The fruit of the cactus plant is known as prickly pear. It tastes like melon with a little bit of berry taste and can be fairly sweet.

No, no, no. Mojo is eaten with boiled potatoes not baked!!!! :) The green one is usually served with fish and the red with meat and fish. The cactus the jam is made from is the one that gives the prickly pears, and that is what is used to make the jam The turron sweets, the mantecados and polvorones are traditionally eaten at Christmas. The white strawberry is supposed to look like an almond when it's in the tree. I'm from Tenerife, but I lived in Gran Canaria for 2 years, now in the UK, and I can't even begin to tell you how happy and proud I feel to hear my beloved islands mentioned in your channel. Massive thanks to the person who send you that parcel. And still impressed by your Spanish pronunciation.

The prickly pear fruit is sold here in season and is very popular eaten as is. (It's hard to find the jam.) You can find them growing wild but they have developed one cultivated kind that doesn't have the fierce prickles. However it still has tiny prickles so you have to be careful when peeling so as not to get them onto the sweet inner fruit or they get in your mouth. NOT fun! 🌵
(If you roll them in sand first, that is supposed to break the tiny prickles off.)
We call them sabras in Hebrew and native born Israelis are also called Sabras! Prickly on the outside but sweet on the inside. 😘

ahh this makes me feel so nostalgic, I had to comment! I've been to the Canaries a couple times and the food is so good!! I really miss it, Lanzarote I think you guys would especially enjoy visiting.
One thing about the mojo- usually it's served with Papas Arrugadas, new potatoes boiled in extremely salty water (traditionally sea water) so that once they've been drained and left to sit in the warm pan for a while, the skins go wrinkly and develop an amazing salt crust. I've made them at home before and it's really easy, if a bit messy!

We know the Canary Islands well here in San Antonio, because the original settlers of our city came from there. In fact, all of this year has been a celebration of their arrival here 300 years ago. :D
The cactus in the jam might actually be the cactus fruit, which we call prickly pear here in Texas. And yes, it's usually a shade of pink or a pinkish red. When I can afford it, I'll send you a bottle of locally made prickly pear soda, so that you can give it a try.

This was so much fun! It was such a wonderful assortment of treats from Gran Canaria. Thank you, Millie! The Mojo sauces looked so delicious. I hope you will try them on baked potatoes. That sounds good! I wonder if they would also be good with fish or chicken? Guy Mats gave you good information about the cactus. That type of cactus grows here also, and they are making fruit now. I should try to take a photo for you so you can see it! I have had cactus pear jam before. The cactus pears turn bright red when they are ripe. It's so fun to see all these treats from around the world. Thanks again to Millie for sending such amazing treats, and thank to you, Shinichi and Satoshi, for the video! :-) Such a day-brightener!

  • @nana16792
    @nana16792 2 года назад

I see that other people have talked about this already. I bumped into your channel by chance and loved this. I'm from Gran Canaria, the “Cactus” jam is probably “Tuno” jam really, which is the fruit of the cactus. It can be pink-ish or kind of orange or lighter, that's way the jam came out that colour. The Mojo Rojo and Suave are usually eaten with Papas Arrugadas (small usually new potatoes that are boiled, with the skin on, in very salted water then left to rest for a little which makes the skin to wrinkle, hence the name), and the Mojo Verde is typically served with fish😋. Obviously, you can have these with loads of other things; never thought of having it on pizza but I might try it now that you mentioned it haha.
The Bienmesave (the almond jammy-like thing) is pretty nice on ice cream too, or natural yoghurt🤩. The brand you've got there is from my hometown, Tejeda.
Loved this video, felt very appreciative ! Thank you, made me super happy!❤

The treats from Millie looked so good! She sent you so many!! The mojo’s and the jams looked amazing, as did all of the other treats! On my son’s recent trip to the University of Arizona, I specifically asked him to bring me a box of cactus candy. A beautifully red jelly candy made from the tunas (prickly pear), then covered in sugar.
    Thanks for sharing brothers! ❤️

Cactus Pear is the fruit of the cactus and is red and is sweet. So I think that Cactus Jam is probably Cactus Pear Jam. The green part of the cactus is a common vegetable in Mexico - they call it Nopales and make salad or fry with eggs and onions. To me, The green cactus tastes like Aloe.

That cactus jam was more than likely a prickly pear jam. This cactus blooms with really vibrantly colored flowers which fall away as a large red fruit swells up from the cactus branch under where the flower was. They're very sweet but a lil weird to get at the tasty bit of the fruit.

Pretty sure that "white egg" or "white strawberry" as Satoshi called it lol, is actually an almond shaped sweet. That's what an almond looks like when it's still in its shell, white with tiny holes. You mentioned the island is known for their almonds and almond products, so that's most likely what the treat was shaped as :)

The fruit of a cactus tastes like watermelon to me. Some smell like strawberries but not sweet. Yuck!

I reckon the cactus jam would be dragon fruit. Mostly likely?

Teresa P. C. Lim I think it would more likely be prickly pear fruit of cactus. Common type dragon fruit is white on the inside and sweet but to most people taste like water or kiwis
