The reason ty lee is not wearing make up is not a continuity error. In one of the comics, she went through a character arc about how she did not want to blend in like she did her sisters. In order to make her stay with the Kyoshi warriors, Suki reassured her that she can just take the face paint off. Which is what she does in this comic

I don’t actually blame Azula for anything. I blame her father. It was obvious that she was losing her mind when she lost the big battle in book 2 zuko was heading in the same direction too but realized the truth.
With azula being alone she’s is most likely to confront her mind. Ty Lee is basically acting the part that is still normal and trying to get her to face reality.
It reminds me of what happened in the Winx Club season 8 finale. Icy finally understood what Headmistress Griffin was trying to teach her back in season 1. Icy understood that Fairies drive witches to become more powerful and that in turn drives fairies to become stronger and earn more power. And icy realize she wouldn’t be as powerful as she is if it wasn’t for bloom which ended with a silent promise that when it is time icy will be able to count on bloom to help her one day

That panel where everyone, including Iroh, is praising her describes Azula's character motivations PERFECTLY. Seeking validation is the core of her character. Every single action she takes in the series before breaking down is taken with the intention to get Ozai's validation. Mai and Ty Lee's betrayal did hurt her but she only snapped when she realized that even with everything she's done for him, Ozai still does not openly give her validation

    • @wellingtonsh1

She lost control because the one thing she knew for sure failed.
Azula always accepted that she wouldn't be loved, she was a monster and she knew it, she was resigned to it.
But she believed that she could survive, be useful and prosper if she knew how to manipulate the fear that her subjects would never betray her. Because she lost confidence in her abilities she fired the Fire Guard and the Dai Li, which is why in the comics she asks Ty Lee "when did you stop fearing me?".
She regains her sanity when she accepts that she was never meant to be the Fire Lady and that her mission is to help her brother in the Shadows, against his will, to preserve the old ways of the Fire Nation and give meaning to his discipline, virtuosity in the fold. of fire and especially in the use she makes of fear, the force she has always trusted and identified with.

When Zuko was banished, all the pressure to satisfy Ozai’s demands fell squarely on her shoulders. Zuko and ursa were the only ones who knew how hard it was to live with Ozai, but they never saw what he was like when all he had left was Azula.
It took Iroh 3-4 years to break through the indoctrination that Ozai imposed on him, it would likely take even more time to get through to retrieve Azula and bring her back from the brink, but Zuko and the Gaang could help her to see that it doesn’t have to be this way. The saddest part about Azula for me, is that even though she lacks empathy and compassion, she never had anyone in her life reach out to her and try to help her. Ursa and Iroh both have Zuko unconditional love, guidance, and support and neither of them showed the same interest in Azula even when she was a child. So if Azula is going through with some sort of redemption arc, she is going to be doing it for the majority, alone. Whereas Zuko had Iroh to guide him almost every step of the way, Azula will be dealing with her trauma and her past by herself. Although, I do think that eventually Zuko will be the one to be there for her. Which I hope he is 💙

We do see Iroh giving her a doll so he does cared about her. Then she burned it & try to take Zuko's gift(a knife) because she like it, showing she is the one rejecting Iroh's affection(may be multiple time) while Zuko accept Iroh's affection & thus got closer to Iroh(or Zuko let Iroh got closer to him). To be honest, it felt like she see everyone(beside her domineering dad) as weaker thus undeserving of true affection & separating them into 2 categories: pawn can be used or obstacle to be eliminated
_ This scene is short so this is just my theory: Iroh saw Zuko's lack of confident & Azula cruel nature so he gave Zuko a knife(boost his confidence) & Azula a doll(telling her to be gentler, more merciful)

I don’t know why so many people are so opposed to Azulas redemption.
    1. She’s only 14. She deserves a chance.
    2. She has just as much potential as Zuko. She is just as much a descendant of Sozin and Roku as Zuko. Give her a chance.
    3. We need to understand the difference between Zuko and Azula. Zuko lived with internal strife because he knew what his mother and Iroh had instilled in him about right and wrong, but that was conflicted with what he HAD to do to EARN his fathers love and acceptance. We don’t know the extent of how much attention Ursa gave Azula, but it’s clear that she was solely influenced by Ozai.
This is a teenage girl who has been manipulated and brainwashed was her megalomaniacal father without any positive influences. Give her a chance.

Pretty late to the party. Or she could opt out at the last minute, thinking the Gaang will just neuter her completely, making her docile which she won't like. Then they do battle, but she is hurt. Somewhere, she is found, nurtured back to health by some people, and she awakens.... with little to no memories. At this point she is a blank slate. She could relearn everything but from the people's pov. Maybe time passes by (don't know how much so do with it what you will with that one) and she is a completely different person than we know her as. Complete opposite from the main story. Then she starts having "dreams/visions" of things. Thinks it's just that, dreams/visions. More time passes and these dreams/visions tells her something else entirely. One day she realizes she was someone else from these dreams/visions. She ultimately decides to be different from "that person" and lives with the people helped her back to health. Another time skip, where she either keeps her new memories or remembers everything.
The former - maybe she gets called back into action where a conflict comes into her new home and is somehow recognized by the opposing people. They immediately attack her and tell the people who she used to be. They told the opposers that she is who she is now, not she was once. She made a life here and you can't take it from her. The opposers tells the people that she is a manipulative and cold hearted person and will do anything until the right time to strike. Azula makes the hard decision to go with them and convince them she is no longer that person. She either says farewell or we'll see each other again soon. She goes back to the world and sees unfamiliar faces: the Gaang, Zuko, Mai, Ty Lee and maybe Iron (depending on how much of a time skip we do here sooooo....). She tells them that she lost her memories and that the people nursed her back to health gave her a new life and a new point of view of it. She no longer has any ill will towards her "enemies" and that she wants to back home and settle there. Ending here we can go two ways. One is some if not most will not believe her story. They then tell the world about her reappearance and they'll decide her fate. If the people wants justice, then they can send her jail, never seeing her people again. She tells the Gaang before she does so she would like to personally go back to her people of the news and to say goodbye. Very emotional goodbye but she goes back and is imprisoned, never to be seen/heard from again. Another is that they really do believe her and see it themselves that she is not Azula they know anymore, and may never be. They respect her wishes and she goes back to her people. Settling down, maybe fall in love, get married, have children, etc. Maybe the Gaang visit her from time to time and share stories together. Zuko may actually have a sister here.
The latter - she suddenly remembers everything. But she also has her new memories. She is Azula again, but more so neutral than just goody two shoes all of a sudden. The sudden shift is very telling to the people and realize she has regained her memories. She wants to make amends and goes back to the world. She doesn't tell her people she left, just that they don't see her anymore. She encounters the Gaang and theu are ready to fight. She doesn't. Instead she tells them of her story up to this point. Some don't believe her. The rest do but are slightly suspicious. They then huddle to figure out what's next. Ultimately decided to give her a second chance, like a trial run of sorts. She is glad and tells them she is a changed woman for the better. Just like in the second half of Book 3, each of them has road trips with Azula. Keeping a close eye on her if what she say is really true. It does seem to be that she has changed. There are some world ending events that takes place in the interim, giving the Gaang enough evidence that she really is a changed woman for the better. Another two endings here. One is that they give her a seat at the Gaang table, finally welcoming her into the fold. She accepts. However she wants to live with the people that nursed her back to health, and not at the Palace or anywhere else. Maybe during her road trips, she finds a Dragon egg. She nurses it and when it hatches, raises it and would be her mode of transport. She comes back and tells the people everything. From being a princess to being a co conspirator to the machinations that is the Hundred Year War. Every stone is unturned here. The people accepts her for who she is now, not what she used to be. She stays here. Settles down, falls in love, got married, have children, etc. She still communicates with thr Gaang from time to time. They visit her and shade stories. If they need help, all they have to do is come over and ask. The other is that they don't believe her and wants justice. They want her to be imprisoned for all the crimes she committed. She can run away but knowing them they'll come after her. And the first place they'll look is with the people that nursed her to health. She doesn't want them to meddled into her mess. So she decides to stay and be imprisoned, never to be seen/heard from again.
      ....
I know, very long. It could go either way though honestly. I like her latter option with good ending. It makes sense (at least to me soooooo....). I don't know about y'all though.
      Much love and respect.

If characters like Zuko can be redeemed, then even characters like Azula or maybe even Ozai are capable of that as well. They, like Zuko, would have to put in the work. And I think we shouldn’t mistake redemption for forgiveness. Ozai and Azula, even if they are redeemed, have to face the consequences of what they’ve done, and pay their debt to society. Redemption doesn’t excuse them of what they’ve done, but it does allow them to make amends. And if there are people who cannot forgive them for what they’ve done, they will have to accept that. I think Katara’s decision not to forgive Yon Rha for killing her mother I think is a very realistic way of how some people might react to people who’ve hurt them. There are things people can forgive, but when it’s something that personal, it may be too hard to forgive. We don’t have to always forgive the people who hurt us, even when we’re taught in childhood that’s morally right. But I think what we can do, and what Katara demonstrates, is that we don’t have to let that anger at the person who hurt us control our lives. If Azula is redeemed it will be based on not whether she can, but whether she wants to, and whether she is willing to put in the time and effort. And if at the end Mai and Ty Lee don’t forgive her and become her friends again, she will have to live with that.

Zuko had been struggling with himself and with what is right since he was young. He never wanted to hurt anyone but his upbringing made him that way. That is what made his redemption so believable. Azula was getting an insane amount of pleasure seeing other people suffer and feeling like she is above everyone else. She didn't even care that her cousin died, all she could think about was that her father might be king now. It's not the same.

    • @SiriusGalilei
      @SiriusGalilei 9 месяцев назад +7

@@jorisanker5205 you have a point, Azula does take pleasure in hurting people whereas Zuko does not. However, remember that the two of them had vastly different role models who helped form their moral compass. For Zuko it was Ursa and Iroh, while Azula had Ozai. Each of these role models helped instill the qualities that Zuko and Azula value in themselves. When Irohs son died, Zukos reaction was to feel empathy for the pain his uncle was in because part of his identity was shaped by his mother, who taught him such a thing like empathy. Azulas reaction to their cousins death was to feel joy because Ozai instilled in her the the belief that power is everything, so the chance to take it is something she would feel happy about. People can choose what values they take stock in, but much of who we are can be influenced by our upbringing. So while they did eventually choose their own paths, part of who they are as people came from those role models.

I feel like Azula needs some sort of redemption arc. Her character was the favorite child and firebending prodigy, but we never really get to know her well enough to know what’s going through her mind after they find her and Zuko’s mother (that’s all for spoilers) and seeing everyone happy around her, everyone that she believes thought of her as a monster, and her two closest friends, ex friends, however you interpret it, I think they’re both there because she does care about them, just like she cares about her mother and Zuko but won’t tell anyone. This will probably concentrate on her failure to beat Zuko and Katara, and how she feels that she let her family and the Fire nation down. That’s just a guess though. Azula might be able to change, but I feel she needs some friends and family to help her learn to trust others again.

I don't care about her literary role. Whether she's a villain, neutral, a hero, or whatever. I want a redemption arc for her because I'm interested in her psychological journey as if she were a real person. Ultimately, she's a 14-year old trauma victim of her father's narcissistic abuse, where she was the golden child and Zuko was the scapegoat. Now Azula can either choose to be a flying monkey for the rest of her life, defending the narcissist and environment she grew up in even now that it is clearly all in shambles, or she can learn to be a cycle breaker like Zuko and accept that her world view was a product of her own generational trauma. I would like to see her find her true inner strength with actual processing of the truth, not stay a weak broken mental shell of the person she once was because she can't understand what actually happened to her.

0:20-0:21 I love the idea of Azula having redemption! I went through redemption during my college years serving on senate. I grew up with mutually misunderstanding people and unknowingly being to hard with them. It stemmed from my struggles after moving from my birth state Texas as a kid in 2003. No one was mad at me in the first place and all wanted the best for me. My redemption era ended 12-29-2019 when I finally forgave all wrongs done to me and by me. Redemption is the best thing that could have been done with my life, it set me free and on the right path. Now I close in on my big career and serving in leadership once more. Leadership has always been a prodigious skill of mine. 4:46 that is similar to what people who lived a righteous life experience when they first go to heaven after having just died and been through life review. They do get reunited with pets they had and dwell with all animals and plants that lived here both before and during human times.

I actually heard that a deleted arc in the series was an arranged marriage for Azula. I was thinking that could be her redemption arc. I think it would go like this:
It's the start of season three (shortly after Crossroads of Destiny), Ozai tells Azula about the arranged marriage. He says it's to form an alliance and make him an even more powerful ruler, as well as to continue a bloodline of powerful firebenders. She is absolutely furious about it (mainly because she thinks all other firebenders are inferior compared to her, but also because she harbors those feelings that no one actually cares about her, everyone thinks she's a monster and that she can't be loved because she's only known how to rule with fear). At night, she finds Zuko after he went to see Iroh. He sees her and begs her not to tell anyone. However, Azula tells him that's not why she's there. She tells Zuko she wants to rebel against Ozai and not get married. Reluctantly, but still slightly trusting, Zuko tells her his plan to join the Gaang and teach Aang firebending. She's taken back by it, but given what Ozai just did to her, she understands. And after hearing his plan, she tells him she wants to come along. She's so desperate to get out of the arranged marriage, she'll do anything, even swallow (some of) her pride and help the Avatar. Fast forward to Day of the Black Sun, Aang, Sokka and Toph are greeted by Azula. But this time instead of trying to stall them, she tells them everything that's going on. Of course, they don't believe her. Toph, however, let's her guard down a little and at least hears her out (because Toph sensed she was telling the truth). After the eclipse is over, Azula and Zuko both escape in the hot air balloon. Perhaps while they're following them, they could have some real close heart-to-heart brother-sister bonding time, this could actually be their life changing field trip together. (If I ever stop procrastinating and decide to write this, this is a line idea I have)
Zuko: Oh, and about what you said, at the beach, when you said mom thought you were a monster... that's not true. Mom loved you, a lot.
    Azula: No, she didn't, ZuZu.
Zuko: Yes, she did. She loved you, just not some of the choices you made. She knew it was because of father's influence.
Azula: Look, I know your only saying that because you're my brother and that you're trying to make me feel better, but you really don't have to. I already know what she thinks of me, and I've made peace with it. It is the truth, after all.
Zuko: (sigh), alright, fine. Just thought you'd want to know.
Azula actually does listen a little, she's just really in denial about Ursa loving her, and doesn't want to hear the truth after what she enforced upon herself. After they finally catch up with Team Avatar, Zuko tries to convince them that they (mostly him) have changed. Azula tries a little bit, while still being Azula about it. She says she might even teach Aang lightning bending and Zuko chimes in saying he can teach lightning redirection. Fast forward to Aang and Zuko's life changing field trip episode, either she goes with Aang and Zuko or has 'girls bonding time' with Toph and Katara (the latter is probably the better choice). She tells Toph and Katara about everything that's going on and why she's doing this. Katara, of course, is very suspicious of her, and respectfully so. Fast forward to a little before Zuko and Katara's life changing field trip. Azula tries to talk to Katara, and in a moment of weakness, asks Katara what she can do to make her trust her, or at least make it up to her, after everything she's done. Katara then tells her about her mom. Then Azula tells Zuko, and then they set up the field trip. Fast forward to after the field trip, and the three of them get back to the camp. Katara and Azula bonded a little; Katara being impressed by how strong Azula is and Azula being impressed that Katara was actually willing to kill. They're finally at peace with each other. Fast forward to a little before Sozin's Comet, Azula goes back the Fire Nation for a little bit to see Mai and Ty Lee again to tell them where she was and what she's been up to. She apologizes to them for how she treated them (but is still Azula about) and makes peace with them. Fast forward to Sozin's Comet, before Ozai leaves in his fleet, Azula fights him a for a little bit, letting out all of her anger towards him, after she finally realized that he never actually loved her, just everything that came with having a firebending prodigy as a daughter. Since there's no final Agni Kai, maybe Azula helps Sokka, Suki, and Toph, and Zuko helps the White Lotus, or Vice versa. Fast forward to Zuko's coronation. Since Zuko is the older sibling, he naturally becomes the next Fire Lord. Azula is fine with him having the throne, as long as she gets to be second in command and have power over a few things.
That's just an idea that I have.

Keep in mind that Zuko was no different or better than Azula at the start of the show. He tried to capture and even kill the avatar on multiple occasions. He also burned down an entire village without any regard for the lives he was destroying.
Iroh was just as wicked until his son died. You don't get a name like "Dragon of the West" unless you're a badass with a high kill count on the battleground.
The ONLY reason Zuko exhibited ANY redeeming qualities is because he had Iroh and his mother to guide him and teach him right from wrong. Azula did not. Ursa straight up ignored Azula most of the time and disciplined her without ever explaining to Azula why her actions were wrong or unacceptable.
Iroh never once made an effort to get close to Azula or talk some sense into her. He wrote her off because, like Ursa, he favored Zuko.
People need to examine all the FACTS before judging someone. Azula was 14 at the start of the story, and it's been scientifically proven that a person's mind is not fully mature until they're in their mid to late 20s. Azula grew up watching her father and grandfather exhibit negative traits such as cruelty and ruthlessness. They encouraged and praised her when she exhibited similar traits while belittling her if she didn’t live up to their expectations.
Being like Ozai and Azulon is all Azula knows because no one ever cared enough about her to show or teach her anything else. It's also why she's a perfectionist when it comes to her physical appearance and fire bending studies.
Saying Azula is pure evil and undeserving of redemption is hypocritical considering she was no different or worse than anyone else in her family, including Zuko and Iroh who are fan favorite characters.

There is a non spoiler review from airspeed prime, and the upcoming comic will not be a redemption but a stepping stone for her character arc. Also it is in depth character analysis of Azula in a way. There needs to be a follow up story about Azula after the comic Azula in the spirit temple. In addition Morgan from Airspeed prime did say that marketing should have been more careful about teasing redemption. The redemption in just a 72 page comic will feel rushed. The arc needs time to play out, just as it there was time for Zuko arc to play out.
The only things that is worrying is whether Azulas story will be left in limbo after the upcoming comic. Like it was left up in the air for more than 7 years after smoke and shadow comic.
So in conclusion, I would hold back, and will not announce redemption. It is still pre mature. It is yet to be seen how Azula's story plays out and ends.

My unpopular opinion is that Azula doesnt need, want, or deserve a redemption arc. She was pure evil from the beginning straight til the end AND after the story ended. She likes be ruthless, strong, precise and i like her like that. Every villain doesn’t have to turn good. She knew the difference between good and evil and she called it “pathetic” i love Azula the way she is.

And yet her story is not finished. We still do not know what becomes of her even after the upcoming comic having to watch the non spoiler review. Also your opinion is not an unpopular one. A lot of people hold this view. Looking closely there is nuisance to her character. What you described applies more to Ozai or Zhao.

I like this idea. Azula being given a chance to redeem herself is a great way of creating character development. People are complicated, and seeing a villain leave the path of evil is something I enjoy. Seeing Azula overcome her pain through a redemption arc and finally come to terms with everything is going to make for an excellent story. As another example of a good redemption arc, I loved seeing how villainous the character of Gajeel Redfox started out in Fairy tail and seeing his redemption arc. He went from Class 1 a*****e to becoming both a loyal member of the guild and then falling in love and fathering a child with the girl he initially hurt. The same goes for Jellal Fernandes; seduced to evil through manipulation to later becoming a mighty warrior who serves as a hunter of dark wizards.

To be fair, most of the comics are just fan service by this point. It's not as if much thought is put into them, save for the first one....
I mean, their idea of "Dark Zuko" was "let him install a curfew because children are being abducted en masse at night"....
Ooooow, the tyrant! How happy am I that he redeemed himself from that.... I was almost worrying.... Azula's masterplans just kept getting more and more psychopathic!

azulas development throughout the entire series eas fascinating. how at first she defind herself as perfection itself, then took pride in jer manipulation... until she lost all her pawns.
and then sge became zukos shadow.his temptation to the rage and downfall that never came to fruition.
i think azula needs to find her own "destiny" yhat isn't defined by her brother or het mother... she was SO CLOSE to discovering it in the books... but picked wrong.
hopefully this time she can chose a to stick to her own side. her own goals, rather than being an afterimage of her own projection...
i really liked her as a villain.
truth ne told? flund her a bit relatable too when she broke down. she's a fascinating character. I hope they don't redeem her. just deepen her character growth. be in in a positive or negative direction.

"... My own mother thought I was a monster...
... She was right, of course. But it still hurt."
This quote alone shows me that Azula does indeed have good inside her. The way she course-corrects to avoid looking like she feels hurt, still keeping up that facade of being an unhurtable badass monster.
She had bad parents, mostly Ozai. Ozai was downright evil. Not to say that Ursa was bad, but she didn't seem to know how to correct Azulas bad behavior so just eventually started to neglect her and spend more of her time on Zuko.
Zuko may have been banished, but it was Azula who was truly alone.

First while I don't think she should ever be completely 'fixed', her character is one where a transition from villain would make sense. On a none narrative level her appearant personality and issues are ones that could lead her down 'going straight' path, depending on how her mental scars develop, that said those scars would never truly disappear so she'd likely be one of those landmine types like: John Wick, the grumpy vet, the friendly old excon, or Roberta(black lagoon), who are generally 'reformed' but can explode back to their old ways if triggered. Note having a well cared for landmine person in a community, while a bit of extra care is need, can do wonders for keeping bad elements out, especially if their a known element, and thier triggers aren't too readily tripped.
