Scale Model Tips - 20 Nippers Tested !! - Dspiae, Godhands, Citadel, Tamiya And More - Who Will Win

- Here I test out over 20 hobby nippers. I tried to get every known brand for the hobby but I may have missed a few. For example I don't have a Testors brand here buy upon research the Testors nipper is made by Xuron of which I tested here. I also don't go into great depths testing each one as it would have taken too long to film so what I did was compare the closest cut against each piece off a runner. This way we can see how close each one gets and if it leaves any discoloration or whiting of the plastic after the cut.
I did my best to keep the camera in focus, that was the hardest part.

The hero we need here.
Thanks for this brother.
man you spend some dough on these tests if ya think about it. we apprecaite it! saves us alot of head ache and money
Ive watched 3 videos and subbed. Thats a big reason tbh. People who do mass comparison videos are awesome
@@jyoung4370 absolutely!
this is like high quality old school youtube videos, all top tier info no fluff no jumpcuts....youre a scholar and a gentleman and you probably saved a ton of people money(to eventually spend it on more plastic to cut lol)

...After buying 20 sets of nippers to do a basic clipping test...
This is where I come for overkill.
@@MF-kv8cn I think you don’t get the point. He likes testing things. It’s none of your business if he wants to test paint instead of painting a model. He’s trying products others might be curious about.
@@MF-kv8cn Is that your business? He did this to make us a lot easier. Just shut the fxxx up and go away if you don't like it. You keep complaining but you keep watching his videos...wtf...
I’ve recently found the best nippers I’ve ever used on Amazon. They are accurate, flush cutting, and seem durable. They are not made for hobbies but rather for electronics and therefore not expensive. I liked them so much I bought about 5 of them to have around the workshop.
IGAN-330 wire flush cutters if it’s okay to post that here.
The worst experience I’ve had was with Xuron nippers. Not only were they expensive because they were “hobby” nippers, but the supposedly flush tip was misaligned slightly.
I will check out those nippers. Hey what's 1 more 😏
A very thorough, honest & comprehensive review - thanks for your work making this video Sir. After my own research I had also decided upon the "Dspiae Single Blade Nipper [3.0 Vers] " myself before watching your video - so I ordered a pair today. Thanks for vindicating my decision !
I have been using a cheap set until today when my Dspiae nippers turned up. What an amazing set of nippers, worth every cent, sharp as hell and easy to use. Best thing that has happend to my modeling. THANK YOU for the review. 👍👍👍👍
Finally got around to watching this video. Really appreciate the time and effort you put into it. You when the extra mile with the camera work. Very helpful. I will definitely refer back to this when I am ready to upgrade.
Got to be the finest review of nippers around AND i can not see it being bettered. All the brands that have been mentioned but not shown on other reviews and THEN SOME! and all paid for by yourself, incredible, thank you for the great work much appreciated
Thank you friend. I did my best picking out the best choices for reviewing. Took a few weeks to get them. And still I get "You forgot this brand". But I'm doing my best here to put up great content. Thanks for watching
Yet another great video. I bought the MicroMark nippers based on your old video way back. They arrived and were defective although they still preformed better than my Xuron. I contacted MicroMark and they are sending me a replacement pair. Good to see that they still compare favorably.
Great content! With tools you usually get what you pay for, but you never know. That’s why a video test like this is so valuable!
Took me a few days to get through the video but wow! Thank you so much for the depth and breadth, really appreciate it. Great video.
This was a delightful video! I have been building models for many, many years and a good sprue cutter (or cutters) is an essential tool. I have had a set of the "Precision Sprue Cutters" (the ones that look like tweezers) for over 15 years and they are still sharp and going strong! I save them for very fine parts and I try to treat them with care. That's the real trick of sprue cutters. I use a lot of different media in my building and NOTHING will ruin a nice cutter like using it for wire or other metal (bloody obvious, but it had to be said). I admit that I do use some xuron cutters that I buy cheap for wire trimming wire parts. Your review was very interesting. I have tried a few of those brands and I will probably end up trying a couple more :-) The only problem with a review like this is that there is no way to follow up on blade life. It's worth buying the expensive cutters if the blades hold up. I'm looking forward to more tool comments and reviews.
THIS is quality content. This is exactly the kind of video I was looking for. Thanks for putting the time into doing this. Because I was really curious to know what are the best snippers out there. All I did was buy some random brand from a Hobby Lobby store. And was wanting an upgrade. And didn’t know if I should just go for a Citadel or there is something better out there.
Thanks for the content!
Thanks for watching my friend 👍
Your timing is impeccable. I was in the market for a new pair of nippers and I watched your video. I have ordered a pair of Dspiae, they look awesome. This channel has been a great help to me. Keep up the good work!
Thank you, timing is everything 👍great nippers, you will be happy with them
I couldn't bring myself to buy one of the $30+ nippers, so I went to Home Depot and picked up a Klein Tools "precision flush cutter" for $12.99. I love it. My Dad always said if you like a tool you'll use it more, and I love these nippers. Thanks for the great review!
For me, it really boils down between the Godhands and the Micro Mark. While the Godhand seems to be perfect for getting the stubs as short as possible without any additional work. They both offer extremely great performance. The Micro especially offers little to no discoloration from your testing, and even though it might not allow to you to cut as short as the Godhand, every gunpla builder will realistically be doing sanding work anyways.
Used your coupon code and have a Micro Mark pending fulfillment. Thank you so much for your help!
Absolutely great choice. I've been using Micro Mark for 2 years now and they perform as good as any. You will be pleased with them. Thanks for watching
Honestly, I’m gobsmacked! The BEST nipper shootout I’ve seen on YT. You gotta stop apologizing about your camera work. To be honest, I didn’t really think I’d be all that into it, but it was really interesting. And, for real, will be THE reference to watch for a looong time to come. Thank you again!
Thank you for that great feedback. I am trying my best with what I have while trying to put out the best content I can. Thanks again
3 or 4 of the best ones are available locally to me. I will probably pick what's cheapest. The top tier ones all seemed pretty. I've been wasting a lot of time cleaning up after my cheap nippers. Very helpful video! Thank you.
Great review and great selection. I'm hopping onto Amazon right now. Thanks for the time put in on so many options
I really appreciate the time and effort you put in to your reviews. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for another quality content sir! This will really help a lot of people. 😁
Great comparison. Thanks, I hadn’t seen the single blade type in action before. It really is a game changer.

Those DSPIAE nippers are pretty damn cool. Going to look into them, the Micro Marks, and the WisePros. Going to make some purchases with your links of what I can find. Definitely picking up those sponges!
I just posted a coupon code for the Micro Marks so don't forget to use if you get a pair. Get the Dspiae sand sponges at my friends site www.gundampros.com

Thanks for sharing and saving me a nice chunk of change since i don't have to buy a lot this stuff. Great idea providing links to the action. I'll be getting some of these tools for my use and collection. If you can afford it, get multiples of the ones you like, and get your mojo goin on. Barbatos Rex is one of my favorites RUclips channels. Always love your videos.
Thanks buddy, I appreciate the kind words 👍
Great review, until I bought a good pair I had no idea the difference good nippers make. I love and swear by my DSPIAEs, they cut like $60 god hands for half the price and are far less fragile, and leave almost nothing to clean up.
I just watched your video till the end, and went to eBay and purchased a set of Dspae to sit beside my Tamiya cutters.
I really respect your advice and love your vids.
I’m currently building the 1:200 Titanic after just getting back into the hobby after 40 years.🤔
Thank you and best wishes from Tasmania.
A warm hello from the USA 🖐️
Nice review and I greatly appreciate your efforts on this! Just an FYI, the two springs in the Zoukei Mura nipper container have different tensions allowing you to select a lighter or heavier compression. I picked up mine directly from the Zoukei Mura folks at an IPMS Nationals show a couple of years ago and love them!
Yeah those are a great cutter for sure
I've got a pair of Godhands and Dspiae 3.0 along with a $6 pair of Bandai nippers for the thicker gates. I think I'm gonna add a pair of Tamiyas to my bench after watching this though. Great shootout. Your videos have been influencing and informing quite a few of my tool and paint purchases. Thanks for all the great content.
Thanks buddy 👍
This is so useful, thanks so much for the time and effort (and money) sunk into this - Incredible!
Check out my updated video test on these
I was laughing so hard as you said that the video will be longer than the lord of the rings trilogy. Thank you very much for this review. I also do hobby tool reviews (yet only reg. blog articles) and your videos are just great and more importantly, your reviews feel very honest and I really appreciate that. A quick recommendation if you plan an update video: Look also for 3.peaks (MK-02, SPN-145S, KPN-125G-S, ...). Also: Single blade nippers are meant to be used and aligned with the blunt side touching the outside border of the part when cutting the remaining nub mark (thats why the Fujiya and some other single blade nippers delivered a rough result on the parts where as the round gates have been fine. They have been used the wrong way, while this fact to place and use them in a specific way restricts single blade nippers in some usage situations).
Great review. Personally I use the Redgrassgaming set, and those are amazing to use. Really good to see a comparison with all of these though.
Just wanted to say thanks for the video, I grabbed a Micro Mark nipper and it's super nice.
You videos are so informative. Thanks for sharing you knowledge
The performance of the cutters changed dramatically when you moved away from the first kit with the blue plastic. The attachment points of the blue plastic were three or four times as large as the attachment points of the red plastic.
Outstanding - just what I was looking for!!
The single action Creos is a great brush and a great buy - you'll dig it.
Been using regular nippers for years but man switching to godhand recently and it just saves so much time! The cuts are so clean, I don’t even use the my hobby knife anymore.I want to try the dspiae though!
Most of these were great for sure. But the top of the list for sure is Dspiae, Godhand, Micro Mark and the handful of others. A must own tool for all model builders
Just got the Dspiae nippers. Well worth the money. I was using the Xurons with not good results. The Dspiae are really smooth. Thanks for the informative video!
The Dspiae nippers are terrific. Good choice
Thanks buddy. Just going for the Godhand one.
Great choice
Thanks for the video! Great work!
When I worked as a machine operator for a fairly large US plastic injection molding company, the Xuron 170-II's were what we used to trim plastic parts fresh out of the press. For huge runners we used the 2175 Maxi-Shear from Xuron. Consequently those are what I've always used for modeling. I buy the 170-II's in batches of three or four. They do wear out over time. I'm not really sure what the difference is between the 410 and the 170-IIs other than handle color!
Hardness of the cutters I think. Some Xurons will cut hard metal like steel, while others should only be used to cut soft metal like copper. I think the blade angle also can differ depending on what is to be cut.
Thank you for expend so much money and time to show us this huge number of nippers.
I have been using for 6 years the games workshop for some tamiya kits and almost allways for warhammer kits.
I dont know if you know them(warhammer), have huge gates in the nubs and i fear that the good nippers as godhand gonna break with games workshop kits
Thanks for this video, exactly what i was looking for.
Focus tip: Use the packaging from the product your testing/reviewing, the camera can't focus on a black background,
it needs some texture to focus and at the same time your showing which product it is.
Dispae for $30-35 amazing. Why tf did I spent $60 for God hands…gonna return them. Also, God hands 2.0 single blade cut as good as spn 120 and they are only $30.
I liked this video 😄
Thank you my friend. The Dspiae are really nice and I use them every day.
Those Citadel cutters, I tried using them in the Citadel shop when I was deciding whether I could model or not. I'm disabled, only one of my hands work, the medication I have to take makes my hands sweat really badly (I went from not being sweaty at all to sweating buckets, it's mostly water rather than actual sweat though so it's weird. I'm not smelly sweaty just drippy sweaty 😂) and I kept dropping the cutters. I gave up in the end and broke the pieces out of the sprue with my hand and my nose... Still a better finish on the pieces than the Citadel cutters which is a shame, I like the look of them and the colour is unique and interesting but as Jason Knight (Master Bladesmith) "asthetics are secondary to function". Maybe Citadel should get a Master Bladesmith to look over their cutters!
Wow thank you for this. by far the most nippers in one vid. keep up the good work
Thanks buddy, many more vids to come. Tonight I'm posting 28 different spray can primer test.
Thank you so much for everything you have put up. They are awesome and super informative. Please keep up the good work. One question I have regarding gunpla is the painting process. Example. Should I prime, paint, top glosscoat, panel line, gloss varnish in this order or can preshade eliminate the need to panel line and in turn save a few extra layers of Clearcoat? A video of ur entire paintain process would be great. Thank in advance and keep up the good work
The steps you listed are correct however you could skip the last top coat unless you have decals. I prefer matt coats on my Gunpla but you will need a glossy coat for the panel lining. That being said, preshading would eliminate the need for panel lining as it takes its place on kit
This video, you really went above and beyond. I use the Citadel nippers and I am glad you found all of the same problems I'm having. I thought it was me, lol! On top of everything, one of the blades on mine is not 100% straight and the axle has just a little play so one blade rides on top of the other. Not good for the money. I'm saving up for some of the best ones you tested.
You won't regret it, money well spent
Excellent review. I’ve got a discount coming at MM, so I’m going to get them. Thanks
Great job mate, super mega ultra comparative, a lot of work.
Performance + cost + shipping cost, obviously different markets give different availability and situations. DSPAE and others in the comparison are best buy on AliExpress (cheaper), I suggest you, if you still don't know the brand, take a look at UStar products (Taiwanese), they have a very wide and interesting catalog, with quality/price - medium/high compared to Chinese cheaper products. The Chinese DSPAE has an interesting Tamiya copy carving-chisel line. My Trumpeter clipper is single blade, same price as MicroMark, maybe finished a little better, however regardless of budget I think 25$ is the cap for a clippers, there are so many tools to put on the bench that you would have to be a millionaire to get only AAA like Godhand/Mr.HOBBY/Tamiya tools. Cheers 🍻
Thanks for the review! I just bought the wisepro's yesterday right before I fell upon your review. Glad they seem to be a nice pair. I'm always trying to look for a good cheaper set of single edge nippers as well. The micro marks I've seen go for as low as $16 from their website a while back. Bummer I didn't jump on them. I think the sweet spot is around $25-$30 for a single edge nipper now.
Wisepro is a great choice. Also check in the description, I posted a 10% off code for Micro Mark, making them close to $20, a great price for them. Also you can use the code for anything on the site
Thanks!!! ... found and ordered them on the Volks USA store website ...
Im using citadel. The best one. And its ok to handle for me. Thx for review.
That is the exact same reaction I have when I use the Godhand nipper for the first time! But beware to use it with care as it is fragile, I dropped mine on the floor and broke it.. and I bought another two hahaha.
I've been using the Hobby Lobby brand side cutters best $6 bucks ive spent .
No issues still sharp !
Great test! I normally use nail clippers that you can get at the dollar store. They cut as well as the $30 cutters, so I won't be changing them for any cutter you tested. I would like to see this test run on model kits with relatively large sprues, like Roden or Hobby Boss kits. Those are always difficult to work with.
I see you picked up some if the culture hustle black & chrome. Can’t wait to see the chrome. Also, I’m curious if black 3.0 will work as a black base for metalizers. ✌🏼
This is a general comment, thank you for the money saving tips! Had a blast at Dollar Tree!🤣
Merci d'avoir pris de votre temps pour tester toutes ces pinces .
Cette vidéo va être utile à beaucoup de maquettistes (moi inclus)
🤘
Great video as always Rex! Thank you for the wide range of comparisons! Oh and to update you on how the rustoleum painter’s touch aluminum spray can as a base for alclad’s candy color it works, but I had to decant the paint in order to achieve the results I wanted. It sprayed too much paint out of the can so after decant and pouring it into my airbrush I was able get smoother results on the parts. 👍
That's awesome, I will try that.
@@barbatosrex9473 I forgot to mention I thinned it a little with mr. color leveling thinner just a little bit.
@@barbatosrex9473 also be sure you mix enough paint the first time. I didn’t mix enough and when I mixed a second pot to finish a shield piece it caused the first layer to lift because 1. I didn’t let it completely dry, and 2. I guess the ratios were a little different. 😂 luckily it was only on a shield piece. Lesson learned.
@@blue4life175 you are correct, always over prep the paint. Nothing worse than spraying and running low in the middle of a job
I just use the flush cutters that came with my 3D printers that are very similar to the blue ones you use, I sharpen them well every couple of months and they work just fine
How do you sharpen them? i don’t have much experience sharpening knives but i tried sharpening my valtcan nippers and couldn’t get them sharper than godhand
I’m glad I saw this one before buying.
the great nipper war..........salute you man for finding other non big brand ones ..
I did my research 😉
Great review. Really appreciate it.
Thanks for watching!
I own a pair of micro mark cutters. They cut good, but do leave stress marks n there’s still clean up. Defeats the purpose of $20+ cutters. This is one subject in the hobby that people just over complicate on.
Awesome information video! Thank you again for doing this reviews! I am planning to purchase another nipper and I am been watching on RUclips all the reviews of different nippers. You did an excellent work for doing all the different kinds in one video. It really saved me the time for searching. What would you recommend the type of oil can I use to maintain my nippers? What do you use? Thanks!
Use a tool oil or a silicone oil
Thank you for your afford.
Very nice test, I think it would have been easier for you (and us) in a 2 Camera setup. The good Camera at a fixed focus point for the close shots and even a smartphone came could have worked for the cutting action.
Keep on doing what you do, never thought I would watch a video someone cutting sprues with nipper for one hour seven.
😉
The MK1 of the citadel clippers were good. The current production doesn't have the same fine tip. (Found out due to thinking I'd accidentally thrown mine in the bin and ordered a replacement set. The originals came in a moulded box which I loved for storage)
Great vid, thanks for sharing!!! 👍👍👍

should have seen your video before I purchased my VRC Hobbies, anyway I hope won't be disappointed.
19:23 just got these because your video only pair in my city I could find other than the citadel expensive nippers
Best nippers i have are actually nail nippers that cost me 2.75 .. Almost ALL hobby stuff is overpriced except oddly gudam pens haha
Nail cutters are usually curved and tue direction the grip is with the blades make them bad to cut runners or pieces off them
@@alot9917 some are not all, you need a straight one to cut the side of your nail, curved ones cut into the cuticle
Very nice video about clippers of all type and brand really helpfull i wanna buy one time a tamiya sharp side because i have at this time only revell
You should watch Paul Budzik channel scale model workshop he gives a great explanation of different types of cutters. Btw he is a master model builder. Those high end use a blade and anvil type cut that is why the parts don’t go flying across the room. They slice not chop like the lower end ones.
Great reviews and love your channel. I will Support your channel watching all the commercial and pressing likes all the ways 👍👍😁
I appreciate that, I need all the help I can get in support of the channel. Thank you so much
@@barbatosrex9473 you're welcome
I had the Micro Mark nippers on my wishlist already. Nice to know it was a good choice.
Between them and the Tamiya, it seems like $30 is really the point of diminishing returns.
I got the dispae ones at Xmas and they are amazing imo, I had xuron before but the dispae ones are so good I wouldn't use them on full sprues though
I've got the Tamiya 123 and they're great - the blades are long and thin and let's you get into crowded sprues. They're forged, not stamped like Xuron and that's more important than one or two blades. God Hand's are excellent if you can get at the part properly. I had bad luck with the Dspiae.
That's exactly my experience. The Tamiyas are excellent but the blade of the Dspiae is too fragile.
Hi, I love your painting tips, techniques and skills. Quick question, do you ever prepare your plastic spoons before primer or paint, for example wash in warm soapy water to remove mold release residue or similar?
I don't however I really should. I rub them with a tack cloth sometimes and I blow them off with airbrush air. But now that you mention it I'm going to start doing that even though I haven't had many problems there's been a few times it's caused trouble. I have an ultrasonic cleaner and I will put them in there a day before I test paint. Thanks for reminding me about this and thanks for watching
I currently have the citadel nippers.
I didn't know any better.
I'm getting some godhands, and I'll be using the citadels just to make sprue cuts from now on.
the blades don't always align and they will gouge down into the model.
The tweezer type at 25:20 are best for very delicate parts that the shock of larger clippers would break. I used them a lot on ship mast parts.
Yeah those will come in handy for sure. It's one of the test pairs here I'm going to keep
Tsunoda makes great tools in general. I was pleased to see that they also produce GodHands.
I have the other Tamiya side cutters. I think I will purchase the madworks or beaditive orpro zetsu nippers for a spare.
Good job man. Dspiae sold out everywhere. I might give the micromark a try
True, they are selling out. But I use my Micro Marks everyday. Use my coupon code "barbatosrex" on their site for a discount
@@barbatosrex9473 I will for sure. Thanks man.
Xurons were my first nippers really, I think I got them at harbor freight? Maybe hobby lobby. Either way, I used them for quite a few kits before I got Tamiya nippers, I still have em for hogging off large sections of sprue.
I believed your prior recommendation for micro mark and got some! This is a nice comparison of products.... but what are you gonna do with 20 nippers?!?! Hahaha
Just bought the mm nippers for those really small armor parts. Thanks for the coupon.
Great choice, those are my go to nippers.
@@barbatosrex9473 I love them it takes absolutely no effort to cut, it was shocking how sharp they are.
wow! so amazing!👍🤩
Also, maybe a table top tripod for an over head view and just cut on the table would look good. And would probable make things easier for you as well.
