- 278. EVERY Resin Artist NEEDS TO KNOW THIS! OMG!
In todays Resin Art video we try the Seahorse molds I touched on in my last video.
I had to film this resin video again after accidently deleting my 1st video! I'm glad I did as I tried two tips that viewers had given me on how to adhere flakes or powders on fully cured resin without having to add a thin layer of resin.
This has blown my mind! Yes, you can flash cure your UV resin to make this possible but for molds like this and certain resin art applications, a flash cure would not be possible.
How did I not know about this before?! This would have saved me so much time and resin!

Hi all, an hour early tonight 😂 Please don't forget to thumbs the vid please. Already 650 views and only 105 thumbs! C'mon guys! 😂 x
@@daniel..cooper I always thumbs up before I watch as I know I’m never going to be disappointed.👍☺️
To make it a bit more simple you could simply paint it with acrylic paint and then once dried just paint it with some resin to seal it.
Thanks for the video! I've just received my first box of UV resin today. Will experiment a bit, but you were the inspiration for getting it. Thanks! Hope you're well.
Oh, goodness, what is WRONG with people?!? I *always* hit Like before I see even a second of your videos. 😁💕👍
Hi Daniel! I always 👍 and watch to the end! I watch on tv so don't usually come online to comment, BUT today I did. 😁
Wanted to suggest that on the large Seahorse, you talked about the sharp spine points. I would say attach small tapering sizes of pearl or "seed beads" to accentuate those spines (and solve the sharp points). Make a beautiful brooch with the large one!
Keep up the great work, I enjoy your channel!
I was watching Claire this morning, she calls the mould with all the cabochons, the Daniel Cooper mould, in her comments! 😂😂😂
😂😂😂 they should rename it, I have probably sold them millions 😂🤣
@@daniel..cooper 😂😂😂
@@daniel..cooper ...he says, as he licks a forefinger and brushes over an eyebrow, proudly! 🤣🤣
I saw that too and laughed. I've replaced mine a half dozen times since I first bought it many years ago, and now I think of it that way, too 😆 🤣 😂 😹
I have the smaller version and yeah I think the Mr. Cooper mold! LOL😉
I had that seahorses mould, you can glue them together back to back and make a 3d sculpture....Maybe even with a layer of flakes inbetween the 2 halves
Definitely, I had plans to do this after I accidentally deleted the first video but I was in such a rush to get it filmed, I forgot 🙈😂
Good observation
My thought exatly, make them full 3D ☺️
Thanks for being upfront & not faking the surprise. That's one of the reasons why I really enjoy your videos. The honesty ❤
Thanks Sue 😁 😊 🫂
Thank you to the two viewers for these wonderful techniques. I learn so many great things on your channel Daniel. Well I learn so much from all of the creators I follow. Thanks so much. 💗
You are very welcome 😁 thank you as always 😊 🫂
Brilliant!! I have a hummingbird festival coming up and sell earrings. Whoa! Can you imagine the color potential with my molds??? 😮❤😊
🤩🤩🤩 Have fun 🥰
I love how they turned out and would back them with black. The detail of the mold is stunning Daniel and good choice for the video. I run over here to watch the video soon as I saw the post IG. Good marketing sir!!!!! 💜👑
Thanks so much 😊 🙏
Those are really amazing! I love the colors! Theye are like illuminated. I adore the tiny ones! They are so cute!
Thanks Lisa 😁 😊 🫂
This helps me so much. I do exclusively UV resin and the whole curing for few seconds thing is stressful. This is much less stressful!! Thanks to those who shared it with you so that you could share it with us!! :)
😁😁😁 I will update the description as soon as I know 😁
Beautiful! I don’t understand the non-thumbs up watchers. Honestly, I thumbs up before I finish watching videos if it’s a channel where I always learn something. Blows my mind when I look at the views to 👍🏻 ratio. Also, your resistance to “game-changer made me giggle”. I support you 100% on that. 🤣 Love the finished seahorses. Thanks for showing up and showing us new things.
Thank you 😁 Yes, so many just watch without giving back 😔 Even if it's a thumbs down, it's still a thumbs 🥰
I keep a flat profile container with about a half inch of sand or clay to rest my items in that are not level, that way I can get them level before adding backing or a thin layer.
Great idea 💡
Lovely work, great tips. Seahorses were perfect showing this technique. Love the glossy highlights. Many thanks for redoing video for us 💖
Thanks Alison 😁 😊 🫂
They turned out beautifully! I can totally see those being glued together, since they're opposite sides, and made into window decoration using transparent colorings, like 3D stained glass almost!
Definitely, I had plans to do this after I accidentally deleted the first video but I was in such a rush to get it filmed, I forgot 🙈😂
I saw someone resting theirs on a bed of rice to level them. Don’t ask me where because I’ve been watching all day. Just stop when I see something interesting. 😊
I usually use tack but have run out 🙈
These are gorgeous. Maybe the smaller ones could be put in to a pendant? That would look pretty cool 😎
Thank you 😁 Yes, definitely 🤩
This truly is a game changer!
😁😁😁
You always make something incredible Daniel, I love your videos. I was thinking a lot about who you remind me of and I figured it out the other day! You're the Bob Ross in the resin art world 😊
Wow, thank you 😊 🙏
😆 that's a good one
Thanks for the tips to those who suggested them. 😊
Thanks Vicky 😁 😊
Just a thought, Daniel, but you could use white/black uv nail varnish to back these. It's much easier to handle 😊
I have tried before but I didn't like the outcome 😢
I love that you are always thinking and experimenting trying different things.
Blue would look beautiful with the Green.
You can also mix the flakes with some isopropyl and then apply it with a small paintbrush. I love the outcome on these ❤❤❤. Well done🥰🥰🥰
I have to try this! 🤯 I swear, I have been hiding under a rock 😂🤣
Yes Wendy from toonpish does this in molds but it also works on cured resin
I'm going to try with varnish or even a thin layer of glue that drys clear.
You can also use blue tack to hold your pieces in place.
Oh, shoot, I recommended that...I should've read all the comments, first! Oh, well...at least another comment will help with the algorithm, right?
Yes, Dan, creators have been using that alc/powder paste for awhile now, BUT...! They coat their molds with the paste before pouring their resin. They *don't* coat their finished product using paste, so far as I've seen, so you're still doing something unique-ish? 😁👍
Awe… sympathies Daniel. I hate it when I accidentally delete a video before uploading.😢
Thank you for sharing this hack! Very useful! ❤❤❤
Not the 1st time 🙈😂 Thank you 😁 🙏
Thanks to the comment artists who passed this tip on. Its a great idea and will save time and resin. Thanks for trying it out for us Daniel😀
You are so welcome! Thank you 😁 😊
Absolutely FANTASTIC resin hack!!! Never knew! 😆 Trying this one for sure 😊
Never would have thought of using alcohol on the back! Genius!❤❤❤
IKR! 🤩
Very nice . I’ve used hairspray on the back it works . ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for sharing this comparison. Like, I've said so many times before you are the best!
Beautiful work! I always dab tack it on and walk away for a half hour. Alcohol looks promising.
Love the seahorse molds!! Thanks for sharing ❤
Thanks Debra 😁 😊
Love the seahorses. Daniel you never cease to amaze me. I'm just catching up to trying the hairspray. Just my 1 cent
Those came out great! Thank you to whoever figured this out, shared the ideas and Daniel for demonstrating it. Now my smaller fondant molds won't be sitting there with me trying to figure out what to do with them!
Thank you 😁 😊
For anyone watching, alcohol is a solvent for resin, this should work with any solvent for any material, look up msds or research to make sure it is safe to do so before though
I should have tested acetone in the vid too 🙈
@@daniel..cooper it probably would have worked, more than likely better, but also i think it's stronger, so it may be too much, good idea to test though
@urjnlegend will definitely try but mine isn't 100% acetone, will order some in 😁
The seahorses really show the colour flip of the flakes. Love the new idea with the alcohol &release spray. Thanks Daniel
Thanks Lyn 😁 😊
I loved everything about this video and the information provided. Thank you for this. I love those seahorses so much!
Thanks so much 😊 🙏
For your stencil idea. you could get a misting spray bottle and spray on the alcohol and let dry, peel off the stencil, and then add the dust on the powder. I'm going to give it a try, but my videos are on wire wrapping. Evan though i do make cabochons sometimes .
All your videos are epic Daniel. I’m so thankful for you.
Thank you 😁
Hi Daniel, love your vids, to get multi layering with the technique your using try using Speedball metal foil adhesive with a brush it is extra sticky, dried clear, it layers mica powder beautifully with out the fear of muddying your colours, you can control where it goes and a lil bit goes a long ways.. I use it all the time to coat my wood shapes with mica powder and coat with resin and it stops my wooden shapes from absorbing too much of the resin, it also gives resin a surface to bond with if you want to dome. Word of warning, be sure to clean your brush immediately after or you will ruin your brush, I just use disposable eyelash adhesive brushes.
Thank you for sharing Daniel! These are great techniques! ❤
Thank you 😁 😊
These are so pretty. Thank you Daniel.😊
You’re welcome 😊 Thanks so much 🥰🫂
Michelle from glitz and glitter had used tack it let it dry and used flakes to fix a mistake and then does it intentionally to finish a certain mold. Nice to know about the alcohol too!
Brilliant. I just cleaned resin with alcohol and thought I’d ruined it. Now I know how to use it for my advantage.
So beautiful! I appreciate your insight of how to do things.
Dude I could watch you all day- your voice is also soooo relaxing ☺️ Seahorses are just so majestical and you created as always stunning pieces ❤
Thank you so much 😁🥰
Loved the sea horses Daniel really pretty looking forward to.your next genius idea 💡 thank you as always ❤
Daniel this video just triggered something for me! Okay if you remember a while back Claire did a video on clear stickers being visible in resin and you had suggested to me to try to take off the backing first and I tried that and it was still visible but what if we dusted the back of the stickers?!? Oh and try foil adhesive then dusting the backs! It works like a dream on cured resin! Beautiful results! ❤
Yes! I would try any tackifier (stays tacky) that’s used in the tumbler communities. Some, use 2 coats, let dry in between.
Yes, this could work but....be cautious the heat from curing doesn't curl up the stickers.
@@daniel..cooper absolutely! I'm excited to try it and see if it works! That'd be a great video. Hint hint 😂
@@melhaury I usually use one thick coat of the artistic painting studio brand and it works great! But alcohol is easier because you don't have to wait for it to dry before adding the pigment to the piece but I do think you would get a better coating all over with the foil adhesive.
Daniel, this mold works with liquid silicone for inlay making! Amazing detail! We thank you for your genius and hard work!!
Thank you very much! I must try 😁😁🥰
❤❤❤ Yay! I have this mould, I have UV resin, and I have the beast! I know what Im doing tonight 🤗 Thanks again Daniel for the inspiration!
@UnityByNature
Yes, but... *do you have the flakes?!?* 😅
@@fairyspunfibers9098 yes yes yes i do woohoo!
I have several Seahorse moulds, including this one. I love the effects on the Seahorses, they are beautiful. I also use Isoprol with mica's & turn it into paint, to paint my moulds, it gives beautiful effects too. 😊❤
I have this mould. I use it with air dry and polymer clay for decorating. Must try the resin! Nice idea.
I use gilding paste Daniel. A thin coat and the flakes go on beautifully. It does remain a bit tacky, however, if you're backing it, that shouldn't be an issue. Thanks, V
I literally did this while watching your video and the alcohol works great thank you! And a big thank you to whoever the idea came from too. Thanks for sharing this with us it’s helped me already 😊
🤩🤩🤩🤩
Thank you for sharing this great tip! Also, I just love seahorses, so that made it even better. 😊
Thanks as always Bob 😁🥰🫂
Beautiful mold! Great experiment. I love the alcohol hack! Thanks!❤
Thanks Jo 😁 😊
Those seahorses are just gorgeous! 😍 I love those tiny ones...adorable! 💕 Really liking the "highlights" the clear UV gives objects. Thanks, Dan! 😊👍
Dan, it might also work to just make a paste with the flakes/powders and alcohol? I've seen loads of creators do that.
Thank you 😁 I will definitely try it soon 🥰🫂
The effect on the patchy seahorse (the silicone sprayed one) looked like it had been ‘hairsprayed’… until you backed it that is!! 🤣 🤣
Love from Nat. (Brisbane, Australia) ♥️♥️🇦🇺
Thanks Nat 😁 😊 🫂
These are amazing daniel sir ! Thank you !❤❤❤❤❤
My pleasure! Thank you 😁
I really like the highlights you got. They are beautiful. ❤❤
Thank you 😁 😊
Great video and awesome tip with the alcohol.. Thank you Daniel..❤
Thank you 😊 🙏 🫂
Great tip about the bubbles. I saw this mould and wondered about it.
I’ve used gilding glue or just plain nail glue… works really well too… never thought about using alcohol for this,,, very interesting idea.
I like these seahorses esp the tiny ones for earrings
Thank you 😁 😊 🙏
So um, with those fondant molds, I mean there's no set rules per say, but they have doubles for a reason, so you can put the two halves together to make a whole sea horse if you want. Or leave it flat to put it more flat on a cake. But yeah personally I use the Falken to paint the actual mold before I epoxy and the textures and different colors are just phenomenal doing it like that bc the epoxy picks up the flakes leaving less to pick up. But love your vids. I always learn something new. Thanks for posting!
You are an absolute genius and inspiration to resin artists everywhere!
I do this on my uv gel nails. However I flash cure, add the powder then full cure. The flash cure would partially set the back of the seahorse making it sticky. ❤️🇦🇺 they look lovely 😊
🤩🤩🤩
Damn, another hobby I have to try now. Thanks dude! I appreciate the tips and I love your style.
I work with UV resin, and I recommend trying alcohol wipes / pads, I get them at costco here in the US - they’re heavily saturated, (like for cleaning an area of skin before getting an injection / immunization) so might work better than the paper towel method! Thank you for your videos and ideas! Cheers! Happy crafting!
Great idea 💡
Amazing as always, Daniel. Thanks for sharing. It will be something i definitely use in the future. ❤
Thank you 😁 😊
Thank you for the video
Hair spray will also work. Very light spay
Thank you!
I have been using these moulds for ages.
🤩🤩🤩
I would do small sections at a time with the alcohol, it evaporates so fast, but it works great
I absolutely love that mold! Thanks for sharing these tips and tricks as well as the original creators.
Do you have a video on how to make your own white pigment paste?
Love your channel 🥰
Your videos are so much fun. Listen Mr. Party pooper, Mr tell the end of the movie dude, lol let's do this thingy😂 omg those babies are sooo sweet. Hair spray is sticky maybe try that😮
Thank you 😁 😊
These are amazing Daniel! ❤❤❤ I love watching you and all of your experiments. You could put just one side with color and resin the two sides together to make whole seahorse. I have this particular mold in my cart and now know what I am going to do with them. Thank you for sharing all of your work!
Definitely, I had plans to do this after I accidentally deleted the first video but I was in such a rush to get it filmed, I forgot 🙈😂
@@daniel..cooper that is completely understandable!😂
Also, for applying the alcohol, use a fine pump spray bottle to get an even coverage 😊
Definitely will try next time 🤩
I had an issue the other day. So I tried dipping my brush in a bit of UV resin, then dip it in the flakes and it went on lovely…the finish looked very nice! It was very intense and not thin & patchy like with the alcohol.
Great idea! 🤩
Awesome! I prefer the alcohol method. But they are beautiful. Thank you!
100% agree, definitely more coverage 🥰 Thank you 😁 😊
I have also had this problem of adhesion of chameleon flakes & I found hair lacquer worked fine !
I’ve seen people use alcohol with mica to help paint it on- I never considered trying it with the chameleon flakes! Nice!!
Wonderful work as always. As for backing things another thing I’ve seen in the past is someone mixed some mica powders in to a few drops of alcohol and just used that as a paint. I’ve tried it and it did work with epoxy resin as well as helps when painting a mold when the powder doesn’t want to stick or just not building up enough on the surface.
Awesome, will definitely try 🤩
I had planned to buy that fondant mould but didn't because I imagined that those tiny bits would be an issue, but clearly not, so I'll order that... and probably other fondant moulds that I had my doubts about, too.
🤩🤩🤩
Hi Daniel for coating non level items I use a bowl of uncooked rice to place them on this helps level them and any over pour just goes down into the rice,
Great idea! I normally use tack but have run out 🙈
The way the chameleon flakes flew everywhere reminded me of magnets repelling each other.
I wondered if you put the kettle on, would the humidity help keep the flakes under control?
I was in such a rush 😂🤣 I haven't got a kettle in my studio 🙈
Hi Daniel 🤗 try using Elmer's tac'n stik ( or something similar) to hold your piece in place and leveled while backing them, works for me 🙌
I recommend getting a fine mist spray bottle for your 99.9% isopropyl alcohol. The reason the alcohol doesn’t work for epoxy is that it breaks down epoxy. Instead of making it tacky, it slowly dissolves it.
What an awesoem effect they look great . Thanks to the one that had that *light bulb* light up and use alcohol. This wil have so many uses i am sure. I to only work with UV resin so thsi will be great
Thanks so much Selene 😊 🙏
So… I knew about the isopropyl alcohol trick and I figured it out by accident! I used it on UV resin as well as epoxy on both small projects and large projects.
You should try to use a stencil either the isopropyl as well as free hand patterns or embellishments. You basically create a liquid mixture with the isopropyl and a mica powder. Paint on your design and let it dry before adding a top coat very carefully because after it dries the mica powder can shift when pulling your top coat to the edges if you touch it with your tool.
Cheers Daniel just brought the mould as I think it was be good for a lamp project I am looking to do, but will also use it for something else, brilliant detail on it for only a 5er .👍🏼
Thanks Tim 😁 😊
@@daniel..cooper just tried the hairspray technique on a coaster, see how that turns out 😂 only been doing epoxy resin craft for a month, I did the shampoo one with UV resin and colour it first it worked well, then put all the different things I made from it into a skull so it looked like a puzzled brain 😂
@@timwatkins3271 awesome! 🤩🤩🤩💡
These are really amazing!❤❤❤❤
Thanks so much 😊 🙏
🎉These are absolutely awesome 👌 😊
Just use black, white, purple or whatever color gel polish on the backs and a no wipe gel coat. Nail tech trick. You can also give it a wipe with acetone that will make it sticky, just a gentle wipe. Also probably depends on what UV you use.
Will definitely be trying acetone next 😁😁
I have this mold and you can glue them together to make a complete seahorse. I might have to try it with the chameleon flakes sandwiched between the two halves.
Definitely, I had plans to do this after I accidentally deleted the first video but I was in such a rush to get it filmed, I forgot 🙈😂
They look fabulous. You can use Blue tack to hold them and keep them level while you work.
Just an idea. You did great as always ❤
Thanks, yes, I usually do but ran out 🙈
These are really pretty
Thanks Joyce 😁 😊 🫂
They're adorable ❤
Love the colors!!!..keep up the great work Daniel!!!!
Thank you 😊 Will try 😁
Great Video Daniel 👍 I have this mold and have used it a number of times but not this way so i will try it.
Those little ones you made could be put in another jewellery mold with a nice background so that they don't catch on things.
Love this technique 🤩
Thank you 😁 Great idea 💡 🤩
I am surprised that you got away with the silicone spray. I cannot rationalize why a silicone release would help with the retention of those flakes, but I could definitely see where it would cause layering issues. My guess is that It wasn't the silicone doing the work. It was most likely the propellant in the spray that softened your resin. With that said, you might find some non-silicone sprays which contain similar propellants.
The isopropyl alcohol is nice because it's relatively safe. As you point out though, it looks like it did get a little bit hazy. There might be some ways around that. The haziness may actually be coming from water associated with the hydrophilic isopropyl alcohol. If water gets into the plastic and cures there, it will definitely cause a haze. Therefore, it may be a good idea to use 100% isopropyl alcohol, and do it in a low humidity environment. As the isopropyl alcohol evaporates, it gets cold and that attracts more water.
Alternatively, although it is less safe, dichloromethane might be a better choice. DCM is more hydrophobic, and although it does still get cold as it evaporates, you may attract less moisture. I would still heat up the piece, so that as it evaporates, It doesn't get so cold. That might actually help with the IPA too.
One reason I lean towards DCM is that I know they use it for bonding acrylics together and you still get a very clear, non-hazy bonds line. It stands to reason it might work on this as well.
I am a chemist, but I don't have specific experience trying the things that I am recommending. These are all just hypotheses that came to me as I watched your video. I hope you try them, and let me know if they work!
Try spritzing the mold with isopropyl before you put resin in to help rid bubbles. Seen some others use this trick n it seems to work x
