Hi any idea what would cause my 09 to momentarily cut power while driving down the road. No power steering, stereo blinks and the whole dash notifications light up all just for a second?
+Wild West We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
2012 honda fit purchased 2 during covid out of fear of high gas to do uber. Best decision ive ever made in my life. I honestly believe gas prices went up to combat the affordability of these vehicles and mpg. Honda fit helped me out of poverty. Thank you designers of fit. You were definitely thinking of the little guys. 💯.
I can confirm just one of the top five problems on my ‘09 with 135k miles - hatch release mechanism due to New England winter salt. Such a solid, well built car.
These Fits are the best bulletproof economic vehicle Honda has ever made HANDS DOWN. The best cars for gig work like Uber DoorDash Amazon Flex etc. Kudos to whoever in Honda that came up with the idea of the Fit.
I have a '13 Sport 5 Speed with 84k miles (I know, pretty much a baby). No issues whatsoever, but I also have regular 30k mile interval full services done. This car is rock solid, absolutely perfect.
The GE8 is going to acheive legendary status for reliability one day. The L15A7 engine is a gem. Low power output and an outdated design yes, but dang near bullet proof.
bought mine at 280 000 km... gone past 300 000 km now. Replaced a coil pack the other day and misfire was solved. i owe it a lot but it keeps going. strong car
I bought a brand new '09 Fit Sport (manual transmission) in October of '08, so likely one of the first 500 of this generation purchased in Canada. I rang up 312,000 kms (about 195,000 miles) over the following 10-1/2 years before gifting it to our daughter. She's still driving it and it now has around 350,000 kms racked up in total. I had none of the five issues listed in this video, but I did have the following snags in chronological order: 1. First problem was the paint. It just seemed too fragile, scratching very easily. Mine was the dark metallic blue shade that Honda referred to as "vivid blue". 2. At 153,000 kms (about 96,000 miles) the alternator died. Car was out of warranty but only three years old at that time, so aftermarket parts were not yet a thing for these cars. We were still at the mercy of Honda for most stuff. I called Honda. Replacement new alternator was priced at almost $1300 taxes in. I almost fell out of my chair. I didn't recall seeing "Porsche" stamped anywhere on the outside of that alternator - only Mitsubishi. A friend who knew a starter/alternator dealer did some online research and found a non-Honda-sourced identical new alternator for $460, so I bought that one and installed it myself. 3. At 200,000 kms the oil pressure sender sprung a leak. Replaced with new one, quick and inexpensive, ie:
I have a 2009 Fit, bought it new. Have not had any of these problems but still enjoyed this video in case something comes up. The Fit is my dream car, I had 4 used Accords before I bought my Fit. The tech at Honda of Orem, Utah told me they had a woman bring in a Fit with 300,000 miles for servicing, it was the original engine. Amazing!
My #2 plug on our '09 Fit Sport with 118K miles got loose on a Sunday during vacation trip. Fortunately a Honda dealer fixed it first thing Monday AM. We still lost $150 on event tickets Sunday, and the repair (all plugs and a coil pack replaced) was over $400. He did tell us we were lucky the plug hole threads were OK or the head would need replacement. Anyway we got home safe and since then the car's been good. But now I know this was a common problem with this car.
I bought a 2011 Fit S brand new. It currently has 220,000+ Miles. My #1 problem has been the fog lights catching rocks/debris on the highway and getting cracked! I have probably replaced each side 4 times! Last year I had the known issue with the electro magnetic A/C clutch. I found videos on here on how to repair so my brother and I attempted that ourselves. It is still blowing cold air a year later. Another common Fit issue I have experienced is the HVAC Fan Capacitor issue(where u lose 1 or more of your “Fan” Speeds) which was another easy fix. Other than those issues, which all were pretty easy fixes. This car is a tiny beast!
The hatch handle on my '09 was rusted solid. It took QUITE a lot of finagling, but I finally got it working great. It's been about a year and it's still good.
This car is so much fun to drive and has very few problems. Most of the problems I've had are from natural wear and tear (138k mi.) and living in the rust belt. I love my Fit and will probably drive it until the wheels literally fall off... At which point I will be getting a GK 😂
My wife has an orange 09 fit 5 SPD sport. We love it, it has 200k and it's barely needed anything but maintenance, runs perfect. Never even had the ac compressor problem, I've never heard of these issues. With the plugs we did have the right axle snap this winter, it was cheap though, like ,230 with a tow. And I did need to put a hatch handle in. I had to open it from the inside for a week till I got the handle
Like another Fit owner describes in a comment below, I also solved the tailgate handle problem by spraying WD40 on the pin which the handle rotates around. The handle works great now!! On the axles, I benefited from a recall; they replaced both axles for no charge. I have not experienced the other issues (spark plugs were replaced a few months ago).
Obviously if spraying WD-40 up and around the hinge works, great. But they do get so rusted and cruddy, that doesn’t work. Tried it multiple times. Just last week I switched out the back latch on my 2010 Honda Fit after watching a few RUclips videos and ordering a $15 latch. Pretty easy and now works great! Hardest part is getting the plastic coverings off without breaking the little plastic connectors. Helps if it’s warm out. If cold, I’d run a hair dryer on it or somehow warm up the plastic.
I have an 09 Fit Sport, with the 5 speed manual, and I love it!!! I'm 5+ years into ownership, and I've never considered letting it go. So damn fun to drive, so so much cargo room, great gas mileage, hardly ever does it need any repair, and the limits are accessible. I wring it out all the time, and it just keeps going. If I ever decide to take it off the road, I'll probably turn it into a track car, the handling is so crisp, it's a blast!
I love my Fit. I've had all those issues except the fule door thing. Wonderful car. My axl snapped while I was waiting for the new part to come in from a recall.
I just replaced mine at 150k miles. I installed a new clutch and flywheel kit. Both never quite were right when I first got it at 40kmiles. I don't think the first owner treated it right. Has she replaced the spark plugs? I had to replace mine twice so far, and ignition coils.
The clutch master cylinder on the manuals and ac compressors are the weak links on this car. Great cars though on my second one .first one had 320k and still ran strong
Had an 09 Fit Sport 5AT I bought new 09/18/2008 I sold it 03/08/2022 with almost 302,000 miles regular maintenance still blew ice cold AC with the original compressor, the original engine didn't burn or leak oil, and transmission I bought my 2nd Honda Fit a 17 EX-L lease return CPO 12/14/2020 the guy I sold my original Fit to bought it because filling up his 2020 Silverado was breaking his wallet and I really didn't drive it that much so I sold it he's driving that car everywhere and it's still going strong
I was looking at a 2009 automatic honda fit that a guy was selling for his mom. He said she got 39 mpg, no matter how she drove it with that CVT transmission. People have said the automatics getter better gas mileage, because the manuals have such a low 5th gear in the Honda Fit models. They were saying the manuals run at 2800 rpm and the automatics only run at 2200 rpm, but I've never actually test driven one though.
I have seen 3 of these on my Honda Fit personally. One of the spark plug was really loose, didn’t realize it was from Honda. My axle had the rubber damper and it snapped there because of rust. The tailgate handle has some issues but it was an easy fix and now I just hit the unlock button three times on my key fob for it to open without issues.
Some good advice I wanna share. These are awesome little cars but unfortunately atleast in rust belt Alberta they tend to rot out fairly quick in the undercarriage. I use seafoam deep creep and motorcycle chain lube. Wash out all the dirt and crud from underneath the car especially the back wheel wells. Let it all dry up. Spray everything. Deep creep for all the nooks and crannies. Everything else unload a few cans of chain lube. Helps if you know where to spray. I also take my door panels off and spray the inside of doors. Anywhere moisture or salt collect you wanna clean out and spray. I do this once a year. No worries about rust. The idea is to seal off the metal from the outside environment. I wanna keep my car nice for as long as it lasts.
Have a 2009 with relatively low miles (130k). I've had the spark plug issue, smelled exhaust in the cabin. I have a slightly leaky shaft seal in the engine, I replaced the lift gate handle, and finally I think there may be a shift servo or something going out but I'll handle that if/when I need to. IMO the weakest part in this car is the battery.
I have 2013 sport 5 speed. I put a 51r instead of 151 and never had an issue since. I had to turn the battery a little and weld a bracket to hold it. My cold air intake tube goes around the battery next to my headlight and my filter is in my front bumper.
Great video and I appreciate you sharing this with all of us. From my experience with the handle, you can just spray lubricant in the handle when it starts acting before it completely seizes and that should be fine. I've never had to replace my handle on either Fit we had and used that method and had zero problems afterwards.
My 2009 Sport just had this problem... the fan blower would only work on speed 4 (high). Found a TB describing a fault with high current draw from the fan motor. This burns out the resistor pack. Fix is a new fan motor and resistor. There are many YT videos on the easy repair.
I’ve had tie rods, ball joints, and wheel bearings go on my 2013…the tie rods have now been replaced twice. Also the wipers have loosened up and have too much play and knock against the passenger side pillar. Other than these issues at 130k miles it is running as good as the day I bought it.
My wifes 09 fit ejected a spark plug at around 50k miles. Other 3 were loose. Outside warranty, but Honda covered 50% of the cost to replace the head. 4 months later, a transmmission solenoid died. We have also been through 2 HVAC fans (dealer rate for the fan job was $400!)
LOOK AT THE UNDERCARRIAGE, ESPECIALLY at the rear! I was about to replace the transmission on my 2009 Fit, which we bought used. The mechanic showed me the rotted frame, and advised me to think twice before investing more $ for repairs. It's really too bad, because I really like the car. Now I'll have a better idea what to pay attention to when I buy used.
Mine had all these issues and the spark plug in cylinder 3 popped out 3 times and threads became damaged. Had to do a helicoil for the fix and it’s still holding up after almost 1,000 miles. Hope it lasts a long times. I’m at 163,000 miles.
Spark plug blowout can be fixed with tap and inserts. It's time consuming (greasing the tap to pick up shavings, and vacuuming all the residual shaving) but it's definitely less time and cheaper than replacing your head.
Thank you so much, I bought a 2009 Honda fit in July 2023. Haven’t had any problem except the possible passenger axle, noticed some shaking sometimes on the highway but I do mostly city driving. Gotta check the dealership 🙏🙏 thank you
2013 in my driveway.. Only issues with it have been the liftgate handle and one not mentioned here but I found out is common is the hood latch going wonky and setting the alarm off at random. I unplugged it because who cares if that's on the alarm anyway. Problem solved.
I have a 2009 Fit...this is the only car to do this but the wipers only work on high speed. I currently have the not working rear hatch also. The car has 290kms on it but runs perfect and drives perfect.
pretty accurate.. i had the liftgate handle problem and cv axles were replaced on recall. mine also had an input shaft bearing noise that seems like its pretty common on the manual transmission models.
I think my input shaft may have begun acting up the last couple months. Not quite sure, but it's pretty much constant when the engine's running. I hope it's something simpler to address...
Lma springs. Lost motion assembly springs are under recall on 2009 to 2010 models, suprised they did not list this, but still a very reliable great car.
I'm in England, one other you may like to add,in spare wheel storeage part, this can take in water, usually tailgate seal,or,there is a seal around that storage part, not a problem for your dry states, but, thy cant all be dry.We get a lot of wet weather by comparison, and roads are rocksalted in snow.Hope this is of interest.
2009 Honda fit, replaced AC compressor last year with used, liftgate handle issues, rusting axel replaced under warranty, Transmission replaced last year for used $1500 (runs fine now). So, was good, but now giving some issues. Running decent now, 190K
Re lift gate frozen handle: don't have to replace, examin rusted handle with flash light, give rested handle hinge pin a "rust bust" soaking, manipulate handle to break up rust, wipe up excess rust bust, apply just a bit of medium weight oil to handle hinge pin to lubricate, do the lubrication once a year, no more frozen lift gate handle.
180000 km, no Problems. I replaced "rusty handle axle" by stainless steel axle, I use motorcycle chain greese to keep water off. 1st and 3rd gear synchonisation is getting a bit bad. The engine is very econmical: ~4.8-5 l/100 km in summer, 5.2-5.5 l/100 km in winter
I've had to replace an engine coil, fan motor, and thermostat on my 2013 Fit, only 96,000 miles so mine might have been one of the few problematic ones
My wife has an orange 09 fit 5 spd sport, it has 200k and has barely needed anything other than maintenance, it has had these small issues, but ,in general , it's an excellent car. We love it
Honda has revised the sparkplug tightening torque from 13 to now 20 foot pounds because of loosening. Don't ignore the check engine light because no 1 and 2 plugs can loosen at 13 ft lbs and if you catch it early as indicated by a misfire code all you have to do is remove the plug, wipe off all the carbon from the coil pack and plug, lightly never seize the plug threads, and torque to 17 to 20 ft lbs. In 60 years I never torqued plugs and never had problems but in this case you have to because it's a lot more torque than you'd think.
You dont have to remove all that intake bs if you just remove the wipe motor and metal cowl piece under the wipers. I ad to hhelicoil my girlfriends first cylinder because it shot the plug out of the block on the highway. It was dangling inside the coil that was still clipped to the harness. The cowl method take maybe an hour, start to finish. Way easier than removing intake nonsense.
I have a 2013 sport. Other than that darn liftgate handle, unfortunately the rear wheel wells don't have the plastic covers leaving the underside of the fenders exposed and they start rusting. 😢
I have a 2009 Base model that had the rear hatch handle get really bad. A sprayed a little WD-40 on it, loosened right up and its now working great. I love this car. My wife hates it, but Imma drive it until the wheels fall off.
2012 Fit Sport, 103,000 miles, with no major issues. For a year, when temp dips below 40 deg F, I hear a noise similar to when one tries to start the car with the engine running. It lasts for a second, then is gone until the next cold snap. Could this be the dreaded problem with the variable timing control? Thanks for your great presentation.
I found the center console with armrest new on e-bay for the Honda Fit for $44. "Rotatable Storage Box Armrest Center Console For Honda Fit Jazz 2009-2013 12 11" Brand: XUKEY. Made in California.
Ive got the 09 sport ge8 haha and man the car is great. Got it with 60k on it and its got 170k now. Replaced the spark plugs yes and my door lock actuator but thats it. Super fun to drive out here in Southern California.
P0171 is lean condition that is caused from a vacuum leak. P0172 is a rich condition.. That is too much fuel, not too much air so its not caused by leaks..
This only applies for non-NGK spark plugs which come from the factory with proprietary anti-seize on them. Every Honda I've ever seen and/or worked on came from the factory with NGK plugs. However, if you remove the NGK plugs for inspection, you should apply a LITTLE anti-seize to replace what came off during removal.
"problems". The only real issue I see here is the front axle. This reminds me of the "problems" on the 7th and 8th gen civics you guys did. It almost seems like you guys are grasping at straws here with these Hondas. lol. Do the 9th gen civics next. Can't wait to see the "problems" on those. haha
The lift gate handle is a design flaw. It can be disassembled, rust cleaned up, reassembled, and reinstalled in less time than it takes to visit a dealer. The hinge shaft is carbon steel, .... it rusts. A simple fix.
Half a year ago or so I bought my first car: A used 2009 Honda fit sport. It's not the *smoothest* ride, but really the biggest issue was the spark plug issue. Got those replaced for like 200 bucks total and no problem since. It overall runs pretty darn well for a car with 180k miles on it. Heck it runs better than the rest of my family's cars, despite them also being toyotas/hondas with similar mileages. I love the fuck outta this car and I will drive it until it quite literally falls apart on the road :)
Another common problem, common enough to have RUclips videos on how to fit it, is the failure of the unlock on the driver door caused by fatigue of essential part. Key, remote, inner and outer door handle, nothing worked.
There is a recall on the axle not being treated for rust. Having bought mine in Massachusetts it was covered by Honda at no charge. The car just would not go into gear and move. Axle was snapped into. The other big failure is the AC units. There was a class action suit because of the faulty compressors installed on the Fit. I fixed this problem by filling down the center part of the clutch and reinstalling. Been working for two years. The locks are a problem as well if you don't have remote option for unlocking the doors.
Hi Lamar I'm new to fixing cars on my own, so I know this sounds like a stupid question. What do you mean by filling down the center clutch and reinstalling? Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
The axle was a recall so they replaced that for me. Airbag too is a recall that was checked. Aside from that the only problem on my fit was the paint peeling off. Im not sure why but its going to be a problem.
I haven’t had any issues, besides the spark plug on cylinder 2 was loose. But that was kinda my fault I did the spark plugs an tighten them by hand with 1/4 turn after snug. Spark plugs came loose after 30kmi. I replaced them with the right torque it’s been 10k miles with no problems. I plan to replace them every 30k miles. Spark plugs are cheap anyways
This video made me glad that my Fit is a 2008. Yes, it had three recalls so far, but those were minor stuff only. Are these '09-'13 Fits made in Japan, America, or somewhere else?

You know the car is ultra reliable when tailgate handle is listed as top 5 issue 😄
The Honda Fit and Element are probably the best 2 Hondas ever built. I have a base 2011 Fit ... love it !

Yep

I am have 2009 with 400 thousand miles it has never given me a problem
My 2009 Sport just had this problem... the fan blower would only work on speed 4 (high). Found a TB describing a fault with high current draw from the fan motor. This burns out the resistor pack. Fix is a new fan motor and resistor. There are many YT videos on the easy repair.
I’ve had tie rods, ball joints, and wheel bearings go on my 2013…the tie rods have now been replaced twice. Also the wipers have loosened up and have too much play and knock against the passenger side pillar. Other than these issues at 130k miles it is running as good as the day I bought it.
Stop hitting pot holes brother 😂
There was a recall on those axles. Had mine replaced last year via the dealer, no charge on my 2012 Fit.
Mine had all these issues and the spark plug in cylinder 3 popped out 3 times and threads became damaged. Had to do a helicoil for the fix and it’s still holding up after almost 1,000 miles. Hope it lasts a long times. I’m at 163,000 miles.
Boot handle issue can be resolved by using a small bottle of WD40😊
Spark plug blowout can be fixed with tap and inserts. It's time consuming (greasing the tap to pick up shavings, and vacuuming all the residual shaving) but it's definitely less time and cheaper than replacing your head.
+@Samuelamnuelgreeneggshamuel Thanks for the feedback!
Thank you so much, I bought a 2009 Honda fit in July 2023. Haven’t had any problem except the possible passenger axle, noticed some shaking sometimes on the highway but I do mostly city driving. Gotta check the dealership 🙏🙏 thank you
+@caseysurgent6091 Thanks for checking us out. Shop for high quality auto parts on 1AAuto.com:

another common issue is water leaks inside from the rear boot hinges, you can put sealent around this which helps stop the leak
Torquing the plugs is still no guarantee they won't loosen between changes (100k miles). At the very least retorque #2 at 50K miles.
It’ll be seized on by that time
2013 in my driveway.. Only issues with it have been the liftgate handle and one not mentioned here but I found out is common is the hood latch going wonky and setting the alarm off at random. I unplugged it because who cares if that's on the alarm anyway. Problem solved.
+Craig Chevalier Thanks for the feedback!
3:49, we had that problem, we pushed the handle back to the front of the car and it worked again
0:48 credit card works well :D. before i fix it, i used it all the time
I'm in England, one other you may like to add,in spare wheel storeage part, this can take in water, usually tailgate seal,or,there is a seal around that storage part, not a problem for your dry states, but, thy cant all be dry.We get a lot of wet weather by comparison, and roads are rocksalted in snow.Hope this is of interest.
I've had to replace the plugs and an axle in the past month. Also did the liftgate handle last summer. Never had a problem up till then though
I've actually had an issue with the lift gate handle. I found locking and unlocking the car with the key fob works.
i am going to see a 2012 Manual FIT tomorrow, thanks for the tips !
Looking at one with 159k for 6500. Been really debating on getting it but not sure its worth it.
Did you get the Fit?
They went up didn’t they? Or am I crazy
as a 12 year owner of a honda fit yeah, i'm so freaking glad i have a honda fit lmfao
I'm looking to buy an old Fit and this was exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Thank you!
2009 Honda fit, replaced AC compressor last year with used, liftgate handle issues, rusting axel replaced under warranty, Transmission replaced last year for used $1500 (runs fine now). So, was good, but now giving some issues. Running decent now, 190K
+ACE GOLFMAN Thanks for the feedback!
If these are the only issues (minor) i will 100% invest in one
My wife has an orange 09 fit 5 spd sport, it has 200k and has barely needed anything other than maintenance, it has had these small issues, but ,in general , it's an excellent car. We love it
My sister own a 2012 Honda Fit, the car runs perfect even though she is not very careful with it. Excellent cars.
I was just going to talk about the liftgate handle heh. I pre-emptively switch spark plugs, mine had the axle recall, and 100% great everywhere else!
I have a 2013 sport. Other than that darn liftgate handle, unfortunately the rear wheel wells don't have the plastic covers leaving the underside of the fenders exposed and they start rusting. 😢
Got all the way to no. 4 thinking I was okay but yup the liftgate always gets stuck!
I have a 2009 Base model that had the rear hatch handle get really bad. A sprayed a little WD-40 on it, loosened right up and its now working great. I love this car. My wife hates it, but Imma drive it until the wheels fall off.
I love the Honda Fit too, great little car, perfect for the city life.
Made in California.
i like your easy teaching abilities, for automobiles, thanks, keep up your easy working ways, peace
This is the best car I ever had no problem for three years just changed oil on regular
It's not a GM, it starts up every time you turn the key! Should be "the top five least problems".
Ive got the 09 sport ge8 haha and man the car is great. Got it with 60k on it and its got 170k now. Replaced the spark plugs yes and my door lock actuator but thats it. Super fun to drive out here in Southern California.
Your so right! My 2013 had all of these issues!
P0171 is lean condition that is caused from a vacuum leak. P0172 is a rich condition.. That is too much fuel, not too much air so its not caused by leaks..
Use antiseize on the sparkplugs. The same should be done for all alloy heads.
Spark plugs will stay tight if you put anti seize on threads.
"problems". The only real issue I see here is the front axle. This reminds me of the "problems" on the 7th and 8th gen civics you guys did. It almost seems like you guys are grasping at straws here with these Hondas. lol. Do the 9th gen civics next. Can't wait to see the "problems" on those. haha
Yes and this guy should've mentioned Honda recalled both passenger's and driver's side
Drive a 22 years old jazz 1.3 dsi sport ,nothing but consumables have been changed starts first turn all year
Thank you for the helpful tips in dealing with those problems!
My 2008 FIT had the coil pack and the electo-magnet in the A/C clutch fail at 203,000 miles. $50 for 4 new coil packs and $50 for a new A/C clutch.
Top 5 problems: gas door might get stuck…handle might get stuck… amazing car!
Just got a 2013 with 67k for 8.2k hopefully it’s reliable af
@@ontopofmyyeti1772 He meant to say "filing" Not "filling"
No issue yet (fingers crossed) on my 2011 with 67K miles but with my bad luck something will eventually happen..
Wow, I experianced #5 and #4 on my Jazz 2009. Now I know what to expect next :)))
hydraulic clutch on the manuals, Spark plugs loosening, Swap the headlight bulbs out for Some leds so they don't go out every 6 months
150k drive it like I stole it and no problems… but I’ll keep an eye out.😉
300k no major issues i need a alignment done tho
I think they removed that push-style fuel door in the 3rd gen. Maybe for good reason.
The axle was a recall so they replaced that for me. Airbag too is a recall that was checked.
Aside from that the only problem on my fit was the paint peeling off. Im not sure why but its going to be a problem.
The paint is notoriously weak, from what I've gathered in all the Fit forums and research. But I love my little '09 5-speed so much!
The passenger side axel is my main worry right now.
Nothing too deep. I'm still in. Looking to pick up a 13 on Monday.
The rear telescope support The joint cracks and the water fits into the trunk, just put black mash with the windshield
#5 should be #1!
Cars don't rust in southern California ❤
mine have been transmission sensor, rear hatch handle, and just now a rear door lock actuator.
So,? Minor things
Boy, that fuel filler door pusher annoys the heck out of me! Everything else in this car is great! I just really need to replace that pusher. Sigh...
Thanks. Could you tell me what the tape-wrapped line, inside the little plastic cover near back inside roofline?
Not a bad list if you ask me. I wouldn't like much more serious issues.
These are last of the Japanese Fits. The ones that came after this (2014 or 2015?) came from Mexico.
Any bore scoring or IMS bearing failures on these?
