I was there and enjoyed every second of it. Got chickenskin on Beirut, Trains and tears on my cheeks while they were playing in a Sentimental Mood. Fantastic guys, this was a SUPERGROUP. Amazing concert. RIP Michael and Chuck
When I watch this video over and over again, I see Michael having fun with what he is doing with the saxophone, just like everyone else who is on stage at that moment! It's priceless!
A few months before Steve Smith and Mike Stern came in. I saw a kind of pickup version of Steps Ahead many years later in Montreal, with Mainieri and Brecker and Jeff Watts on drums. One thing that was obvious was how much they loved playing this material.
Now this is one concert that I really would have liked to have attended. Thanks so much to RUclips, I can at least enjoy the second best thing - a video recording. By the way, I just marvelled at Michael Brecker when he transitioned from playing the EWI solo version of "In A Sentimental Mood" to "Trains". Just imagine having to play those too pieces back to back live!!!
@1:01:00 I cant believe how solemn the crowd is... altho I've read that europeans enjoy their music in this manner, i tend to think that, as humans, at least a small few in a large crowd are bound to break out in dance upon experiencing great music... simply as a natural, if not primal, reaction. Even if 'customs' says otherwise. I remain surprised at the calmness bc i'd be goin off! What a set!
If another take of the live recording at the Pit Inn Roppongi, Tokyo in 1981 is discovered, it will be called the discovery of the century. There will be no other "Tee Bag" performance with Steve Gadd at that time.
Best Erskine concert with his Grey Yamaha drums and simmons/linn drums , was there...amazing. The Steps Midi version;) This was at the Tuinpaviljoen at the Nsj...best sounding hall/tent ever, you hear all the bands like Shorter and Miles performing at there best because the sound and acoustic was magic, all wooden stage:) The Radio broadcast has much better sound!
I always knew my grandmothers were hip but I never knew the same people that made their kitchen tables made Maniari's axe. One had the yellow and one had the red.
Great music and memories. WOJ needed to use professional videographers. It looks like a high school production. Chuck is burning a solo and the camera is fixated on Michael not playing. Weird.
The sound is all over the place in this. The drums and sax are the loudest. I can hear the bass just fine though and I'm having a 70 dollar Bluetooth speaker
Such a shame!!!!! Such a great Band and Such a lousy camera work......they show us the wrong players while another one plays his solo......unbelievable
RIP Michael, Chuck Loeb, Victor Bailey, three of the most wonderful players
I was there and enjoyed every second of it. Got chickenskin on Beirut, Trains and tears on my cheeks while they were playing in a Sentimental Mood. Fantastic guys, this was a SUPERGROUP. Amazing concert. RIP Michael and Chuck
40 years later and it's still brilliant! Amazing
Michael Brecker is my favorit sax performer of all time. RIP
He was the best saxophonist of his generation and he played with the best of fusion giants, Steps Ahead, Pat Metheny, Uzeb and many others.
Nunca te olvidaremos Brecker. Tu legado seguirá hasta el fin del mundo.
Who’s still listening in 2022? I was there… amazingly fanatastic
Me too! 🙌✊
2024!!
I was not there, born in 89, but enjoying it a lot!!!
When I watch this video over and over again, I see Michael having fun with what he is doing with the saxophone, just like everyone else who is on stage at that moment! It's priceless!
One of my first jazz festivals. I was 23 and blown off by this fantastic performance!
Great musicians. RIP Michael and Chuck, we'll never forget you both

Incredible Musicians. 👏🏿👏🏿❤️
RIP Victor Bailey, Bassist Extraordinaire 🖤❤️
RIP my friend Chuck Loeb 🖤🤍
Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
The delight on Victor Bailey's face is wonderful to see. Surrounded by great musicians, what a thrill.
JUST WHAT I WAS THINKING WELL DONE
Grande Victor, anche Chuck, grande chitarrista! Che gruppo! Fantastico! Gli steps hanno segnato la storia della fusion anni 80-90!
I was there aswell great concert (in het Tuinpaviljoen) and super festival. North Sea Jazz in the '80es was incredible.
What year what is that exactly?
I remember this concert. I was mainly impressed by the play from Michael Brecker and vibraphonist Mike Mainieri.
what happen to Chuck Loeb? I guess he was lifted in those times by such musicians as Brecker and Steps ahaead in general....?
What?
I was there! Unforgettable ♥️
I was there and it was fantastic.

SUPERB late-stage offering from ALL the players! (Brecket STANDS OUT EVEN amongst these BRILLIANT fellow-jazz musicians!!)
this is a gem, never take it down!!!!
Oh my god, what a concert....
当時ラジオで放送されたものを録音して繰り返し聴いていました。マイケルのMCまでしっかり覚えている。
まさか映像があったとは!
My favourite band even now in 2020.Switzerland is here🇨🇭👍❤
Priceless even shedding tears super Band and the Great Ones here in Spirit but not Body anymore Michael Victor and Chuck Rest in Power
Steps Ahead and some of Weather Report in the same video! How cool!
What an incredible musicianship! It was so much fun hearing and seeing these tunes! Thanks for the upload and thanks to the wonderful musicians!
I've been listening to Steps Ahead since 1983 and have only heard them live once, in Wigan (UK) in 1999 with Bob Mintzer and Eliane Elias.
That would have been Bob Berg on Tenor sax not Mintzer.
@@mmee24 You could be right.

Young and amazing Bailey, incredible band! Thanks!!!
Incredible!!! Absolutely incredible!!! Thank you!

This is so phenomenally epic! This goes straight in my music history and historic concerts folder
I was there in the Hague. They blew my mind with "in a sentimental mood" and "trains".
What year was that exactly?
Je les avais vu à NICE FRANCE ! Assis derriere PETER ERSKINE ! fantastique formation de musiciens extraordinaires !
This is the best stuff ever!
Wow. i had no idea Chuck played with Steps!!! RIP Chuck and Michael
Thanks for posting this. I heard them in Pori jazz in Finland on the same summer. Great music, great team.
These guys were so ahead of their times.
Michael Brecker forever
Not only one reunion concert in 2005, but many, also in Italy and in Spain.
C'est magnifique. Merci.....
OMG! Thank you so much!!
Brilliant stuff ❤️❤️❤ ... And who knew Patrick Marber was such a badass on guitar?!
Mickael Brecker has a style recognisable between all

A young Chuck Leob on Guitar. This is 1985. 37 years ago. Rest in peace Victor bailey and . Mike Brecker. These were great music days back then
R.I.P Mr Bailey.
RIP Víctor Baley! 😢 Only the Good die young.... What a huge loss to the continuity of modern jazz bass repertoire and performance...

54:38 In a Sentimental Mood
As good as it got at ”the time”. Lots of new technology to integrate. The music still comes first
Erskine wasn't just a fill-in; he played with Steps Ahead for years after Steve Gadd did not want to stay with "Steps" after a brief Asian tour.
Do you know why he didn’t want to play with them?Gadd I mean
Erskine the best for steps
Best Erskine concert with his Grey Yamaha drums and simmons/linn drums , was there...amazing. The Steps Midi version;)

@@ewi4000 Thanks, got it!

Looks like they uploaded footage coming from only one of the cameras. Really sad, coz this is one heck of an Ensemble of Musicians.
Horrible camera!!!!! What a shame!!! How could camera man be so LAME!!!
Looking at this conveniently I would agree but looking at this intricately I wouldn’t agree 😃
Why the one filming , need to be so much time in their life faces.
