received. Thank you! :)
Stumbled across this video and absolutely love it. I never noticed before how much better drawings are when they tell a story. I'm definitely going to start doing that more in my art! Love the drawing too of the little old lady feeding small animals in a park looking setting. Classic:D I also enjoined listening to you talk during this drawing, you definitely earned a subscriber!
"Your life should be creating value for other people, and then you get that in return." If the whole world followed this, then imagine what a better place it would be!!! You are super inspiring. Thank you for sharing your talent. I am subscribed to the artist's magazine where I saw an ad for Strathmore Workshop Series. Who knew I would find such a gem? Thanks!!
I just discovered you tonight as I got some art stuff for Christmas and want to learn to draw. I could watch you sketch for hours. And you're hilarious! Keep on drawing dude. If not, the world will lose an amazing talent.
Your illustrations are great, and I love having your videos playing in the background while I draw. You've given me so many new ideas and a lot of perspective on what it actually means to be a professional artist. Thank you for doing what you do!
I found your channel about a week ago and I am now watching your whole people sketching series because I LOVE it and I am so inspired by your work as an artist 🎨🖤 keep sharing!
This is very true in my experience! I can draw something really good that takes days and people will glance and tell me it is really good, but they will probably not go back to it. Thank you Will Terrell! I really needed this! Story!
Came for drawing tips. Got deep life advice.
Conrad TM clickbait!
Every time I watch a Will Terrell video I anticipate a few things.
1: I will learn good art advice.
2: I will learn general life advice.
3: I will feel kinda emotional from hearing him get all deep and stuff.
My emotions, my emotions! Thanks Will!
I'm right there with you man. Will is so inspirational!

You're welcome! Thanks to you.

+Will Terrell your art reminds me of Disney things like up ratoille and the incredibles.

I learn so much from these videos.
it may be a small thing, but this video improved my artistic ideas and my outlook on art in general, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. So according to your own words, you've met your goal. Thanks man.
these episodes are so different from what you see on other drawing/painting/sketching channels but are SO helpful!! Thank you!!!!
"It's not about how great it looks, it's about what you do with it."
Damn amazing quote.
Will, for some reason your subscribers community is the best I've seen ever on youtube. What you do is good keep going man!
Omg I love your laugh it makes my day :'DD

I really like your sense of humor, your laugh, make me laugh... I feel that you enjoy life and don't take it too seriously, it's a fresh air. And the music is very good too... Oh, by the way, you are so a very talent artist, thanks for sharing us your precious tips and "joie de vivre" 😊.

I'm glad it helped, friend. I hope its a very fun experience for you doing caricatures. And I hope you make many many people smile.

This is exactly the advice I needed right now. I LOVE your little old lady. She's adorable. Your laugh is infectious.
Thanks hopefully this makes me better for my dream job at Pixar
Same! But now Pixar is Disney .. Yeah!
+patheticpuffz I make a lot of comics!
Hey man :D
How's that dream going?
I was looking for comforting words in RUclips since I haven't felt like drawing for a very long time. And suddenly remembered this exact video from so many years ago. The old lady feeding rats and amazing advice. And it was as good as I remembered it to be. Thank you Will.
I love your laugh man.
For some reason I rarely find drawing videos that are enlightening like this one. Thank you! This method actually makes drawing fun.
lol I just love your laugh, it makes me laugh too xD
You make me smile. Just hearing your words of wisdom and seeing you laugh at that lovely old lady is euphoric. I take your advice to heart and tip my hat to you, sir. Amazing advice, really.
*****
It takes practice.
You're so entertaining ! Love your laughter and your philosophy of art and life! Bless you!
i hope you will always laugh my friend, you have the best giggles :D
and keep up the good works.
Everything you say is beautiful, man. You're like the laughing Buddha of illustrators. Humour, insight, kindness and great skill - you have it all. Thanks so much for this.
His laugh...it cures cancer.
I talked too much :-\
Anyway, keep on the good work Will :D
PS: what's your coloring tool in your vid?
He was using prismacolor markers 😊
I like how I came for a quick tip and watch you draw a picture and got sucked into the story and you kept it interesting.
Like your humor and your videos. Trying to improve my art. Righ now. O_O
I hope to meet you in person one day.
my sculpture teacher say once: THERE IS NO SECRETS IN THE ART WORLD, THE ONLY SECRET IS WORKING HARD
I love to draw while listening to people talking, especially your videos they are awesome!
"(Toss people out there) Like, whoop, go learn!"
-Life, basically xD
I love how you crack yourself up. It makes the videos so much more fun and approachable.
I like to think that she thinks shes feeding birds.
I don't really watch your videos, I just check in every now and then and sometimes look and listen a little longer, but I mostly just listen while drawing myself or doing whatever that has to do with art, because your voice and comments just keeps my spirit up
I see why is it so funny. She is so fat, fluffly and obviously well fed vs giving crums to a little starving pigeon.
OOOhh sorry comment before ending the video XD. The rats the rats.
You're so bad
eloisaanguiano Um...noooo...you missed it...they're not birds, they're RATS, she can't SEE
Came across this so many years ago.
Cheers!
I look forward to hearing your intro music all the time. it just bring a smile to my face
Love this drawing so much. She looks so happy yet kind of crazy at the same time it's perfect..
I just discovered your work, and in the last 30 min I have learned more from you than from any other art teacher ever. Thank you.
I just wanted to say, I've been in an internationally recognized fine art school for over a year now, but the advice you give in your videos is definitely some of the best I've ever received. Thank you! :)
your personality is magnetizing, it's so entertaining just to listen to you.
Story!
