    Jody Watley is one of the best R&B females of all time. She used to sing with Shalamar, then went to the UK and 3 years later came back to the U.S. and hot it big as a solo artist. Wonderful music.

    LOL LOL LOL
    Saying Jody can't dance is like saying Africa has no heat - she was one of the most popular dancers on Soul Train back in the 70s and one of the best dancers still around now - her freestyle moves are second to none.

    jody had the same iconic style as madonna at the time. the belts, the hats, the hoops, the dresses, bustier(sp),the boots, the leather, the makeup. the list goes on and on. i know that she probably had a stylist but a lot of the credit goes to her. her style truly defined the 80's. love the video.

    Jody has 13 #1 Billboard hits and just received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Billboard...charted on Dance, R&B/Soul, Pop and some international charts as well. Her last # 1 hit was in 2007 and was called "I Want Your Love". NYC is filled with people who do have more of an international flair but Madonna copied Black artists and even George Michael did a duet with her because Jody was positioned to capture the Black audience and then a wider pop audience.

    The light skinned guy on drums with the sun glasses is Andre Cymone. He is not Prince's half brother but was a close friend that Prince lived with for awhile. He was the bassist in Prince's first prominent band and can be seen on American Bandstand and Soul Train with Prince. Andre and Jody did marry and have at least one child together

    omg I remeber she sung this on MTV awards (i think). While the intro played she had dancers dressed like her and each one would get spotlighted but it wasn't her. Then she just came strolling from backstage singing in that white pants suit. Then on the second verse she just slid her wig off and had a hot short cut! I NEARLY DIED!!!It was A MAZING performance!!!

    Jody Watley was a professional dancer on Soul Train back in the mid 70s on a then very popular tv show called Soul Train...she was around 16 at the time and joined Shalamar several years later. Her free style moves during her solo career were not like Madonna (but an ode to her Soul Train years) and the fashion shows she went to during her modeling days in the UK was where she picked up some of her fashions.

    Jody worked with David Fincher first in 1988 with her "Most of All" video and later in 89 with "Real Love"- Madonna followed. Also, Jody worked with Prince's band members who heavily influenced her sound during his Purple Rain era- his sound was more prevalent with Jody and visually she seemed to have a Diana Ross and Grace Jones influence.

    Was she promoting her remix album ("You Wanna Dance With Me?" album) at this time because this video takes the song from that one.
    That's interesting the remix version was a single because most radio stations play the original album version today.

  • @sprintbass
    @sprintbass 15 лет назад

    this decade and most of the 90s sounded like crap to me...in the 80s..there was seduction..dance music was all over the radio....and it was just prince and MJ..there was shalamar...Sade...tons of wonderful stuff..it was seductive and over the top...people used to go out dancing back then..those days are sadly gone..i picked up the bass in 84 and im 36 and im playing still..and im proud that my pedigree run to the 80s..if people say its old music i dont care..beats the crap out of top 40 now

  • @OldSkoolRnB
    @OldSkoolRnB 15 лет назад

    Pretty sure that this version was released in early 1988 and You Wanna Dance With Me? didn't come out until 89.
    I'm guessing that most radio stations didn't keep the 7" vinyl or cassettes that singles got distributed on back then which might be why you hear to album version on radio today.

    @Merrida I know. It is mind blowing. Uncle Andre had some great ideas, it just never really clicked. But once he hooked up with auntie Jody, it was magic. Go figure.

  • @toriano33
    @toriano33 15 лет назад

    Good question... But I think Janet was a solo artist (Dream Street... Damn u remember that.lol) when Jody was still with Shalamar. Remember Jody was still with Shalamar in 82' when "A Night to Remember" was released I think she left about 2 years later. So Jody was out first but Janet was solo first. and for I just read she had another album before Dream Street called Janet Jackson.... Damn Janet.....lol

  • @stanleyballard
    @stanleyballard 16 лет назад

    Jody was moreso inspired by Diana Ross (glamour queen) and Grace Jones (avante garde) than any other female artist- check her out and she can see the influences and both of these Black artists are underrated for what they brought to the scene...including Jody herself.

    Really a classy-looking, slick video. Cute how Jody hops up and down;) Couldn't help but notice the Madonna influence: all the black clothing & also the leggings, skirt and bow in her hair. Madonna's "Lucky Star" video also shares that black clothing/white background look. Jody's video is classier, her look is cleaner, and the video is more stylish & professional looking; Madonna's video is more simple, girlier, has a better hook at the beginning & emphasizes more ballet moves.

    Wow. A fan of both. It doesn't seem that way (unemployed hack). I don't care either way, but truth be told, Jody Watley was on the scene long before Madonna (Soul Train, Shalamar) and has a style all her own. Actually alot of women dressed like this in New York at the time. By the way, Borderline is a cover or remake not a copy.

    clevawoman you hit right on the head. Jody Watley was with Shalamar way back in the day and actually got her start on soul train. Her music takes me back to the late 80's when there was good music not like that stuff now. No offense to all but there is no more R&B like there was then. And as for the "Black Madonna" image she was Jody not Madonna and always will be.

    Way better than "Looking for a New Love".
    R&B is awful nowadays. Even in the 90's it was declining, and by 2000 was probably completely dead.
    Hate to sound like an old fogey, but it's true they don't make 'em like this anymore.
    Good times!

    There's no comparison to Madonna's awesome ability to market herself -that is what she is the Queen of ...marketing. But as far as orinality and singing- that's where Jody beats her and many others.

  • @gwenpookie
    @gwenpookie 16 лет назад

    Ok, I may be wrong but, his name is Andre Simone. Right? or Wrong? I no the bass player is one of the Debarge brothers. And didn't Jody Watley use to sing with Shalmar?

  • @stanleyballard
    @stanleyballard 16 лет назад

    Jody influenced Madonna with her vogue moves and wacking from her "Still A Thrill" video and even moreso during her Soul Train days. Also, can remember 1989's "Real Love" being copied by many including Madonna who came out with a similar look in her video not even a year later and she had some of the same fashions check her "Express Yourself" and see the similarities.

    This version is very similar to the 12" Single. Captured of a dj Promotional Video tape. Ha-Ha ... I just dated myself! I love that Borderline cover too! Check out Jody's myspace page, she released a new version of Everything 2007! Nice
