The Tubes were my passed Fathers favorite band. He was at one of their concerts in Royal Oak and was behind the venue. He ran into Vince and ended up smoking pot with Fee and Vince before a show! Great stories, also a show I and my Dad and Mom were at Fee kicked a can of beer onto my mom while wearing the 7 inch heels. The concert ended I had my back to the stage talking to my mother and next thing I know I had to huge hands on my shoulders it was Fee using me as a leaning post to talk to my mom and apologize and give her his Tubes world tour shirt off his back. Best music moment I had.

The Tubes have been my favorite band for years but sadly only recently got to see them at Chene Park in Detroit in 2019. I say sadly because it was a festival-type show where they were only able to play two songs, Talk to Ya Later and She's a Beauty. I got to meet the whole band and have them sign a cd and take pictures with them all but sadly the pics got deleted. I feel like you are probably are about my age, early 30s or late 20s, so I'm glad you got to see them with your dad. My dad has said for years he wants to see them with me but it has not happened yet. Royal Oak would have been a much better venue for the Tubes than Chene park, no question.

My dad actually went to see “The Tubes” for the first time in 199-something which turned out to be just Roger Steen who played the entirety of the B side of Love Bomb, by himself with no band. My dad will always tell the story when we pass the place the concert was held (it’s now abandoned and defunct). Apparently something really funny happened too, it was like late January early February in New England (Constant snow and ice) so Roger was on stage all bundled up and when he went to hit one of the pedals and the set list got stuck to his boot and he sat there for a full 10 minutes trying to get it off.

I won tickets from WBCN radio in Boston on Charles Laquideria's program called Mishegas(sp?) The only radio station in New England probably playing the Tubes. It was a dream come true. I had ALL their albums. One of the best stage shows ever! The theatrics and musicianship, off the charts. This video brought it all back! Great upload.

I know these songs inside out, this is like the holy grail. Way before RUclips and the internet there I was as a young teen smoking pot and listening to these brilliant albums ... every song a different genre and musicianship off the scale. My ears loved every sound. So many memorable tunes. Great lyrics, brilliant vocals/harmonies, excellent arrangements and I marveled at how so many musos could create such a rich tapestry without stepping on each others toes. I would sing all the songs in my head during the day at work then sit between the speakers and play my Tubes albums over and over. In the beginning I was confused as to whether Quay Lewd was a separate singer and also the song I was a Punk Before You Were A Punk had me thinking another band was on stage ... I converted one of my friends into a major fan and my brothers got off on Remote Control. TCBP was the last album I bought as I sensed a change was in the wind. It wasn't until I was in my 40's that I started accepting their more commercial LPs ... retrospectively I enjoyed all the songs I'd missed out on and some are gems. Vale Vince Welnick. Thanks Jeff for this classic lineup buzz ... I would have loved to have been able to see this band in their heyday.

I remember around '81, one of my uncles had a few (maybe even all) of their albums and him telling me how great The Tubes were, and playing The Completion Backward Principle for me. I remember thinking, even as a kid, "What an odd band name and album cover but it sounds great". Holy mother this show is fantastic. I saw them on this tour - Love Bomb tour, at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ, but they did not play the deep cuts they're playing here, it was pretty Outside Looking Inside, Completion Backward, Remote Control & Love Bomb oriented, with the usual standards from the 1st album, and it was a great show, but man, I would've loved to hear some of these tunes - God Bird Change, Proud to Be American, Up From the Deep, Young and Rich, so many great tunes, & they are just KILLING.
They were also falling apart at the time, Love Bomb was a very contentious album within the band, Fee hated it - they made a few slick radio friendly albums, and next thing they did was record the very out-there Love Bomb, they got dropped by their label, I believe, mid tour, & then Fee left - this all happened right around the time of this concert.
They did regroup numerous times with different personnel, but eventually Cotton left & Vince went on to join The Grateful Dead, & they're still active & touring, with the core of Fee, Rodger, Prarie & Rick. Thanks to whoever posted this, I can't stop watching it

It's now easier to see why the Love Bomb tour was a bust for the Tubes in '85. No doubt this was a full setlist showcase and would have been abbreviated for their road show. Just the same the setlist and production seriously lacks the 'big hits' punch which CBP and Outside-Inside definitely had. Although they do come alive by the time they get to 'Piece by Piece'. It was this original version of The Tubes which made them 'huge' in the early 80s. I'm still looking for a pro-shot of the Love Bomb show once they got on-tour. Two seriously M.I.A. songs from the Love Bomb tour, 'Stella' and 'One Good Reason'.

Bill is a friend of mine. In fact, I just talked to him yesterday.. He still plays to this day, so I don't imagine he had any arthritis problems.

great show anybody know the backstory to this? No concert at the village on set list in 1985 guessing before love bomb tour with rungren. piece by piece lyrics off. before or after being dropped by capital? how was the band getting along during this. why no recorded encores. any other new vids to post? thanks

My understanding is that they did a few of these local career retrospective shows after the Love Bomb tour with Utopia completed. I found reference to one in southern CA on the web. These are said to be the final regular touring shows with Spooner before he split the band.

Jeff Dorman thanks set list has a similar song rotation at wolgangs in September 85 and then shows at the palace theater in la and Santa Cruz in November 85 must have been in there. in interviews fee says he wanted song writing to
1 side of love bomb so they could be as successful as reo speedwagon bill and Roger told me at a club tour in 1987 that in this case love bomb would have been read my lips. I am guessing it was known fee was leaving when this was recorded such a shame tremendous talent in its prime. Thanks again

I'm just guessing here, but I think Fee admired Todd's ability to write 'hits' in the 70's. And I think he wanted to go down that path with Foster and Lukather, helping him hone his skills. In retrospect, they were many other less-mainstream influences that could have helped him carve out a more individualistic solo career but he chose the SoCa/LA industry types. Read My Lips has a very average stuck in the 80's sound. The stuff from the fist side of Love Bomb blows it away.

Band was in debt ($1/2 mil) from self financing great Love Bomb your with multiple cancellations.I saw them during this period prairie not there (scheduled session work), mingo filled in on drums.I believe Fee and Mike Cotten were ready to leave but stayed to tour and eliminate debt.Strange part of snow was David Killingsworth would pop up occasionally during show dancing on top of PA with unplugged playing air guitar.Like this ,show was a retrospective and great,Spooner had to work with mingo a couple of times between songs (might have forgotten drum pattern)

Weird question maybe, because I LOVE the A&M years and this show is chock full.. but why decidedly no 'crowd pleasing' hits from the Capitol/Foster era (TTYL, Beauty, Dont Wanna Wait, Out of the business).. was this the tour they got fucked on, or the one they did to pay back all the money they may have owed to Capital etc.

This was the era of the band’s breakup, Fee was being a total baby about the bands creative direction and left because they didn’t hire the producer he wanted, so he was checked out (obviously no costumes and leaving stage constantly)

I heard Fee in an interview around 2007 . He said he hated the album Todd Rundgren produced for them , lol . Song Television isn't bad though around 1:08:19 from same album (?)

I think the Todd produced album Fee Waybill didn't like was Love Bomb which was this tour. Fee wanted David Foster to do the third Capitol Album but the rest of the band couldn't stand David Foster. Particularly Bill Spooner. Fee thought a third album with Foster would have more hit records and put the Tubes over the top so to speak. Alas, Love Bomb had Piece By Piece as the only song that made a whimper on the charts, Capitol didn't support the tour, the band fell apart.

    • @brianmccain6302
      @brianmccain6302 3 года назад

Fee wanted David Foster to produce their next album with limited input from band except for Fee with session players similar to many songs on Outside Inside.Band (except Fee )refused and hired Rundgren to do Love Bomb after Fee recorded and put out ReadMy Lips with Foster Lukather and session players which was terrible.

Todd produced Remote Control first...before Love Bomb. Both albums were witty and explosive! WAAAAYYY ahead of their time. By the mid-eighties, kids were seeking MC Hammer/Baby's Got Back and soon hip-hop. TRAGIC!
