What a concert! What a formidable band! Bellissimo, grazie.. *.* Thank you very much! They seem to be particular artists and extremely virtuous .. a pleasure to listen to them, and to see them too!
Still watching and listening in the year 2020... Audiences are all ears, enjoying the music without distraction of taking video/photos using mobile phones
That's so true. I remember attending those shows like that decades ago. Now, I really don't like the idea of so many people standing in front of me, moving to the music and pointing their mobile phones above their heads towards the stage in an effort to get a good frame with that darn light beaming out from the displays. What an eye sore! Does anybody know if it's actually illegal to record live concerts and post them on social media? Or has that gone out the window?
Killer timing, every time I listen to, and even better, watch at the same time? These geniuses of Jazz/Funk never cease to leave me with an open jaw, and utter astonishment
Brings back some damn good memories ! Early 80's, Coyt road, Dallas Texas summer outdoor concerts grab some vino and a towels to sit on, Spyro , Pieces of a dream , Chuck Mangione , So many others was great times
Dayum! I’ve seen them twenty times. Always a great show and, for decades, almost fifty years now, always amazing music. Only got to see Dave Samuels once.
Well I did not expect to be listening to this group again in 2021, came across them by accident as a young teenager and thought I was the only one in the world to have found them at my age. A group I had long forgot about even after wearing out several tape cassette albums as life takes over. Glad to have found some videos of them and happy to be listening to them once again.
I kid you not, I've just been thinking about the same thing, just landed on the video by accident, then I remembered the first time I heard them, it was a cassette of their album. I thought to myself, what the heck was this! We were into George Benson, Earl Klugh, Jonathan Butler and Bob James at the time. Me and my Keyboardist were the only ones in school fascinated enough to listen to the tape over and over. This was in 1991. Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
Remember first hearing these dudes with a cousin of mine way back in the 80’s on an old reel to reel smoking some of that good herb. Man those were the good old days. But I digress, been a fan ever since. 😆
Copenhagen Jazz Funk Collective I agree. This is so fantastic. We're playing it also. Listen. Best from Copenhagen Jazz Funk Collective - Mads Pagsberg bass. Fender Jazzbass.
My Band had just played with them at the Houston Music Hall a few months before... A BLAST! Had fun with Richie and Gerardo! We all went and played at a jazz club in Houston after our Concert. 🙂 GREAT memories!
I saw Spyro Gyra perform live 3 times 1983, 2014 and 2017 plus Dave Samuels (RIP) with Caribbean Jazz Project in 2006, the music world miss this great musician.
Great set. 1. "Double Take" written by Jay Beckenstein, from 1986 "Breakout" 2. At 8:18, "Incognito" written by Tom Schuman, from 1982 "Incognito" 3. At 17:54 Intro of band members 4. At 18:30 Richie Morales drum solo 5. At 22:50 "Whirlwind" written by Dave Samuels from "Breakout" (Note: At 30:53, they zoom into Tom playing keyboards. Notice the play list taped to Tom's keyboard. I also see written down "Catching the Sun" before drum solo! Hmm) 6. At 32:05 "Del Corazon" written by Julio Fernandez from 1987 "Stories Without Words" 7. At 38:58 "Bob Goes To the Store" written by Kim Stone from "Breakout" 8. At 47:36 "Heliopolis" written by Jay from 1979 "Morning Dance" 9. At 1:00:56 "Morning Dance" written by Jay from "Morning Dance" 10: Encore at 1:07:36 "Shakedown" written by Jeremy Wall from 1985 "Alternating Currents"
Absolutely astounding! The late great Al Jarreau digging it from the audience! God bless our incredible vibraphone marimba virtuoso Dave Samuels! What an incredible band the legendary incredible synthesizer piano keyboardist Tom Schuman, world class vibraphone marimba player Dave Samuels, Julio Fernandez Kim Stone Richie Morales Manolo badrena and the legendary Jay Beckenstein
21 Copenhagen Jazz Funk Collective I agree. This is so fantastic. Listen. Best from Copenhagen Jazz Funk Collective - Mads Pagsberg bass. Fender Jazzbass.
Haha, wow, I was wondering why Dave’s marimba solo on Whirlwind was getting lower as he went left to right at 25:09, thought maybe the camera was mirrored or something. The I realized he was playing the marimba upside down (from the “back” side)! Genius player. RIP Dave, long live the rest of the guys! Always one of my all-time favorite groups.
Thank you for posting this performance! Brings back great memories of the Spyro Gyra show my wife and I went to, also in 1986, at North Sraub Park in St Petersburg FL. It was a free concert and from what I remember, more than 40,000 showed up. Also, Special EFX opened for SG. We were one of the first to show up and were right up front at the stage. Great concert!
I think Kim might agree this wasn't his best bass solo on his own tune (Bob Goes to the store). I saw him on this tour and he tore the solo in the tune to shreds. He's terrific, but everyone can't have a 110% night every night I guess. Except that Richie Morales man, that guy's a machine!
Many years after he was replaced enjoying the rippingtons I ran into Kim Stone he was sitting in with jazz piano great Rob Mullins at a small bar restaurant in Huntington Beach... One of those piano players who had the chops to spare but wasn't in the right place or the right time was always playing to about 50 to 100 people.anyway Kim Stone set in and we talked about his spyro-gyra days he called Tom Schuman the best-kept secret in jazz and music in general. I told him his bass work on the AAA live version of Conversations what is his best work--where he was playing the hundred-year-old stand up bass..."Yeah...man! We were FLYING 3 feet off the ground on that one!" I love seeing SPYRO more than a few nights on the same tour cuz the song setlist might remain pretty much the same but their solos were always very different Kim Stone was going for something a little different every night. People tell me J a y Beckenstein doesn't have it anymore well considering he's 70 now and he was onl 37 here I'd say Jay still has it and then some! It's interesting how Julio has refined his style over the years almost becoming a minimalist guitar player on purpose as opposed to the way he played back in the 80s and 90s. He has refined his sound in his playing now he doesn't have so much a Santana sound as more of a Larry Carlton or Lee Rittenour--not really there sound it's still Julio's sound but closer to that type of sound and Julio seems to be saying what he needs to say during his solos with a lot less notes, still able to fly but often doing that I can say more in OneNote than other guitar players can say in a thousand type thing.

I wonder what Miles Davis thought of Spyro Gyra? Miles is my favorite, but Spyro Gyra got me into jazz/jazz fusion.
