  • In this Photoshop tutorial, learn how to fade an image to transparent in Photoshop. You can fade images by using layer masks in Photoshop. We can add a gradient to the layer mask or paint with the brush tool to create image transparency in Photoshop.

A big thank-you - I've watched many videos, both via RUclips and Online Learning and this is the first time the explanation of layer masks has made sense to me. The dialogue around the 1:45 mark really resonated with me to the point of 'hallelujah, finally I get it!'
What has bambozzled me all this time is the term 'mask'. Masks go in front of something to hide it. I now think of a layer mask as a foundation to the image. Just like a normal set of paints, the best thing to use is white paper to bring out all the colours. Where there is no paper, represented by black, there is no colour because the paint has nothing to sit on.
The transition from paper to no paper is represented by the gradient going from white paper ( full colour ) to no paper ( no colour, black)
My very rudimentary photoshopping skills have just made a quantum jump. All thanks to you Martin. All the best to you and your endeavours.

This was absolutely fantastic. This is literally THE clearest, best demonstration I have EVER SEEN, out of the dozens I have looked at explaining how to do something in Photoshop!

Nicely done. Thank you. Very clear explanations reinforced with the practical. Love it. Simple things such as adding colour to a layer you balance clarity and speed nicely creating a good learning experience. Thank you

This must be a PS 2023 tutorial because my set up does not look like that. We don't get the gradient bar on the image nor do we get the gradient options to the right

You cannot use png on FB. They will convert it to jpg. File>export>png on Photoshop.

Thank you, but this was a mask tutorial, I don't think it has much to do with how to make transparent
