My uncle was the owner of Titania Television and the producer of this concert. He died of cancer in december 2019. He also did a lot of other live-recordings.
My condolences to you and your Uncle's family. My parents passed at the end of November 2019 also of Cancer. Are his live recordings on RUclips? Are they available to the public? Thank you to your Uncle for producing this amazing show. 🎶
During the song "Pools" (an amazing piece of musical art) when Michael comes in with his solo at 14:19, I almost fell off the chair! It's such an incredble sax solo with unbeliveable ensemble support, I started to cry. What a band!! Michael, R.I.P.
Well....if you're still around to get this....I wanted to just pass along that of his solo you're referencing, there's some very similar stuff in his work on "in the presence and absence of you #1, with claus ogerman orchestra; I think you'd be clearly more taken by that--it builds and builds and builds, just mesmerizing. I think it was done in the same year.
From early 2018 until somewhere in 2019, I have been unable to hear anything else than this solo. Still It induces me to that state, as it used to do back then. I love breckers solos, but i feel this one in particular has something special in it... If the devil allowed me to travel in time to see this concert in person, i would wish i had more than one soul to sell. Unfortunatly i have been born too late for this
I just listened to this video clip again for the 3-millionth time, only this time, on a pair of Bose Companion 20 speakers and WOW!!! Everything is so damn crisp and deep. Hats off to the recording engineer and production staff!!
I remember listening to these guys in high school. Then life happened. Now, 40 years later I can enjoy them again with video. Thanks so much to everyone who has uploaded these shows. It's really a modern miracle.
Best jazz band of the 80s (with Bass Desires) !! Fabulous tunes, fabulous improvs, playing, sound, musicality, chops, the lot. Thank you for making us vibe with you at such a high level of consciousness.
All great musicians! It's a pity that just few people know them! Lovely music! It's sad that Michael Brecker passed away too early... Eliane Elias is one of my favourite pianists and one of my favourite Brazilian musicians.
This sounds and songs used to be my teenager soundtrack in the 80' over here in Sao Paulo Brazil. There wasn't nothing like that...maybe never will...Thanks Mike, Eliane, Peter, Eddie and great Michael never will be forget.
Line up is: Michael Brecker, Mike Mainieri, Eliane Elias, Eddie Gomez and Peter Erskine - can you believe this was over 30 years ago. They sound so great.
Yes, I bought that first record about 30 years ago. Actually hadn't heard the group before then, but looking at the personnel I figured it had to be good...my expectations were vastly exceeded.
What a treat it is to see Michael Brecker, no matter what he is playing or with whom. I still regard his self titled solo album (with Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette, Kenny Kirkland) as one of the top ten albums I have ever listened to. And Eddie Gomez and Peter Erskine are just the perfect rhythm section.
0:00 Islands - Mike Mainieri. 7:12 Pools - Don Grolnick. 18:59 Skyward Bound - Mike Mainieri. 24:31 Northern Cross - Peter Erskine. 29:50 Loxodrome - Eddie Gomez 35:44 Sarah's Touch - Mike Mainieri. 46:48 Duo - Mike Mainieri. 48:30 Both Sides Of The Coin - Michael Brecker.
So I saw this on SABC in the early 80's and immediately grabbed the nearest vhs tape and recorded the rest of the program. To this day I still love this show. It gave me hope for REAL musiuc on REAL instruments in the 80s when everything was synthesizers and drum boxes. Thankyou so much Herkenes, I have missed this massive like, and now - the whole show!
Eliane Elias on piano. Second time watching this and just realizing… There is are no better musical discoveries than working your way backwards in time through it…I am convinced. Marvelous music. Peter Erskine too … mind blown 🤯
Thank you for uploading. This is a real treat to see such a great group with all of the members in the prime of life. Mike Mainieri is a personal favorite. He was all over albums in the late 70's (David Sanborn, Michael Franks, etc.) with that distinctive vibes sound. Check out his solo LP for Warner Bros. called Wanderlust. Released in 1980, it was the genesis of Steps Ahead and it includes the first version of Sara's Touch.
+sekander3 ..Hey ,, nice comment I have most of steps ahead albums and saw them once when all of them had swinging things between their legs... My best friend in high school played vibes and we jammed every weekend but even Mike forgets to let go of the sustain pedal a lot? lol
A gold mine! I've taught myself drums over the years, not being able to get into a music program where I grew up. This video has a wealth of valuable licks and lessons for how to play jazz and using the right technique. F* a music program at a college. This video is a 4 yr music degree!!! Thank you Erskine! I hope you will be at the drum fantasy camp in Cleveland this August!!!
If anyone needed any proof how seminal this band were it's here Brecker and Gomez. Manieri and wonderful flower yet to bloom Elias....just magnificent.....since 85 hooked and the tsunami of magnetic to come...... astonishing quality.... benchmark viewing
Every one plays so amazing throughout this. The early Steps Ahead had some nice samba grooves happening. I love the line-up with Eliane Elias, too bad she wasn't featured more. She's put out a ton of great albums over the years, well they all have.
I was so very fortunate to see this show at a small jazz club called Maynards in Charlotte, North Carolina in the eighties. These folks were so nice. After the show they were available for hand shakes and to talk to. One of the best shows i've ever seen. When i arrived and took a seat at a table, the band was at a table in the corner eating sandwiches. They were comfortable playing and really enjoyed what they played.
It's because it wasn't a public concert. It was set up by a Danish production company called Titania Television, and they rented the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek wintergarden for the occasion. I was invited to the two days sessions by Mike Mainieri, as one of two persons in the magnificent room not taking part in the production - a life changing experience for me as an aspiring vibes player.
I saw both these guys and the Guatemala Coconuts live in Athens. I believe the Coconuts played largely from their latest album, 'Botswana Bleeps'. Genius.
Innovative. Mainieri in particular doesn't get enough credit for being an innovator on the vibraphone as well as musically as a composer and arranger. His playing is incredibly solid despite his highly unusual grip. You have to love the Quaker Oats box where he temporarily places mallets when he switches from four mallets to two. (Players that choose to switch back and forth between four and two mallets should emulate what he has always done and use a holder on the side of the instrument, and not try to place the "out of play" mallets on or in the instrument itself.)
I saw this lineup in 1983 at the UNC Jazz Festival. My friends and I sat on stage next to Peter Erskine. Seeing and experiencing them up-close and personal like that was an concert I’ll never forget! In an incredibly funny moment, my friends and I noticed during the first tune that Becker’s fly was down. We told Erskine at the end of the song about it and he just laughed. He didn’t tell Becker until the end of the next song.
Ho iniziato a 15 anni a seguirli adesso ne ho 55 erano gli anni 80 con questo fantastico jazz e ho cominciato ad amare soprattutto la fusion che raggruppa tutti i "mostri sacri". Che tempi
Just an amazing video, thanks for the upload. I was lucky enough to see them in Toronto and had a chat with Peter Erskine during a sound check break. Wonderful drummer and band.
(Brasil)
Muito bom isso, thanks for sharing. Incredible sound quality, I'm amazed at the bass' tone/clarity and how perfectly balanced the whole timbres/instruments mix is.
Wonderful! One of my all-time favourites! as an aside, I like how they show the band members enjoying the artwork and doing an ocular inspection of the performance site.

Thanks to your uncle for believing that making these recordings was a worthwhile investment for Titania. It’s such a beautiful gift to all of us
Many thanks to your uncle R.I.P. ! This is one fantastic live recording and wonderful presentation of these brilliant players in this unique setting.
40 years later and still sounds as amazing as ever.
RIP Michael Brecker

There's a great Eddie Gomez reaction at one point once Mike takes it into orbit... "wow". That's my favorite Pools solo that I've heard Mike play.
"with such clarity and musicality!!!" #ytmostidioticcomments

The multi-camera shoot is smooth and flawless. Truly amazing.
I do think the piano is a bit too quiet though.

Right you are, this live recording sounds better than the album!
Peter Erskine is kicking some A##s. Love his playing. Especially on POOLS.
Eddie Gomez is also killing it throughout pools, and the rest of the show!!
His touch is fantastic.

Eddie Gomez is such a consummate musician. His creative bass sound is so captivating!
Can't agree more with you. What a phenomenal bassist. So precise, rhythmically challenging and with a tone that really sings.
Man, nobody plays like Brecker. Just phenominal.
Love how he is improvising over "Islands" near the end...
Bendyk comes VERY close esp. On the nyc album...

Agreed - Erskine also trumps his successors.

I'm a big fan of Michael Brecker but imho Mainieri deserves much more credit.
Sarah's touch, one of my favorite tunes ever. I am still asking myself how can a human being create such amount of beauty.
All great musicians! It's a pity that just few people know them! Lovely music! It's sad that Michael Brecker passed away too early... Eliane Elias is one of my favourite pianists and one of my favourite Brazilian musicians.
Agreed. When they played the samba tunes like Islands or Both Side of the Coin, she made them so much better.
This is absolutely the best incarnation of that band. Amazing!

My favorite band from that time! Everyone is so brilliant.
The golden age of modern jazz. Wonderful musicians. Top score.
Very nice performances on Pools. And then my favourite ballad: Skyward Bound.
This is such an excellent performance by true giants of jazz in the 80s.
Unbelievable what these musicians are doing here. They just create magic music.

The Eliane Elias version of Steps Ahead is my favorite. Thank you very much for sharing this!
The samba tunes come alive with her comping on piano! Islands, Both Sides of the Coin... fantastic. Love that self-titled album.
