- The 2G network is almost gone...forever.
2G Deadline: There has been a recent update by T-Mobile about the 2G shutdown: "While we have not yet established an exact date, we will notify you in advance when we plan to retire T-Mobile's older 2G (GSM) network." This means the network shutdown could very well happen at anytime this year, though the original April 2nd deadline has been pushed back. Once an official date is set, I'll update here.

2G shut off back in 2018 here in Australia. My carrier shut of 3G at the beginning of February this year and it truly is sad to see. It's depressing to see phones that once dominated the market, now not even being able to connect to a carrier network anymore.

Actually T-Mobile suspended the 2G shut down until further notice so it will live past April
Yeah, there are too many devices still running on it. It’s mostly IOT and M2M stuff, but there’s a few phones still working on 2G.
@@93Volvo240 I guess they do feel some responsibility given so many old devices which formerly ran on other networks had to be switched to run on T-Mobile because they were the only ones with working 2G.

@@axa897 If you're in a tense emergency situation and your main phone is not working, and all you have is a super old phone tucked away in a drawer, it's important that it can still be used to access emergency services. This is very sad, as I've used 2G not too long ago in areas of Missouri where not even 4G is able to reach. I'm willing to support 5g, but not until i can get coverage that i can rely on... That was once 3g here... It would just work, and I'd always be connected to get the minimum i need for an emergency calling and texting. If AM radio can stay, then 2G should too.
The reason you get trusty old 3g always reliable in remote areas, while 4g not so much, is because network operators don't bother investing in expensive equipment upgrades in areas with no users. If the regulators force them to commit to switching off the 3g network however, then the operators are forced to make those investments. In theory, 4g should be a strict upgrade over 3g operating on the same frequencies.
If 2G shutting down then AM radios likely next then Since it's so old

Seeing Edge on your phone is the equivalent of "no internet here, fuck off and touch grass"
Ahahaha 😂 @@zephyrus3568
Edge can stream Spotify no problem
2G is faster, than most of you think. If it‘s about classic EDGE, you have around 230 kbit/s download and around 118 kbit/s upload. But if it’s about Evolved EDGE, you whizz through the Internet with a top speed of 1,2 Mbit/s download and 700 kbit/s upload, which is way faster than 3G (UMTS). Spotify, internet researching and texting is already with classic EDGE no problem at all.
why did they shut down 3g first tho
3G phones can fallback on 2G, but not the other way around. Also, 2G requires significantly less bandwidth than 3G. Lastly, millions of IOT devices, and M2M connections rely on 2G. GSM is cheap, simple, easy, and is usually sufficient for basic communication.
to free some cell sites for better LTE capacity
Because 3G devices can just fallback to 2G and also, 3G wastes much more bandwidth (5-10 MHz), while 2G can be continued to operate inside the 4G/5G guard band.

I live in russia, and I collect iPhones. And I have great news for y'all! 2G, 3G and LTE is still supported here. It's still very sad to see 2G and 3G go away in America, cuz I have many friends in America, that enjoy collecting iPhones too. Anyways, great video iClassic, as always!
And it most likely would, because there are places where it does not make any sense to not use 2G's range.
подтверждаю.
@@aavvironalex The range of the signal is a function of the frequency it is transmitted at, it's not a special property of 2g that is has longer range than 3g or anything. If you transmit both LTE-A and 2g at 1800 MHz, the 4g one should have the same range or better and be significantly faster due to improved protocol, signal processing, hardware etc. the combined developments of 30+ years since 2g was introduced.
The main reason 2g/3g are still going strong in remote areas is because network operators don't bother to invest in upgrading their equipment in areas with few users.
In Russia, likely they will be using 2g+3g for many, many years to come, because they're too busy spending all their oil dollars on missiles to bomb their neighbour and not investing in national infrastructure - especially in remote regions.

2G was great for emergency calls in low coverage areas. This is a loss.
We really need 2G to stay! I’d even argue we need to keep 3G!!
Why
Here in India, airtel shut down 3G in 2019 and Vodafone-Idea followed suit sometime later. Jio was 4G only from the beginning. Now, Jio is asking the government to consider shutting down 2G and 3G across the country for all operators. Only BSNL has 2G and 3G available as they do not have pan-India 4G services yet.
Pakistan still has everything. 3G, 2G, 4G.
All options should be available. I don’t see why they are doing away with it other than for control
In Malaysia, 3G was discontinued at the end of 2021 and 2G still running in 2024. There is no deadline for 2G yet for any telco in Malaysia. The only telco that runs on 4G and 5G was Yes and Unifi which doesn’t have fallback to 2G and 3G Networks.
5G has reached at least 80% coverage in Malaysia and 4G is between 80% and 97% coverage depending on telco itself. Unifi have the smallest coverage with local roaming on Maxis network when exit from Unifi coverage area while Yes is second smallest network. Largest network was CelcomDigi followed by Maxis and then U Mobile.

Yeah. My old phone wasn't compatible with VoLTE so it got back to either 3G or 2G to make the call, but this shutdown will make ALL non VoLTE phones... Well let's just say that it's just like having an iPod where we added 4G Data but not the phone part
Exactly. A lot of things besides smartphones use 2G to function. Without it, they’re rendered useless.
You shouldn't be using security devices on the 2G network anyway. So which devices that don't fall in that category are still in operation?

The 3g network shutting down was quite annoying for me. I used an iPhone 4s up until they shut off 3g, which I really liked. Now I use an iPhone 8, which I really don't like. It is thinner, and the screen is too big. It also doesn't have a headphone jack and the 30 pin connector is gone replaced with a lightning connector. I really wish you could get a reasonably sized phone these days, but they are all huge.
Your best chance would be to find an iPhone 13 mini.
@@felixg3 The screen size of that is 5.4 inches, WAY too big. I understand that it is less bezel, so it is likely smaller or around the same size, but about 4" is about all that I am wanting to go. The iPhone 4s was a perfect size. I was thinking maybe a 1st gen SE, it is 4" which I think I could like with, and it has a headphone jack; and I am really not willing to buy a phone without one.
@@felixg3Not to mention that a used one goes for over $300, which is way too much for me to justify spending on a phone. I really only do calling and texting, and playing music on the phone, and pretty much that is it. I may snap a picture here and there, but that is about it.
What happens when the highspeed data runs out? The phone always goes to 2G speed.
When you run out of high speed data in a data plan, your phone does slow down to 2G speeds, but it does NOT actually connect to the 2G network. If you ever use up all your data, you’ll notice that you’ll still most likely have “LTE” or “5G” next to your signal bars. If it connects to 2G, you’ll see either “2G”, “G”, (which stands for GPRS), E, (which stands for EDGE), or, if by some miracle you are near a working CDMA tower, you’ll see 1X, (short for 1xRTT). Same for 3G. Sadly, the 2G network, at least in the USA, doesn’t have the capacity anymore to be able to handle all the devices people use.
@@93Volvo240Ok that's good to know. I try not to run out because its slow as dirt. The phone is barely usable without high speed data.

Hell no :D Here in Czechia the providers have to specifically support your phone for VoLTE to work (unlike in the USA, you dont have to rely on providers to buy phones .. electronic stores sell them just like any other appliance .. you dont even have to go to a store that only carries a certain brand.. normal electronic stores sell a whole variety ... if 2G goes away you could end up with a brand new phone that cant make or receive calls in this country.

I remember that there was a news article in my country that was also speaking about 3G shutting down that also went on about medical devices, they spoke about a general shut down so not specifically only T-Mobile, it's odd why they're doing this is the space isn't needed, the antenna's sending out the old signals are not compatible with 5G signals so it's a generally weird situation

ik some people will add 4g capability to these older phones
Maybe really old phones, but even then, not likely. The cellular MODEM is often tied to the rest of the phone’s logic board, so adding one in isn’t so easy. Lately people have been using software defined radios to make small cellular base stations that their phones can connect to. The good thing about those is that you can program them to work on almost any cellular frequency and mimic any carrier. Sadly, CDMA base stations are still not really available because Qualcomm controls the use of CDMA technology very tightly. AMPS, GSM, UMTS, and even LTE are totally doable though.
