Thank you for this video, and thank you for that detailed description. I was really confused when I had 42% items, and this description and video really cleared that up. I’m not restarting the level tho, too much a hassle. I’ll consider that 42 a 100 for my own sanity lol
Yeah. I still remember, that it definitely had an impact to the sanity, when trying to come up with some kind of a solution, since I had already started to do these videos with this particular goal. Sadly, even after figuring out this particular level, I stumbled on a different level, which had a simpler, but not-so-obvious solution to it, so that I ended up with just 97% items instead of 100%, heh. But I'm glad, that this video was helpful in any case.
@@FinSompi Which level did you end up with 97% items? Today I completed the game with 100% everything on all 40 levels and the only issue I had was on this level.
@@geteriking4865 It was map 30 (The Lair), where you had one of the health potions in a corner on a slightly elevated space, which you couldn't pick up without lowering that said space. I figured it being a bug at the time and thought it having been placed in an unreachable spot (because I started playing the whole thing through, when it was released on Steam) and there weren't any secrets missing, so I gave up on it too quickly. When you went through two windows in the same location, that space lowered and a wall opened behind the elevated space, revealing a plasma gun behind there. And that also gave you the access to the health potion, that I couldn't reach otherwise. When I found out about that trigger and weapon closet, I was surprised it not being a secret, because that had such a secretive trigger and also a reward fitting for one.
@@FinSompi Yea I know that level. So you know how to get 100% on level 30 but just couldn't get it back the right? I was looking at the Classic Doom channel for Items and Secrets.
Thank you for this! I couldn't find any other guide online on how to get 100% items for this. I now have gotten that 100%! These pillars are so wonky! I kept seeing different oddities, like a couple of times the middle skinny part would be up but the outer part would be down, and once I somehow got all pillars closed except one while the soulsphere was shuffling. I'm hoping somebody will someday look into the code and find out exactly what makes these things tick!
You're welcome! Yeah. I still (vaguely) remember having some of those oddities... I think sometimes you were able to position yourself in certain way, that only one part was blocked, but not another.. (Or Lost Soul could block part of it too) * At least generally in Classic Doom / Doom 64 and with its lowering ceiling-parts / raising floor-parts could be blocked in such a way, that if the moving part was made of two different sectors, but your player-hitbox would block only one of those sectors.. - Part #1 of the blocked sector would go up/down, but... - Part #2 of that sector would hit player-hitbox and it'd go back to the other direction at a wrong time (or keep trying to go to the supposed direction, until blocking thing was removed, allowing it to continue motion.) In some (custom) maps, this often can break lifts, doors or other moving surfaces, if they're not joined sectors or the author isn't aware of such possibility in general, which could end up allowing player to break the map and getting stuck, for example. I think I remember also seeing 'mirror-effect' once too, for missing texture, when skinnier part went up, but center part stayed down and I was inside there. (It might be due to timing of things, when stuff hasn't fully reset and/or you've been able to push the button.)
Does anybody know if this works on the actual N64 version? Because judging by the color of the medikit this is a later release. And it doesn't seem to be working for me on the actual N64.
I managed to get the floor down, spawn the Supercharge there and then stay on the edge to block the ceiling, but no matter how many times I attempted, the Supercharge didn't appeared. Is there some trick?, am I missing something?, is just random and I have TERRIBLE luck?
It's getting very hard to remember any of the details of this puzzling mechanism at this point, but every sequence was randomized, so the last place for the SS could be different. But it was quite random, how it worked for my favor at some specific attempt. I feel like the video gives you an idea and shows the end result, but at the same time it was hard to explain everything with just the footage alone... (not to mention it still remained partly a mystery, how all of it clicked together in the end) Also the other comments can also help to piece together some additional information of the whole process, on top of the video description. I believe it simply was to get that floor down, have the randomized appearing of SS start and then basically hope for the SS to stop at the pillar, that you were currently blocking. And after getting SS, finish the puzzle off by getting the Blue Key and then doing one more switch to get one armor piece to make it so, that no other armor pieces are left inside pillars. ...but perhaps some other player with a successful attempt can chip in to share the experience as well. I'm pretty sure I had to take much more than just one take of this thing... Scrapping the previous take, because it was taking too long and too many randomized attempts to go my way, if it ever even did, heh.
Even though it's been ages and I've forgotten most of this (nightmare), you basically have to break the thing, so that you can first pick up a Soulsphere and then activate switch to get an armor piece in such a way, that nothing gets left hidden inside the other platforms. To do it... yeah, you're blocking the correct one to get Soulsphere at ground level and then hope to be able to hit another switch for an armor piece, if I remember this one correctly, how the intended attempt went like. It can take a while, heh.
@@FinSompi So in a theoretical perfect run, you would only get 1 armor to make the pillar not go up and get lucky with the Soulsphere and after that just get that 1 armor and that's it? Or do you need to pick up more than 2 Armor Bonuses there? Also while trying to do this glitch in a single playthrough for some time, I got 76% of items, how does that happen?
@@geteriking4865 The intention was simply to make sure, that nothing will be left inside the pillars, while getting rest of the items from the rest of the level. With a little math, it became obvious, how the armor bonuses were left inside the pillars, which could be counted at the end of the level. I can't actually remember the total number of items in the level anymore, but I suppose the math would provide some kind of answer to that. But what I've noticed, that some of these remakes of the old engines don't tend to work 100% reliably all the time, so that's always a possibility as well. I just started playing Doom 3 BFG Edition (because it suddenly appeared in my library) and Doom 1 & 2 within that game. There, I noticed few occasions, where unexpected things happened that I haven't experienced in normal play after years of playing with the source ports. (BFG Edition seems very much vanilla Doom 1&2 that I haven't played for ages: Low fps, non-smooth animations, revenant has the extra pixel, when it attacks, etc.) I might still vaguely recall the similar percentage, tho.
@@geteriking4865 Also, I think the perfect run to aim for is pretty much going to be Soulsphere + 1x Armor Bonus from that room. Unless, I suppose you don't care about the Soulsphere, in which case you could do 'better', if you were able to do it with just one armor piece alone. : -) Hmm... But I think the point was also that the mechanism reaches the end after obtaining the Soulsphere, which would end the attempt. And this was another thing, which was part of the breaking process. I might remember some things wrong by now, tho.
@@FinSompi Ok I was finally able to do it, just got the bug with the pillar staying down to work and then saved and just reloaded until I got the Soulsphere in the right place.
Do you need to get the Soul Sphere once, or do you need to also get the second one you get by resetting the puzzle? Edit: Never mind, going after the second sphere locks you in the room.
What I remember from this (agonizing) map and the 'puzzle' itself, there was randomness involved with it, but also I believe it required you to have the platform down for the next spawn of Supercharge. Then you had to block the lowering upper part, and pick up Supercharge, when the mechanism stopped and allowed player to pick it up. I didn't even fully understand the inner workings of the whole thing back then, so there was still luck involved to get it successfully. (At least in my personal experience of it) And since it's been so long, I remember much less now, heh. I suppose the answer will be: As many as it takes you to get Supercharge and still get that armor piece from one platform. So, there couldn't really be a specific number of attempts to guarantee success.
@@FinSompiwould you do a short video explaining how to do the Supercharge puzzle with the 100% items successfully? The highest I've gotten completing the level was 81% items and very rarely would the bottom part of the one column stay down where I could just walk in it.
@@joes4a6 The thing with this column-section was that it worked so randomly even with the approach that I took, that I wasn't even 100% sure, if I was doing the right thing throughout the section or not. Instead, you should note the key-points of the video to achieve the goal of breaking the sequence. So: 1) Goal is to get Supercharge to spawn at column that is on ground level. You must block the column from closing and take Supercharge, and only then let it close. This will be random and might take a lot of tries. It's, why I basically hated this level to get 100% in it (I don't think there's a guaranteed way to it. It just happens, but you just have to see the opportunity and take it.) 2) You had to do one more switch to pick up random armor bonus, so that you clear rest of those columns by doing that. 3) Continue the level finding the rest of the stuff and finishing the level. If I applied the logic, picking up Supercharge normally would be the end of the puzzle, but because you end up getting it at unintended moment, the sequence can be done at the very least once more and you are able to clear the columns by despawning rest of the bonuses. And this way you should have nothing inside the columns, which is the crucial part, and then you can just finish rest of the level normally. I think that's the best explanation that I could conjure up at this point in time, in addition to, what's in description already. : -) Not sure, what else I could do with a video, if it still wasn't enough to get it done.
