Great job ji. Such an in-depth analysis. We have learned so much from your podcasts. Fundamental issue seems to be the inheritance of a nation based on two nation theory, that is just by following the faith one is qualified enough as a bonafide citizen. Thank you for the summary Shahzad although I’m surprised nothing was said about the role of the MQM in all this. As a tween/teen during the 90s I was your usual army worshiping, Pak Studies/PTV blinded youthia of the day. It was only after reading ‘seditious’ books and being tutored by legends like Dr Mehdi Hassan that the false equivalences I had built in my head began to give way to the facts and then it wasn’t too hard to put together the pieces of the puzzle. I am pretty confident in retrospect many youthias will realise the folly of their ways. Till then we must unfortunately put up with their noise
I was 13 years old when I read the novel "1984". The novel is about a dystopian world, where a single government called "THE PARTY" rules the mases according to their own will. But their "WILL" is always hidden and presented to the mases as a form Nationalistic Construct which is to be followed till death. At that time my 13 year old mind could not understand how was this possible ? Even though the book clearly gave the methods through which THE PARTY (the 1%) influenced the masses. Now I finally Understand the manifesto of THE PARTY: 1. ""FREEDOME IS SLAVERY": "Pakistan does not deserve democracy". (GEN AYUB) The politicians are all bastards. YOUR (the irony) vote has led to the current state of Pakistan. "East Pakistan was a political catastrophe" (GEN BAJWA) "The Golden Era was the dictator Trio" (my father) 2. "WAR IS PEACE" Make a formidable enemy ( India ). Direct all hate towards it. Establish an always present (imaginary) threat. So, that allocating a huge chunk of Annual budget is always seen as NECESSARY and PATRIOTIC. This directs the flow of wealth to the establishment and anyone who opposes is Stampeded by The MASES themselves. The PEACE in this sense, is the assurity that the masses will never rebel. As financial restraints will keep them handicapped and soon all revolutionary or lliberal ideas will be considered counter productive ( Even Traitorous ). 3. "IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH" Completely grab the intellect of the masses. Make them realize that they are helpless and unable to survive without the presence of their benevolent MASTERS. "Marta is liye hai kunke Pyar karta hai" And if some strength or aptitude is left in the masses after all this....Direct it towards the Politically Manufactured ( so called Democratic ) Parties. And Ladies and Gentlemen, This is the ISLAMIC............REPUBLIC..............of PAKISTAN.
I don't blame common Pakistanis but as an Indian, after going through Pakistan's history I realize the Pakistani establishment is one of the reasons for poverty in both Pakistan and India. Wars are very expensive and it takes years from recovering from a single war and poor countries like ours fought 4 wars so anyone can imagine the magnitude of damage it caused to the economy. India was never hostile towards Pakistan except for recent years and the Pakistani establishment rejected every effort for peace that it completely changed the outlook of common Indians toward Pakistan. Now a common Indian prefers no relations with Pak and thinks we should part ways for good.
Great work! These are the right bits of history that masses need to know about! Once you are done covering all chapters of post-partition history (I do suggest making an in-depth recap of facts like these for 2008-Present to conclude the perspective and historical timeline), Please make a series on pre-partition political picture as well. I'm deeply interested in understanding the real Pakistan envisioned by Jinnah and his pals (BBC-Urdu has a great audio-documentary on last days of Jinnah and Dr. Taimoor has done great work in his videos but those are too lengthy to watch for the masses). I believe that now, more than ever, Gen-Z and whatever left of the sane-millennials need to question whatever BS they have been told and taught their entire lives!
The 1990's were unstable in India as well, there were 8 Prime Ministers in a span of 10 years, India was bailed out by IMF, Sold Gold reserves to survive and India's saviour USSR had collapsed. How Indian rulers reacted and make amends towards development is the seed, that bears fruits now, 20 years later. It's ONLY in Pakistan, you see collapse, get money from loaners or by aid, spend it and again another collapse, get money from loaners or by aid, spend it, and the cycle repeats. All Pakistan needs is a good visionary leader, and half-a-generation of patience from people, because Honest Development takes a good amount of time.
