Poplar Wood cut into 1-1/2" strips, glue together using pipe clamps. Boards are 1" thick shelf dimensions are 31- 1/4" Wide and 13-1/4" Deep, this shelf is mounted directly to the original factory shelf, this allows the shelf to hing in a raised or lowered position. I used 1/2" wood screw to mount and pre-drilled the hole with a metal drill bit. This ensures the boards do not split or crack. Use the planer, palm sander and a router to get a smooth finish. I used a palm router to get the beveled edge on the sides. I melted the beeswax in the butcher block oil on the stove top then let is set and cool to become a wax again. I apply a generous coat at least once a month to ensure the surface stays in good shape. I always to to apply a little bit of wax on the top part closets to the smoker after each use due to the heat of the smoker I do not want the wood to become brittle or warp, it probably doesn't need this but I am always cautious. Definitely buying this smoker as soon as my budget allows.. and I love doing mods like this. One question though.. have you had any issues with temperature consistency and accuracy? I heard that it was a common problem and was wondering if you’ve experienced it.
As a whole no, not really, however there are hot spots like most all smokers. You can find those with a can of biscuits.

Did you put different mounting brackets on the shelf, or did you use existing/stock shelf brackets?
I used the existing ones that came with it.
