I never could stand that trope in children's television (believe or not, it is a trope, there are a lot of old children's tv shows that have done this trope in at least one episode), where everyone is a dick and ignores the main character so they can build up the hype of the surprise party when it is revealed. Especially when they way too often play it off like the main character is in the wrong for being upset that everyone forgot his birthday. Like what a terrible message for kids.
The show could build hype for the audience by showing the other characters and how they worked together to create the surprise, which really teaches kids how to think how to work as a team to show appreciation to their friends instead of pulling pranks
Being one of the 2 directors (the Cavity Goon, James Murray was the other), was like being able to go to work - "play" - with some of the most fun, energetic people I've ever had the joy to create with. The stage which held "Flossmore Valley" was our sandbox and together we loved every week as we brought Timmy and his friends to life. Our goal was to be entertaining (my montra: "You can't teach somebody who isn't in the room: With T.V., if it's not fun or interesting, that "leaving the room" is just a remote click away.) and also personal, especially where it concerned our young viewers and what might have been challenges and victories in their lives. In my 45 years as a DGA director, this series is one of my very favorites.
Thank you so much for helping create this show. I have NVLD, so it was extremely hard for me to understand concepts, jokes, etc in other shows, but Timmy the Tooth was perfectly fine for me! I have distinct memories of two songs but one sticks out more, the Itchy Polkadot Blues song. That song led to me sticking stickers on my face or dolls for quite a while haha. Thanks again for so many happy childhood memories. :)

I literally have not thought about Timmy the Tooth in 25 years. You've unlocked a long sealed off core memory. Neurons in my brain are freaking out right now.
I knew a girl in high schools whose friends tried to throw a surprise party and did the “we’re busy on your birthday” thing and she was so upset that when she was told where to go to see everyone she didn’t show up
On my 16th the only person that showed up was the person hosting my party. Everyone else said they'd go just to make fun of me for thinking they really would.
I was haunted by commercials featuring that tooth, so I drew a comic featuring an anthropomorphic tooth and his Tooth Care Team of dental hygiene assistants and finally never had to think about it again until this video. Thank you for dredging up those memories.
The cavity goon thing looks like the grouch's Floridan cousin who's lived on the street for 5 years due to his meth addiction making it impossible for him to keep a job.
I’m sorry but I fucking *LOVE* that cavity goon. The rap was fantastic, the puppet design is beautiful, and it looks incredibly well made. Props to everyone who worked on this show, it’s phenomenal.
The phenomenon he’s talking about at the start reminds me of how I thought I had imagined LazyTown. It wasn’t until Villain Number 1 became a meme that I realized it was real. I talked to more than a handful of people and they had no idea what I was talking about when I said there was a pink haired girl, a blue sports acrobat guy, and a bunch of weird puppets
Now all I have is only the intro that can be found by RUclips and the countless dog toys to prove that my beloved Lambchop's Play-Along existed. I'm not even sure if there is youtube proof of Eureeka's Castle :(
@@ShadowFoxSF I remember Lamb Chop! In had the puppet and everything! Oddly, I have also noticed that the only reference I see to it anymore is dog toys haha
This episode taught me that even when no one wishes you a happy birthday on your birthday it's okay because they're all planning something big. Anyway I've sat alone in my house each year and nothing...this party is gonna be rad.
Oh my gosh. When I was seven years old my grandma took me to the mall to go “birthday shopping” where I got to pick out stuff with my birthday money. We went to FYE and I bought this exact same video. I thought it was special because it was Timmy’s birthday and also my birthday. I watched this video so many times, I remembered every single line of dialogue watching this, and I haven’t seen this in at least twenty years. Thank you, Eddy for allowing me to unlock a part of my brain I haven’t accessed in ages. And also, even as a kid I thought the Cavity Goon was a prick
When I was a kid strawberry shortcake had an episode with this exact premise and I remember thinking it was stupid. But then when I was in high school I went home really upset and crying to my mom one day because my friends were avoiding me and talking behind my back. That's when she told me that they were planning a surprise party 😬 I immediately remembered strawberry shortcake and felt like I owed her an apology.
@@ashikjaman1940 Because, unfortunately, many children experience bullying; and sometimes, that experience can be caused by their own friends. Children just need a reminder that people do still love them, even if it may not seem that way. It's a commonly used trope because, obviously, children aren't watching every single show out there. It's just safer to have a kind and simple message in many kids' shows, rather than only one message in one show that would be easy to miss. Hopefully that makes a bit of sense as to why it's a common plot. (Edited a sentence for clarity.)
and its all done in a way that makes the birthday character feel forgotten and useless and always gets cut off right before telling the people planning the birthday party its their birthday
like the "i have 2 friends that want to do thing but i can only bring 1" episode and the more common "rapidly multiplying pest that combines into larger pest" from Transformers, My Little Pony, Ninja Turtles, and Big hero 6
Would like to personally thank u for reintroducing this nightmare fuel back into my life. I have spent the last decade searching “creepy Timmy the toaster looking puppet” only to get no where. Glad our libraries kept the same stock of vhs tapes
I have gone over 15 years thinking that I made this up. That the weird show I watched at my cousins house who live in the middle of nowhere and who I haven't seen in a decade was just a fever dream. I could never mention it to others out of fear that I'd get the same horrified reaction from them as I did from my family who swore that my cousins never played such a weird tv show while I was there. I had finally accepted that I had made it up, when this appeared on my recommended feed. Subscribed.
You see I get this because like even watching this, my brain keeps telling me it's my literal cousin because he looks and sounds just like him. It's kinda frightening how similar they are
i can't imagine being a writer back in the day for kid's media. like what goes on to make them think "yeah let's make a musical about a sentient fucking tooth" "no it's not about taking care of your teeth"
Yeah that's true. However it kind of has "pro-brush propaganda". Like the tooth man and the toothpaste tube man are moral and ethical people while the candy and the cavity are terrible people.
I remember this being advertised in a lot of the cartoons I'd watch on VHS. I guess they were trying to build up a dramatic situation in that story, when realistically they could have gone about the surprise birthday party without resorting to neglectful tactics. For instance, having one or two friends hang out with Timmy for the day, tricking him into believing that they were going to have a small celebration of his birthday by simply hanging out. It would have given a more positive experience, and then elevated that afterwards with the real party. 😊
In that prequel episode, Timmy helped teach Grant the 5 year old giant how having your baby teeth fall out is a normal part of growing up (also that only giants have sentient teeth.)
Hi Eddy! You just posted about the support on the rainforrest cafe vid and I noticed this one was the only under a mil and im actually mad because this is one of my FAVORITE videos because i loveedd timmy the tooth and I was so happy to see someone talk about it! Like none of my friends had heard of it I thought I was alone with timmy lol Just spreading some love to you and anyone who reads this ♥️
I haven't checked, but I'm completely positive that this thing that you loved when you were five MUST have been made by the same people that made something I loved when _I_ was 5. The main character sounds exactly like Toby Terrier.
I *VAGUELY* remember this. I ws five when it was filmed and I remember watching it at like that year or a year later. When you showed footage of it, I started to remember the sequence on the mountain and the weird sequence with the goon in the house. I managed to put this entire thing in the back of my memory somewhere. What triggered it is remembering the SMELL of the VHS tape case.
Joke explained: when Timmy says he wants to get picked on, not only is he desperate for attention, he also is a tooth, and getting “picked on” is good for dental hygiene, like a toothpick.
A even weirder feeling is when your parents tell you that you used to watch a show you don't remember, so when you go and check out on google you can't really tell if you actually remember the images you are watching or if your mind is just creating fake memories and you are convincing yourself you recognize them
8:33 I know, the “Aw, my friends don’t care about my special day! I’m so lonely and sad! WAIT, THEY WERE PLANNING A SURPRISE PARTY ALL ALONG!” plot always bothered me as a little kid. Like, I get that the friends don’t want to give the surprise away, but they could at least wish him a happy birthday?
I’m so glad that I’m not the only one who thinks about this obscure children’s puppet show from the 90’s . Every time I mention it to someone they have no idea what I’m talking about 😭😭
I always found it weird that every tv show that ever had an episode about a surprise party would have the entire cast avoiding the main character and refusing to acknowledge that it's their birthday guys, you can tell them happy birthday, the party is the surprise, not the fucking date
Oh my god, this dug up a repressed memory of a book that was in my dentist’s office forever ago. It was called “The Tale of Tall Toothbrush” and the illustrations were freaky as hell
I never actually watched Timmy the Tooth, but I was a kid in the mid/late 90's and whenever my sister and I would visit our grandma during the summer, without fail we would watch a VHS of the Little Rascals movie that had that same ad...and this video awakened a visceral memory in me of sitting in front of that tiny TV and hearing that theme song. Memory is a crazy thing
This unlocked some deep memories. Also Eddy and I being the same age is strange-like Eddies not 32? He’s he’s not 32? But he has a mustache. Doesn’t add up.
I have such passing memories of Timmy the Tooth... I couldn't have told you what he looked like off the top of my head...but I recognise him. I had to be told the name of his toothbrush dog and didn't remember it existed until I saw it... I didn't remember anything else.... I'm glad this video was done.
@@ShadowFoxSF Yeah for me the toothbrush is what jogged my memory. Also the peppermint lady is really familiar as well. It's super weird, I remember tons of media from when I was a kid and I just generally have excellent memory from my younger years. Hell I remember watching The Munsters with my dad at three years old. But for some reason this one had been nearly completely wiped from my memory! I think it's the horrifying Cavity Goon, must have scarred little baby me haha
He was actually born the same month as my sister who I'm 8 years older than. I still think of her as a teenage kid in my head even though she's 25, the fact that she and Eddy are roughly the same age constantly blows my mind.
I remember watching this... LOL what did we use to watch as kids. I also was born in 1996, I remember veggie tales, teletubbies, elmo... the list goes on. This brings back memories. Def got a new subscriber!
The amount of relief I feel as an adult knowing now for certain that this show was never a fever dream or figment of my adolescent imagination is insurmountable 😮💨
"Spooky Tooth" scared me when I was young. Imagine going from Elmo's World to being buried alive in a haunted extremely dark pyramid surrounded by weird creatures and magic books that make jpegs and summon long dead people.
Oh my god. The matrix is real! Im 32 years old. I have not thought about this show in literally decades. In fact I'm not even sure if I ever actually watched it or not. When I was a kid I had a couple VHS movies that advertised Timmy the tooth before the feature presentation. Anyway, all day I've been singing the theme song.. Came out of nowhere. I couldn't even remember what show or movie it was from. Just that i used to see and hear it on those vhs's when I was young... Then just now I sit down to watch some RUclips, and right on my home page is your thumbnail of Timmy the Tooth! Immediately it all came flooding back to me! How freaking insane is that?!

This episode taught me that even when no one wishes you a happy birthday on your birthday it's okay because they're all planning something big. Anyway I've sat alone in my house each year and nothing...this party is gonna be rad.
the fact that you lost focus for stickers is so relatable
I wanted to see the stickers!
Thats the most awkward story I've ever heard.
Why was this such a common plot in children's cartoons?
Oh yeah, the birthday trope with many cliches galore.
Still waiting for my surprise party.
That surprise birthday party thing is literally done in every kids show.
and its all done in a way that makes the birthday character feel forgotten and useless and always gets cut off right before telling the people planning the birthday party its their birthday

drugs, mostly.
Well the surprise birthday party trope has been used many times before. So I never saw a problem with it.
