We start by creating a new document and placing an image into it. Then we choose an initial color for the background, and fade the image into the color using a layer mask. Finally, I show you how to change the background to any color you like, including how to choose a color directly from the image itself.

Hi everyone, Steve here. Thanks for checking out this video where I show you how easy it is to fade an image to black, white or any color background with Photoshop. We start by creating a new document (0:23) and placing an image into it (1:04). Then we move the image to one side (1:42), add a Solid Color fill layer (2:05) and fade the color into the image using a layer mask (2:52). Once the main effect is done, I show you how easy it is to change the color (6:14) and how to make any final adjustments to where the image and the color are fading together (7:20).

I couldn't get it to work....my picture on the right faded on the far right of the picture and not the left...
I did all of the steps exactly how you did, but when I use the gradient tool and drag & release, it just stays white. What can I do to fix this?

I am having the same issue. I select the layer mask. I can see the layer mask is selected. I use the gradient tool and the layer remains completely white.
