Ottoman empire was split and various countries were formed based on identities of 'nationhood', religion, language or culture. It's funny that I am saying it like this but when you compare the otherization of minorities by majority, you seem to forget that the majority in India are entirely different from the majority in Pakistan in societal values. We are continuously fighting our battles for equality within our communities and for other communities that are oppressed within themselves and we as a citizen of a democratic nation are encouraged to do so. From where I am looking at things I guess some religious communities are just built differently. The majority community in India is indeed. We have had a long battle of rectifying ourselves of our sins, we continue to do so each day simultaneously coexisting with 40 crore other communities that we know as our minorities and only a handful seem to have a problem in doing the same. There is this inherent exclusive mindset in some communities that makes it hard for them to coexist peacefully. In this case the otherization was done long-long back and it can't be undone now. As far as India is concerned, you'll need to read more than Romilla Thapar and NYTimes

The thing that is missing from narrative about what the Indian PM said is that he was quoting Dr Singh and linking it to what Mr R Gandhi has been saying and hidden within its manifesto. Congress gifted away acres of prime land in Delhi to Wakf board right before 2014 elections to get those minority votes. They also brought in a law that would prescute majority irrespective of perpetuators in case of riots. We also have draconian laws in Wakf which allow the minority to stake claims to any land they want and that decision can’t be challenged in courts! They recently claimed to a 1000 year old temple as Wakf owned property. They have at it now in Karnataka and Telangana where they have government. Indias problem were never the Muslims. It was the illegitimate children of British in Congress who always divided Indians.

Are Pakistani school kids taught that India & Pakistan got independence from British rule on account of the Congress, Subhash Chandra Bose's INA and the many other revolutionaries who fought the British Raj in any way they could? Congress leaders drove the mass nonviolent movements, INA tried with full scale army and revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh, Azad etc used guerilla warfare. And they paid a heavy price - Congress leaders spent decades in jail, INA was defeated and revolutionaries were tortured and then killed. However the Muslim League, under Jinnah's leadership, never fought for independence, nor did any ML leader spend any significant time in jail. All they did was demand outsize political power in undivided India, and barring that, a separate homeland for Muslims (when the British were ready to Ieave) Is "how Pakistan achieved independence from Britain" taught in schools?

The state should not be based on religion. It's not only bad for the state it's bad for religion too because then the state gets to define what would be religious and what will be not. Hindi was made as a new language by the missionaries in the oriental college of Calcutta by combining various northern dilects and heavy infusion of Sanskrit. 2. Hinduism was made up around 1812 as a 'religion'. The followers were a minority until the 1871 census and after that casteless, AthiShudras, Chandalas etc were declared overnight as Hindus without the converts themselves knowing that they were Hindus by then. Thus Hindus becomes majority. 3. Santhana Dharma was cooked up in the early 1900s by the foreigner Annie Besant by copying the word from the Budhist scripture 'Dhammapada'. 4. New country called 'Bharat' is invented for the newly evolving British empire of the Indies or the Indian region.

Taking collective responsibility, the sub-continent was already a wilted tree with hardly any innovation and adoption of the new methods (at least since 900 ad). We were only fighting each other and even printing press was missing here while Briton saw increasing progress in automation and technology in the same time. No one in Karachi blames Pubjabi, Sindhi, Saraiki, or Pushtoons to deprive them from Economics resources. They have problems when they come and disturb the social fabric of Karachi. Punjabis and Pashtoons have been living in Karachi since 1947 or even before. They were never involved in snatching, dacoities, land grabbing, drugs, etc. Karachi was a difference city in late 70s, probably you were not even born. Yes, it becomes a hate point in common masses when they go to Sindh Secretaries Karachi or Shahbaz Building in Hyderabad, and find that 95% of employees there belong to one community (Sindhi). This was the same issue in East Pakistan when they saw that all civil servants come West Pakistan. When you blame Karachiates to bifurcate Sindh as Urban or Rural, you forgot that this was done by Sandhis in collaboration with majority Punjabis. You example for New York is not relevant or Islamophobia in Canada are not relevant too, because there is no discriminations or at least neither I experienced or observed here in Canada. I did experience not discriminations but hate in Pakistan than in North America. Economic resources in North America are not allocated based on the ethnic diversity in the city unlike Pakistan and India. The creation of Pakistan was due to the fear of the elite class of Pakistan that they may be deprived of the economics resource they were enjoying since the British rule. Congress under Nehru has already presented an Economics Reform Agenda, whereas Muslim League had no such document. So they used religion as a political tool for their own benefit. They preached two nation theory and when Pakistan was created Jinnah refused to take more migrants from India in 1948 which seems to be ridiculous act. Bro, I can speak whole day on these Socio-Economic issue in Pakistan, as I am a student of Economics, and Finance for last 37 years. You forgot the naked fact that Turkey and Palestine were created more or less by partition based on religion. Ottoman empire was split and various countries were formed based on identities of 'nationhood', religion, language or culture. India was a mini empire or a dominion created as part of the British empire. Pakistan's case is unique in the fact that they abandoned their claim to being actual Indians ( Indus river based) for a country based on a brand-new name.

It's funny that I am saying it like this but when you compare the otherization of minorities by majority, you seem to forget that the majority in India are entirely different from the majority in Pakistan in societal values. We are continuously fighting our battles for equality within our communities and for other communities that are oppressed within themselves and we as a citizen of a democratic nation are encouraged to do so. From where I am looking at things I guess some religious communities are just built differently. The majority community in India is indeed. We have had a long battle of rectifying ourselves of our sins, we continue to do so each day simultaneously coexisting with 40 crore other communities that we know as our minorities and only a handful seem to have a problem in doing the same. There is this inherent exclusive mindset in some communities that makes it hard for them to coexist peacefully. In this case the otherization was done long-long back and it can't be undone now. As far as India is concerned, you'll need to read more than Romilla Thapar and NYTimes

You can't call genocide by technical definition in Palestine because even 1971 Bangladesh casualties were not called genocide. For genocide by definition, you need to have a certain percentage of the population. I think Shehzad, you cannot say that there is discrimination of Muslims and cannot equate India with the experience of Pakistan or Israel . In India it is a backlash of the majority in view of perceived ( whether real or imagined) appeasement of minorities. You have Wakf that is independent, haj subsidies , civil law and special status to Muslims that that has given that backlash whereas the Hindu places of worship act places the Temples under state control etc. lease do some in depth research away from Islamic lens and learn why BJP that had 2 seats in the past came in power so fast. It is because of the errors of judgement in the Congress party that lead to rise of the Hindu right . Shah Bano case and the opening of ram mandir was the fault of the congress . How political parties exploited the tendency of Muslims to vote en block lead to appeasement. When this continued for 75 years then it lead to backlash by the majority community….it is a lazy analysis by western scholars and the left scholars.
When India was mostly hindu , we had an exceptional tolerance . Parsis, Muslims and Jews and others were assimilated but not converted. They thrived for centuries before the British or even Mughals came . And just showing Modi’s speech without context is just as bad. This speech was in the context in reply to Manmohan Singh speech said explicitly said that Muslims had 1st dip on resources and this was said in an election cycle.
I think it is duplicitous on the part of Muslim communities outside India when they demand liberal values when in minority like India , USA , etc. but when when in majority like Malaysia , Indonesia , Pakistan , Bangladesh , Turkey , middle east they demand that other communities follow Islamic values ( not necessarily sharia but values ) So it is Ok that Erdogan can convert a secular structure which was historically a church to a mosque but when Hindus demand that they be given what is rightfully their destroyed properties by Islamic invaders then they are communal and fascists . You seem to have a lot of sympathies for people in Palestine but I don't see protests for people killed in Yemen by the Saudis . I did not see mass protests by Muslims standing in protests for terror attacks,. No wonder the western world sympathies only run in left leaning educational institutions but no where else.

We also have draconian laws in Wakf which allow the minority to stake claims to any land they want and that decision can’t be challenged in courts! They recently claimed to a 1000 year old temple as Wakf owned property.
They have at it now in Karnataka and Telangana where they have government.

I am not aware of a such a case. 1000 year old temples are under central administration via archaeological survey of India. Fake victimhood propaganda of Hindus turned out to be lies anyway. Hindus are furious that Muslim Waqaf land is huge and they can't steal it by force. They are also angry about Christian lands in high price downtown areas in all the major cities. I have a query about the history being taught in schools in Pakistan. Are Pakistani school kids taught that India & Pakistan got independence from British rule on account of the Congress, Subhash Chandra Bose's INA and the many other revolutionaries who fought the British Raj in any way they could? Congress leaders drove the mass nonviolent movements, INA tried with full scale army and revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh, Azad etc used guerilla warfare. And they paid a heavy price - Congress leaders spent decades in jail, INA was defeated and revolutionaries were tortured and then killed.
However the Muslim League, under Jinnah's leadership, never fought for independence, nor did any ML leader spend any significant time in jail. All they did was demand outsize political power in undivided India, and barring that, a separate homeland for Muslims (when the British were ready to Ieave)

The state should not be based on religion. It's not only bad for the state it's bad for religion too because then the state gets to define what would be religious and what will be not. And then it takes the path of majoritarianism. We should not forget one thing we all are a minority in some sense. Maybe linguistic, regionalistic or gender wise.

What do you think about the concept of "Kafir" in Islam, in the context of the concept of "otherization" that you spoke about?
Islam promotes supremacy of its beliefs and its believers over other beliefs and non-believers and de-humanization of "others" through concepts like "jizya" and "dhimma" being "wajib-ul-qatl" and concept of sex-slaves "aymanukum" etc... it promotes sense of self-supremacy in believers by obligating them to carry out "tabligh" and "dawat" in order to make the world "dar-ul-islam" and forcing believers to proclaim loudly 5 times a day that there is no other God but theirs...a person following all these teachings will invariably be hateful towards what he is told are "others".

1. Hindi was made as a new language by the missionaries in the oriental college of Calcutta by combining various northern dilects and heavy infusion of Sanskrit.
2. Hinduism was made up around 1812 as a 'religion'. The followers were a minority until the 1871 census and after that casteless, AthiShudras, Chandalas etc were declared overnight as Hindus without the converts themselves knowing that they were Hindus by then. Thus Hindus becomes majority.
3. Santhana Dharma was cooked up in the early 1900s by the foreigner Annie Besant by copying the word from the Budhist scripture 'Dhammapada'.
4. New country called 'Bharat' is invented for the newly evolving British empire of the Indies or the Indian region.

Shehzad , yes you are right in that British took away the SOUL of our civilization. Taking collective responsibility, the sub-continent was already a wilted tree with hardly any innovation and adoption of the new methods (at least since 900 ad). We were only fighting each other and even printing press was missing here while Briton saw increasing progress in automation and technology in the same time.
I feel the British alone are not to be blamed for what is todays Pakistan. 1)From the onset (1947 and even before that), there should have been a consensus that the new land would belong to all (a bit of socialism) . I get the feeling this feeling was might have prevailed among some but they were disconnected from the large population. 2) There is a lot of talk that Pakistan got 2/3 of army. What stopped the govt post partition to CUT that to size. If they were to become businessmen today, they could have done that then too. 3)Analysts talk of trade with India, exports etc. I find it very silly and stupid (both may sound the same) that a country cannot even make its own roads and needs outside companies to do it. India had very very poor roads (even now state roads are that) but INDIANS build it. You guys are missing on the sense of pride and ownership! India has more - Hindustan Ambassador ,Amul, TATA, Mahidra truck to name a few.

A thought process behind creating a separate state for Muslims was reason enough to axe state and provide them with exclusive opportunities to grow, or how they put it that time that Muslims cannot stay with Hindus (or under them) and won on that concept.
Actually what educated elite of UP and CP wanted to state was Muslims cannot live beside any other community.
That always kept me guessing as to how are Muslims of Pakistan (seekers of a separate state) are able to live in the west. Apologies if I sound condescending but that’s what Pakistanis give reasons for partition to everyone in North America or Europe. And some (westerners) question as to why then they are living and working besides non Pakistani and in a foreign land; there comes that awkward smile.
But thanks for thinking and explaining. I hope sanity prevails in India as well given the political crisis going on

Your summary is amazing, very comprehensive, conclusive, and well narrated. I agree with your view 90% but in some instances your view point is different than the reality. No one in Karachi blames Pubjabi, Sindhi, Saraiki, or Pushtoons to deprive them from Economics resources. They have problems when they come and disturb the social fabric of Karachi. Punjabis and Pashtoons have been living in Karachi since 1947 or even before. They were never involved in snatching, dacoities, land grabbing, drugs, etc. Karachi was a difference city in late 70s, probably you were not even born. Yes, it becomes a hate point in common masses when they go to Sindh Secretaries Karachi or Shahbaz Building in Hyderabad, and find that 95% of employees there belong to one community (Sindhi). This was the same issue in East Pakistan when they saw that all civil servants come West Pakistan. When you blame Karachiates to bifurcate Sindh as Urban or Rural, you forgot that this was done by Sandhis in collaboration with majority Punjabis. You example for New York is not relevant or Islamophobia in Canada are not relevant too, because there is no discriminations or at least neither I experienced or observed here in Canada. I did experience not discriminations but hate in Pakistan than in North America. Economic resources in North America are not allocated based on the ethnic diversity in the city unlike Pakistan and India.
The creation of Pakistan was due to the fear of the elite class of Pakistan that they may be deprived of the economics resource they were enjoying since the British rule. Congress under Nehru has already presented an Economics Reform Agenda, whereas Muslim League had no such document. So they used religion as a political tool for their own benefit. They preached two nation theory and when Pakistan was created Jinnah refused to take more migrants from India in 1948 which seems to be ridiculous act. Bro, I can speak whole day on these Socio-Economic issue in Pakistan, as I am a student of Economics, and Finance for last 37 years.
I totally agree with you and Waseem that we should remove these misunderstanding to weave a united society, above from subnational differences and fair allocation of economic resources, equal political power sharing etc.

@@ThePakistanExperience Thanks a lot. I have been living in Canada for last 20 years and have hundreds of friends here. There were a couple of incidents where some people were vandalized being Muslims but the Govt & society reacted very positively. We can't eliminate it 100%.
