This is a timeless classic of John Wayne’s and a favorite of mine. He’s so good at not only teaching those boys to be cowboys but also takes on a father image to them. He even called them his children. His relationship with his wife is awesome. The cook was also a very interesting character. And then there’s the rustler played by Bruce Dern. He almost always has a bad guy role but he’s so good at it!!!!
Well, Amaryllis Brooke, I figure you'd be 19 by now. I hope you haven't wasted these last five years. In the same time I've gone from 68 to 73, time is starting to run out for some. Make the most of yours.
Imagine being a movie exec back in the early '70s and a writer walks in... Writer: "I have a screenplay, an old herder is short of men and hires boys and turns them into men on the trail." Exec: "I like it, anyone in mind for the lead?" Writer: "Yes sir, none other than The Duke." Exec: "Oooh, I like it. Got a villain in mind?" Writer: "Yes sir, an up and coming young actor named Bruce Dern." Exec: "Oooh. I like him. Not much work, but he's been a good villain in Hang 'em High and Gunsmoke. This is awesome, can we start shooting soon?" Writer: "Yes sir, as soon as I get an okay from anyone to finance the movie. Each investor I've shown the script to in the past had a change of heart when I tell them The Duke is killed in this movie." Exec: ".......(Blank stare)...." Writer: "Sir?" Exec: "Get the hell out my office!!"
The first time I saw this on TV in the seventies, I was in shock, John Wayne, shot dead, what!?!! Such a great film and the first time I'd seen Bruce Dern, he was never better...and Roscoe Lee Brown, "forgive me for the men I've killed...and am about to..."
What a great movie this was. I was so excited after watching it on its first run at the theater when I was a tween. Bruce Dern is such a good heel. And the rest of the cast was great. I gotta watch it again now.
I never saw this movie before, but I can tell you it is one of the best movies of all time. Not only the presence of THE DUKE, but also how he trained those young boys to be tough ranchers. Oh my God, the boys back then ( I mean the 70s) were more polite than these days, and they're ready to fight for what they were trained for. KUDOS for THE DUKE and the pretty brave boys.
Absolutely one of the top seven movies ever. I heard when they were getting rid of shoot it John Wayne said to Bruce dern, they are going to hate your guts
From what I heard he said “America will hate you for killing John Wayne.” Dern said “Yeah, but they’ll love me at Berkeley.” Look what a cesspool that entire area has become from such anti-American sentiments. Arguably 90% of the state.
I had the opportunity to work with Sean Michael Kelly on a stage play at the Hollywood Actors Theatre in the summer of 1979....fine actor then...I hope he is well today...
This is Lori Bach. This movie is a classic and demonstrates that young children "back in the day" were not given toys to entertain themselves. They were taught life skills early on and weren't treated like children, they way we do today. Look at what our collegiate educational system has produced as of late - DIAPER PINS & SAFE PLACES.
I grew up in 70’s… my dads idea of a little light work for me after school was getting a dump truck to drop a load of gravel in the driveway and tell me it needed to be moved so he could pull his car in after work. 10 yards in 3 hours 😂
Does anyone remember seeing this movie on the theater along with a live action stage show put on by stunt men with blank pistols? Its was a pretty cool at 11yrs old.
The Cowboys is a great picture, with one of Wayne's most powerful performances, but it tanked at the box office. Time had passed the big cowboy by. "Controversial"? That's news to me.
Saw an interview with Dern about this... he stated that he is quite liberal and John Wayne warned him that a lot of people were going to dislike him for shooting The Duke... Dern replied, "But a lot of people at Berkeley are going to like me". Pretty much sums up Berkeley for me. Dern certainly could play the penultimate bad guy... excellent actor.
If there was anything controversial, it may have pertained to Roscoe Lee Browne as the black cook and the use of the "N" word. The treatment of one of the boys by Bruce Dern was also jarring, though necessary to bring the viewer along and central to the plot. It also justified their vengeance, including their emotional detachment when Dern meets his end. The essence of the movie was boys growing to men and a fatherless man (Wayne) treating them (and teaching them) like sons. The only spot in the film that rang false for me was the means Wayne used for curing the boy who stuttered. The fact that the scene would be viewed as politically incorrect is not what bothers me, but more that it was rather hokey and cliched. One of my all-time favorite movies...
@driver3464 "I've seen this movie and I don't see why it is controversial" It's not controversial, and it wasn't a box-office hit. That's just the poster blowing smoke.

Great movie, but to this day I still can't stand Bruce Dern because of this movie. I heard that in one of the scenes John Wayne whispered in Dern's ears that many fans would hate him for shooting his killing his character the way he did. Dern thought it was funny, John was sure right. I have never watched anything Dern was in that I could stand him in

All time favorite movie John Wayne!😊
Yep, one of my all time favorite movies. Have seen it more times than I can remember.....
One of John Wayne's many great movies ❤️
What a great movie. Wayne should have had an Oscar nomination for his role.
Bruce Dern as well...
Great movie! Thanks Duke and thanks to all people that made this movie!
My 14 year old cousin somehow found this on streaming and loves it. He made me watch and it was really good.
Duke should have won a Oscar.......
My favourite John Wayne film by far. Great western, 10 out of 10.
Roscoe Lee Brown, young kids earning respect...this movie in it's own way was way ahead of its time.
I used to watch these movies when I was 9 with my grandparents .. 5 years ago

The story goes, half the boys were training as actors and half were kids working the rodeos, taught each other their crafts.

And what, five years before _Star Wars_ five years after _The Reivers_ ?
And don't forget the VIE-VALdy guitar solo.
I still have not forgiven Bruce Dern for shooting John Wayne in the back.
It was just a movie. I really liked _Silent Running._ Score by the late Peter Schickele.
