Building and Installing an Auxiliary Fuel Tank - Fabrication Tips | Stout Vlog 039

- I built this fuel tank a few years back and just recently decided to finish and install it in my truck. Im using a gravity fed system with an electric solenoid to control the flow of fuel from my auxiliary tank to the stock tank on my truck. Makes it pretty nice for those extended trips when you don't want to stop or fuel is pricey in a certain area.
If you are interested in doing something similar on your truck, here are a couple of the parts I used in my build that would work on most other tanks.
Electric solenoid: amzn.to/3DilVL3
Push button switch: amzn.to/3iFfcBl
1/4" Weld in bungs (aluminum): amzn.to/3iYacrX
1/4" Weld in bungs (steel): amzn.to/3DfhCjH
Filler Cap and neck (aluminum, the one used in this video): amzn.to/3IDSyUE
Locking & Vented Filler Cap (Ive used this on other builds. Use with a 2" weld in pipe flange) amzn.to/3ILWWB5
Weld in fittings for Filler Cap listed above --
Aluminum: amzn.to/3Dvdcpb
Steel (cut one end of and weld on): amzn.to/36zrA3w
Roll over vent valve: amzn.to/3qFB6cj
The fabrication and building videos are my cup of tea. I wish you were a bit closer, I'd have some projects for you.
This ones for you then! I really do enjoy making these fabrication videos! I haven't had many cool projects going on lately so I was stoked for this little build. It would be pretty rad to do some subscriber projects though!
Thank you man, i like smart builds like this
Glad you enjoyed it! 🤙🏼
So stoked for this video, awesome to see you back to fabrication! Great job.
Yeah been a while huh! Thanks!
Nice work man
Hey thank you! 👊🏻🤘🏼
Beautiful welds.
Thanks brotha!
Very nice welds 👍
Thank you! 🤙🏼
Man I wish I had the skill set to do a custom tank for my truck. Been wanting to do an lshape tank but it be in the bed essentially backwards because I have a tonneau that goes from toolbox back so I can’t put the store bought ones in without having to remove the tonneau
If you can weld I’m sure there is a local shop somewhere near you that could cut and bend the parts for ya!
Forgot the manual shut off valve. If you need dot inspections, they could get you on that. Fmcsa states auxiliary tanks need to have a manual shut off valve. How will you shut the fuel off of the 12v solenoid fails…..
How much to build me on for my Chevy with a pacesetter roll up tonneau cover?
Do you need to use rubber mats and springs in your bolts to give it some rub room ?
Probably not a bad idea to have a little insulator in there 🤔 You’re talking between the bed and the tank right? I’ve been down some pretty wash boardy roads since the install and havnt noticed any rattling but it might be a good idea to add some
@@AustinStout I was thinking of a stall mat or old mudflats. Under the tank
How did the magnet work on aluminum when you retrieved the disc from the hole saw?
Oh I just used an aluminum magnet ;) Jk it’s a little claw pickup tool
@@AustinStout oh I thought it was a magnet. How long does it take to fill? And how many gallons did that end up holding ? Have you had any problems filling through the vent tube?
He kinda looks like demolition ranch
How much would you charge me for something like this? I have a tank but it doesn’t have the hole at the bottom for the gas to be released l. It’s just a tank
What happens if the valve gets stuck in the open position while coming out of the bottom of a auxiliary tank?? I want to build this but im scared of mechanical failure and then over flow
Actually had that happen on mine. Came out and it was dripping off the top of the stock tank from one of the little vent tubes. Since then I’ve only turned it on when my stock tank has been empty. I might go back to a manual valve or try a more reputable brand. The valve I put on my dads truck has been solid though
This is why dot requires a manual shutoff valve located on the ranks outlet bung.
I would like to have a 100 gallon for my f150
Could you share tank cut out? I want to build one just curious of raw cost of material
Normally I’d say yes but I designed and cut this one out years ago and don’t have the file anymore.. but I did get all of that out of a 4x8 sheet of aluminum. Just had to get creative. A sheet will run ya somewhere between 350-400 now 😅😅
@@AustinStout thank you. I thought of building vs buying.
@@scubieman that’s usually my choice as well! Plus it’s fun. Oh now that I think of it that price would be accurate for a 5x10 not a 4x8. If you decide to look more into it go to a big metal supplier for a better price. Some of the shops around me charge a big markup
Just wondering, if you forget to switch off the valve, is there some mechanism to prevent the factory tank from overflowing?
Unfortunately no. In the past it has never seemed to be an issue but that happened on this one last summer. It filled the factory tank and some 😂 Came out and it was some dripping fuel..
Where’d you put switch for the solenoid
In left side of the little panel under my steering column! I use a flush mount push button switch so it looks clean
@@AustinStout video please
Not sure where your out of im in Kansas wanting a custom Auxiliary tank that can go around my stacks would you be interested in helping?
I’m in utah so there would be a shipping cost. But if you would like to send some detailed drawings with measurements of what you are looking for I could get ya a quote on the project!
@@AustinStout sweet i will do tht
Nut zeros don't really work good on sheet metal
Been holding solid for over 2 years now!
Are you still building tanks
No, unfortunately I’m not really set up to do them right now
Is there a way to add an electric pump
All you would have to do is add different fittings on top and it could have a pump. So yeah pretty easily. I have a tonneau cover and also didn't have anything else to fill up so I didn't add one
Nice man but what kind of fitting and how will it close man
well if I added a pump I wouldn't be able to use the tonneau cover. if thats what you mean? But most of the pumps just screw into a female 1" npt fitting. so it would be the same thing as the one I have for the vent but bigger
Ah okay nice man thanks
no problem!
