Imagine being a twenty-something world-renowned virtuoso... young, talented, beautiful... constantly battling anxiety, and eventually having a serious bout of depression... having three kids... defeating cancer.. yet still continuing to do what you love at a virtuosic level nearly 60 years later. This woman is an absolute gift.

This statement. That's exactly how I feel about her, specifically with her Chopin scherzo performances. I've never seen someone lash out so gracefully. I am of the staunch belief that there isn't a pianist alive that plays Chopin's scherzos better. I love her in other Chopin works but there's something magical about her scherzo performances that I've never heard any other pianist come close to matching.

    • @NoferTrunions
      @NoferTrunions 4 года назад +3

@@mc3newsmcocconcierge504 Martha indeed plays them with reckless abandon, airily, delicately, lightly, perhaps as wood sprites would play them - hard to put into words... Whimsically is a good one. Like when you play Polichinelle, you try to be a mischievous as the clown himself.
But when I listen to a work of Chopin to see how people play it, Cortot is the one I always look for first. He is "rubato limit" so to speak - but it's more than that. I can't speak for all Martha's Chopin but I'll bet you are spot on with her Scherzo's.
I'd also like to hear Zlata Chohieva's Scherzo's but it appears there aren't any on youtube. Z's Rach Etudes-Tableau are stunning and magical.

Piano's weren't made as pianos are manufactured in the last 60 years or so today and what's more, writing in the freezing cold and damp weather conditions Give credit when do. Who in the hell knows how his music sounded 180 years ago. Every pianist has his/her own interpretation as closely as can be followed according to the music read.

I envy those who were/are able to hear this living legend play live. My wife and I have bought tickets to multiple concerts of hers, even traveled to Singapore on one occasion, only to have her cancel at the last minute.
I guess we'll have to settle for listening to her recordings.
What sets her apart from others is that no matter how many times I listen to her recording, it never fails to move me emotionally. Even though I know what's coming, I always hear a fresh hidden layer in her playing. I don't blame her for the frequent cancellations: she bares her soul every time she's on stage, so if she doesn't feel inspiration, she won't waste your time by giving a formulaic performance.

I vehemently disagree. Her fast tempo glosses over all the emotional content Chopin labored over. Rubenstein and Zimmerman both used a tempo which embodied the scherzo (though Rubenstein muddled the notes a bit) whereas Argerich flagrantly speeds over chords which require a pianist's full attention. You and others say that this performance reflects Argerich's personality which is a dreadful insult to Argerich considering the piece's quality. Ultimately this pieces appears to be some sort of contorted satire!

@@tteerabeats9116 I'd say most of the themes in this one aren't as playful as you'd expect but, to me, out of the four, this and no 4 do have the most playful themes. Likely because Chopin took the scherzos in a completely different direction compared to how they had been previously composed. No 1 is definitely the darkest but the purpose of all four is not the brightness and light-heartedness with which the scherzo form was previously associated (Beethoven had started to take the form in darker directions, but Chopin takes the playful scherzo and takes it in a radical new direction). These are large and powerful expressive works.

Argentina’s icons (Perón, Evita, Maradona and Messi) are wayyyyyy below this amazing pianist. She’s definitely the most notable classical musician of the 20th century and posible the 21st too. She battled cancer, depression , being a mom of three daughters and the pressure of touring and being on the spotlight,
She’s now 80 beautiful years old and performing like she’s a young person. This is a real Icon for any country….for the world itself !!!! but here in Argentina she’s rarely mentioned.

I personally loved this interpretation and have nothing to criticize about it but I disagree with you. I invite anyone who has observations to share them here, whether they can play it or not. If we followed you logic, there would be no movie critics giving negative reviews because they can't make movies themselves or food critics saying they don't like a certain plate at a restaurant because they can't cook it better themselves. Believe it or not, most people are not professional pianists reknown internationally and thus cannot perform such pieces but still are entitled to their opinions. Just because Martha or anyone else is a genius doesn't make them impervious to constructive criticizm.

"Her Chopin interpretation is bound to be influenced by the rhythms and sounds of her native Argentina, where those quick Tango twitches, turns, and tantrums surfaced in her playing" is repugnant. Ugh.

The best pianist alive (and perhaps ever) performing this. Martha was as good as legend say. Whether or not this is "the best" version is really another question but her technical interpretation is beyond reproach. Notes are crystal clear, tempo is perfect and she does not over peddle. Where I consider the most difficult parts of the piece 4:40 and 6:20 stretch (most mortals slow down) where she maintains her tempo. Bravo.

@renovar Wwis when she goes she goes! Those leggiero passages are outstanding and that speed, with such accuracy and melodoldy in the left hand. The sempre con fuoco is played with such fire 🔥 plus there's chords unspread of 9ths in the left hand (4th line onwards) at that pace is masterful. My favorite is the last 58 bars how she comes down to a pianisamo for the arpeggiated Fmaj7 to Aflat major. Lush!

I found some versions to be too masculine and heavy-handed, whereas others were lacking in the same area, but argerich flows so effortlessly between the fortes and pianos, between staccatos and legatos. She covers all bases, putting the entirety of her being into the music and controlling it extremely well. You can hear each note like pins dropping, but nowhere do her fingers stutter, not once. A stupendous flurry of (very long!) fingers, it is not only entertaining to listen to, but to watch.

Define too masculine? What has gender got to do with piano playing? Do you expect women to play a certain way and men to play a different way? Why? I'm a female pianist and have a lot of strength and power but I do not consider that I play like a man because in the end what does a man play like? They all play so differently. So can we just leave gender out of it please.
