If it is not working for you this is why. Make sure you have selected the layer (click on where it say layer, next to the dog), not the image. This is the key. Now you can simply paint off with a brush or use a gradient tool. If you paint it, black (now I have to go listen to the song) you make it transparent. If you paint white, you bring back the image.

For anyone who still confused about this I found what works for me is once you've applied the fade right click on the vector masks itself in the layer section and click apply layer mask. You should be able to open up another layer mask and fade it again

For anyone that's still having trouble after all this time, make sure that after you've created your vector mask that you then click on the mask it created down where your layers are (it should be the white box to the right of the actual layer you want to fade).
If you don't select your mask instead of your image, it will just turn out as a solid colour gradient when you try to fade it. I'm not sure why this vital information was omitted in the video, but as long as you follow along and make sure you select your mask once you've created it then the tutorial works just fine.

100% facts you also have to click on the mask when using the gradient. and if you want to only gradient on parts of the image use the select tool, put a box around the area then gradient fade
