    Also wanted to add something regarding this video. I recently replaced my motor blower resistor switch and it did the trick for about 2 weeks, then the fan settings 1-3 wouldn't work, but setting 4 did work. After doing my research, I learned the motor blower fan unit itself needed to be replaced, as this is a common thing associated with only the high fan setting working. I replaced the fan blower motor only to find out that nothing changed (still, only setting 4 on the fan switch worked). Called a guy I take my car to at times who owns a Midas shop and is very knowledgeable in general about all cars. He told me that, when you replace the motor fan resistor switch you must ALSO replace the fan blower motor fan. Reason; the older motor blower fan will blow out the motor resistor switch after a while.......That's exactly what happened to me. As soon as a replaced the motor fan resistor switch (again) everything was back to normal. So, I ended up spending about $50 more than I needed to, but fixed the issue which is a $400 job.

      The dealership also told us this independently of you saying it. But we are going to just try the Resistor first. Anyone do the blower motor? is this difficult?

      I thought replacing the motor blower was easier than replacing the resistor switch. It basically drops down once to loosen the mounting screws. I would highly recommend you replace both at the same time. I spent another $90 on a resistor switch because the older blower motor put too much strain on the new resistor switch. Trust me on this one !
      You're still saving a ton of money in the long run by replacing both of these parts yourself.

      Mark, I know your post is 2 years old, but I wanted to add that you’re absolutely correct. If the blower motor itself is going bad, the resistor will burn up again. However, the bad resistor is a known issue for Honda, so it may not be the blower motor. And, to diagnose whether the blower motor is bad may cost as much or more than replacing the resistor yourself. So for me, it’s a safe bet to just replace the resistor and see what happens. If it goes out again, then you know the blower motor also needs to be replaced. If not, you just saved yourself a chunk of change. But, this video is also…6-7 years old. If you have an older Fit, chances are the blower motor is also going bad.

    • @markthompson4953
      @markthompson4953 2 года назад

      I hear what you're saying, don't disagree with you. I was told by a Honda guy that replacing the resistor switch and blower motor go hand in hand. Had I installed the motor blower unit with the new resistor switch the first time I would have saved about $60. I was told that a mechanic will charge $500-$600 for this job, so I still saved about $300-$400 installing both the parts by myself.

    Great video. Very helpful to get our 2012 Fit ready for a summer road trip. I made one small tweak: I unplugged the wiring harness from the old part, attached the new, and tested it briefly to make sure it fixed the switching issue. Then I finished removing the old part and installed the new. Also, I found it easier to start the top screw by hand from below to get it set, then finish tightening from above with the long Philips. Thanks again.

    • @OlliverVars
      @OlliverVars  Год назад

      Agree on getting the top screw set by hand. I just replaced the blower motor and resistor in my mother-in-law’s 2011 Ford Escape. I did the same thing where I tested the new resistor to see if it fixed the speed issue before screwing it in. It’s a good trick. Thanks for sharing.

    This was a very helpful video, thanks a lot! Before replacing the resistor in my Honda, i read up on the issue and found out it was recommended to change the blower motor itself at the same time to avoid the resistor breaking again in 6 months. Thats even easier than changing the resistor. Just a tip for others having the same issue(fan only working on the highest setting).

    • @howtostretch

      Sound advice! Quick question: when you take out the blower motor, is it easier to get to the resistor? I am short and could not reach to the bottom screw on the resistor (if my arm was a bit longer 😂, no problem, and I did use a short screwdriver). I did take out the bottom dash panel, but not the glove box door itself. Thanks!

    • @eivindnyhus9181
      @eivindnyhus9181 Год назад

      @@howtostretch The motor is positioned in the slots underneath the glove compartment, not 'behind it' like the resistor is - so Im sad to say removing the motor first doesnt make getting to the resistor any easier. I ended up having to buy an extra long screwdriver to get to the resistor screws. With a properly dimensioned tool at hand, getting to the screws and changing out the resistor was no problem at all. Good luck! :)

      @@eivindnyhus9181 Thanks for the input! I am thinking about removing the glove box door, in addition to the lower panel. I just need a tiny bit more room to get to the screws. Again, thanks.

    Awesome and thank you. When I went for a quote from the Honda dealer, they said it was going to be close to $400 to repair, including a new fan motor and switch. Turns out that the resistor was all I needed. (2011 Honda Fit Sport)

    • @artfquinn
      @artfquinn 5 лет назад

      Chance for people who have this problem need to replace both resistor (switch you called) and fan motor because as the blow motor aged, at some point the resistor would be blown (high temperature melt a small part inside the resistor, you can solder it back if you don't want to spend $8 or $10 for a new one. Although opening the old resistor is tricky.) As now the prices of new parts on EBay are much cheaper than from Honda dealers. It is about $55 for the blow motor and $10 for the resistor. They are cheap because they are directly imported from the Chinese manufactures who made them. No middle man involved. Honda dealers sell the same items for $280 and $35.
      Both are easy to be replaced. All you need are Philip screwdriver (one very long and one very short) for resistor and Torx screwdriver for blow motor (slot screwdriver can do, but you need to be careful). Replacing blow motor is a two-man job because it is heavy so you need someone to hold for you when you screw/unscrew.

    I like is video. Removing the glovebox really helps as does having good lighting. Instead of buying new parts I tried this and it worked. First remove motor and clean up all the dust and crap. OIl the bearing with light machine oil. Just a couple drops. If it now turns freely and quietly with no rubbing then it is OK. Second, remove the resistor assembly. Open it up by straightening out the tabs. When you pull it apart you should see that there is piece that is unsoldered. Solder it back together. I used a 60 watt iron and a small electronics clamp and a bit of new solder on the joint. Heat from the bottom of the 3-layer sandwich and let it cool off. Before reinstalling resistor and motor plug them in and see if it works on all 3 speeds. Good luck!

    • @artfquinn
      @artfquinn 5 лет назад +4

      It is $200 at non-Honda garage. It is $500 at Honda dealer. Honda will ask customers to replace motor, too. That part is $300 and unnecessary. The resistor part is $30 at Honda and only $10 or $20 if you mail order. The labor will cost you about $120-160. And the labor you need to know is all covered at this three minute video.
      Diagnosis is $50 to $100. But you did not need the diagnosis. Internet provides a good one. Honda Fit has this common problem on blower motor resister. Just use Google.

    Thanks for the video and the information. Replaced my blower motor resistor switch and it restored my fan function. The only issue I had ( and this was my issue, not due to the video) was my glove box. Even dropping it down it still got in the way of getting good torque on the screws holding the housing. It would have been way easier if I could have completely removed the glove box door, but I played it safe and just worked around it by removing the bottom panel. Thanks again for the video !

      There is a Honda TSB for the blower motor and the resister. The TSB implies that a defective blower motor may cause the resister to fail, and to replace both parts. I have the same issue and plan to first change the resister and then wait and see. I recommend a subscription to Alldatadiy.com for your vehicle. You will have access to the TSBs, diagrams, trouble-shooting steps, etc. You’ve probably already fixed this by now, but this may be helpful to others who are having this common problem.

      I have the same problem. Dealership says the motor is drawing too much current and that there's a Service Bulletin on this subject. They plan to make sure something didn't fall into the fan (dirt, pencil etc) [it is also making a noise when it runs on high]. The service tech said it'll blow again - and most likely requires the blower be replaced too. They want $500 for the whole thing. Yeah - no. I paid that much to have the A/C replaced in my VW.

      I replaced the resistor, worked for only two hours then it stopped working again. I search information on Internet. The chance is high for the need to replace both the resistor and the fan blower motor because if the blower motor is bad, it will break the resistor very soon. Some said the blower motor only took less than 30 seconds to break the new replaced resistor. There is another youtube video showing people how to open up the blower motor and make the fan spin smoothly to fix the problem. But it is a lot of work.
